The use of molecular tools, principally qPCR, versus traditional culture-based methods for quantifying microbial parameters (e.g., Fecal Indicator Organisms) in bathing waters generates considerable ongoing debate at the science–policy interface. Advances in science have allowed the development and application of molecular biological methods for rapid (~2 h) quantification of microbial pollution in bathing and recreational waters. In contrast, culture-based methods can take between 18 and 96 h for sample processing. Thus, molecular tools offer an opportunity to provide a more meaningful statement of microbial risk to water-users by providing near-real-time information enabling potentially more informed decision-making with regard to water-based activities. However, complementary studies concerning the potential costs and benefits of adopting rapid methods as a regulatory tool are in short supply. We report on findings from an international Working Group that examined the breadth of social impacts, challenges, and research opportunities associated with the application of molecular tools to bathing water regulations.  相似文献

Radon (Rn(222)) levels in an indoor atmosphere of a multi-storey building at Mumbai have been measured for one year covering all the four seasons. Monitoring was carried out using the time-integrated passive detector technique, using Kodak-115 type Solid State Nuclear Track Detector (SSNTD) films of 2.5x2.5 cm size. Measured indoor radon levels showed a decreasing trend with height with concentration ranging from 41 Bq m(-3) at ground floor level to 15 Bq m(-3) at 19th floor level. Using the dose conversion factors, the inhalation dose due to breathing of radon gas is estimated to be 1.03 mSv y(-1) at the ground floor to 0.38 mSv y(-1) at the 19th floor level. Measured indoor radon concentrations on each floor were compared with the computed values using a mathematical model. The agreement between measured values and calculated values of indoor concentrations at different floors was very good within the limitations of various field parameter values.  相似文献

The crystal structure of PCB 77 (3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, C(12)H(6)Cl(4)), a dioxin-like PCB congener, is described. The dihedral angle of PCB 77 is 43.94(6) degrees, which is slightly larger than calculated or experimental dihedral angles of biphenyl derivatives in solution but smaller than experimental dihedral angles in the gas phase.  相似文献

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at a significantly higher frequency than the typical population. The differentiation of ASD symptoms from those of severe intellectual disability presents diagnostic challenges, which have led to more refined methods in the clinical evaluation of ASD in DS. These improved phenotypic characterization methods not only provide better diagnosis of ASD in DS, but may also be useful in elucidating the etiology of the increased prevalence of ASD in DS. Because all individuals with the classic presentation of DS have trisomy 21, it is possible that those with co-occurring DS and ASD may have additional genetic variants which can act as modifiers of the phenotype, leading to the development of ASD. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The thiazole ring system is one of the most important heterocycles in nature, as it represents an important structural motif of many biological compounds, including vitamin B1 (Thiamin), carboxylase and penicillin. There is, therefore, an urgent need to design rapid, efficient and environmentally benign protocols for the synthesis of thiazoles. Herein, we have developed a one-pot protocol for the synthesis of 4-aryl-2-aminothiazoles from the reaction of aromatic ketones, NBS (N-Bromosuccinimide) and thioureas under microwave irradiation at 80–85 °C in PEG (polyethylene glycol)-400 and water as a green reaction medium. The products were obtained in 84–89% yields in 28–32 min. The method has several advantages such as use of green solvent, easy work-up, excellent yield and avoiding use of lachrymatric α-haloketones.  相似文献

Phytoplankton species diversity was generally high throughout the year at two stations in the central Red Sea (Lat. 21°30N), and species of Mediterranean and Indian Ocean origin were represented, reflecting seasonal monsoonal influence. Low phytoplankton cell numbers accompanying high production rates suggest the significance of nanoplankton or picoplankton which were not enumerated. Production was high year-round, and averaged 390 gC m-2 yr-1, despite the virtual lack of nutrient additions from rainfall or land runoff or demonstrable upwelling. Highest nutrient levels followed the first seasonal peak of production. Biomass and production were seasonally bi- or tri-modal, with major peaks in December–February and June–August, 1977–1978. The first peak of production, populated by diatoms, occurred at the onset of seasonal stratification, but the second peak, populated by Trichodesmium spp., occurred at the height of seasonal stratification and lowest nutrient concentrations. There is no clear relationship between the timing of monsoon activity and the annual production cycle.  相似文献
