Abstract:In aquatic ecosystems,polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) partition preferentially to distribute in sediment owing to their high hydrophobicity.Ecological risk assessment on 6 selected PAHs from sediment in Taihu Lake was performed using species sensitivity distributions(SSDs).For dose-response assessment,the threshold predicted no-effect concentration for sediment(PNECsed) for each PAH was derived using the formulas given by the European "Technical Guidance Document on Risk Assessment"(TGD) from HC5(hazardous concentration protective of 95% of species),which was predicted from the SSDs method based on the chronic toxic data.For exposure assessment,the predicted environmental concentration of each PAH in sediment(PECsed) was collected from former reports of PAH distribution in Taihu Lake.For risk characterization,the PECsed/PNECsed ratio was used to characterize the quantitative risk.The value of HC5 of benzo\a\]pyrene,pyrene,fluoranthene,anthracene,fluorene,and naphthalene is 1.026 μg·L-1,4.553 μg·L-1,1.940 μg·L-1,0.930 μg·L-1,11.045 μg·L-1,and 2.936 μg·L-1,respectively.Among the 6 PAHs,naphthalene,anthracene,fluorene,fluoranthene are likely to pose ecological risk to the environment with the risk sequence as following:naphthalene>fluoranthene>anthracene>fluorene.The results prove that the ecological risk of the 6 PAHs in 2009 is lower than that in 2004 and 2007.This research provides scientific information and approaches for obtaining ecological standard for water quality of PAHs in sediment of Taihu Lake.
