2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo- -dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) was detected in an earlier study in adipose tissue of U.S. veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. The levels appear to be directly related to the intensity of exposure1. We now report on a group of thirteen Vietnam veterans who were screened for 2,3,7,8-TCDD in adipose tissue. All the veterans had sought medical assistance and some had health effects that may be ascribed to exposure to 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Also included are control patients who were taken from the population of the U.S. 2,3,7,8-TCDD was detected in most of the adipose tissue samples at levels ranging from 2 to 14 ppt. No significant differences in the tissue levels of Vietnam veterans and the other persons were found in this preliminary study.  相似文献

A municipal sewage sludge from Syracuse, New York and a largely domestic sludge from Sodus, New York were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) using combined gas chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS). Concentrations in ppt of the following PCDDs were found in the syracuse sludge: tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (TCDDs), 150, hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (HxCDDs), 2100, heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (HCDDs), 6300, octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (OCDDs), greater than 60,000. The following ppt concentrations were found in the Sodus sludge: TCDDs, 7200, HxCDDs, 300, HCDDs, 900, OCDDs 7500. The TCDD was a single but not the highly toxic 2,3,7,8-isomer. PCDFs were mostly nondetectable in the sludges. The toxicology and potential for environmental contamination by these compounds are discussed.  相似文献

Digestive physiology and movement patterns of animal dispersers determine deposition patterns for endozoochorously dispersed seeds. We combined data from feeding trials, germination tests, and GPS telemetry of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) to (1) describe the spatial scale at which Asian elephants disperse seeds; (2) assess whether seasonal differences in diet composition and ranging behavior translate into differences in seed shadows; and (3) evaluate whether scale and seasonal patterns vary between two ecologically distinct areas: Sri Lanka's dry monsoon forests and Myanmar's (Burma) mixed-deciduous forests. The combination of seed retention times (mean 39.5 h, maximum 114 h) and elephant displacement rates (average 1988 m in 116 hours) resulted in 50% of seeds dispersed over 1.2 km (mean 1222-2105 m, maximum 5772 m). Shifts in diet composition did not affect gut retention time and germination of ingested seeds. Elephant displacements were slightly longer, with stronger seasonal variation in Myanmar. As a consequence, seed dispersal curves varied seasonally with longer distances during the dry season in Myanmar but not in Sri Lanka. Seasonal and geographic variation in seed dispersal curves was the result of variation in elephant movement patterns, rather than the effect of diet changes on the fate of ingested seeds.  相似文献

Phyto-remediation potential of Ipomoea aquatica for Cr(VI) mitigation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Phyto-remedial efficiency of Ipomoea aquatica was examined at different experimental conditions for a period of 3 months. This plant was selected due to its easy establishment, tolerance and growing easiness. In all trials, the I. aquatica was grown in coir dust to ensure an inert medium. Essential growth nutrients were supplied externally using Albert solution. Once plant growth conditions were fixed, the model system was spiked with Cr(VI) solution in the range of 7-90 ppm. Up to 28 ppm Cr(VI), I. aquatica exhibits uniform absorption characteristics showing over 75% removal of added Cr(VI). At this stage I. aquatica was not affected and it showed no toxicity symptoms. Therefore, it is suited as a potential phyto-remediant. Further I. aquatica is a vegetable particularly in Asian region; therefore caution has to be taken when selecting it for human consumption due to its high chromium accumulation capacity.  相似文献

ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard that specifies the requirements of environmental management systems (EMS). This study assessed the influence of top management commitment, applications of compliance and other requirements, operational control, monitoring and measurements, resource management and improvements as critical factors on successful implementation and the operation of the ISO 14001:2015, by considering organizations in Sri Lanka as a case study. A data collection was conducted via questionnaires and structured interviews from stakeholders who are directly responsible for the EMS such as environmental managers, quality mangers and general managers of the organizations, who are certified with ISO 14001:2015, and comparisons were undertaken. The statistical analysis of the critical factors has shown a significant positive effect on both large‐scale organizations and export‐oriented organizations on EMS implementation. Furthermore, the results indicate that the EMS adoption has created significant positive impacts on efficient energy and resource consumption within organizations.  相似文献
