Abstract:A pilot-scale combined-bioreactor, consisting of a biotrickling filter unit and a biofilter unit, was developed to treat paint spray booth emissions from an automobile manufacturing plant. Treatment efficiencies of emissions, removal capacities of different pollutants and microbiological characteristics in individual unit were investigated in this study. The main components of paint spray booth emissions were toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, butanol, acetone, and methyl propyl ketone. Gaseous pollutants in the emissions can be removed efficiently by the combined-bioreactor, but the removal characteristics in two different units were different. Most of hydrophilic compounds such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, butanol and acetone were removed in the biotrickling filter unit and most of hydrophobic compounds such as toluene, xylene and methyl propyl ketone were removed in the biofilter unit. Types and quantities of dominant microorganisms in two units were different. The heterotrophic bacteria were dominant in the biotrickling filter unit, while both heterotrophic bacteria and fungi were abundant in the biofilter unit.
