Abstract:An electronic nose is a bionic instrument comprising an array of electronic chemical sensors with partial specificity and an appropriate pattern-recognition system,which mimic the mammal olfaction system and can recognize simple or complex odors.As a newly developed measurement method,electronic nose with many advantages including general purpose,fast analysis,versatile,easy to use,low cost,portable,suitable for automated and on-line monitoring has been used widely in the areas of food industry,environmental monitoring,public safety and medical diagnostics.With the growing demand for on-line and continuous monitoring of environmental applications,electronic nose also shows its potential in environmental monitoring.Based on brief introduction of the concept,principles and history of electronic nose,application and progress of electronic nose in environmental monitoring were reviewed.Conclusion is drawn that electronic nose is suitable in large sample scale screening,emergent pollution alarm and pollution sources monitoring.
