The prokaryotic green alga Prochloron sp. (Prochlorophyta) is found in symbiotic association with colonial didemnid ascidians that inhabit warm tropical waters in a broad range of light environments. We sought to determine the light-adaptation features of this alga in relation to the natural light environments in which the symbioses are found, and to characterize the temperature sensitivity of photosynthesis and respiration of Prochloron sp. in order to assess its physiological role in the productivity and distribution of the symbiosis. Colonies of the host ascidian Lissoclinum patella were collected from exposed and shaded habitats in a shallow lagoon in Palau, West Caroline Islands, during February and March, 1983. Some colonies from the two light habitats were maintained under conditions of high light (2 200 E m–2 s–1) and low light (400 E m–2 s–1) in running seawater tanks. The environments were characterized in terms of daily light quantum fluxes, daily periods of light-saturated photosynthesis (Hsat), and photon flux density levels. Prochloron sp. cells were isolated from the hosts and examined for their photosynthesis vs irradiance relationships, respiration, pigment content and photosynthetic unit features. In addition, daily P:R ratios, photosynthetic quotients, carbon balances and photosynthetic carbon release were also characterized. It was found that Prochloron sp. cells from low-light colonies possessed lower chlorophyll a/b ratios, larger photosynthetic units sizes based on both reaction I and reaction II, similar numbers of reaction center I and reaction center II per cell, lower respiration levels, and lower Pmax values than cells from high-light colonies. Cells isolated from low-light colonies showed photoinhibition of Pmax at photon flux densities above 800 E m–2 s–1. However, because the host tissue attenuates about 60 to 80% of the incident irradiance, it is unlikely that these cells are normally photoinhibited in hospite. Collectively, the light-adaptation features of Prochloron sp. were more similar to those of eukaryotic algae and vascular plant chloroplasts than to those of cyanobacteria, and the responses were more sensitive to the daily flux of photosynthetic quantum than to photon flux density per se. Calculation of daily minimum carbon balances indicated that, though high-light cells had daily P:R ratios of 1.0 compared to 4.6 for low-light cells, the cells from the two different light environments showed nearly identical daily carbon gains. Cells isolated from high-light colonies released between 15 and 20% of their photosynthetically-fixed carbon, levels sufficient to be important in the nutrition of the host. Q10 responses of photosynthesis and respiration in Prochloron sp. cells exposed briefly (15–45 min) to temperatures between 15° and 45°C revealed a discontinuity in the photosynthetic response at the ambient growth temperatures. The photosynthetic rates were found to be more than twice as sensitive to temperatures below ambient (Q10=3.47) than to temperatures above ambient (Q10=1.47). The Q10 for respiration was constant (Q10=1.66) over the temperature range examined. It appears that the photosynthetic temperature sensitivity of Prochloron sp. may restrict its distribution to warmer tropical waters. The ecological implications of these findings are discussed in relation to published data on other symbiotic systems and free-living algae.  相似文献

Inorganic nitrogen metabolism inUlva rigida illuminated with blue light   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Inorganic nitrogen metabolism in blue light was studied for the green algaUlva rigida C. Agardh collected in the south of Spain (Punta Carnero, Algeciras) in the winter of 1987. NH4 + has been reported to inhibit NO3 - uptake; however,U. rigida showed a net NO3 - uptake even when the NH4 + concentration of the external medium was three or four times greater than the concentration of NO3 -. NO3 - uptake rates were similar in both darkness and in blue light of various photon fluence rates (PFR) ranging from 17 to 160 mol m-2 s-1. Since NO3 - uptake is an active mechanism involving the consumption of ATP, respiratory metabolism can provide enough ATP to maintain the energetic requirement of NO3 - transport even in darkness. In contrast, NO3 - reduction inU. rigida was highly dependent on the net photosynthetic rate. After 7 h in blue light, intracellular NO3 - concentrations ([NO3 -] i ) were higher in specimens exposed to intensities below the light compensation point (LCP) than in those incubated at a PFR above the LCP. When PFR is below the light compensation point, NO3 - reduction is low, probably because all the NADH produced by the cells is oxidized in the respiratory chain in order to produce ATP to maintain a steady NO3 - transport rate. The total nitrogen (TN) and carbon (TC) contents decreased from darkness to 33 mol m-2 s-1 in blue light. In this range, catabolic processes prevailed over anabolic ones. In contrast, increases in TN and TC contents were observed above the light compensation point. The C : N ratio increased with light intensity, reaching a stable value of 17 at 78 mol m-2 s-1 in blue light. Intracellular NO3 - concentration and NO3 - reduction appear to be directly controlled by light intensity. This external control of [NO3 -]i and the small capacity ofU. rigida to retain incorporated NO3 -, NO2 - and NH4 + ions may explain its nitrophilic character.  相似文献

Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics were observed at all light intensities. With constant illumination, the Vmax and K1 in nitrate uptake over the natural light intensity range of 0 to 2000 E were 0.343 g-at NO3–N(g)-1 at protein-N h-1 and 26 E, respectively. Nitrate uptake was inhibited at higher light intensities. The Ks for nitrate uptake did not vary as a function of light intensity remaining relatively constant at 0.62 g-at NO3–N 1-1. With intermittent illumination, the Vmzx for light intensity in nitrate uptake over a light intensity range of 0 to 5000 E was 0.341 g-at NO3–N(g)-1-at protein-N h-1. No inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed at higher than natural light intensities. Chaetoceros curvisetus will probably never experience light inhibition of nitrate uptake under natural conditions.  相似文献

Photosynthetic performance in the kelp Laminaria solidungula J. Agardh was examined from photosynthesis irradiance (P-I) parameters calculated from in situ 14C uptake experiments, using whole plants in the Stefansson Sound Boulder Patch, Alaskan Beaufort Sea, in August 1986. Rates of carbon fixation were determined from meristematic, basal blade, and second blade tissue in young and adult sporophytes. Differences in saturating irradiance (I k, measured as photosynthetically active radiation, PAR), photosynthetic capacity (P max), and relative quantum efficiency () were observed both between young and adult plants and between different tissue types. I k was lowest in meristematic tissue (20 to 30 E m–2 s–1) for both young and adult plants, but consistently 8 to 10 E m–2 s–1 higher in young plants compared to adults in all three tissues. Average I k for non-meristematic tissue in adult plants was 38 E m–2 s–1. Under saturating irradiances, young and adult plants exhibited similar rates of carbon fixation on an area basis, but under light limitation, fixation rates were highest in adult plants for all tissues. P max was generally highest in the basal blade and lowest in meristematic tissue. Photosynthetic efficiency () ranged between 0.016 and 0.027 mol C cm–2 h–1/E m–2 s–1, and was highest in meristematic tissue. The relatively lower I k and higher exhibited by L. solidungula in comparison to other kelp species are distinct adaptations to the near absence of light during the eight-month ice-covered period and in summer when water turbidity is high. Continuous measurement of in situ quantum irradiance made in summer showed that maximum PAR can be less than 12 E m–2 s–1 for several days when high wind velocities increase water turbulence and decrease water transparency. The Univeristy of Texas Marine Science Institute Contribution No. 695  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration in Ahnfeltia plicata (Huds.) Fries (Gigartinales) was measured in a seawater flowthrough system at different temperatures, salinities and photon flux densities (PFD). The exchanges of dissolved oxygen and inorganic carbon were continuously recorded with an oxygen probe and a pH electrode measuring variation in CO2–HCO 3 - equilibrium as pH changes. Highest apparent photosynthesis at moderate photon flux density (PFD 50 E m-2 s-1) was found at 15°C and 33 S. Photosynthesis was measured up to PFD 500 E m-2 s-1 and no light saturation was documented. In the present experimental set-up, with continuous supply of fresh seawater, the number of limiting factors during photosynthesis measurements is reduced.  相似文献

