Abstract: | Marine mammals are at the top of the marine food chain and, the-refore, show high concentrations of chlorinated organic compounds in their fatty tissue (blubber) By choosing the proper species it is possible to use marine mammals as bioindicators for chlorinated hydrocarbons in different marine environments. It is essential to choose a species whose habitat is confined to a restricted range. In addition to recording the age, sex, and, condition index of the bioindicator, information about its diet and metabolism should also be analyzed. |
