This paper presents a summary of globalacid deposition flux data taken from a globalassessment report on acid deposition prepared forUNEP/WMO (Whelpdale and Kaiser, 1996). There is a largevariation in the spacial coverage and reliability ofmonitoring around the world. Many more stationsmeasure wet deposition than collect appropriate datafor estimating dry deposition. The widespread regionswith highest precipitation concentrations anddeposition fluxes of sulphate and nitrate coincideclosely with the regions of highest density ofSO2 and NOx precursor emissions occurringprimarily in the mid-latitude, northern hemispherebelt where a large fraction of the worlds fossilfuels is consumed. Organic acids in precipitation makea minor contribution to acidity (<20%) inindustrial regions, but in the rest of the world theyare of same order, or even exceed, inorganic acids.Less is known about dry deposition, but it appears topredominate near strong emission sources with wetdeposition predominating farther downwind. The molarratio of the N/S contribution to acidic deposition isclose to 1.0 over large areas of Europe and NorthAmerica, but is highly variable elsewhere, beinghighest in equatorial regions due to biomass burningand lowest near smelters and other large sources of SO2.  相似文献

As part of the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Programin 1991, the field efficacy of six research indicators wasexamined in the estuarine systems of the Gulf of Mexico. Theutility of these indicators was tested by examining thoseresponses at both ends of multiple environmental gradients;namely, under minimally impacted conditions (reference) andheavily impacted conditions (by hypoxia, industrialdischarges, agricultural runoff). In addition, the geographiceffects of location (east and west of the Mississippi River)were examined. Numbers and frequencies of pathologies,abundance of splenic macrophage aggregates, and vertebralabnormalities showed response patterns that suggest widerfield testing along full gradients rather than simply theextremes of the gradient are warranted. Selected bloodproteins showed some promise but logistical constraints inestuarine environments may limit its utility. Concentrationsof selected organic compounds in bile showed no differences inthis study between references and contaminated sites.Molecular bioindicators are discussed with regard to theirpotential utility as indicators of ecosystem conditions. Ofthese potential indicators, the use of vitellogenin assays asa measure of reproductive impairment and frequency of shelldisease in selected crustaceans as an indicator ofimmunological aberrations deserve further examination.  相似文献

Hillslope runoff and leaching studies, catchment-scale water quality measurements and P retention and release characteristics of stream bank and catchment soils were used to better understand reasons behind the reported ineffectiveness of riparian buffers for phosphorus (P) management in catchments with sandy soils from south-west Western Australia (WA). Catchment-scale water quality measurements of 60 % particulate P (PP) suggest that riparian buffers should improve water quality; however, runoff and leaching studies show 20 times more water and 2 to 3 orders of magnitude more P are transported through leaching than runoff processes. The ratio of filterable reactive P (FRP) to total P (TP) in surface runoff from the plots was 60 %, and when combined with leachate, 96 to 99 % of P lost from hillslopes was FRP, in contrast with 40 % measured as FRP at the large catchment scale. Measurements of the P retention and release characteristics of catchment soils (<2 mm) compared with stream bank soil (<2 mm) and the <75-μm fraction of stream bank soils suggest that catchment soils contain more P, are more P saturated and are significantly more likely to deliver FRP and TP in excess of water quality targets than stream bank soils. Stream bank soils are much more likely to retain P than contribute P to streams, and the in-stream mixing of FRP from the landscape with particulates from stream banks or stream beds is a potential mechanism to explain the change in P form from hillslopes (96 to 99 % FRP) to large catchments (40 % FRP). When considered in the context of previous work reporting that riparian buffers were ineffective for P management in this environment, these studies reinforce the notion that (1) riparian buffers are unlikely to provide fit-for-purpose P management in catchments with sandy soils, (2) most P delivered to streams in sandy soil catchments is FRP and travels via subsurface and leaching pathways and (3) large catchment-scale water quality measurements are not good indicators of hillslope P mobilisation and transport processes.  相似文献

