River Sabarmati is one of the biggest and major river of Gujarat that runs through two major cities of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and finally meets the Gulf of Khambhat (GoK) in the Arabian Sea. A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of this river, as it could possibly be one of the major sources for filling up Kalpasar, the proposed man-made freshwater reservoir supposed to be the biggest one in the world. A total of nine sampling stations were established covering 163 km stretch of the river from upstream of Gandhinagar city to Vataman near Sabarmati estuary. Physicochemical (temprature, pH, salinity, chloride, total dissolved solids, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, phenol, and petroleum hydrocarbons), biological (phytoplankton), and microbiological (total and selective bacterial count) analyses indicated that the river stretch from Ahmedabad-Vasana barriage to Vataman was highly polluted due to perennial waste discharges mainly from municipal drainage and industries. An implementation of sustainable management plan with proper treatment of both municipal and industrial effluents is essential to prevent further deterioration of the water quality of this river.  相似文献

Potential of plants to remove radionuclides/toxic elements from soils and solutions can be successfully applied for removal of important radionuclides such as strontium-90 (90Sr) and cesium-137 (137Cs). When uptake of 137Cs and 90Sr by Calotropis gigantea plants incubated in distilled water spiked with the radionuclides either alone or in combination was studied, it was found to have a high efficiency for the removal of 90Sr, with 90% being removed from solutions (5 × 103 kBq l−1) within 24 h of incubation. However, in case of 137Cs, about 44% could be removed from solutions (5 × 103 kBq l−1) at the end of 168 h of incubation. Accumulation of 90Sr and 137Cs was higher in roots compared to shoots. The plants could remediate both 90Sr and 137Cs when they were added together to the solution. When two months old plants were incubated in low level nuclear waste, 99% of activity disappeared at the end of 15 days. The present study suggests that C. gigantea could be used as a potential candidate plant for phytoremediation of 90Sr and 137Cs.  相似文献

Beryllium concentrations in atmospheric particulate and soil samples in and around a Beryllium Processing Facility (BPF) have been measured. The mean air concentration level of beryllium in and around the fence line of the BPF is 0.48 ± 0.43 ng m-3 (n = 397) and is mostly influenced by diurnaland seasonal changes. The observed air concentration levelswere well below the prescribed ambient air quality (AAQ)standard of 10 ng m-3. The soil concentration levels ofberyllium in the study area were found to be in the range of 1.42–2.75 g g-1. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD)of beryllium aerosols in ambient air was found to be 6.9 m.Source identification using the Enrichment Factor (EF) approachindicates soil as the predominant contributory source for air concentrations at the site.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of temperature, pH, conductivity dissolved oxygen, phosphate and sulphate have been studied on the basis of physico-chemical characteristics of pond ecosystem. Importance of soil egg banks and their contribution to the diversity in freshwater ecosystem has been studied. We have focussed our attention on soil egg bank diversity and zooplankton emergence patterns of some recently dried aquatic habitats, comparing to that of neighbouring temporary pools with the permanent ponds. The emergence pattern from the soil egg bank followed an orderly succession from Protists-Rotifers and Crustaceans have been investigated. Dominant Protists emerged from the egg bank were Lacrymaria within rotifers. They were the first to emerge followed by Hexarthra blooms. The diversity of zooplankton in permanent ponds was significantly higher (i.e., 19) than the diversity in the ephemeral pools (i.e., 08). However; the zooplankton abundance in the ephemeral pools was higher with more than an order of magnitude, than that in ponds. Interestingly the number of species recorded in the egg bank was more than those present in the water columns of the pools. We have recorded 08 species of rotifera i.e. Lecane sp L curvicornis, L. bulla, K. quadrata, B. patulus, B. rubens, Branchionus calyciflorus, Testudinella sp which were not present in the neighboring permanent or ephemeral waterbodies during that period. Unequivocally suggest that in order to understand the zooplankton biodiversity; it is also important to evaluate the diversity of egg bank present in the sediment. A total 19 species were recorded including Copepoda 06 sp, Cladocera 05 sp and Rotifera 08 sp.  相似文献
