AusRivAS is an Australia-wide program that measures river condition using predictive models to compare the macroinvertebrate
families occurring at a river site with those expected if the site were in natural condition. Results of assessment of 685
sites across all major rivers in Western Australia are presented. Most rivers were in relatively natural condition in the
northern half of the state where the human population is low and pastoralism is the major land use. In the south, where the
human population is higher and agriculture is more intensive, rivers were mostly more disturbed. AusRivAS assessment produced
some erroneous results in rivers of the south-west cropping zone because of the lack of appropriate reference site groups
and biased distribution of sampling sites. Collecting low numbers of animals from many forested streams, because of low stream
productivity and samples that were difficult to sort, also affected assessments. Overall, however, AusRivAs assessment identified
catchment processes that were inimical to river health. These processes included salinisation, high nutrient and organic loads,
erosion and loss of riparian vegetation. River regulation, channel modification and fire were also associated with river degradation.
As is the case with other assessment methods, one-off sampling at individual sites using AusRivAS may be misleading. Seasonal
drought, in particular, may make it difficult to relate conditions at the time of sampling to longer-term river health. AusRivAS
has shown river condition in Western Australia is not markedly different from other parts of Australia which, as a whole,
lacks the substantial segments of severely degraded river systems reported in England. 相似文献

a ), and nutrient availability (phosphorus and nitrogen). High variability in these limnological characteristics, particularly
among impoundments, obscured potential differences between impoundments and ponds. No significant differences were found in
chlorophyll or nutrient concentrations, and in only two cases were there differences in invertebrate production: gastropods
were significantly more abundant in impoundments than in ponds in June, and trichopterans were significantly more abundant
in impoundments than in ponds in July. For comparisons within impoundments and ponds, there were significant differences in
invertebrate abundance between habitats and between wetland types. For example, plecopterans, trichopterans, and gastropods
(all taxa combined) were consistently more abundant in shallow–Arctophila impoundments and ponds than in shallow–Carex impoundments and ponds. Thus, ponds and impoundments may differ significantly in invertebrate production, but we lack information
on the amount of different habitat types (i.e., center versus emergent vegetation, Carex versus Arctophila) used by these taxa within each water body type. It is a reasonable speculation, based on results of this study, that impoundments
and ponds may have similar value as feeding habitat for invertebrate-eating waterbirds. Thus the presence of impoundments
may be consistent with waterbird management goals on the Arctic Coastal Plain. 相似文献

Recovery of lotic macroinvertebrate communities from disturbance 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
J. Bruce Wallace 《Environmental management》1990,14(5):605-620
Ecosystem disturbances produce changes in macrobenthic community structure (abundances, biomass, and production) that persist
for a few weeks to many decades. Examples of disturbances with extremely long-term effects on benthic communities include
contamination by persistent toxic agents, physical changes in habitats, and altered energy inputs. Stream size, retention,
and local geomorphology may ameliorate the influence of disturbances on invertebrates. Disturbances can alter food webs and
may select for favorable genotypes (e.g., insecticidal resistance). Introductions of pesticides into lotic ecosystems, which
do not result in major physical changes within habitats, illustrate several factors that influence invertebrate recovery time
from disturbance. These include: (1) magnitude of original contamination, toxicity, and extent of continued use; (2) spatial
scale of the disturbance; (3) persistence of the pesticide; (4) timing of the contamination in relation to the life history
stages of the organisms; (5) vagility of populations influenced by pesticides; and (6) position within the drainage network.
The ability of macroinvertebrates to recolonize denuded stream habitats may vary greatly depending on regional life histories,
dispersal abilities, and position within the stream network (e.g., headwaters vs larger rivers). Although downstream drift
is the most frequently cited mechanism of invertebrate recolonization following disturbance in middle- and larger-order streams,
evidence is presented that shows aerial recolonization to be potentially important in headwater streams. There is an apparent
stochastic element operating for aerial recolonization, depending on the timing of disturbance and flight periods of various
taxa. Available evidence indicates that recolonization of invertebrate taxa without an aerial adult stage requires longer
periods of time than for those that possess winged, terrestrial adult stages (i.e., most insects). Innovative, manipulative
experiments are needed in order to address recolonization mechanisms of animals inhabiting streams that differ in size, latitude,
disturbance frequency and magnitude, as well as the potential influence of early colonists on successional sequences of species
following disturbance. 相似文献

Macroinvertebrates were examined on an impounded valley marsh in Stonington, Connecticut, that has changed from aTypha-dominated system to one with typical salt-marsh vegetation during 13 years following the reintroduction of tidal exchange.
Animal populations on this restored impounded marsh were evaluated by comparing them with populations on a nearby unimpounded
valley marsh of roughly the same size. Populations of the high marsh snail,Melampus bidentatus Say, were quantitatively sampled along transects that extended from the water-marsh edge to the upland; those of the ribbed
mussel,Geukensia demissa Dillwyn, were sampled in low marsh areas on transects along the banks of creeks and mosquito ditches. The occurrence of other
marsh invertebrates also was documented, but their abundance was not measured. The mean density ofMelampus was 332±39.6 SE/m2 on the restored impounded marsh and 712±56.0 SE/m2 on the unimpounded marsh. However, since snails were larger on the restored impounded marsh, the difference in snail biomass
was less pronounced than the difference in snail density. MeanMelampus biomass was 4.96±0.52 SE g dry wt/m2 on the restored impounded marsh and 6.96±0.52 SE g dry wt/m2 on the unimpounded marsh. On the two marshes, snail density and biomass varied in relation to plant cover and other factors.
The density and biomass ofGeukensia at the edge of the marsh were comparable on the restored impounded and unimpounded marshes. Mean mussel densities ranged
from 80 to 240/m2 and mean mussel biomass varied from 24.8–64.8 g dry wt/m2 in different low marsh areas. In contrast, below the impoundment dike, meanGeukensia density was 1100±96.4 SE/m2 and meanGeukensia biomass was 303.6±33.28 SE g dry wt/m2. A consideration of all available evidence leads to the conclusion that the impounded marsh is in an advanced phase of restoration. 相似文献

