This paper investigates some of the reflectivity characteristics that clouds (when modelled as solid bodies) must exhibit to be compatible with observations that the reflecting surface of a cloud (i) appears almost equally bright across its face, (ii) is brightest when the cloud is opposite to the Sun but decreases in brightness as the cloud moves to other positions and (iii) increases in brightness with increasing optical thickness of the cloud in the observer's line of sight. These observations, respectively, are shown to imply that the peak value of the bidirectional total reflectivity from a cloud surface (i) increases in inverse proportion to the cosine of the angle between the Sun and the normal to the cloud surface, as the incident angle increases, (ii) appears to be directed back in the direction of the incident radiation, and (iii) increases as optical thickness of the cloud in the observer's line of sight increases. The results could have application in many fields (e.g. modelling diffuse radiance distributions for cloudy skies).  相似文献

The most common technique used for numerical simulations of tracer mixing is that of the numerical solution of the advection–diffusion equation with the unresolved fluxes parameterized using the similarity theory. Despite correct predictions of the overall directions of transport, models based on a numerical solution of the advection–diffusion equation lack sufficient accuracy to correctly reproduce the coupling of mixing with small scale processes which are sensitive to the microstructure of the tracer distribution. The objective of this paper is to revisit the basic formalism employed in numerical models used to investigate atmospheric tracers. The main mathematical method proposed here is the theory of kinematics of mixing which could be applied effectively for simulations of atmospheric transport processes. At the beginning of the paper, we introduce simple mathematical transformations in order to demonstrate how complex topological structures are created by mixing processes. These idealistic flow systems are essential to explain transport properties of much more complex three-dimensional geophysical flows. An example of the application of the kinematics of mixing to the analysis of tracer transport on a planetary scale is presented in the following sections. The complex filamentary structures simulated in the numerical experiment are evaluated using some commonly applied statistical measures in order to compare the results with the data published in the literature. The results of the experiment are also analysed with the help of simple conceptual models of fluid filaments. The microstructure of the tracer distribution introduced in the paper is essential to increase our understanding of atmospheric transport and to develop more realistic parameterizations of small-scale mixing. The presented results could also be used to improve calculations of the coupling between microphysical processes and tracer mixing.  相似文献

India has a very extensive coastline of about 7515 km, rich in diverse living resources. These resources continue to deteriorate with rampant harvesting or are altered for other uses such as aquaculture and fisheries. The present paper deals with degrading coastal habitats in northeastern India, and projects the intensity of the stress arising from the collection of tiger prawn seeds (Penaeus monodon) for aquacultural farms and molluskan shells for poultry feed and edible lime. Indiscriminate exploitation of these resources leads to a heavy reduction of the species concerned and other associated marine communities. The magnitude of such destruction has been quantified. The impacts of biodiversity loss and their after-effects on the ecobalance of this coastal system have become a matter of great concern to ecologists to maintain security and sustainability. The authors propose a public awareness program on themes relating to the importance of biodiversity for human livelihoods.  相似文献

