Antifouling biocides are used to prevent the settlement and growth of organisms on submerged surfaces. Irgarol 1051 is currently among the most widely used organic booster biocides worldwide. This study reports Irgarol 1051, its major metabolite M1 (aka GS26575), and diuron concentrations found in selected California marinas. Seasonal water samples (n = 46) were collected during the summer and fall of 2006 from eleven marinas throughout Southern and Northern California. The samples were extracted using solid phase extraction and analysed utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) with electrospray ionization. All three compounds were detected in all samples, representing a 100% frequency of occurrence and indicating widespread use around the sampled marinas. Irgarol concentrations ranged from 12 to 712 ng L(-1) (average 102 ng L(-1)), M1 concentrations were 1-217 ng L(-1) (average 31 ng L(-1)), and diuron concentrations were 5-27 ng L(-1) (average 13 ng L(-1)). In general, concentrations of both Irgarol (15-712 ng L(-1)) and M1 (1-217 ng L(-1)) were greater in samples collected during the summer, corresponding to the peak of the boating season. The detected diuron concentrations in most cases were greater for fall samples (7-27 ng L(-1)), and probably represented a combination of non-agricultural (rights of way) and agricultural applications of diuron in California. The maximum Irgarol concentration detected in California marinas in summer 2006 (712 ng L(-1)) was five times greater than the Irgarol concentration suggested as the plant toxicity benchmark (136 ng L(-1)). Twenty three percent of samples from California marinas in this study exceeded this benchmark, suggesting that detected Irgarol concentrations may be high enough to cause changes in phytoplankton communities in the sampled marinas. 相似文献

Introduction
Comprehensive interventions that address public-health concerns invariably include behavior-change strategies. In occupational safety and health, behavioral safety is an approach designed to improve safety performance directly through peer observations of safe behaviors, goal setting, performance feedback, and celebrations or incentives for reaching safety goals. Although the basic components of behavioral safety processes have been studied and widely documented, the current safety literature reveals several gaps in knowledge. These gaps are associated mostly with wide practice variations among the common process elements and uncertainty about the influence of organizational and other external factors.Impact to Industry
A major objective of this paper was to highlight not only key topic areas that warrant further research, but also to propose a list of research questions that are tied to uncertainties about various intervention practices. If only a portion of these topic areas and research questions are addressed through systematic reviews, field interventions, surveys, and laboratory-based studies, then the knowledge gained will significantly improve the delivery and effectiveness of behavioral safety interventions and thus their impact on worker health and safety. 相似文献3.

Wirth is US Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs and he is responsible within the US State Department for overseeing environment, population, human rights, refugee, narcotics and related programmes. He was elected to the US Senate from Colorado in 1986 and served until 1993 when he chose not to run for re-election. He was, previously, a Congressman for 12 years and was voted one of the 25 most effective Members of Congress. In 1992, he served as national co-chair of the Clinton – Gore presidential campaign. Aroclor 1268 is a highly chlorinated PCB mixture that was released into the aquatic environment near Brunswick, GA (BR), as a result of decades of local industrial activity. This extensive contamination has led to US EPA Superfund designation in estuarine areas in and around Purvis Creek, GA. Roughly 50 km to the northeast is the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SI) where previous studies have documented unexpectedly high Aroclor 1268-like PCB levels in blubber and plasma samples of resident bottlenose dolphins. This result led to a collaborative effort to assess the PCB patterns and concentrations in SI sediment and fish (as potential vectors for PCB transfer to SI resident dolphins). Thirty SI randomly assigned stations were sampled for sediment PCB levels. Additionally, fish were collected and analyzed from SI (n?=?31) and BR (n?=?33). Results were pooled with regional assessments of PCB concentrations from South Carolina and North Carolina in an effort to determine the association of Aroclor 1268 levels in SI samples. Results indicated that PCB levels in sediment and fish are much lower in the SI estuary compared to BR sediment and fish concentrations. However, PCB congener profiles for both sediments and fish were similar between the two locations and consistent with the Aroclor 1268 signature, indicating possible transport from the Brunswick area. A likely source of Aroclor 1268 in dolphins from SI is contaminated fish prey. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Epilithic lichen (Xanthoria elegans in Canada, Lecanora muralis in Germany) were gathered from 17 locations in Ontario, Canada (from Lake Ontario to James Bay) and 43 locations in Germany (from the Alps to the North Sea and from the Baltic Sea to the Erzgebirge). Sample aliquots were digested in nitric acid and trace elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrom-etry techniques. The organohalogens were determined as absorbable organic halogens (AOXs) by coulometry. Concentration ranges from Germany for trace element samples and AOXs were determined. The lichen showed high spatial resolution in their element enrichment patterns. This allowed for differentiation between natural and anthropogenic dominance in ambient air concentrations. This biomonitoring method has proven to be very sensitive, fast, and reliable. No clear relationship could be found between trace element and AOX concentrations. The AOX values may reflect individual metabolic rates of the fungal partner in lichen symbionts. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Geologic, engineering, and biological investigations of six Pennsylvania coldwater streams were undertaken to determine the impact of channel modifications instituted both prior to and following Hurricane Agnes. The primary focus of the study was on the ecological changes brought about by stream channelization. No long-term deleterious effects on water quality, attached algae, benthic fauna, or forage fish populations were found. Trout, however, were found to be greater in numbers and weight in natural than in channelized stream reaches. Lack of suitable physical habitat appears to be the primary cause of reduced trout populations in stream reaches which have been channelized. 相似文献