Our lack of understanding of relationships between stream biotic communities and surrounding landscape conditions makes it
difficult to determine the spatial scale at which management practices are best assessed. We investigated these relationships
in the Minnesota River Basin, which is divided into major watersheds and agroecoregions which are based on soil type, geologic parent material, landscape slope steepness, and climatic factors affecting crop productivity.
We collected macroinvertebrate and stream habitat data from 68 tributaries among three major watersheds and two agroecoregions.
We tested the effectiveness of the two landscape classification systems (i.e., watershed, agroecoregion) in explaining variance
in habitat and macroinvertebrate metrics, and analyzed the relative influence on macroinvertebrates of local habitat versus
regional characteristics. Macroinvertebrate community composition was most strongly influenced by local habitat; the variance
in habitat conditions was best explained at the scale of intersection of major watershed and agroecoregion (i.e., stream habitat
conditions were most homogeneous within the physical regions of intersection of these two landscape classification systems).
Our results are consistent with findings of other authors that most variation in macroinvertebrate community data from large
agricultural catchments is attributable to local physical conditions. Our results are the first to test the hypothesis and
demonstrate that the scale of intersection best explains these variances. The results suggest that management practices adjusted
for both watershed and ecoregion characteristics, with the goal of improving physical habitat characteristics of local streams,
may lead to better basin-wide water quality conditions and stream biological integrity. 相似文献

Stream restoration practices are becoming increasingly common, but biological assessments of these improvements are still
limited. Rock weirs, a type of constructed riffle, were implemented in the upper Cache River in southern Illinois, USA, in
2001 and 2003–2004 to control channel incision and protect high quality riparian wetlands as part of an extensive watershed-level
restoration. Construction of the rock weirs provided an opportunity to examine biological responses to a common in-stream
restoration technique. We compared macroinvertebrate assemblages on previously constructed rock weirs and newly constructed
weirs to those on snags and scoured clay streambed, the two dominant substrates in the unrestored reaches of the river. We
quantitatively sampled macroinvertebrates on these substrates on seven occasions during 2003 and 2004. Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera,
and Trichoptera (EPT) biomass and aquatic insect biomass were significantly higher on rock weirs than the streambed for most
sample periods. Snags supported intermediate EPT and aquatic insect biomass compared to rock weirs and the streambed. Nonmetric
multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinations for 2003 and 2004 revealed distinct assemblage groups for rock weirs, snags, and
the streambed. Analysis of similarity supported visual interpretation of NMDS plots. All pair-wise substrate comparisons differed
significantly, except recently constructed weirs versus older weirs. Results indicate positive responses by macroinvertebrate
assemblages to in-stream restoration in the Cache River. Moreover, these responses were not evident with more common measures
of total density, biomass, and diversity. 相似文献

Salinisation of freshwater has been identified as a serious environmental issue in Australia and around the world. Protective concentrations (trigger values) for salinity can be used to manage salinity impacts, though require locally relevant salinity tolerance information. 72-h acute salinity tolerance values were determined for 102 macroinvertebrates collected from 11 locations in four biologically distinct freshwater bio-regions in Northeast Australia and compared with sensitivities observed in Southeast Australia. The salinity tolerance of individual taxa was consistent across Northeast Australia and between Northeast and Southeast Australia. However, two distinct communities were identified in Northeast Australia using distributions of the acute tolerance values and a calculated index of salinity sensitivity. Salinity trigger values should therefore be representative of local or regionally relevant communities and may be adequately calculated using sensitivity values from throughout Eastern Australia. The results presented provide a basis for assessing salinity risk and determining trigger values for salinity in freshwater ecosystems at local and regional scales in Eastern Australia. 相似文献

An understanding of the causal mechanisms and processes that shape macroinvertebrate communities at a local scale has important implications for the management and conservation of freshwater biodiversity. Here we compare the performance of linear and non-linear statistics to explore diversity-environment relationships using data from 76 temporary and fluctuating ponds in two regions of southern England. We focus on aquatic beetle assemblages, which have been shown to be excellent surrogates of wider freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity. Ponds in the region contained a rich coleopteran fauna, totaling 68 species, which provided an excellent model system with which to compare the performance of two non-linear procedures (artificial neural networks—ANNs and generalised additive models—GAMs) and one more traditional linear approach (Multiple linear regression—MLR) to modelling diversity-environment relationships. Of all approaches employed, the best fit was obtained using an ANN model with only four input variables (conductivity, turbidity, magnesium concentration and depth). This model accounted for 82% of the observed variability in Shannon diversity index across ponds. In contrast, the best GAM and MLR models only explained 50% and 14% of this variation, respectively. Contribution profile analysis of conductivity, turbidity, magnesium concentration and depth, obtained from the best fit ANN through a hierarchical cluster analysis, allowed the identification of direct and proxy effects in relation to the environmental variables measured in this study. In each case, distinct clusters of ponds were identified in contribution profile analysis, suggesting that ponds across the two regions fall into a number of discrete groups, whose beetle faunas respond in subtly yet significantly different ways to key environmental variables. Aquatic coleopteran diversity in ponds in the two regions appears to be driven at a local scale by changes in relatively few physicochemical gradients, which are related to diversity in a clearly non-linear manner. 相似文献