In a series of multifactorial laboratory experiments, Ulva lactuca discs were grown in an apparatus in which they were exposed simultaneously to 3 simulated current speeds (7.5, 15, 22.5 cm s-1) and a still control, and either 3 ammonium concentrations (0–10, 35–45 and 115–145 M) under ample uniform light (ca 200 E m-2 s-1) or 3 light intensities (approximately 35, 90 and 270 E m-2 s-1) with uniform surplus, ammonium. Disc growth rates were determined in each experiment as well as tissue nitrogen and carbon composition and fluxes of NH4, NO3/NO2 and PO4 in media. In a supplementary series of field experiments, U. lactuca discs were simultaneously exposed to 2 different water motion regimes in adjacent chambers at several sites characterized by widely different ammonium concentrations. In field experiments, growth rates were calculated and analyzed as a function of water motion at the various sites. The application of simulated current consistently enhanced disc growth rates in the laboratory, except at the lowest light intensity. In most cases this enhancement was fully realized at the lowest applied simulated current (7.5 cm s-1). Simulated current slightly enhanced ammonium uptake rates by U. lactuca discs, relative to rates in still water, except at the highest ammonium concentration. C:N ratios of discs generally declined with increases in simulated current, except at the highest ammonium concentration. This decline was primarily attributable to increases in per cent N and was, again, mainly realized at 7.5 cm s-1. The results suggested that simulated current compensated for N limitation, except when light was sufficiently low to become the overriding limiting factor, but that the enhancement of growth by simulated current could not be explained in terms of N metabolism alone. Field experiments showed that the higher level of water motion consistently enhanced growth at sites with comparatively low ammonium concentrations, but not at sites with moderate or high ammonium concentrations.  相似文献

The photosynthesis–irradiance response of Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a common kelp in the temperate southern hemisphere, was investigated in situ throughout the year and across a depth profile at West Island, South Australia. Temperature and irradiance environment altered throughout the year, varying at 3 m between 14–20°C and 279–705 mol photons m–2 s–1. Photosynthetic capacity (Pm) varied throughout the year between 177–278 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 3 m and 133–348 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 10 m. The irradiance required for sub-saturation of photosynthesis (Ek) varied between 97–152 and 81–142 mol photons m–2 s–1 for 3 m and 10 m respectively, and the respiration rate varied between 15–36 and 13–20 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 for 3 m and 10 m. A clear seasonal change in photokinetic parameters was detected and provided strong evidence for a seasonal acclimation response. During winter an increase in the efficiency of light utilisation at low irradiance () was accompanied by a decrease in both Ek and that required for photosynthetic compensation. Pm also increased during the winter and autumn months and respiratory requirements decreased. These changes enable E. radiata to display an optimal photosynthetic performance throughout the year despite significant changes in the surrounding environment.Communicated by P.W. The effect of light intensity on rate of photosynthesis was measured at irregular intervals over a 12-month period for 22 benthic marine algae in the western Baltic Sea. In most species photosynthesis (mg O2·g dry weight-1·h-1) was highest in spring and summer, corresponding to the seasonal growth pattern of the algae. In winter all the species showed adaptation of the light compensation point. Highest productivity was shown by algae which are: short-lived annual species rather than perennials, eulittoral rather than sublittoral, and which possess sheet-like or filamentous thalli rather than coarsely branched forms. These factors are clearly inter-related.This research was carried out while one of us (R.J.K.) was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Kiel, and is part of the programme Sonderforschungsbereich 95, Wechselwirkung Meer-Meeresboden, Universität Kiel.  相似文献

