Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NO x) are hazardous air pollutants that lead to the formation of acid rain and tropospheric ozone. Concerns for environmental and health issues coupled with stringent NO x emission standards indicate a need for the development of efficient low-cost NO x reduction technologies. Biological removal of NO x from contaminated gas streams offers promise as a novel alternative treatment method. This BioDeNO x technology is an integrated physico-chemical and biological approach. A chelating agent is used to improve the NO x absorption into the scrubbing liquid and thereby obtaining high removal efficiencies. By this process, toxic nitrogen oxides are biologically converted into environmentally benign nitrogen gas. The progress achieved during recent years in BioDeNO x technology is illustrated through a number of examples. Eventually, perspective of this technology is evaluated.
