Land application of broiler litter is a common disposal method due to its value as a fertiliser substitute, but presents potential environmental problems because of nutrient runoff. Composting has been suggested as an alternative due to the formation of more stable organic components. The land application of fresh and composted broiler litter are compared as alternative disposal methods. The costs of land application of broiler litter are dominated by spreading because of low nutrient densities relative to commercial fertilisers. Composting broiler litter before land application appears to be substantially less economically attractive than land application of fresh broiler litter because of high costs of production and higher spreading costs due to even lower nutrient density. However, when environmental constraints are placed on the phosphorus concentration from hayfield runoff, composting becomes a more attractive alternative. Composting becomes more viable as the land base for application becomes smaller relative to broiler production; as alternative disposal costs for litter become higher; and as environmental constraints become stricter.  相似文献

2-Trifluoromethylphenol was hydrolysed in a phosphate buffer at neutral pH. At mild temperatures ranging from 34 degrees C to 69 degrees C this compound liberates consecutively fluorine anions to form salicylic acid. This process is energetically driven by the hydration of the fluorine anions. No intermediates have been detected by HPLC and (19)F-NMR and this was confirmed by computer calculations which favor the first step in the whole reaction sequence being rate-limiting. Accordingly, the reaction energy of the first dehalogenation of the trifluoromethyl anion is 28.4 kcal mol(-1) higher than for the second dehalogenation. The pseudo-first-order kinetic was determined and from an Arrhenius diagram an activation energy of E(a)=25.1 kcal mol(-1) has been estimated. At 37 degrees C and a pH of 7.4 the half-life was 6.9 h. The rate of hydrolysis was favored at higher pH and it was not influenced by oxygen, sunlight or trace elements found in natural water. The latter was shown by incubations with lake water instead of distilled water.  相似文献

Over-allocation of irrigation water has led to widespread environmental degradation in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) in Australia, prompting discussions of the water efficiency performance of irrigated industries. There is increasing pressure for irrigators to adopt water efficient practices in line with ecologically sustainable principles, especially with current drought conditions. However, there is great uncertainty surrounding the available practices to improve irrigation efficiency from both ecological and economic standpoints. This paper examines the economic and environmental impact of several possible water efficient practices and government policies, using an interdisciplinary approach combining biophysical modelling and economic modelling. This is done for the case-study of the Mooki catchment in the MDB, located in northern New South Wales, Australia.  相似文献

How effective are multi-stakeholder scenarios-building processes to bring diverse actors together and create a policy-making tool to support sustainable development and promote food security in the developing world under climate change? The effectiveness of a participatory scenario development process highlights the importance of “boundary work” that links actors and organizations involved in generating knowledge on the one hand, and practitioners and policymakers who take actions based on that knowledge on the other. This study reports on the application of criteria for effective boundary work to a multi-stakeholder scenarios process in East Africa that brought together a range of regional agriculture and food systems actors. This analysis has enabled us to evaluate the extent to which these scenarios were seen by the different actors as credible, legitimate and salient, and thus more likely to be useful. The analysis has shown gaps and opportunities for improvement on these criteria, such as the quantification of scenarios, attention to translating and communicating the results through various channels and new approaches to enable a more inclusive and diverse group of participants. We conclude that applying boundary work criteria to multi-stakeholder scenarios processes can do much to increase the likelihood of developing sustainable development and food security policies that are more appropriate.  相似文献

Transformation of teflubenzuron, the active component in the insecticide commercialized as Nomolt, by soil microorganisms was studied. It was shown that microorganisms, belonging to Bacillus, Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter genera are capable to perform the hydrolytic cleavage of the phenylurea bridge of teflubenzuron in different positions, especially active was Bacillus brevis 625. The structure of the intermediates formed was established using TLC, HPLC, mass-spectrometry and 19F NMR techniques. It was shown that for a dose range of 53-132 microM and upon 12 days of fermentation about 30% of the teflubenzuron was modified. About 10-15% was transformed into 2,6-difluorobenzamide, 3-5% into 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid, 10-12% into 2,4-difluoro-3,5-dichloro-aniline. The late compound gave rise to formation of a condensed compound, identified as 1,2-bis(2,4-difluoro-3,5-dichlorophenyl)urea with molecular mass of 420. The results obtained indicate degradation of teflubenzuron by soil microorganisms to be a process to be mediated by microbial consortia, and starting with hydrolysis of the phenylurea bridge by several bacterial species. Subsequent further degradation of the aromatic degradation products has to be mediated by other strains known to be capable of degradation of halogenated aromatics.  相似文献

3,4-Dichloro- and 3,4-difluoroanilines were degraded by Pseudomonas fluorescens 26-K under aerobic conditions. In the presence of glucose strain degraded 170 mg/L of 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) during 2-3 days. Increasing of toxicant concentration up to 250 mg/L led to degradation of 3,4-DCA during 4 days and its intermediates during 5-7 days. Without cosubstrate and nitrogen source degradation of 3,4-DCA took place too, but more slowly--about 40% of toxicant at initial concentration 75 mg/L was degraded during 15 days. 3,4-Difluoroaniline (3,4-DFA) (initial concentration 170 mg/L) was degraded by Pseudomonas fluorescens 26-K during 5-7 days. The strain was able to completely degrade up to 90 mg/L of 3,4-DFA, without addition of cosubstrate and nitrogen during 15 days. Degradation of fluorinated aniline was accompanied by intensive defluorination. Activity of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C2,3DO) (0.230 micromol/min/mg of protein) was found in the culture liquid of the strain, grown with 3,4-DCA and glucose. This fact, as well as, the presence of 3-chloro-4-hydroxyaniline as a metabolite suggested that 3,4-DCA degradation pathway includes dehalogenation and hydroxylation of aromatic ring followed by its subsequent cleaving by C2,3DO. On the contrary, activity of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C1,2DO) (0.08 micromol/min/mg of protein) was found in the cell-free extract of biomass grown on 3,4-DFA. 3-Fluoro-4-hydroxyaniline as intermediate was found in this cell-free extract.  相似文献
