Antifeedant activity of aqueous extract of Gnidia glauca Gilg. and Toddalia asiatica Lam. on the gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hbn)

Aqueous leaf extracts of two plants namely Gnidia glauca Gilg. and Toddalia asiatica Lam., have been screened for their antifeedant activity against the sixth instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hbn) by applying the aqueous leaf extracts at various concentrations viz., 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 percent on young tomato leaves. The larval mortality of more than 50 percent at higher concentrations (0.8 and 1.0 percent) was observed in the aqueous extracts. Among the two aqueous leaf extracts tested, T. asiatica was found to show higher rate of mortality (86.1%) at 1.0 percent concentration. A reduction in the rate of food consumption and growth was observed in the larvae of H. armigera after 48 hours of treatments in both the aqueous extracts. Since this insect pest species have developed resistance and resurgence to synthetic insecticides, the only alternate is the usage of bio-pesticides for they are eco-friendly, pollution free and easily degradable.

Determination of ozone in outdoor and indoor environments using nitrite-impregnated passive samplers followed by ion chromatography

An improved ion chromatographic (IC) method has been developed for the separation of nitrate in filter extracts in the presence of high concentrations of nitrite. This analytical method was successfully used for an indirect measurement of ozone (O3) in outdoor and indoor air, following its collection using a nitrite-impregnated passive sampler. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification, using the modified IC method, were 6 microg l(-1) (3sigma) and 20 microg l(-1) (10sigma), respectively. Improved detection limits and low baseline noise were obtained with the use of eluent generator and high-capacity ion exchange column. The optimized method was used for assessing O3 concentration in both indoor and outdoor environments of 28 child care centers (CCCs) located in different parts of Singapore. The O3 concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 11.95 parts per billion (ppb) in indoor and from 3.2 to 21.7 ppb in outdoor environments during the study period. It was found that, among the CCCs investigated in this study, air-conditioned CCCs and those located in close proximity to traffic emissions had significantly lower O3 concentrations indoors.     

Synthesis and evaluation of antioxidant activities of some indole-2,3-dione derivatives and analogs

In the present study, a series of novel Schiff bases of isatin were synthesized by condensation of imesatin with different aromatic aldehydes. The imesatins were synthesized by reaction of isatin with p-phenylenediamine. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by means of IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. These compounds were screened for antioxidant activity by DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity. In all the methods, the compound 3-(4-(3,4,5-trimethoxy benzylideneamino)phenylimino) indoline-2-one (5d) showed highest antioxidant activity because of the presence of electron donating groups and the compound 3-(4-(4-nitrobenzylideneamino)phenylimino) indoline-2-one (5f) showed the least activity because of the presence of an electron withdrawing group.
