A soil sampling intercomparison exercise for the ALMERA network   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Soil sampling and analysis for radionuclides after an accidental or routine release is a key factor for the dose calculation to members of the public, and for the establishment of possible countermeasures. The IAEA organized for selected laboratories of the ALMERA (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity) network a Soil Sampling Intercomparison Exercise (IAEA/SIE/01) with the objective of comparing soil sampling procedures used by different laboratories. The ALMERA network is a world-wide network of analytical laboratories located in IAEA member states capable of providing reliable and timely analysis of environmental samples in the event of an accidental or intentional release of radioactivity. Ten ALMERA laboratories were selected to participate in the sampling exercise. The soil sampling intercomparison exercise took place in November 2005 in an agricultural area qualified as a “reference site”, aimed at assessing the uncertainties associated with soil sampling in agricultural, semi-natural, urban and contaminated environments and suitable for performing sampling intercomparison. The paper reports a methodology adopted to face problems related to quality assurance in soil sampling. The SOILSAMP project, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency of Italy (APAT), is aimed at (i) establishing protocols for soil sampling in different environments; (ii) assessing uncertainties associated with different soil sampling methods in order to select the "fit-for-purpose" method; (iii) qualifying, in term of trace elements spatial variability, a reference site for national and international inter-comparison exercises. In the frame of the international SOILSAMP project, funded and coordinated by the National Environmental Protection Agency of Italy (APAT), uncertainties due to field soil sampling were assessed. Three different sampling devices were applied in an agricultural area using the same sampling protocol. Cr, Sc and Zn mass fractions in the collected soil samples were measured by k(0)-instrumental neutron activation analysis (k(0)-INAA). For each element-device combination the experimental variograms were calculated using geostatistical tools. The variogram parameters were used to estimate the standard uncertainty arising from sampling. The sampling component represents the dominant contribution of the measurement uncertainty with a sampling uncertainty to measurement uncertainty ratio ranging between 0.6 and 0.9. The approach based on the use of variogram parameters leads to uncertainty values of the sampling component in agreement with those estimated by replicate sampling approach.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Removal of streamside vegetation changes the energy balance of a stream, and hence its temperature. A common approach to mitigating the effects of logging on stream temperature is to require establishment of buffer zones along stream corridors. A simple energy balance model is described for prediction of stream temperature in forested headwater watersheds that allows evaluation of the performance of such measures. The model is designed for application to “worst case” or maximum annual stream temperature, under low flow conditions with maximum annual solar radiation and air temperature. Low flows are estimated via a regional regression equation with independent variables readily accessible from GIS databases. Testing of the energy balance model was performed using field data for mostly forested basins on both the west and east slopes of the Cascade Mountains, and was then evaluated using the regional equations for low flow and observed maximum reach temperatures in three different east slope Cascades catchments. A series of sensitivity analyses showed that increasing the buffer width beyond 30 meters did not significantly decrease stream temperatures, and that other vegetation parameters such as leaf area index, average tree height, and to a lesser extent streamside vegetation buffer width, more strongly affected maximum stream temperatures.  相似文献

Suspended particle adhesion on aquatic biota can significantly increase the apparent concentration of radionuclides above their endogenous value, leading to an overestimation of the uptake rate and concentration ratios. This study is an attempt to assess quantitatively the importance of suspended particle adhesion on periphyton samples (biological material coating submerged surfaces). The concentrations of 137Cs and stable Cs (133Cs) in periphyton, suspended particles and filtered water were measured to determine the net water-to-periphyton concentration ratios for 137Cs and stable Cs. The net amount of 133Cs (or 137Cs) taken up by periphyton was calculated by subtracting from the total amount of 133Cs (or 137Cs) on the collected material (periphyton + inorganic particles), the 133Cs (or 137Cs) due to the inorganic particles adhering to periphyton. The mass of suspended particles adhering to the periphyton surface was calculated using scandium as an indicator of the mineral fraction of the suspended particles. The relationship between the concentration ratios for 137Cs and stable Cs and suspended particle adhesion on periphyton external surfaces is discussed.  相似文献

Temora stylifera adult copepods were fed with four different monoalgal diets and six combinations of the same cultures for 15 days. Fecundity, hatching success, number of cannibalized embryos, fecal pellet production, adult mortality and naupliar recruitment were compared, in order to find the best diet for this species. Phytoplankton species tested were Prorocentrum minimum (PRO); Isochrysis galbana (ISO); Tetraselmis suecica (TETRA) and Rhodomonas baltica (RHO) which were supplied alone or in different combinations and at various concentrations ranging from a minimum of 1 mg C L−1 day−1 to a maximum of 66 mg C L−1 day−1. Of the ten diets tested, ISO was the worst and was unable to sustain egg production and adult survival possibly because adults were unable to ingest this alga due to its small size. TETRA was also a poor food since it negatively impacted egg production and adult survival, as well as egg hatching success, possibly due to the lack of essential compounds necessary for optimal embryogenesis. RHO and PRO were the best foods inducing highest egg production, hatching success and naupliar recruitment. Even if mean egg production rates were similar to those obtained with some mixed diets, carbon intake concentrations with mixed diets were from 3 to 33 and from 6.6 to 66 times higher than with RHO and PRO given alone, respectively. Mixed diets of ISO and PRO, especially when supplied at higher concentrations (66 mg C L−1 day−1), had a negative effect on egg hatching success and adult survival, with a corresponding reduction in naupliar recruitment. On the other hand, mixed diets of TETRA and PRO promoted high naupliar recruitment but values were similar to PRO offered alone. Our results indicate that a good monoalgal diet such as RHO and PRO can be as effective as a mixed diet to sustain the mass cultivation of T. stylifera.  相似文献

Experimental relationships between the mass concentration of suspended particulate matter and the optical density of particulates collected on paper tape have been determined for the atmospheric aerosol and for aerosols of constant optical properties. Simultaneous samples were obtained on membrane filters (for gravimetric analysis) and on Whatman No. 4 paper tape (for optical evaluation). Sampling procedures were adopted which ensured that the efficiency of sampling was the same in both cases.

Consistent relationships between mass concentrations of suspended particulate matter and optical density expressed in terms of per cent transmittance or per cent reflectance were found for dispersions of coal, limestone, fly ash, and a coal-limestone mixture.

For atmospheric aerosol samples collected on the roof of the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, the relationship between mass concentration and per cent transmittance or per cent reflectance was found to be linear over the range of values observed. The correlation coefficients were ?0.93 (for concentration versus per cent transmittance) and ?0.89 (for concentration versus per cent reflectance).  相似文献
