Abstract:The concentrations of 18 trace elements in atmospheric aerosol are measured by neutron activation and γ-ray spectrometry using Ge(Li)-detectors. Trace element concentrations of different filter materials used for aerosol deposition are determined. The trace element concentrations measured in Heidelberg are reported for the measuring period (April–June, 1971) and the average values are compared to values given in the literature for Paris. East Chicago and Niles (U.S.A.). Considering the concentrations of the different elements in the aerosol relative to the concentration of sodium, three groups of elements are of interest which are related to the ocean (Na and Cl), the earth crust (La, Fe, Sc, Mn, Cr, Ce, Sm), and to anthropogenous production (Cd, Ag, Sn. Sb, Hg, Co, Br) as the main sources.
