Natural and human activities generate a significant amount of PM2.5 (particles ≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) into the surrounding atmospheric environments. Because of their small size, they can remain suspended for a relatively longer time in the air than coarse particles and thus can travel long distances in the atmosphere. PM2.5 is one of the key indicators of pollution and known to cause numerous types of respiratory and lung-related diseases. Due to poor implementation of regulations and a time lag in introducing the vehicle technology, levels of PM2.5 in most Asian cities are much worse than those in European environments. Dedicated reviews on understanding the characteristics of PM2.5 in Asian urban environments are currently missing but much needed. In order to fill the existing gaps in the literature, the aim of this review article is to describe dominating sources and their classification, followed by current status and health impact of PM2.5, in Asian countries. Further objectives include a critical synthesis of the topics such as secondary and tertiary aerosol formation, chemical composition, monitoring and modelling methods, source apportionment, emissions and exposure impacts. The review concludes with the synthesis of regulatory guidelines and future perspectives for PM2.5 in Asian countries. A critical synthesis of literature suggests a lack of exposure and monitoring studies to inform personal exposure in the household and rural areas of Asian environments.  相似文献

Spanwise surface heterogeneity beneath high-Reynolds number, fully-rough wall turbulence is known to induce a mean secondary flow in the form of counter-rotating streamwise vortices—this arrangement is prevalent, for example, in open-channel flows relevant to hydraulic engineering. These counter-rotating vortices flank regions of predominant excess(deficit) in mean streamwise velocity and downwelling(upwelling) in mean vertical velocity. The secondary flows have been definitively attributed to the lower surface conditions, and are now known to be a manifestation of Prandtl’s secondary flow of the second kind—driven and sustained by spatial heterogeneity of components of the turbulent (Reynolds averaged) stress tensor (Anderson et al. J Fluid Mech 768:316–347, 2015). The spacing between adjacent surface heterogeneities serves as a control on the spatial extent of the counter-rotating cells, while their intensity is controlled by the spanwise gradient in imposed drag (where larger gradients associated with more dramatic transitions in roughness induce stronger cells). In this work, we have performed an order of magnitude analysis of the mean (Reynolds averaged) transport equation for streamwise vorticity, which has revealed the scaling dependence of streamwise circulation intensity upon characteristics of the problem. The scaling arguments are supported by a recent numerical parametric study on the effect of spacing. Then, we demonstrate that mean streamwise velocity can be predicted a priori via a similarity solution to the mean streamwise vorticity transport equation. A vortex forcing term has been used to represent the effects of spanwise topographic heterogeneity within the flow. Efficacy of the vortex forcing term was established with a series of large-eddy simulation cases wherein vortex forcing model parameters were altered to capture different values of spanwise spacing, all of which demonstrate that the model can impose the effects of spanwise topographic heterogeneity (absent the need to actually model roughness elements); these results also justify use of the vortex forcing model in the similarity solution.  相似文献

Objective: The present study examines the accelerating and braking behaviors of drivers at different blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) in heterogeneous driving conditions using driving simulator experiments.

Methods: Eighty-two licensed drivers performed simulated driving in a rural road environment designed in the driving simulator at 4 BAC levels: 0.00, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.08%. Driving performance was analyzed using vehicle control variables such as mean acceleration and mean brake pedal force. Generalized linear mixed models were developed to quantify the effect of different alcohol levels and explanatory variables such as driver’s age, gender, and other factors on the driving performance indicators.

Results: Alcohol use was reported as a significant factor affecting the accelerating and braking performance of drivers. The acceleration model results indicated that drivers’ mean acceleration increased by 0.013, 0.026, and 0.027 m/s2 for BAC levels of 0.03, 0.05, and 0.08%, respectively. Results of the brake pedal force model showed that drivers’ mean brake pedal force increased by 1.09, 1.32, and 1.44 N for BAC levels of 0.03, 0.05, and 0.08%, respectively. Age was a significant factor in both the models where a 1-year increase in driver age resulted in a 0.2% reduction in mean acceleration and a 19% reduction in mean brake pedal force. Driving experience could compensate for the negative effects of alcohol to some extent while driving.

