In a previous study on the kuruma shrimp Penaeus japonicus from the South China Sea, we detected high genetic divergence between two morphologically similar varieties (I and II) with
distinct color banding patterns on the carapace, indicating the occurrence of cryptic species. In the present study, we clarify
the geographical distribution of the two varieties in the western Pacific by investigating the genetic differentiation of
the shrimp from ten localities. Two Mediterranean populations are also included for comparison. Based on the mitochondrial
DNA sequence data, the shrimps are separated into two distinct clades representing the two varieties. Variety I comprises
populations from Japan and China (including Taiwan), while variety II consists of populations from Southeast Asia (Vietnam,
Singapore and the Philippines), Australia and the Mediterranean. Population differentiation is evident in variety II, as supported
by restriction profiles of two mitochondrial markers and analysis of two microsatellite loci. The Australian population is
genetically diverged from the others, whereas the Southeast Asian and Mediterranean populations show a close genetic relationship.
Variety I does not occur in these three localities, while a small proportion of variety II is found along the northern coast
of the South China Sea and Taiwan, which constitute the sympatric zone of the two varieties. The present study reveals high
genetic diversity of P. japonicus. Further studies on the genetic structure of this species complex, particularly the populations in the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean,
are needed not only to understand the evolutionary history of the shrimp, but also to improve the knowledge-based fishery
management and aquaculture development programs of this important biological resource. 相似文献

Evolutionary diversification of the broadly distributed copepod sibling species complex Eurytemora affinis has been documented in the northern hemisphere. However, the fine scale geographic distribution, levels of genetic subdivision,
evolutionary, and demographic histories of European populations have been less explored. To gain information on genetic subdivision
and to evaluate heterogeneity among European populations, we analyzed samples from 8 locations from 58° to 45°N and 0° to
23°E, using 549 base pairs of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. We discovered three distinct lineages
of E. affinis in Western Europe, namely the East Atlantic lineage, the North Sea/English Channel (NSEC) lineage, and the Baltic lineage.
These geographically separated lineages showed sequences divergence of 1.7–2.1%, dating back 1.9 million years (CI: 0.9–3.0
My) with no indication of isolation by distance. Genetic divergence in Europe was much lower than among North American lineages.
Interestingly, genetic structure varied distinctively among the three lineages: the East Atlantic lineage was divided between
the Gironde and the Loire populations, the NSEC lineage comprised one single population unit spanning the Seine, Scheldt and
Elbe rivers and the third lineage was restricted to the Baltic Proper (Sweden). We revealed high haplotype diversity in the
East Atlantic and the Baltic lineages, whereas in the NSEC lineage haplotype diversity was comparatively low. All three lineages
showed signs of at least one demographic expansion event during Pleistocene glaciations that marked their genetic structure.
These results provide a preliminary overview of the genetic structure of E. affinis in Europe. 相似文献

Tetraclita japonica and T. formosana are common intertidal barnacles with similar morphology, which leads to uncertainty in their species status. In the present
study, we try to elucidate the taxonomic status of the two taxa using morphology and mitochondrial control region and cytochrome
c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of the barnacles in their distribution range. The two taxa were found to be morphologically
similar; a diagnostic difference between them was only observed in the colour of the parietes and opercular plates. Little
genetic differentiation was detected in the control region and COI (ΦCT < 0.025 for both markers) between two taxa, but differentiation was found between the southern (Taiwan and Hong Kong) and
northern (Japan) populations of T. japonica/T. formosana, which might be the result of isolation by distance and upwelling in summer. Our data suggest that the two presently recognized
species probably represent two colour morphotypes of the same species exhibiting different geographical distribution. T. japonica is abundant in Japan and southeast coast of China, whereas T. formosana is only abundant in Taiwan. The heterogeneous environment might exert a divergent selection pressure leading to asymmetric
distribution of the two colour morphotypes. The different colours might be a result of either phenotypic plasticity adaptive
to environmental variables or genetic hitchhiking of local adaptive genotypes.

