Abstract:The concentrations of nonylphenol (NP), heavy metals, and nutrients in sewage sludge from 13 wastewater treatment plants in the Pearl River Delta region were evaluated. The concentrations of NP in sewage sludge from different wastewater treatment plants in the Pearl River Delta region were in the ranges of 0.45~65.17 mg·kg-1 dry weight (the same below), with mean value of 10.87 mg·kg-1. Industrial wastewater is an important factor affecting the NP concentration in the sludge of wastewater treatment plant. Compared with other regions of the world, the concentrations of NP in this study was at a lower level. The concentrations of NP in two wastewater treatment plants were higher than or close to the limit value (50 mg·kg-1) for the sum of NP, NP1EO, and NP2EO (NPE) concentrations, which was set by the European Union Sludge Directive draft published in April 2000. The geometrical mean values of Cu, Pb, Cd, and Zn were 435.43, 78.88, 2.72, and 1088.01 mg·kg-1, respectively. A few samples exceeded the limits set by ''discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant'' of China (GB18918-2002) for Cu, Pb and Zn in alkaline soils. Meanwhile, the average concentrations of organic matter, TN, TP and TK were 294.40, 12.92, 39.63, and 9.12 g·kg-1, respectively, which displayed the trend of increased average concentrations of organic matter and nutrient in the sludge. Statistical analysis results show significant positive correlation between the concentrations of NP and the concentrations of Cu in sewage sludge.
Keywords:sewage sludge  nonylphenol  heavy metals  organic matter  nutrient
