Abstract: | Little formal recognition is given in Canadian mineral management to the inevitable socioeconomic changes induced by mine closure. This paper documents and evaluates government and non-government arrangements to ameliorate socioeconomic impacts of mine closure at the Marmoraton Mining Company in Ontario during 1978. Measures used to reduce detrimental socioeconomic hardships of mine terminations on Canadian communities are presented. The principles may be useful in other countries which face similar problems. |
