Policing behavior that prevents workers from laying male eggs was examined in the monogynous and monandrous ponerine ant Diacamma sp. from Japan, in which a singly mated worker called a “gamergate” reproduces as the functional queen in each colony. Since oviposition by virgin workers is rare in the presence of a gamergate, we separated a portion of workers from the gamergates and induced their oviposition experimentally. When orphaned workers had started to oviposit, they were returned to the original colonies, where they continued to lay eggs for a while. The gamergates and other workers interfered with the laying workers by aggressively taking and finally eating the eggs. In total, 60% and 29% of the worker-derived eggs were eaten by gamergates and non-mother workers, respectively. The observed worker-worker interactions were not driven simply by competition to leave own sons, because non-laying non-orphaned workers interfered with worker reproduction. Furthermore, orphaned workers were usually attacked by non-orphaned workers soon after colony reunification. These results indicate that both queen policing by gamergates and worker policing in this species are mechanisms inhibiting worker oviposition. The gamergate contribution to policing was proportionately larger than that of workers, but among virgin workers, the relationship between dominance rank and contribution to policing was not clear. But about 11% of the eggs were not policed and were added to egg piles, especially in large colonies. Worker policing in a monandrous and monogynous eusocial Hymenoptera contrasts to other recent findings, and possible genetic, social, and ecological factors for its evolution in Diacamma sp. are discussed. A regional climate change impact assessment was conducted which investigated the timing of the first appearance of furunculosis caused by the bacterium, Aeromonas salmonicida, in fish of the Ouje-Bougoumou region of northern Quebec, Canada. Historical data were used to assess whether there was a temporal relationship between increased temperatures (observed climate data) and the appearance of furunculosis (traditional environmental knowledge was used to provide context). To project future impacts of climate change, climate models and lake models were used. Regression analysis revealed a significant, positive temporal trend in mean air temperature. The temperature range conducive to A. salmoncida survival coincided with the first appearance of furunculosis. In addition, it is predicted that lake temperatures will remain suitable for the presence of A. salmonicida into the future; it is likely that the disease will persist throughout the twenty-first century. Climate change appears to be a factor explaining the onset of furunculosis; however, other factors/stressors cannot be discounted, such as, the effects past mining activities near the lakes of the Ouje-Bougoumou region have had on the body burden of contaminants in the fish (and the potential effects on the fish immune system).  相似文献

Summary Two types of workers were recognized in colonies of Pristomyrmex pungens: extranidal workers (which characteristically walk outside the nest) and intranidal workers (which characteristically stay inside the nest). The ovaries of extranidal workers showed little activity, whereas those of intranidal workers showed high activity and often contained mature oocytes. I therefore conclude that only the intranidal workers reproduce. A behavioral repertoire of 103 individuals was obtained and used to infer group subdivision using cluster analysis; in addition, principal component analysis was performed on the intranidal workers in this set. These data enabled objective separation of extranidal and intranidal workers. Intranidal workers were larger in size on average than extranidal workers; however, the distributions overlapped. Three tests for further subdivision within the group of intranidal workers indicated that such subdivision is weak, and it is also likely that all intranidal workers lay eggs. There was no significant correlation between body size and reproductive status. The number of mature oocytes per ant fitted a Poisson distribution, and the first two principal component factors scores of behavior showed significant correlation with head width. All extranidal workers had resorbed ovaries and also had yellow bodies (which indicated a history of oviposition). When and how the differentiation between the reproductive intranidal workers and the non-reproductive extranidal workers occurred is discussed. The best-supported hypothesis is that extranidal workers are old intranidal ones. Neither males nor inseminated workers were found in any smaples collected in the field or studied in the laboratory, which greatly strengthens earlier suggestions that Pristomyrmex pungens is the first-known ant to be obligately thelytokous. These findings indicate that Pristomyrmex pungens is no longer eusocial, although it has the highest form of social behavior of any thelytokous species; they also raise the question of whether or not there are factors promoting the loss of eusociality and sexuality in this species. Ecological factors are tentatively indicated, namely, the need to maintain large colonies in the face of a nomadic lifestyle involving frequent colony fragmentation.  相似文献

Effects of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) on thyroid hormone and immune response systems were examined in 16 Yusho patients at about 30 years after the outbreak of the Yusho accident. Their toxic equivalent (TEQ) levels in the blood were 27.8-1048.5 pg/g fat with the median level of 222.4 pg/g fat, which was about seven times higher than that of healthy Japanese people. Even at such high blood TEQ concentrations, they seemed not to affect the serum levels of thyroid hormones, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), immunoglobulins (A, G and M), autoantibodies (antinuclear antibody, rheumatoid and lupus erythematosus (LE) factors), and lymphocyte subsets in the blood. However, positive rates of rheumatoid factor were considered to increase in higher blood TEQ groups. This investigation was done using rather small number of Yusho patients, so further large-scale investigations are needed to get more conclusive findings concerning their effects on thyroid hormone and immune response systems.  相似文献