In this study two sites were selected in order to investigate groundwater contamination and spatial relationships among groundwater quality, topography, geology, landuse and pollution sources. One site is the Asan area, an agricultural district where pollution sources are scattered and which is mainly underlain by granite of Cretaceous age. The other site is the Gurogu area of Seoul city, an industrial district where an industrial complex and residential areas are located and which is mainly underlain by gneiss of Precambrian age. Groundwater samples collected from these districts were analysed for chemical constituents. An attribute value files of chemical constituents of groundwater and the spatial data layers were constructed and pollution properties were investigated to establish out spatial relationships between the groundwater constituents and pollution sources using geographic information systems (GIS).Relatively high contents of Si and HCO3 in the groundwater from the Asan area reflect the effect of water–rock interaction whereas high contents of Cl, NO3 and Ca2+ in the groundwater from the Gurogu area are due to the pollution of various sources. The significant seasonal variation of SiO2, HCO2 and Ca2+ contents, and that of Ca2+ content were observed in the Asan and the Gurogu areas, respectively. Seasonal variation of pollutants such as Cl, NO3 and SO4 2– was not observed in either area. Pollution over the critical level of the Korean drinking water standard has been investigated from 15 sampling sites out of 40 in the Asan area, and 33 sampling sites out of 51 in the Gurogu area. Pollution by NO3 , Cl, Fe2+, Mn2+, SO4 2– and Zn2+ in the groundwater from the industrial district (Gurogu area) and that of NO3 , SO4 2– and Zn2+ in the groundwater from the agricultural district (Asan area) were observed. The principal pollutant in both areas is NO3 . Deep groundwater from the Asan area is not yet contaminated with NO3 except for one site, but most of the shallow groundwater site occurring near the potential point sources is seriously contaminated. From the result of buffering analysis, it seems clear that factories and stock farms are the principal pollution sources in the Asan area. The groundwater from the Gurogu area has already been seriously polluted considering the fact of NO3 contamination of deep groundwater. Chlorine pollution of shallow groundwater in the Gurogu area was also observed. Spatial relationship between pollution level and its source was clarified in this study by using GIS, which will be applicable to the effective management of groundwater quality.  相似文献

Release of14C-labelled carbon dioxide from uniformly labelled cells was used to measure respiration by individual ciliates in 2-h incubations in 1989 and 1990. In a strictly heterotrophic ciliate,Strobilidium spiralis (Leegaard, 1915), release of labelled carbon dioxide was equivalent to ca. 2.8% of cell C h–1 at 20°C, and there was no difference between rates in the dark and light. In the chloroplast-retaining ciliatesLaboea strobila Lohmann, 1908,Strombidium conicum (Lohmann, 1908) Wulff, 1919 andStrombidium capitatum (Leegaard, 1915) Kahl, 1932, release of labelled carbon dioxide was less in the light than in the dark in experiments done at 15°C. InL. strobila release of radiolabel as carbon dioxide was equivalent to ca. 2.4% of cell C h–1 in the dark but ca. 1% at 50µE m–2 s–1, an irradiance limiting to photosynthesis. InS. conicum release of radiolabel as carbon dioxide was equivalent to ca. 4.4% of cell C h–1 in the dark, but at an irradiance saturating to photosynthesis (250 to 300µE m–2 s–1) there was no detectable release of labelled carbon dioxide. InS. capitatum release of radiolabel as carbon dioxide was equivalent to ca. 4.3% of cell C h–1 in the dark but at an irradiance saturating to photosynthesis was ca. 2.4% of cell C h–1. These data, combined with data from photosynthetic uptake experiments, indicate that14C uptake underestimates the total benefit of photosynthesis by 50% or more in chloroplastretaining ciliates.Contribution no. 7510 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

