Abstract:Analysis of the complex relationships between plants and insects is important for biological research in our country.Although Chinese scholars tended to publish relevant literature in foreign journals, domestic journals were still the main targets for scientific research publications in this field. Studies on plant-insect relationships in domestic journals have increased rapidly, but a systematic review of relevant literature was still absent. In our study, we used the CiteSpace software to visually analyze the publication amount, journal distribution, and keywords of the relevant literature included in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) between 1953 and 2020, to clarify and summarize the development, hotspots and deficiencies of studies on the relationships between plants and insects in domestic journals, and to promote professional publications in domestic journals. The study results showed that(1) The annual total number of papers in this field published in domestic journals showed an overall upward trend, which had undergone four stages: the initial stage, the growth stage, the decline stage, and the recovery stage.(2)Insect ecology and integrated pest control were the main research directions in domestic journals, mainly published in entomology journals.(3) Research on the relationships between plants and insects has gradually diversified, but “host plants”, “phytophagous insects” and “pollinating insects” have remained the main research topics. Research on these topics laid a foundation for the development of this field. Accordingly, the following three research topics became the hotspots in recent years: the effects of secondary plant metabolites on herbivorous insects feeding behavior, the relationships between plant breeding system and the behavioral traits of flower-visiting insects, and the physiological and biochemical reactions of the tissue structure during the interaction between plants and insects.(4) There were a few innovative and breakthrough research hotspots in recent years. Genetic engineering and ecological control have become critical and iconic research directions. The body of research on plant volatiles,nutrients, protective enzymes, or insect visiting behaviors is still thin in domestic journals and requires future efforts. The present study quantitatively and objectively investigated the status and hotspots of publications on the relationships between plants and insects included in the CNKI database from 1953 to 2020 in order to promote in-depth studies in this area and provide references for future research.
