This paper provides a bridge between the fields of ecological risk assessment (ERA) and radioecology by presenting key biota dose assessment issues identified in the US Department of Energy's Graded Approach for Evaluating Radiation Doses to Aquatic and Terrestrial Biota in a manner consistent with the US Environmental Protection Agency's framework for ERA. Current radiological ERA methods and data are intended for use in protecting natural populations of biota, rather than individual members of a population. Potentially susceptible receptors include vertebrates and terrestrial plants. One must ensure that all media, radionuclides (including short-lived radioactive decay products), types of radiations (i.e., alpha particles, electrons, and photons), and pathways (i.e., internal and external contamination) are combined in each exposure scenario. The relative biological effectiveness of alpha particles with respect to deterministic effects must also be considered. Expected safe levels of exposure are available for the protection of natural populations of aquatic biota (10 mGy d(-1)) and terrestrial plants (10 mGy d(-1)) and animals (1 mGy d(-1)) and are appropriate for use in all radiological ERA tiers, provided that appropriate exposure assumptions are used. Caution must be exercised (and a thorough justification provided) if more restrictive limits are selected, to ensure that the supporting data are of high quality, reproducible, and clearly relevant to the protection of natural populations.  相似文献

During 1983 and 1984, The Dow Chemical Company conducted a study to determine the extent of dioxin contamination at its Midland, Michigan plant and the surrounding area. The primary objectives of this study were to identify, rank order, and when possible quantify potential sources of dioxins to the environment and also to determine the extent of contamination in areas affected by the Dow facility. Early in the study, it was estimated that approximately 0.6g/year of 2378-TCDD was being emitted in 2.5 × 1010L of wastewater effluent. Data will describe observed sources of TCDD (both current and historical), environmental levels, existing water treatment methods, control measures taken, and future improvements on the water system to reduce TCDD in the effluent.  相似文献

Solvent extraction is used to reduce lead concentrations from millpond wastewater solids, a type of foundry process waste. Toluene and toluene mixed with di-(2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP) have been tried as leaching solvents. Toluene is ineffective as a solvent in extracting lead, but the toluene-HDEHP mixture effectively removes lead from solid foundry waste. The effects of the HDEHP concentration, the contact time, and the amount of solvent used on lead extraction have been investigated. The mass transfer process is rapid: contact time of 1/2 hour has been found to be sufficient to accomplish the leaching process. The concentration of HDEHP significantly impacts lead removal. The optimum concentration of HDEHP is determined to range from 0.05 to 0.1 mol/l. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test of the treated samples gives leachable lead in much lower quantities than those found in the untreated samples. Thus the solvent extraction process appears to be an effective method to significantly reduce the lead content of millpond wastewater solids.  相似文献

The physical uniformity of the deep sea suggests a lack of absolute barriers to faunal dispersal, and thus genetic homogeneity in broadly distributed species is expected. The deep-sea amphipod Eurythenes gryllus Lichtenstein (Crustacea: Lysianassoidea) is considered a panoceanic, cold-water stenotherm, with a vertical depth distribution from 184 to 6500 m. We surveyed mtDNA sequence diversity in E. gryllus to assess genetic diversity and population structure in different oceans and across traditionally defined bathyal and abyssal zones. DNA sequences (437 nucleotides length) from the mitochondrial large-subunit ribosomal RNA gene (16S rRNA) of 95 individuals, collected between 1982 and 1990 from 14 locations in the central North Pacific (including multiple samples on the slope of a seamount), castern and western North Atlantic, and the Arctic Ocean, were obtained. Our analysis of DNA sequence diversity indicates (1) genetic homogeneity among sites within the same depth zone at the scale of ocean basins; and (2) genetically divergent, cryptic taxa distributed at different depths, with the greatest diversity in the bathyal zone. These observations suggest that ecological and physical conditions are important isolating mechanisms that may lead to speciation in this group.  相似文献