Colony level sex allocation in a polygynous and polydomous ant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The colony-level sex allocation pattern of eusocial Hymenoptera has attracted much attention in recent studies of evolutionary biology. We conducted a theoretical and empirical study on this subject using the dolichoderine ant Technomyrmex albipes. This ant is unusual in having a dispersal polymorphism in both males and females. New colonies are founded by an alate female after mating with one or more alate males in the nuptial flight. In mature colonies, the reproductive role of the foundress queen is taken over by wingless offspring (supplementary reproductives). Mature colonies are extremely polygynous, with many wingless queens reproducing through intea-colonial mating with wingless males (inbreeding), and producing both alate and wingless sexuals. The population sex ratio of wingless sexuals was found to be extremely female-biased, while the population allocation ratio of alates was almost 1:1. This result suggests that there is local mate competition among wingless sexuals. A specific model for this extraordinary life cycle predicted that the asymmetry of regression relatedness (b f/b m) will disappear during the first few generations of wingless reproductives after the foundress dies. If colonies begin to produce alates after several wingless generations, this undermines the hypotheses for intercolonial sex ratio variation based on the relatedness asymmetry. We compared the magnitude of variation in sex ratios and other characteristics between two levels (within-colony-inter-nest and between-colony). Although there was considerable within-colony variation in all the examined characteristics, between-colony variances were always larger. This means that allocation is important at the whole-colony level, not that of the nest. There was no apparent correlation between the sex ratio of alates and colony size. Furthermore, partial correlation analysis indicated that neither the number of workers nor investment in alates explained the variation in the sex ratio of alates. The only factor which was significantly correlated with the sex ratio of alates was the sex ratio of wingless sexuals (a positive correlation). We conclude that both the alate and wingless sex ratios may be influenced by a common primary sex ratio at the egg stage, the variance of which may have genetic components. In the wingless sexuals, partial correlation analysis indicated that colony size and the number of workers explained the sex allocation ratio. The number of wingless females was strongly (positively) correlated with the total investment in wingless sexuals, while the number of males showed no such correlation. There is, however, no convincing explanation for the variation in sex allocation ratio of wingless sexuals, because the estimates of investment in wingless males may have a large sampling error. To develop a method for the determination of photosynthetic pigment species in individual phytoplankton cells, especially natural picophytoplankton cells, the fluorescence spectra of intact cells were studied with cultured phytoplankton. The study was made mainly with phycoerythrin-containing picophytoplankton collected off Japan in 1982 with reference to diatomal species and phycoerythrin-free cyanophycean species. The spectra were measured for cell suspensions with an ordinary spectrofluorometer, and for individual cells with a microscope spectrofluorometer, paying special attention to the effect of cell-fixation. Results indicated that: (1) the cell-fixation with the glutaraldehyde and paraformaldehyde mixture modified phycoerythrin emission from picophytoplankton markedly in its wavelength location and intensity, but (2) the emission from phycocyanin was affected far less, and (3) the emission from chlorophyll a was not altered. However, the phycoerythrin emission modified by the fixation was found to be easily distinguished from other emissions, and kept its intensity high enough for detection with a fluorescence microscope. The fluorescence properties after the fixation were kept unaltered for a long period of time. Based on the results, we propose a simple method for the determination of photosynthetic pigments in individual phytoplankton cells in seas and lakes using fluorescence microscopy. Results of our tests with natural samples of phytoplankton are presented, and problems for further improvement are also discussed.  相似文献

The queenless ant Pristomyrmex pungens has an unusual social structure, in which all workers reproduce parthenogenetically and help others. Laboratory experiments manipulating the proportion of post-reproductive foragers in the colony at various rates suggested that colonies with 5–10% forager ratios had the maximum efficiency per-worker. This result suggests that the cooperative colonies may be maintained by colony-level natural selection. Non-cooperative mutants that oviposit but do not forage should increase in relative frequency in the colony in the short term. However, decreased colony productivity and the resulting competition among colonies might eliminate colonies dominated by such mutants in the long term. P. pungens has a viscous population without migration between colonies, which may facilitate this process.  相似文献

In temperate regions, older eusocial hymenopteran females with annual life cycles (annual-temperate) tend to dominate younger females, a behavior demonstrated by many Polistes. However, in queenless ponerine ants and primitively eusocial tropical wasps (perennial/tropical), a younger female can be dominant and occasionally takes over from the older, most dominant reproductive female, the alpha. We investigated these patterns using an inclusive fitness model. The most important difference between the above two cases lay in the length of individual life compared with colony life. Colonies dissolve before winter in the annual-temperate case, so the expected future tenure of the replacement alpha is never longer than that of the original alpha. This makes the non-reproductive subordinate tactic more advantageous for individuals that emerge later in the season because of the fitness cost of superseding. The perennial/tropical case does not have a clear upper limit for colony longevity, so the model predicts that late-born younger daughters are more likely to challenge their mother-alpha because of the expected long future tenure of the new alpha compared with the small indirect cost of the mothers reproductive failure. To switch tactics from being a subordinate to being the new alpha is only optimal in some situations. The high mortality rate of subordinate workers does not qualitatively alter the above pattern. The specific sexual production schedule of the colony sometimes affects the optimal behavior of females in the perennial/tropical case, and older individuals can dominate younger ones when the end of current round of sexual production is imminent.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at  相似文献

Highly toxic organochlorine chemicals such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (CoPCBs) were determined in the peripheral blood and sebum from the face of 16 "Yusho" patients of about 27 yr after the outbreak of Yusho accident, and 39 healthy Japanese people. The mean total toxic equivalent (TEQ) levels of PCDDs, PCDFs and CoPCBs in the blood were still about seven times higher in Yusho patients than in healthy Japanese at the age of 45 yr and more. The sebum excretion of these chemicals seemed proportional to their blood levels in Yusho patients. These toxic chemicals, however, did not enhance frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in the control and 7,8-benzoflavone (ANF) treated cultures in Yusho patients. Hence, no significant difference was observed in the mean SCE rates between the Yusho patients and general Japanese people of more than 45 yr of age. In this study, the number of Yusho patients examined is limited, so further large-scale investigations are needed to get more conclusive results concerning the genotoxic potency such as SCE induction.  相似文献
