Petrochemical industries normally use storage tanks containing large amounts of flammable and hazardous substances. Therefore, the occurrence of a tank fire, such as the large industrial accident on 11th December 2005 at Buncefield Oil Storage Depots, is possible and usually leads to fire and explosions. Experience has shown that the continuous production of black smoke from these fires due to the toxic gases from the combustion process, presents a potential environmental and health problem that is difficult to assess. The goals of the present effort are to estimate the height of the smoke plume, the ground-level concentrations of the toxic pollutants (smoke, SO2, CO, PAHs, VOCs) and to characterize risk zones by comparing the ground-level concentrations with existing safety limits. For the application of the numerical procedure developed, an external floating-roof tank has been selected with dimensions of 85 m diameter and 20 m height. Results are presented and discussed. It is concluded that for all scenarios considered, the ground-level concentrations of smoke, SO2, CO, PAHs and VOCs do not exceed the safety limit of IDLH and there are no “death zones” due to the pollutant concentrations. 相似文献

Biological elements, such as benthic macroinvertebrates and fish, have been used in assessing the ecological quality of rivers
according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive. However, the concurrent use of multiple organism groups provides
a broader perspective for such evaluations, since each biological element may respond differently to certain environmental
variables. In the present study, we assessed the ecological quality of a Greek river (RM4 type), during autumn 2003 and spring
2004 at 10 sites, with benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Hydromorphological and physicochemical parameters, habitat structure,
and riparian vegetation were also considered. Pollution sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa were more abundant at headwaters,
which had good/excellent water quality according to the Hellenic Evaluation System (HES). The main river reaches possessed
moderate water quality, while downstream sites were mainly characterised as having bad or poor water quality, dominated by
pollution-tolerant macroinvertebrate taxa. Macroinvertebrates related strongly to local stressors as chemical degradation
(ordination analysis CCA) and riparian quality impairment (bivariate analysis) while fish did not. Fish were absent from the
severely impacted lower river reaches. Furthermore, external pathological signs were observed in fish caught at certain sites.
A combined use of both macroinvertebrates and fish in biomonitoring programs is proposed for providing a safer assessment
of local and regional habitat impairment. 相似文献

Disposal of untreated olive mill waste waters (OMW) is a serious environmental problem in many Mediterranean countries. The aim of this work was to assess whether changes in soil properties have occurred due to direct disposal of raw OMW on soil and in evaporation ponds, and to investigate the potential fate and transport of pollutants after olive oil production had ceased. The results clearly showed that uncontrolled OMW disposal is a significant source of pollution to surface soil and waters. Disposal of OMW on soil greatly increased electrical conductivity (EC), available phosphorous (P), exchangeable potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg), organic matter, polyphenols, total and inorganic nitrogen (N), and available micronutrients mainly in surface soil layers. The presence of a high content of clay and carbonates in soil act as barriers and prevent downward transport of pollutants. Residual levels of total carbon (C), polyphenols, total and inorganic N, exchangeable K+, available P, iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) were also elevated even 8 years after mill closure. The long term disposal of OMW highlights the need to establish soil quality standards for soil parameters in order to identify soils affected by the disposal of OMW. 相似文献