A dynamic linear compartment model of the global iodine cycle has been developed for the purpose of estimating radiological impacts on the world population from releases of 129I to the environment. The time-invariant fractional transfer rates, which describe the transport of 129I between environmental compartments comprising the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and terrestrial biosphere, are estimated from an analysis of available data on concentrations for naturally occurring stable iodine and data on the global hydrologic cycle. The global radiological impacts on man from a given release of 129I are estimated from the calculated compartment inventories as a function of time and models for the intake of iodine by a reference adult. For a constrant population of 12.2 billion, the estimated worldwide complete population dose commitment to the thyroid is 76 man-Sv/GBq (2.8 × 105 man-rem/Ci) released. Estimated values of the incomplete population dose commitment at various times after a global-scale release to the atmosphere are also presented.  相似文献

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) currently has in place a radiation dose standard for the protection of aquatic animals, and is considering additional dose standards for terrestrial biota. These standards are: 10 mGy/d for aquatic animals, 10 mGy/d for terrestrial plants, and, 1 mGy/d for terrestrial animals. Guidance on suitable approaches to the implementation of these standards is needed. A screening methodology, developed through DOE's Biota Dose Assessment Committee (BDAC), serves as the principal element of DOE's graded approach for evaluating radiation doses to aquatic and terrestrial biota. Limiting concentrations of radionuclides in water, soil, and sediment were derived for 23 radionuclides. Four organism types (aquatic animals; riparian animals; terrestrial animals; and terrestrial plants) were selected as the basis for development of the screening method. Internal doses for each organism type were calculated as the product of contaminant concentration, bioaccumulation factor(s) and dose conversion factors. External doses were calculated based on the assumption of immersion of the organism in soil, sediment, or water. The assumptions and default parameters used provide for conservative screening values. The screening methodology within DOE's graded approach should prove useful in demonstrating compliance with biota dose limits and for conducting screening assessments of radioecological impact. It provides a needed evaluation tool that can be employed within a framework for protection of the environment.  相似文献

The need to compare potential health risks to the public associated with different activities that can result in releases of hazardous substances to the environment is becoming increasingly important in decision-making. In making such comparisons, it is desirable to use equivalent indicators of potential health risks for radionuclides, chemical carcinogens, and noncarcinogenic hazardous chemicals. Current approaches to risk assessment that were developed for purposes of protecting human health do not provide equivalent indicators of potential risks from exposure to radionuclides and hazardous chemicals. Comparisons of environmental concentrations or calculated exposures or risks with standards for protection of public health also do not provide equivalent indicators of potential risks. We propose a simple approach to comparative risk assessments in which calculated exposures to any hazardous substances are expressed relative to no-observed-effect levels (NOELs) or, preferably, lower confidence limits of benchmark doses (BMDLs) in humans. This approach provides an equivalent, science-based indicator of the relative risks posed by different exposures to any hazardous substances.  相似文献

In the absence of reliable morphological characters, or in conjunction with morphology-based identifications, meiofaunal turbellarians may also be identified using the nucleotide sequence of a portion of the large subunit of the ribosomal RNA (26/28S rRNA). A 284 base pair-long region of the 26/28S rRNA has been identified by isolating genomic DNA from ten species of turbellarians belonging to four orders, namely, the Proseriata, Macrostomida, Prolecithophora and Acoela. The proseriates had been collected from localities in Europe and Israel and were preserved in ethanol. The remaining turbellarians were isolated from intertidal sediment samples collected from two sites on the Maine and New Hampshire coast, USA in 1992. Amplification of the genomic DNA was carried out using two primers designed to match the nucleotide sequence of a portion of the 26/28S rDNA gene of the terrestrial nematode,Caenorhabditis elegans (Maupas 1900). This area consists of a highly variable, about 150 base pair-long region, called the D3 expansion segment, followed by a very conserved stretch of sequence. When folded into its secondary structure, the conserved region will form stem structures that correspond to helices 15 to 18 of theC. elegans structural model. The sequence alignment program PILEUP was used to perform a cluster analysis (unweighted pair group method using arthmetic averages, UPGMA) on the sequences. This analysis revealed that the helices allow for the classification of the turbellarians at the level of families and above, whereas if the D3 expansion segment itself was included in the analysis, intrageneric and intraspecific groupings could be established.  相似文献