The concept of critical loads has been generally accepted throughout Europe, and increasingly in Asian countries and the rest of the world, as providing the data which forms the basis for international negotiations on abatement strategies for emissions of acidifying pollutants. Central to the determination of quantitative critical loads of acidity for forests (and other ecosystems) is the rate at which the minerals in the soil weather or dissolve. Seven methods for determining these rates on a regional basis for the production of critical load maps have been suggested by the official bodies which are responsible for co-ordinating the European critical load mapping efforts. These methods are largely correlations which require a knowledge of the soil parent material and/or the soil mineralogy. The purpose of this paper is to review these weathering rate calculation methods and to assess whether it is currently possible to calculate numerically accurate critical loads for the production of regional critical load maps. A consideration of the data used to generate these methods and comparisons of the weathering rates calculated using various methods leads to the conclusion that at present it is not. Further work is needed to develop and maintain the initial credibility of critical loads both scientifically and as an aid to policy decisions.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of sulfonylurea herbicides bensulfuron-methyl and cinosulfuron was tested on the five species of freshwater phytoplankton: Scenedesmus acutus, Scenedesmus subspicatus, Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella saccharophila. Herbicide concentrations eliciting a 50% growth reduction over 96 h (EC50) ranged from 8 to 104 mg/l for cinosulfuron and from 0.015 to 6.2 mg/l for bensulfuron-methyl. The pesticides bensulfuron-methyl, atrazine and benthiocarb were more toxic than cinosulfuron, chlorsulfuron, molinate, fenitrothion and pyridaphenthion in a toxicity study with the same algal species. The transformation of effective concentrations of bensulfuron-methyl and cinosulfuron and other pesticides, obtained from toxicity measurements, into percent of the saturation level in water is used as a first evaluation of potential hazard to aquatic systems. The herbicides cinosulfuron, methyl-bensulfuron, atrazine and chlorsulfuron were more dangerous than the herbicides benthiocarb and molinate and than the insecticides fenitrothion and pyridaphenthion, in a study of hazard evaluation. The two species of Chlorella were more tolerant to both herbicides than the two species of Scenedesmus. A potential environmental hazard of sulfonylurea herbicides to aquatic systems has to be expected even at low environmental concentrations.  相似文献

This paper examines the use of order statistics to provide distribution-free point and confidence interval estimates of quantiles of the distribution of contaminants in environmental media. These procedures are straightforward to implement and are often unaffected by the presence of observations below the detection limit. This approach to the estimation of quantiles has been implemented in the determination of the Ontario typical range of chemical parameters in soil, vegetation, moss bags and snow. These distributions range from symmetric to highly skewed to the right, with zero to 100% of observations below the detection limit.  相似文献

A number of mechanisms have been identified that can lead to (acute) aquatic toxicity. The assignment of compounds to a particular mechanism of action is important in the development and utilisation of (quantitative) structure-activity relationships ((Q)SARs) for ecotoxicity. Assignment to a mechanism can be difficult; however in 1992 Verhaar et al. published a series of structural rules which aimed to classify compounds according to mechanism of action. Recent interest has seen the Verhaar rules coded into freely available software such as Toxtree available from the European Chemicals Bureau. To date, a complete critical evaluation of these rules has been lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the Toxtree implementation of the Verhaar rules using two well characterised aquatic toxicity datasets (Pimephales promelas and Tetrahymena pyriformis phenol databases) for which mechanisms of toxic action are well established. The present study highlights rule, and possible coding, errors that may lead to misclassifications. Improvements to both the rules and prediction architecture are suggested. In particular further rules to improve predictions for polar narcosis (class 2) are suggested.  相似文献

Mercury contamination in Canada's Bay of Fundy is a priority concern because of elevated levels observed in fish, birds and wildlife. Salt marshes constitute an important part of the Bay's coastline and are potential stores of mercury for the region. We measured the amount of mercury accumulated over a 5-yr period from 1997 to 2002 in surface sediments of seven salt marshes along the New Brunswick coast of the Bay. The seven study sites extended from outer to inner Bay, spanning a gradient in tidal range (6-12 m) and sediment characteristics such as %LOI (4-29%) and sediment deposition rate (0.27-1.76 cm yr(-1)). In each study site, mercury was measured in low and high marsh areas. Sediment mercury concentrations ranged from 7 to 79 ng g(-1) and loading rates ranged from 0.1 to 1.1 mg m(-2). Total estimated 5-yr storage of mercury in salt marsh sediments of the Bay is 854+/-465 kg. We also compared sediment mercury loading to atmospheric inputs measured at a deposition monitoring station operating in New Brunswick from 1997 to 2002 and found that direct atmospheric deposition appears to be a minor input of mercury to these sediments. We are unaware of documentation of mercury loading in salt marshes on a bay-wide scale and over a constrained (5-yr) time period elsewhere.  相似文献