In a series of multifactorial laboratory experiments, Gracilaria tikvahiae apical segments were grown in an apparatus in which they were exposed simultaneously to 3 simulated current speeds (7.5, 15, 22.5 cm s-1) and a still control, and either 3 ammonium concentrations (<6, 37–39, and 119–136 M) under ample uniform light (ca 200 E m-2 s-1) or 3 light intensities (ca 35, 90, and 270 E m-2 s-1) with uniform surplus ammonium. Growth rates of apical segments were determined in each experiment as well as nitrogen and carbon composition of tissues and fluxes of NH4, NO3/NO2, and PO4 in media. In a supplementary series of field experiments, apical segments of G. tikvahiae weresimultaneously exposed to 2 different regimes of water motion in adjacent chambers at several sites characterized by widely different ammonium regimes. The application of simulated current significantly enhanced growth rates in all experiments which utilized recently collected plants. Generally, this enhancement was fully realized at 7.5 cm s-1, with growth rates tending to plateau above that speed. Growth enhancement by simulated current was independent of ammonium concentration and was considerably reduced at the lowest light intensity. In experiments conducted with plants that had been maintained for several months in aquaria, simulated current failed to enhance growth rates. This suggested that growth responses were at least partly a function of prior conditioning. Growth rates were a direct function of light intensity and an inverse function of ammonium concentration, indicating ammonium inhibition at the higher applied concentrations. Simulated current slightly enhanced rates of ammonium uptake but this did not consistently result in reduced C:N ratios, suggesting that the growth-stimulating effect of relative water motion was attributable to factors other than N uptake. There was evidence of luxury consumption of ammonium. In field experiments, growth rates were not significantly related to exposure to water motion.  相似文献

Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss exposed to nutrient enriched media (0.1 mM PO4; 1.0 mM NH 4 + ) by pulse feeding 2 h every third day for a period of 5 wk at 20°C and 25–30 salinity showed significantly higher rates of photosynthesis regardless of photon flux density correlated with increased pigment levels. Algae in nonenriched media showed significantly higher levels of soluble carbohydrates and decreased levels of phycoerythrin and chlorophyll a. Photosynthetic and respiratory responses to temperature 15°, 25°, 30°C and salinity (15, 25, 30 S) combinations indicate broad tolerances by both nutrient enriched and non-nutrient enriched algae. Photosynthetic and respiratory rates were highest at the high temperatures. Pulse-fed algae had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than non-nutrient enriched plants at all temperature and salinity combinations. Non-nutrient enriched algae had significantly higher respiratory rates than nutrient enriched algae at only 30°C and 15. The respiratory rates of both nutrient enriched and non-nutrient algae decreased under combinations of higher temperatures and salinities. G. verrucosa, grown without nutrients, has lower tolerances to environmental stresses.  相似文献

Scyphopolyps and scyphomedusae of Cassiopea andromeda Forskål (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) containing dinoflagellate endosymbionts (zooxanthellae) were investigated for rates and pathways of carbon fixation. Photosynthesis by the algae, accounting for 80 and 15 mol C h-1 on a dry weight basis in medusae and polyps, respectively, by far exceeds dark incorporation of inorganic carbon by the intact association. Photosynthetic carbon fixation is operated via C3 pathway of carbon reduction. DCMU-treatment (1×10-6 M and 1×10-5 M) completely inhibits light-dependent carbon assimilation. Major photosynthates presumably involved in a metabolite flow from algal symbionts to animal tissue are glycerol and glucose. A total of 5–10% net algal photosynthate appears to be seleased in vivo to the host. This is probably less than the energy supply ultimately required for the nutrition of the polyps and medusae. The presence of zooxanthellae proved to be indispensable for strobilation in the scyphopolyps. However, photosynthesis by algal symbionts as well as photosynthate release is obviously not essential for the initiation of ephyrae as is shown by DCMU-treatment, culture in continous darkness, and aposymbiotic controls. It is therefore concluded that strobilation is supported, but not triggered by algal photosynthetic activity. The induction of strobilation thus seems to depend on a more complex system of regulation.  相似文献

