The MAREL Iroise data buoy provides physico-chemical measurements acquired in surface marine water in continuous and autonomous mode. The water is pumped 1.5 m from below the surface through a sampling pipe and flows through the measuring cell located in the floating structure. Technological innovations implemented inside the measuring cell atop the buoy allow a continuous cleaning of the sensor, while injection of chloride ions into the circuit prevents biological fouling. Specific sensors for temperature, salinity, oxygen and fluorescence investigated in this paper have been evaluated to guarantee measurement precision over a 3 month period. A bi-directional link under Internet TCP-IP protocols is used for data, alarms and remote-control transmissions with the land-based data centre. Herein, we present a 29 month record for 4 parameters measured using a MAREL buoy moored in a coastal environment (Iroise Sea, Brest, France). The accuracy of the data provided by the buoy is assessed by comparison with measurements of sea water weekly sampled at the same site as part of SOMLIT (Service d'Observation du Milieu LIToral), the French network for monitoring of the coastal environment. Some particular events (impact of intensive fresh water discharges, dynamics of a fast phytoplankton bloom) are also presented, demonstrating the worth of monitoring a highly variable environment with a high frequency continuous reliable system.  相似文献

This work focuses on the exposure of maize plants to nanomolar concentrations of Cd, which is relevant for agricultural soils cropped with food and feed plants. Maize plants were cultivated in nutrient solution at 0.8 or 20 nM Cd during the vegetative growth stages. No significant hormesis or toxic effects of Cd were observed on maize growth, but a decrease in the allocation of Cd to shoots between the 0.8 and 20 nM Cd exposures revealed that the plants already responded to these low concentrations of Cd according to a shoot Cd excluder strategy. The Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in shoots decreased with time as the result of an early decrease in the root/shoot ratio and of a decrease in the coefficient of allocation to aboveground for Zn and Cd at 20 nM. As a consequence, shoots of young plants were richer in micronutrients Cu and Zn but also in toxic Cd. The rate of delivery of Cd, Cu and Zn from xylem sap was successfully used to predict the time course of concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn in the shoot. However, it overestimated the actual concentrations of Cd in the shoot, presumably because the reallocation of this trace element from shoots back to roots was not taken into account.  相似文献

The recent risk assessment by the North-Cotentin Radioecology Group (, 1999) outlined that (14)C has become one of the major sources of the low dose to man through seafood consumption. It was recommended that more data should be collected about (14)C in the local marine environment. The present study aims to respond to this recommendation. The estimation of (14)C activity in marine species is based on concentration factor values. The values reported here ranged from 1x10(3) to 5x10(3)Bqkg(-1)ww/BqL(-1). A comparison was made between the observed and predicted values. The accuracy of (14)C activity calculations was estimated between underestimation by a factor of 2 and over-estimation by 50% (95% confidence interval). However, the use of the concentration factor parameter is based on the biological and seawater compartments being in steady state. This assumption may not be met at short distances from the point of release of discharges, where rapid changes in seawater concentration may be smoothed out in living organisms due to transfer kinetics. The data processing technique, previously published by Fiévet and Plet (2003. Estimating biological half-lives of radionuclides in marine compartments from environmental time-series measurements. Journal of Environmental Radioactivity 65, 91-107), was used to deal with (14)C transfer kinetics, and carbon half-lives between seawater and a few biological compartments were thus estimated.  相似文献

Following uptake of technetium-95m and americium-241 by lobsters (Homarus gammarus) from food, the subcellular distribution and binding in the major organ of accumulation, the digestive gland, were analysed.95mTc was predominantly bound to soluble proteins; approximately 40% was bound to two proteins displaying the same elution characteristics as Cdthioneins as indicated by gel permeation and ion-exchange chromatography, indicating reduction and sequestration by metallothionein in vivo. The identity of a third anionic low molecular weight Tc-binding component was not established. No evidence was found for binding of Tc to haemocyanin, ferritin or transferrin. Particulate Tc [probably TcO(OH)2] was bound to plasma membranes and was also present in lysosomes, indicating reduction of pertechnetate and pinocytosis in the digestive gland. In contrast,241Am was mainly sequestered by the lysosomal/vacuolar system, indicative of uptake by pinocytosis. Approximately 2 to 3% of the Am was bound to ferritin and 20% was bound to unidentified ligands of 10 and 20 kdaltons mol. wt. There was no evidence for sequestration of Am by metallothionein. These studies prove that waste radionuclides discharged by the nuclear industry are metabolically active and enter the normal metal metabolism and detoxication pathways of a marine shellfish.  相似文献