The present review describes some aspects of organization of biodegradative pathways of Nocardioform microorganisms, first of all, with respect to their ability to degrade aromatic compounds, mostly methylbenzoate, chlorosubstituted phenols, and chlorinated biphenyls and the intermediates of their transformation: 4-chlorobenzoate and para-hydroxybenzoate. Various enzyme systems induced during degradation processes are defined. The ability of microorganisms to induce a few key enzymes under the influence of xenobiotics is described. This ability may increase the biodegradative potential of strains allowing them to survive in the changing environment or demonstrate to some extent the unspecific response of microorganisms to the effect of toxicants. Nocardioform microorganisms responsible for degradation of such persistent compounds as polychlorinated biphenyls, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated benzoates and phenols and other xenobiotics are characterized. The possibility of using Nocardioform microorganisms in some aspects of biotechnology due to their ability to produce some compounds important for industry is also estimated.  相似文献

A baseline survey of macroinvertebrate populations in two mine-water treatment wetlands, one treating a net acidic spoil heap discharge and one a net alkaline ferruginous pumped mine water, was undertaken to assess the potential of these systems to provide habitats for faunal communities. Both wetlands were found to be impoverished in comparison to natural wetlands but did sustain a macroinvertebrate community that could support higher organisms. Wetland size and water quality in terms of pH, conductivity and metal concentrations were found to be important factors in determining the quality of the populations supported. Direct toxicity to organisms was unlikely to be the main cause of lower diversity, but the smothering of organisms via the precipitation of iron hydroxides particularly in the early parts of the treatment systems affected macroinvertebrate communities. The presence of areas of open water within the planted systems was found to be important for providing habitats for macroinvertebrates and this should be both a future design and maintenance consideration for environmental managers.  相似文献

Yearling carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to d-phenothrin (a 1:4 mixture of d-cis and d-trans isomers) in the absence and the presence of piperonyl butoxide under the flow-through test condition and the bioconcentration factors (BCF's) of the geometric isomers were separately evaluated. It was demonstrated that BCF values for the d-cis isomer were significantly higher by 1.1 to 2.2-fold than those for the d-trans isomer and the subsequent exposure in the presence of piperonyl butoxide resulted in elevated BCF values for the d-cis isomer, but no remarkable change in BCF's was observed for the d-trans isomer. The elevation observed here was presumably attributable to a reduced elimination caused by inhibited oxidative reactions characteristic to the d-cis isomer. The contribution of biotransformation to the elimination rate constant (K3/K2 was estimated to be 2.3–11. Thus, the result was well explained by a distinct oxidative metabolism of the d-cis isomer and a significance of metabolism in bioconcentration phenomenon was exemplified.  相似文献

The extent of disaggregation of humic acid particles in water was measured as a function of time, initial concentration, pH of the suspension and the temperature. In all experiments the amount of humic acid particles disaggregated was characterized by the corresponding fraction of the suspension, which was able to pass a 0.01 μm membrane filter.It was found that the amount disaggregated after 1000 hours was proportional to the initial concentration of the humic acid particles in the aqueous suspension and increased considerably with the temperature. Decreasing the pH of the suspension from about 6 to zero caused the extent of disaggregation also to decrease continuously.The kinetic measurements revealed that about 3% of the humic acid are disaggregated within 25 hours, 4% within 200 hours and 5% within 1500 hours at a pH around 4. The rates of disaggregation were found to be proportional to the initial concentration of the particles and increased considerably with the temperature.  相似文献

Ozonation of alpha endosulfan and the effects of some parameters such as pH, temperature and partial pressure on ozonation were investigated and the kinetic constants were calculated in this study. Alpha endosulfan solutions were ozonated in a lab-scale semi-batch reactor under variable experimental conditions. Increase in dissolved ozone concentration had a positive effect on oxidation rate. Alpha endosulfan could be removed up to 94% at pH 4 for an ozonation time of 60 minutes. The oxidation reaction was found to be of second order and of first order with respect to both ozone and alpha endosulfan. The temperature dependent reaction expression of alpha endosulfan was obtained as kd = (1.889 exp(- 2.21 x 10(-3)/T). It was concluded that, although the rate of reaction was lower than the rate of other pesticide oxidation reported in the literature. alpha endosulfan presented an obvious reaction to ozonation.  相似文献