Here we evidenced the photo-induced degradation of monolinuron, a phenylurea herbicide, through the 300–450 nm light excitation of nitrite and nitrate species. The degradation pathways were compared to those obtained under direct photolysis at 254 nm. When using NO3 and NO2 as photoinducers, hydroxyphenyl-substituted photodegradation products were found to be formed specifically through the involvement of OH° radicals. NO and NO2-phenyl substituted compounds were also observed as a result of the production of NO° and NO2° radicals. Half-lives of monolinuron in aqueous solutions were measured in various conditions of concentrations of substrate and inducer, oxygen content and pH.  相似文献

The chemistry of aluminum in the environment   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
There is increased concern over the effects of elevated concentrations of Al in the environment. Unfortunately, studies of the environmental chemistry and toxicity of Al have been limited by our understanding of the processes regulating the aqueous concentration, speciation and bioavailability of this element.Although Al is the most abundant metallic element in the Earth's crust, it is highly insoluble and generally unavailable to participate in biogeochemical reactions. However, under highly acidic or alkaline conditions, or in the presence of complexing ligands, elevated concentrations may be mobilized to the aquatic environment. Ecologically significant concentrations of Al have been reported in surface waters draining acid-sensitive regions that are receiving elevated inputs of acidic deposition. Acid- sensitive watersheds are characterized by limited release of basic cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) and/or retention of strong acid anions (SO4 2–, NO3 , Cl). Under these conditions inputs of strong acids are not completely neutralized, but rather acidic water is exported from the terrestrial environment. It has been hypothesized that acidic deposition to acid-sensitive watersheds mobilizes Al within the mineral soil, causing elevated concentrations in soil solutions and surface waters. As a result of mineral phase solubility constraints, concentrations of aqueous Al increase exponentially with decreases in pH below 6.0.Monomeric Al occurs as a series of complexes in the aqueous environment, including aquo, OH, F, SO4 2–, HCO3 and organic species. Of these aquo, OH, F and organic complexes are the most significant in natural waters.Elevated concentrations of Al are ecologically significant because: 1) Al is an important pH buffer in acidic waters, regulating the lower limit of pH values following acidification by strong acids; 2) through adsorption and coagulation reactions, Al may alter the cycling and availability of important elements like phosphorus, organic carbon and certain trace metals; 3) Al may serve as a coagulant facilitating the removal of light attenuating materials, thereby increasing the clarity and decreasing the thermal stability of lakes; and 4) Al is potentially toxic to organisms. Better understanding of the chemistry and speciation of Al is essential to assess these effects.  相似文献

Net photosynthesis at 10mol photons m-2 s-1 in each of 24 wavelengths was measured in absolute units by an O2-electrode and corrected for dark respiration to construct action spectra for gross photosynthesis in nine species of algae, which included plants with thin and thick thalli from each of four major pigment groups. The photosynthesis of green and brown algae with thin thalli decreased in green light, but species with thick thalli from these two groups had action spectra which were almost flat, and matched the optical blackness of the thalli but did not reflect the pigment differences between the species. Among the red algae, on the other hand, there was little difference between the action spectra for thin and thick algae. Only wavelengths absorbed by the phycobilin pigments were effective in photosynthesis, even in species (e.g. Chondrus, Phyllophora) which absorbed all visible wavelengths strongly. Maximal quantum yields of 0.10 to 0.12 O2 molecules per absorbed photon were recorded for thin green and brown algae, but thicker algae in these two groups had lower values. Red algae exhibited maximal values close to 0.10 O2 molecules per absorbed photon, irrespective of thallus thickness or phycocyanin content, but the quantum yields of phycoerythrin-rich species in the 600 to 650 nm waveband were lower than those of phycocyanin-rich species.  相似文献