Conclusions: The findings of the present study revealed that drivers tend to be more aggressive and impulsive under the influence of alcohol, which deteriorates their driving performance. Impairment in accelerating and braking behaviors of drivers under the influence of alcohol leads to increased crash probabilities. The conclusions may provide reference in making countermeasures against drinking and driving and contribute to traffic safety.  相似文献

The coarser (CPM) and respirable (RPM) fractions of aerosol loads collected in a time sequence, during the onset of winter season in Delhi region, were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (15 elemental variables, 39 samples); the absolute mass contributed by each identified source to the CPM and RPM was quantified by using Absolute Principal Component Score (APCS) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) method. Interestingly, the mass contributed by the local crustal source (material) to both fractions manifested undulating periodic behavior, a dominating harmonic corresponding to 24-h period was detected by using Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The corresponding harmonics, of varying strengths, were also detected in the recorded meteorological factors: Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), Surface Level Temperature (T), Surface Level Relative Humidity (RH) and Wind Speed (WS). The analysis of the respective harmonic strength within the CPM, RPM, and meteorological factors suggested that the undulation observed in both size fractions of aerosol load from the local crust was affected by the meteorological factors. The large proportion of undulating loads (CPM and RPM), explained by the dominating harmonic, was fully accounted for by the empirical relation involving the discrete coupling parameters, and the recorded meteorological factors: PBL, T, RH and WS. The analysis suggests that the magnitude and the direction (‘positive’ load increase and ‘negative’ the reverse) of coupled meteorological factors'(s) effect on ambient CPM, RPM load is determined by the phase difference between the harmonic explaining the aerosol fraction's load and the corresponding harmonic present in the respective meteorological factor. The absolute mass contributions arising from the identified sources (APCS and PMF) allowed us to calculate the baseline ambient concentrations of undulating CPM and RPM loads, in the region of this study, affected by meteorological factors only.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured in air samples at a remote air monitoring site established in the Yukon Territory, Canada as part of a global project (International Polar Year; IPY) to study the potential for atmospheric long-range transport of anthropogenic pollutants to the Arctic. Gas- and particle-phase PAH were collected in polyurethane foam plugs and on glass fibre filters respectively from August 2007 to October 2009. PAH concentrations were found to be highest in the winter months and lowest in summer. The gas/particle partitioning coefficients of 3–5 ringed PAH were computed and seasonal averages were compared. In the summer time, lower molecular mass PAH exhibited relatively higher partitioning into the particle-phase. This particle-phase partitioning led to the shallowest slopes being recorded during summer for the log–log correlation plots between the PAH partition coefficients and their sub-cooled vapour pressures. Air mass back trajectories suggest that local impacts may be more important during the summer time which is marked by increased camping activities at camping sites in the proximity of the sampling station. In conclusion, both summer and wintertime variations in PAH concentrations and gas/particle partitioning are considered to be source- and phototransformation-dependent rather than dependent on temperature-driven shifts in equilibrium partitioning.  相似文献

Utilizing oil extracted from waste engine oil and waste plastics, by pyrolysis, as a fuel for internal combustion engines has been demonstrated to be one of the best available waste management methods. Separate blends of fuel from waste engine oil and waste plastic oil was prepared by mixing with diesel and experimental investigation is conducted to study engine performance, combustion and exhaust emissions. It is observed that carbon monoxide (CO) emission increases by 50% for 50% waste plastic oil (50WPO:50D) and by 58% for 50% waste engine oil (50WEO:50D) at full load as compared to diesel. Unburnt hydrocarbon (HC) emission increases by 16% for 50WPO:50D and by 32% for 50WEO:50D as compared to diesel at maximum load. Smoke is found to decrease at all loading conditions for 50WPO:50D operation, but it is comparatively higher for 50WEO:50D operation. 50WPO:50D operation shows higher brake thermal efficiency for all loads as compared to 50WEO:50D and diesel fuel operation. Exhaust gas temperature is higher at all loads for 50WPO:50D and 50WEO:50D as compared to diesel fuel operation.
