Abstract:This paper describes a study intended to examine the toxic effects of fluoranthene on Navicula Ianceolata,the ubiquitously existed species of algae,in terms of its growth and characteristics of chlorophyll fluorescence.Equipment of pulse amplitude modulation(Water-PAM) was used to measure a string of parameters,such as Fν/Fm-the maximum light conversion efficiency of photo-system II(PS II);qP-photochemical quenching;NPQ-non-photochemical quenching;yield-PS II actual light conversion efficiency and ETR-the efficiency of photosynthetic electron transport.Result revealed that growth of N.Ianceolata was greatly suppressed by fluoranthene during the incubation for seven days,and at the same time,yield,ETR and Qp were remarkably enhanced too.However,no significant changes of Fν/Fm and NPQ were detected after being treated by fluoranthene in different concentrations.It has been also found that effects of fluoranthene,which inhibited growth of N.Ianceolata and stimulated yield,ETR and qP,were time dependent probably due to more consumption of nutrients in the medium or the degradation of fluoranthene caused by N.Ianceolata as time elapsed.
