Mosaicism for trisomy 13 and triploidy was detected by amniocentesis performed at 18 weeks' gestation because of fetal anomalies. Pregnancy continued and a live-born male was delivered vaginally at 37 weeks. The infant had features common to both trisomy 13 and triploidy: intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), small abnormal ears, cleft palate, and a small jaw. In addition, he had complete cutaneous syndactyly of fingers 3 and 4 and partial syndactyly of the toes, as seen in triploidy. Mixoploidy for trisomy 13 and triploidy was confirmed postnatally in blood, skin, and placenta. Examination of chromosome heteromorphisms and DNA markers suggested the presence of two maternal contributions in the triploid cell line. The introduction of non-native species has accelerated due to increasing levels of global trade and travel, threatening the composition and function of ecosystems. Upon arrival and successful establishment, biological invaders begin to spread and often do so with considerable assistance from humans. Recreational areas can be especially prone to the problem of accidental non-native species transport given the number of visitors that arrive from geographically diverse areas. In this paper, we examine camping permit data to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northwestern Wisconsin, USA, from 1999 to 2007 relative to gypsy moth distribution, phenology and outbreak data. During this time, gypsy moth populations became established in this area ahead of the moving population front of the gypsy moth, suggesting anthropogenic introduction. The permit data revealed that the majority of visitors arrived from outside of the gypsy moth established area. However, there was a consistent yearly trend of visitors that arrived from areas of high gypsy moth populations and who arrived during the gypsy moth life stage (egg masses) most likely to be successfully introduced. Using available data on the gypsy moth and its relationship to camping permit data, we describe how recreational managers could optimize park strategies to mitigate unwanted introductions of the gypsy moth as well as develop analogous strategies for managing other biological invaders in recreational areas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: An excellent hydrologic record on sagebrush range-land has been developed at the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwestern Idaho. The objectives of this paper were two-fold: (1) to analyze and describe the hydrologic record (8–18 years) from four sagebrush watersheds (1–83 ha); and (2) to evaluate the hydrology component of SPUR, a comprehensive rangeland model. The watersheds represent a gradient in elevation (1180–1658 m) and precipitation (240–350 mm/yr). Runoff was a small fraction (> 2 percent) of the total water budget for all of the watersheds. It occurred very infrequently at the three lower elevation watersheds: Summit, Flats, and Nancy Gulch. At Lower Sheep, the highest elevation watershed, runoff occurred most years for a period of 1 to 17 weeks in the winter. Frozen soil combined with rainfall or snowmelt was associated with most of the runoff from Flats and Nancy Gulch. At Summit summertime thunderstorms produced all of the runoff. The average annual sediment yield from all of the watersheds was low (17–950 kg/ha). It was highest from Summit, which had well developed alluvial channels and very steep slopes. SPUR was able to simulate runoff with reasonable accuracy only at Summit, where frozen soils were not a factor. There was poor correlation between predicted and actual annual 8ediment loss. The model tended to overpredict evapotranspiration early in the growing season and underpredict it in the late summer.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Most hydrologic models require input parameters which represent the variability found across an entire landscape. The estimation of such parameters is very difficult, particularly on rangeland. Improved model parameter estimation procedures are needed which incorporate the small-scale and temporal variability found on rangeland. This study investigates the use of a surface soil classification scheme to partition the spatial variability in hydrologic and interrill erosion processes in a sagebrush plant community. Four distinct microsites were found to exist within the sagebrush coppice-dune dune-interspace complex. The microsites explained the majority of variation in hydrologic and interrill erosion response found on the site and were discernable based on readily available soil and vegetation information. The variability within each microsite was quite low and was not well correlated with soil and vegetation properties. The surface soil classification scheme defined in this study can be quite useful for defining sampling procedures, for understanding hydrologic and erosion processes, and for parameterizing hydrologic models for use on sagebrush range-land.  相似文献

Selected hydrologic variables were evaluated following conversion of heavily wooded sites to open grassland with a herbicide—prescribed burning treatment sequence in east-central Texas. Terminal infiltration rates and sediment production 3 years after aerial application of tebuthiuron pellets at 2.2 kg ha?1 (active ingredient) for brush management differed little from values for untreated (wooded) areas. Prescribed burning in the winter (December–February) temporarily decreased infiltration rates and increased sediment production. Infiltration rates has equilibrated among brush management treatments with re-instatement of the herbaceous cover 5.5 months after burning. Sediment production was generally greater from burned than unburned plots after 5.5 months, but the absolute amount of sediment produced on the near-level (1–3% slope) fine sandy loam sites was not great, regardless of treatment. Moreover, sediment production from burned sites was not significantly different from that of untreated sites 1 year after burning. The brush management treatments had no effect on nitrate concentrations in run-off. However, in one of two experiments, total unfiltered nitrogen and phosphorus contents in run-off were greater during the growing season following burning than from unburned sites.  相似文献

IntroductionYard maintenance equipment is potentially dangerous, and some of the more frequency used equipment (e.g., lawn mowers) has been extensively studied. However, the extent of lawn trimmers as a source of injury has not previously been explored.MethodsData from the Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System were used to estimate the number of patients treated in U.S. emergency departments for lawn trimmer-related injuries. Injury rates were calculated according to age, sex, and race, and characteristics of the injury event were determined.ResultsAn estimated 81,907 injuries involving a lawn trimmer occurred from 2000–2009. The incidence generally increased over time. Men, people aged 40–49, and Caucasians were the groups most likely to be injured. The most commonly injured body part was the head, specifically the eye, accounting for 42.5% of the injuries. Contusions and abrasions were the most common type of injury to the head, but lacerations were the most common injury to the extremities, and strains/sprains were the most common injury to the trunk.DiscussionAlthough previous research on lawn trimmers has focused exclusively on injuries to the eyes, the results of the current study show that such injuries are one component of the problem. Because most of the injuries were due to foreign objects, it is important that the use of adequate safety gear be emphasized when operating lawn trimmers.Impact on IndustryResults suggest that lawn trimmer design changes and better safety education for trimmer use can reduce the rate of injury and reverse the current trend.  相似文献

Five standing stocks were measured together at similar latitudes and longitudes on seasonally repetitive cruises in 3 areas — western, eastern, and southern — of the eastern tropical Pacific. The stocks were chlorophyll a at 0 to 150 m depth (mg/m2), night and day zooplankton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3), and night crustacean micronekton and fish-pluscephalopod micronekton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3). The logarithms of the measurements of each stock in each area were subjected to analysis of variance with the following factors: season (2 month period), latitude, and longitude. Seasonal coverage was most comprehensive, with 7 successive periods, in the western area (approximately 16° N to 3° S latitude, 100° to 122° W longitude). Most stocks in most parts of the western area had a simple seasonal cycle of low amplitude, with a single maximum and minimum that usually differed by a factor <2; some stocks in some parts of the area exhibited no seasonal cycle; all statistically significant cycles, except for fish-plus-cephalopod micronekton, were similar in phase. In the other two areas, located broadly to the east and south of the western area, suitable measurements were made at only 2 periods (opposite seasons) of the year. There were indications of phase differences between chlorophyll a and zooplankton in the eastern area, which should be further investigated. Most standing stocks declined gradually from east to west, and were higher in known upwelling areas and areas of shoal thermocline than elsewhere.  相似文献