Morphology, elemental content and isotopic composition of leaves of the seagrasses Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa were highly variable across the Illes Balears, a Spanish archipelago in the western Mediterranean, and varied seasonally
at one site in the study area. The data presented in this paper generally expand the reported ranges of nitrogen, phosphorus,
iron and arsenic content and δ13C and δ15N for these species. Nitrogen and phosphorus content of P. oceanica leaves also showed significant seasonal variability; on an annual basis, P. oceanica leaves averaged 1.55% N and 0.14% P at this monitoring site. Both N and P were more concentrated in the leaves in winter
than in summer, with winter maxima of 1.76% N and 0.17% P and summer minima of 1.34% N and 0.11% P. There was no significant
annual pattern observed in the δ13C of P. oceanica leaves, but there was a repeated 0.6‰ seasonal fluctuation in δ15N. Mean annual δ15N was 4.0‰; δ15N was lowest in May and it increased through the summer and autumn to a maximum in November. Over the geographic range of
our study area, there were interspecific differences in the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content of the two species. Posidonia oceanica N:P ratios were distributed around the critical value of 30:1 while the ratios for C. nodosa were lower than this value, suggesting P. oceanica we collected was not consistently limited by N or P while C. nodosa tended toward nitrogen limitation. Nutrient content was significantly correlated to morphological indicators of plant vigor.
Fe content of P. oceanica leaves varied by a factor of 5×, with a minimum of 31.1 μg g−1 and a maximum of 167.7 μg g−1. Arsenic was present in much lower tissue concentrations than Fe, but the As concentrations were more variable; the maximum
concentration of 1.60 μg g−1 was eight times as high as the minimum of 0.20 μg g−1. There were interspecific differences in δ13C of the two species; C. nodosa was consistently more enriched (δ13C = −7.8 ± 1.7‰) than P. oceanica (−13.2 ± 1.2‰). The δ13C of both species decreased significantly with increasing water depth. Depth related and regional variability in the δ13C and δ15N of both species were marked, suggesting that caution needs to be exercised when applying stable isotopes in food web analyses. 相似文献

Most of the current knowledge on Mediterranean gorgonians is restricted to investigations of those populations found within
shallow sublittoral waters, and only limited data are available for populations located below scuba depth. To overcome this
lack of information, the occurrence and abundance of the gorgonians Eunicella singularis, Paramuricea clavata, and Leptogorgia sarmentosa were investigated in northwestern Mediterranean benthic communities over a wide geographical (60 km of coastline) and bathymetrical
(0–70 m deep) extent using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The greatest occurrence and abundances of E. singularis and P. clavata were concentrated in areas that are directly exposed to strong near-bottom currents. E. singularis was the most common and abundant species and displayed great plasticity and amplitude in its environmental preferences. Conversely,
P. clavata showed a very patchy distribution that was associated with vertical rocky walls. Only isolated colonies of L. sarmentosa were observed in the study area. Hot spots of abundance of E. singularis and P. clavata were identified below a depth of 40 m, which demonstrates the importance of studying the distribution of benthic species
over a wide geographical and bathymetrical extent. 相似文献

We evaluated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in a 910 bp region of the cytochrome b gene of the storm petrel, Hydrobates pelagicus. Samples from birds collected from five populations in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Genetic differentiation within the Mediterranean basin was low but high in the Atlantic. Strong differences were noted between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean populations, confirming the distinction of the subspecies H. p. pelagicus and H. p. melitensis for the Atlantic and Mediterranean seabirds, respectively. Divergence between the two subspecies probably resulted from paleogeographic changes in the Strait of Gibraltar, which was likely the route used by H. pelagicus to invade the Mediterranean Sea. Current and past demography and ecology of the storm petrel is regarded as an explanation for the level of differentiation observed within each oceanic basin. We compare the phylogeographic pattern of the storm petrel to other seabirds that breed in the same regions.Communicated by S. A. Poulet, RoscoffC.C. and L.B. contributed equally to this paper. 相似文献