The coastal waters of American Samoa’s five high islands (Tutuila, Aunu’u, Ofu, Olosega, and Ta’u) were surveyed in 2004 using a probabilistic design. Water quality data were collected from the near-shore coastal habitat, defined as all near-shore coastal waters including embayments, extending out to 1/4 mile off-shore. Hydrography and water column samples were collected, and water quality data were compared to the Territorial water quality standards for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), Enterococcus, chlorophyll a, water clarity, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. All station measurements for pH, DO, and Enterococcus satisfied the local water quality standards, although some fraction of the Territory could not be assessed for either DO or Enterococcus. With respect to chlorophyll a, 66 ± 18% of Territory coastal waters complied with the standard, while 34 ± 18% failed to comply with the standard. For water clarity, 54 ± 18% of the Territorial waters complied with the standard while 42 ± 7% failed to comply. Territorial waters satisfied the standards for total nitrogen and phosphorus 72 ± 17% and 92 ± 10%, respectively. These data provide the first “big-picture” view of water quality in the near shore region around the high islands of American Samoa. While the picture is encouraging, these data suggest emerging water quality concerns.  相似文献

A benthic index for northern Gulf of Mexico estuaries has been developed and successfully validated by the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program for Estuaries (EMAP-E) in the Louisianian Province. The benthic index is a useful and valid indicator of estuarine condition that is intended to provide environmental managers with a simple tool for assessing the ecological condition of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Associations between the benthic index and indicators of hypoxia, sediment contamination, and sediment toxicity were investigated to determine the most probable cause(s) of degraded benthic condition. The results showed that, on a local scale, the associations between the benthic index and potential environmental causes differed among estuaries. In Pensacola Bay, FL, for example, there was a significant association between the levels of toxic chemicals (e.g. DDT, silver, and TBT) in the sediment and the benthic index, especially in the bayous which have known sediment contamination problems. In Mobile Bay, however, degraded benthic communities were more closely associated with eutrophication and hypoxia. Nevertheless, a benthic index is a valuable tool for identifying areas that could be already degraded and tracking the status of environmental condition in large geographical regions.  相似文献

An ongoing biomonitoring program using oysters (Crassostrea virginica) was implemented in 1978 to monitor radionuclide releases from the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant located on Chesapeake Bay. The program involves quarterly removal and replenishment of oysters located in a tray about 0.2 km from the effluent discharge. Radiosilver (Ag-110m) concentrations in tray oysters (pCi/kg ww) were analyzed using ANCOVA-like models with plant releases of Ag-110m in the present and immediately preceding quarters and season of exposure as explanatory variables. Hypothesis testing based on the estimated models and comparison among model predictions under hypothetical release scenarios showed that season of exposure was important in influencing Ag-110m concentrations, with exposure during the Fall and Summer seasons resulting in significantly higher Ag-110m concentrations in tray oysters than exposure during the Winter and Spring seasons. From a management perspective of minimizing Ag-110m concentrations in oysters located near the plant, Winter and Spring are the preferred seasons for plant releases.  相似文献

Rain, hail, and snow samples collected in central Alberta have been analyzed for sulfate and chloride content using a conductometric titration method. The mean values of sulfate concentration in rain and hail collected in the region of sulfur extraction gas plants were 2.7 mg/l and 2.9 mg/l respectively. The mean value of the sulfate content of a large number of hail samples collected from one severe storm well removed from a major SO2 source was only 0.6 mg/l. Several snow samples collected in Alberta and southern British Columbia had a mean sulfate content of less than 0.5 mg/l. These results are discussed in terms of the efficiency with which SO2 is removed from the atmosphere by the different precipitation processes. The results strongly suggest that most of the sulfate found in central Alberta precipitation is of local industrial origin.

By comparing the sulfate deposition in precipitation around one isolated gas plant with the known SO2 emission rate, a local atmospheric sulfur budget is derived. This budget indicates that the summertime convective storms are a very efficient mechanism for removing the SO2 from the atmosphere, with between 32 and 46% of the sulfur emitted as SO2 arriving at the ground as sulfate sulfur within a radius of 25 miles of the source. In contrast snow is a very inefficient removal mechanism, since in winter less than 2% of the sulfur emission is deposited in the snowfall near the source.  相似文献
