In caudal autotomy, lizards shed their tail to escape from an attacking predator. Since the tail serves multiple functions, caudal regeneration is of pivotal importance. However, it is a demanding procedure that requires substantial energy and nutrients. Therefore, lizards have to increase energy income to fuel the extraordinary requirements of the regenerating tail. We presumed that autotomized lizards would adjust their digestion to acquire this additional energy. To clarify the effects of tail regeneration on digestion, we compared the digestive performance before autotomy, during regeneration, and after its completion. Tail regeneration indeed increased gut passage time but did not affect digestive performance in a uniform pattern: though protein income was maximized, lipid and sugar acquisition remained stable. This divergence in proteins may be attributed to their particular role in tail reconstruction, as they are the main building blocks for tissue formation. 相似文献

Caudal autotomy is an effective antipredator strategy widespread among lizards. The shed tail thrashes vigorously for long periods to distract the predator and facilitate the lizard's escape. This movement is maintained by energy supplied by the anaerobic conversion of glycogen into lactate. It has been suggested that lactate accumulation serves as an index for the vigor of tail thrashing. We made three predictions: (1) tail loss frequency should be higher under heavier predation regime, (2) the duration of postautotomy tail movement should be extended in populations under heavy predation pressure as an adaptation to the higher risk and the increased need for defense, and (3) as result, lactate in these tail tissues should be concentrated at higher levels. To eliminate the impact of phylogeny and environmental factors on the interpretation of our result, we focused exclusively on one species, the Balearic lizard (Podarcis lilfordi). We studied three populations under different predation pressure but sharing the same climatic conditions. We found no differences among the studied populations either in postautotomy duration of tail movement or in levels of final lactate accumulation while autotomy frequency was higher where predation pressure was more intense. Tail loss effectiveness is directly influenced by the level of predation, while secondary features of the trait appear to remain independent from the impact of environment. 相似文献

The aim of this paper was to study the variations of radon and daughter nuclei during treatment in the thermal spas of Lesvos Island (Greece). For this purpose, in the thermal spas of Lesvos we have measured the radon concentrations of thermal waters, as well as indoor radon, daughter and coarse particle (>500 nm) concentrations. Various instruments and procedures were employed for measurements. Radon concentrations of thermal waters were found to lie in the range 10 Bq l(-1) and 304 Bq l(-1). Concentration peaks both for radon, radon daughter and coarse particle, were found to appear during filling of baths in the treatment process. The doses delivered to the bathers during treatment were in the range of 0.00670-0.1279 mSv per year, while the doses delivered to personnel were below 20 mSv per year. 相似文献

To assess the relative toxicity of the herbicides acetochlor and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) on the nervous system, the sciatic nerve of the frog (Rana ridibunda) nerve was incubated in saline inside a specially designed recording chamber. This chamber permits monitoring of the evoked compound action potential (CAP) of the nerve, a parameter that could be used to quantify the vitality of the nerve in normal conditions as well as when the nerve was exposed to the compounds under investigation. Thus, when the nerve was exposed to acetochlor, the EC(50) was estimated to be 0.22mM, while for 2,4,5-T the EC(50) was 0.90mM. Using the identical nerve preparation, the EC(50) of 2,4-D was estimated to be 3.80mM [Kouri, G., Theophilidis, G., 2002. The action of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid on the isolated sciatic nerve of the frog (Rana ridibunda). Neurotoxicol. Res. 4, 25-32]. The ratio of the relative toxicity for acetochlor, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D was found to be 1:4:17.2. However, because it is well-known that the action of 2,4-D is dependent on the pH, the relative toxicity of the three compounds was tested at pH 3.3, since it has been found that the sciatic nerve of the frog is tolerant of such a low pH. Under these conditions, the EC(50) was 0.77mM (from 0.22mM at pH 7.2) for acetochlor, 0.20mM (from 0.90mM) for 2,4,5-T and 0.24mM (from 3.80mM at pH 7.2) for 2,4-D. Thus, the relative toxicity of the three compounds changed drastically to 1:0.25:0.31. This change in the relative toxicity is due not only to the increase in the toxicity of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D at low pH levels, but also to the decrease in the toxicity of acetochlor at pH 3.3. 相似文献

Potentially toxic metals in the urban chemical environment impose risks to both ecosystem and human health. Here, we evaluate the labile pools and availabilities of non-anthropogenic Ni, Cr, Co and Mn in soil samples from Thiva town (central Greece) and investigate their associations with common soil properties and geochemical data obtained by the aqua regia and single selective dissolutions. Experimental work included the initial application of the sequential extraction protocol proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference and chemical extractions with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid solution and a modified physiologically based extraction test with the aim to obtain the operationally defined fractions of plant availability and human bioaccessibility, respectively. The leachate results demonstrated that despite the significant contribution of residual metal species especially for Ni and Cr, the studied serpentine soils provide chemically labile pools for all the considered elements. Nickel was found to be the most available metal with the order being Ni?>?Cr?~?Co?~?Mn for plant uptake and Ni?>?Cr?>?Co?~?Mn for human bioaccessibility. The aqua regia extractable concentrations are not predictors of elemental availabilities except for Ni bioaccessible data interpreting however only a moderate percentage of the total variance. The incorporation of basic soil properties (mostly total organic carbon), geochemical data for the major elements Ca, Mg and Fe and ammonium oxalate extractable Cr significantly improved the estimations for individual elements entailing the strong influence of the chemistry and mineralogy of soil materials to the release of focus metals from the soil matrix. This study provides for the first time bioaccessible data for serpentine-derived soils that are more realistic for evaluating potential adverse effects on the human health. 相似文献
