Analysis of The Combined Effects of Exposure to Multiple Pesticides on Fetal Development

In this paper analysed are the data from aprospective epidemiological investigation on womenwhose pregnancy outcomes occurred during theperiod 1988 - 1989 in a defined rural populstion(about 120000 in total) in Yingchen county. Therewere 5674 women studied. According to thenumbers of the pesticides which had ever been usedby their families during their gestation period, thesubjects were classified into eight cohorts and therelative risks for occurring various adversepresnancy outcomes of each cohort were calculated.The results showed that the more the numbers ofpesticider exposed, the more the risk for occurringspontaneous abortion and birth defect. There mightbe existed dose- response relationship between thenumbers of pesticide categories and the adverseeffects on fetal development. It is concluded thatmultiple pesticides used simultaneousely could haveinteracted with each other. Such combined effectswere more significant during the earlier stage ofpregnancy.