Behavioural patterns of Nereis virens (Sars) were monitored in the laboratory to determine variations in the time budget (i.e., percentage of time spent in various activities) as a function of density and acclimation period (number of days following the introduction of worms into experimental enclosures). Experiments were carried out from 17 June to 13 August 1989, using worms collected from intertidal sand flats of l'Anse à l'Orignal in the lower Saint Lawrence estuary, Canada. Inactivity, locomotion and irrigation were, in that order, the most frequent behaviours for solitary individuals. Correlations between the time spent in the various activities and time of day indicated a general increase in activity during the night (21.00 to 06.00 hrs). Locomotory activity increased at night, inactivity during the daytime. A general sequence of behaviour of N. virens was revealed. Inactivity, locomotion and irrigation were still the most frequent activities for individuals observed in high-density conditions, but their respective importance differed significantly (locomotion, irrigation and inactivity, in that order). There was also less variability in the time spent for each behaviour in the high-density aquarium. Comparisons between behaviour and time of day suggested fewer correlations among the different components of the time budgets under conditions of high density. Finally, the time budget varied but little over time (number of days alloved for acclimation) in the low-density aquarium as opposed to the high-density aquarium. Our study revealed that population density and acclimation are important in determining behavioural patterns of N. virens.  相似文献

The elemental carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) compositions of the whole-body and gut content of wild marine fish inhabiting the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic) were studied. Furthermore, the literature was examined for studies of aquacultured fish, reporting the elemental composition of the whole-body fish, that of their food, and nutrient assimilation and gross growth efficiencies (GGE). In both wild-caught and aquacultured fish, significant differences in C, N and P elemental composition were found between species, with P being the most variable component. Differences among species in terms of C, N and P content could be explained by varying proportions of storage compounds in whole-body fish, and varying degrees of ossification. Aquacultured fish feces were found to be P-rich, because of a lower P assimilation efficiency, compared to C or N assimilation efficiencies. Examination of aquacultured fish literature also revealed that C, N and P GGE and nutrient resupply ratios agreed with basic principles of homeostatic regulation of whole-body fish elemental composition. Extrapolation of the results to broader marine systems indicated that fish may be important for conveying nutrients toward the ocean interior.  相似文献

We studied organ and sub-cellular distributions of several trace metals in a freshwater bivalve that has been proposed for use as a metal biomonitor. Specimens of Pyganodon grandis were collected from nine lakes located along a Cd, Cu and Zn concentration gradient (Rouyn-Noranda area, Quebec). Gills and digestive gland were isolated, homogenized and six sub-cellular fractions were separated by differential centrifugation and analysed for their Cd, Cu and Zn content. Metallothionein was quantified independently. Gill tissues contained abundant calcium concretions that accounted for over 60% of the total gill burden of each metal. Cadmium and Zn concentrations in this granule fraction reflected ambient metal concentrations. Metal concentrations in the digestive gland also responded to the metal contamination gradient, but to a lesser extent than the gills, reflecting the lower abundance of granules in the digestive gland. Metals (Cd, Cu) in this organ were present largely in the "heat-stable proteins" fraction, and metal concentrations in this fraction were strongly correlated with those of both metallothionein and, to a lesser extent, the "lysosomes+microsomes" and "mitochondria" fractions. In both organs, Cd concentrations in the "heat-denaturable protein" fraction remained low and constant, suggesting reasonably effective metal detoxification. Some evidence for oxidative stress was noted in the gills but not in the digestive gland. Overall, we conclude that in nature metals in P. grandis are bound differently in the gills and in the digestive gland and that metal detoxification in the former organ may be less effective than in the latter.  相似文献

Concentrations and turbulent fluxes of accumulation mode particles were measured during the 2004–2005 ‘Canopy and Aerosol Particle Interaction in Toulouse Urban Layer’ project (CAPITOUL) at the top of two intersecting street canyons and in the urban boundary layer (UBL) in Toulouse, France. Particle numbers were strongly affected by boundary layer depth and showed limited sensitivity to local emissions. Differences in the diurnal patterns of particle numbers were observed between the finer fraction (0.3–0.4 μm) and coarser fraction (1.6–2.0 μm) of accumulation mode particles, indicating different processes of formation, evolution and transportation may be dominant. Highest particle numbers were observed in the narrow street canyon which had more limited local emissions and comparatively small particle fluxes. However, the improved ventilation rate in the wider canyon was also associated with the downward mixing of particles into the street canyon from the UBL. The results from this study clearly illustrate the temporal and spatial variability of particle numbers and fluxes in the urban atmosphere.  相似文献

Field study allows assessment of long-term effects on fatty acid (FA) composition of organisms under chronic exposure to metals. One expected effect of copper is peroxidation of lipids and essentially polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). FA analysis was established for the amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus subjected to different degrees of copper exposure (4–40 μg Cu L−1). A previous study in our team showed that this species regulates its body Cu concentration (106–135 mg Cu kg−1 dry weight). Despite the high capacity of bioaccumulation, the absence of a correlation between copper concentration in D. villosus and water prevents its use as bioindicator of copper pollution. Both sexes from the most polluted site showed the lowest total FA content, but the highest PUFA percent, mainly of the long-chained variety (C20–C22). Mechanisms leading to the prevention of lipid peroxidation in this species were discussed (metallothioneins and intracellular granules) and proposed with support from literature data.  相似文献