In the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto which covers 240 square miles there are over 600,000 automobiles, 350,000 domestic and industrial oil and coal-burning installations, 5000 apartment and industrial incinerators, and other numerous sources of air pollution, many of which create serious problems and contribute to the total air pollution level. The area includes 13 municipalities comprising Metropolitan Toronto and 13 additional surrounding urban and rural localities in an area of 720 square miles. The population of the planning area is 1,965,000 and is expected to increase to 2,800,000 by 1980. The Planning Board showed its recognition of the problem by a statement of policy designed to reduce pollution from fuel-burning equipment and incinerators, to develop a coordinated transportation system, to encourage central heating plants, and to control apartment development in mixed commercial areas. Interactions of micro-contaminants with soil may play a crucial role in their environmental fate and possible harmful effects. Major goals of our investigations were to model the availability of widely used pesticides and characterize adsorption capabilities of distinctive soil types by the accomplishment of extensive comparative studies and application of several extraction methods. Environmental and biological relevance of these examinations is enhanced by the fact that intrinsic features and specific details of pesticide accessibility have not been revealed so far by a comparative approach. Five different experimental methods were assessed for modelling accessibility of five selected pesticides. The applied models for regaining the pesticides showed diverse efficiency in extraction capability in cases of the different soil types (sandy, brown forest and alluvial soils). The amounts of the obtained pesticides were determined by using gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Accessibility of pesticides was also compared in cases of sterilized and real soil samples in order to estimate the extent of the influence of microflora. Aqueous extraction solvents proved to be suitable for accurate assessment of the accessible amounts of pesticides, as their effectivity was at least as high as that of the applied organic solvents. In our studies pesticide-soil interactions have comprehensively been characterized, and possible influences of environmental factors on the accessibility have also been revealed. Our study might be regarded as a tentative approach to model some significant circumstances playing key roles in pesticides' possible bioavailability.  相似文献

以嗜酸氧化亚铁硫杆菌(Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans)为实验菌株,探讨不同条件下碳纳米管(CNTs)对其生长的影响,并采用SEM、EDS和FT-IR等手段分析CNTs对嗜酸氧化亚铁硫杆菌的毒性机制。实验结果表明,CNTs对Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans生长有抑制作用,并随着CNTs剂量的增加,毒性增大。在CNTs投加量为500 mg/L时,培养40 h后菌株的生长量OD420达到最大值0.117,低于空白组的0.163。培养温度和培养基的pH对CNTs的细胞毒性效应有较大影响,在菌体生长的适宜条件下(pH 3.0,温度为30℃),CNTs对菌体的毒性最强。SEM、EDS和FT-IR分析结果显示,CNTs附着在细胞表面,与细胞表面的羟基、氨基等基团相互作用,并可能诱发菌体细胞产生活性氧自由基(ROS),从而导致细胞死亡。  相似文献

Silver in the three species of pinnipeds [northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus), Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), and harbor seal (Phoca vitulina)] caught in the North Pacific Ocean were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, in order to understand accumulation and distribution of silver in pinnipeds. In northern fur seals, relatively high concentrations of silver were observed in the liver and body hair. Some 70% of the silver burden was concentrated in the liver. Hepatic silver concentrations were significantly correlated to age in northern fur seals (r = 0.766, P < 0.001, n = 49) and Steller sea lions (r = 0.496, P < 0.01, n = 28). Levels of silver concentrations per wet weight (microgram g-1) in the three pinnipeds ranged from 0.04 to 0.55 for northern fur seals, from 0.1 to 1.04 for Steller sea lions and from 0.03 to 0.83 for harbor seals. Silver concentrations in liver for all pinnipeds were significantly correlated with mercury, and selenium (P < 0.001). Molar ratios between silver to selenium approximated 1:180 in northern fur seals, 1:120 in Steller sea lions, and 1:60 in harbor seals. The silver-mercury molar ratios were approximately 1:170 in northern fur seals, and 1:80 both in the other species. Increase in silver accumulation in the liver was caused by the retention in nuclei and mitochondria fraction together with mercury and selenium in the cells of northern fur seals.  相似文献

