Abstract:Detailed analyses of the seasonal changes in pigment composition of Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt growing at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight (UK) between April 1977 and June 1978 are presented. These show a large decrease in pigment content as growth proceeds. Laboratory experiments on the change in pigment content of winter-form plants are also reported. The high pigment contents of the winter-form plants and the dilution of pigments with growth are suggested to permit the rapid extension growth of this alga in the spring.