The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. The pattern of growth (biomass accumulation) in Ecklonia radiata throughout the year and across a depth profile was investigated using the traditional hole-punch method, and the information presented in context with concurrently measured in situ net productivity rates. The rate of net daily productivity showed a lack of consistent seasonal variability, remaining constant throughout the year at two of the four depths measured (3 m and 12 m), and becoming higher during winter at another (5 m). Throughout the year, rates of net daily productivity differed significantly across the depth profile. Net daily productivity rates averaged 0.017 g C g–1 dwt day–1 and 0.005 g C g–1 dwt day–1 at a depth of 3 m (1,394 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) and 10 m (382 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) respectively. In contrast, the biomass accumulation rate of E. radiata was highly seasonal, with low rates of growth occurring in autumn (0.002 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at both 3 and 10 m) and summer (0.007 and 0.004 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and higher rates in spring (0.016 and 0.007 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and winter (0.015 and 0.008 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively). The proportion of assimilated carbon used for biomass accumulation varied throughout the year, between 5% and 41% at 3 m and between 28% and 128% at 10 m. The rates of biomass accumulation at all depths represented only a small proportion of the amount of carbon assimilated annually.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

Carbon acquisition strategies for marine macroalgae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A model system was developed to analyse differences in carbon acquisition strategies among macroalgae. During photosynthesis in a limited volume of seawater the capability of the algae to assimilate inorganic carbon as well as to change the alkalinity of the seawater was analysed. These properties were then related to the status of the carbonate equilibrium system of the seawater. The experimental system was assumed to simulate the conditions in the boundary layer during periods of low water exchange or high intensity irradiations. Fundamental differences were found between different algal classes, suggesting that capabilities to adapt to specific environmental conditions may be connected with dissimilarities in carbon acquisition strategies. In general, green algae were able to reach the highest pH (10.8 at 5°C), and thus to achieve the highest reduction in the level of inorganic carbon via a simple HCO3 /OH ion exchange process. For brown algae, pH increases due to carbon uptake never exceeded pH 9.7 (9.5 in a saltwater scale). In spite of this, members of the Fucaceae (littoral brown algae) were able to extract almost all of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). This was achieved through a gradual decrease in the alkalinity of the enclosed water, so that the carbon assimilation could continue without any concomitant increase in pH. For red algae, the specific response was an increase in the level of inorganic carbon. Thus, for this algal class, no specific strategy for handling a shortage of inorganic carbon was documented. Within each algal class, differences in pH and DIC compensation points could be related to differences in the depths at which the algal species occurred. This paper also introduces a low cost and convenient method of analysing DIC in seawater.  相似文献

In the marine green alga Ulva rigida C. Agardh, nitrate reductase (NR) is synergetically induced by blue light and nitrate. The present study examines the effect of blue light and a large NO 3 pulse (0.3 mM) on relevant variables of NO 3 -assimilation such as NO 3 -uptake, intracellular NO 3 -storage, NR activity, in vivo NO 3 -reduction rate and NO 2 and NH 4 + -accumulation. Nitrate uptake started immediately upon addition of NO 3 , suggesting the presence of a constitutive carrier, however in the first 1.5 to 2 h, periods of net NO 3 efflux were frequent. After this time, NO 3 -uptake and intracellular NO 3 -accumulation proceeded linearly with time, suggesting the existence of a different NO 3 -uptake mechanism, which seems to be inducible. Our results indicate that in vivo NO 3 -reduction is not exclusively dependent on the potential NR activity. In U. rigida, during the first 2 h after a NO 3 pulse (300 M) there were clear indications that the induction state of the NO 3 -carrier limits the reduction rate of NO 3 . Once the induction of the NO 3 -transporter had been completed (1.5 to 2 h), the NO 3 -assimilation pathway reached a steady state, NO 3 -uptake rate, NO 3 -reduction rate and NO 2 and NH 4 + -accumulation being linear with time. Since the reduction of NO 3 leads mainly to the accumulation of NH 4 + , we conclude that, after the NO 3 -reduction itself, NH 4 + -fixation into carbon skeletons is the limiting step in the assimilation of NO 3 by U. rigida under blue light.  相似文献