Potentials and drawbacks of chelate-enhanced phytoremediation of soils.   总被引:28,自引:0,他引:28  
Chelate-enhanced phytoremediation has been proposed as an effective tool for the extraction of heavy metals from soils by plants. However, side-effects related to the addition of chelates, e.g. metal leaching and effects on soil micro-organisms, were usually neglected. Therefore, greenhouse and lysimeter studies were conducted to study the phytoremedation potential of EDGA and citric acid and to evaluate its effects on microbial activity and leaching of Cd, Zn Cu and Pb. Grass, lupine and yellow mustard were grown on a moderately polluted acid (pH 4.5) sandy soil that contained 2 mg kg(-1) Cd and 200 mg kg(-1) Zn. Citric acid appeared to be degraded microbially within a few days after addition which limited its potential for long-lasting remediation studies. EDGA enhanced metal solubility but plant uptake did not increase accordingly. The metal shoot:root ratio increased upon addition of EDGA but it also reduced the net shoot and root biomass production of both lupine and yellow mustard. Bacterial biomass was higher in both the citric and EDGA treated pots but bacterial activity remained unaffected. The number of microbivorous nematodes was greatly reduced upon addition of EDGA which was most likely related to the reduced biomass production and, to a smaller extent, to the changes in the composition of the available food. Furthermore, EDGA enhanced metal leaching in the lysimeter study which could lead to groundwater pollution. To prevent these unwanted side-effects, careful management of phytoremediation methods, therefore, seems necessary.  相似文献

The contribution of fenitrothion and its microbial metabolites to the mutagenicity of a fenitrothion-containing solution was investigated during anaerobic biodegradation. Although a mixed culture of bacteria obtained from a paddy field degraded fenitrothion and reduced its concentration from 4.6 to 0.1 mg/l in 6 days, the indirect mutagenicity of the solution in Salmonella strain YG1029 increased. This increase was found to be partially due to amino-fenitrothion generated during the biodegradation. In addition, other unidentified metabolites contributed to the mutagenicity. In contrast, the indirect mutagenicity in strain YG1042, which was initially large because of fenitrothion, then decreased, and increased again. This increase in mutagenicity was also due to amino-fenitrothion and other unidentified metabolites. The mutagenicity in strains YG1029 and YG1042 decreased after day 6. The greatest contribution of amino-fenitrothion to the mutagenicity was calculated to be 73% and 61% in YG1029 and YG1042 on day 3 of incubation, respectively. That of unidentified metabolites was calculated at 49% and 61% on day 20, respectively. Therefore, because not all the toxic metabolites of a compound can be identified, it is important to evaluate the toxicity of a whole solution in a bioassay such as the Ames assay rather than deducing the toxicity of the solution from the combined toxicities of known metabolites.  相似文献

The rational for the study was to review the literature on the toxicity and corresponding mechanisms associated with lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As), individually and as mixtures, in the environment. Heavy metals are ubiquitous and generally persist in the environment, enabling them to biomagnify in the food chain. Living systems most often interact with a cocktail of heavy metals in the environment. Heavy metal exposure to biological systems may lead to oxidation stress which may induce DNA damage, protein modification, lipid peroxidation, and others. In this review, the major mechanism associated with toxicities of individual metals was the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, toxicities were expressed through depletion of glutathione and bonding to sulfhydryl groups of proteins. Interestingly, a metal like Pb becomes toxic to organisms through the depletion of antioxidants while Cd indirectly generates ROS by its ability to replace iron and copper. ROS generated through exposure to arsenic were associated with many modes of action, and heavy metal mixtures were found to have varied effects on organisms. Many models based on concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) have been introduced to help predict toxicities and mechanisms associated with metal mixtures. An integrated model which combines CA and IA was further proposed for evaluating toxicities of non-interactive mixtures. In cases where there are molecular interactions, the toxicogenomic approach was used to predict toxicities. The high-throughput toxicogenomics combines studies in genetics, genome-scale expression, cell and tissue expression, metabolite profiling, and bioinformatics.  相似文献