In spite of historical and current interest in Ciona intestinalis and its congeners, little is known about evolutionary relationships among the members of the genus Ciona. Here 744-bp sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene are used to examine phylogenetic relationships among three described species (C. intestinalis, C. roulei, C. savignyi) sampled from multiple coastal sites in the Northeast Pacific (CA, USA), Northwest Atlantic (from New Hampshire to Connecticut,
USA), Northeast Atlantic (Sweden and The Netherlands), and Mediterranean (Banyuls-sur-Mer, France). The samples were collected
in June–October 2005. The COI sequences of Northeast Pacific/Mediterranean (Type A) and Northwest Atlantic (Type B) C. intestinalis differ by ∼12% and C. roulei is nested within Type B C. intestinalis. Ciona savignyi differs from all other haplotypes by 13–16%. A previously undescribed but morphologically distinct Ciona sp. found at the Banyuls-sur-Mer site was >10% divergent from all other haplotypes. Although these data arise from a single
gene study, they indicate that further elucidation of species relationships within the genus and of the species’ distributions
will be needed if continuing invasions and potential reproductive isolation are to be investigated. 相似文献

The population structures of Buccinum tsubai and Neptunea constricta were compared using partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene. B. tsubai included four genetically distinguishable subpopulations (Hokkaido, Yamagata-Toyama, Yamato Bank, and San’in), which is consistent
with the results of our previous study using mitochondrial 16SrRNA sequences. The genetic structure of N. constricta was also clear, but the lineage sorting corresponding to the geographical distribution was not as clear as that of B. tsubai. The difference between the genetic structures of these two species might be due to a difference in either their dispersal
abilities or the historic distribution patterns in the Sea of Japan. The fossil record and nested clade analyses support the
latter alternative. The four subpopulations of B. tsubai are estimated to have diverged 0.42–1.46 million years ago, providing support for the existence of intermediate water of
normal salinity and oxygen concentration capable of sustaining B. tsubai between the low-salinity surface water and anoxic deep water during the Pleistocene glacial periods. The genetic diversity
of the Yamato Bank subpopulation of B. tsubai was lower than that of the other subpopulations, which is likely attributable to the small size of the Yamato Bank subpopulation. 相似文献

The great fecundity and very high larval mortality of most marine invertebrates and fish make possible substantial variance
in the number of offspring contributed by adults to subsequent generations. The reproductive success of such organisms may
thus resemble a sweepstakes lottery, in which a minority of progenitors succeeds in replacing an entire population, while
the majority fails to procreate. One specific prediction of this hypothesis, that genetic diversity of newly settled cohorts
should be less than that of the adult population, is tested in the present study. Microsatellite DNA markers were examined
in naturally spawned juvenile European flat oysters Ostrea edulis (L.), collected over a 12-day period in 1993 from the western Mediterranean Sea, near Sète, France (43°32′N, 3°56′E) and
grown out for a period of up to 10 months. Variation in these juveniles was compared to that in a pooled sample of adults
collected in 1994 from two locations (Thau Lagoon and Port St. Louis) that had statistically homogeneous allelic frequencies.
Though nearly twice as large as the pooled adult sample, the juvenile sample had only 60% of the adult allelic diversity.
Analyses of linkage disequilibrium and kinship, as well as estimation of the effective number of parents, suggested that 10–20
adults produced this juvenile cohort. This observation supports the hypothesis of sweepstakes reproductive success and suggests
that partial inbreeding may occur even in species with large populations and dispersing planktonic larvae.

The northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea share geological histories and display great faunal affinities. The majority
of the Mediterranean species have Atlantic origins, with a few species with tropical affinities. These include the parrotfish
Sparisoma cretense and the wrasse Thalassoma pavo that are restricted to the subtropical northeastern Atlantic, the Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, and Canaries)
and the southern Mediterranean. The Pleistocene glaciations have been described as having different effects on the fauna of
the two regions. During glacial peaks, Mediterranean waters remained warmer than those of the adjacent Atlantic. Within the
eastern Atlantic, the effects of Pleistocene glaciations were differentiated. Here, we perform a comparative analysis focusing
on T. pavo and S. cretense populations from the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean to assess the effects of Pleistocene glaciations in these
two species. Sequences from the mitochondrial control region were obtained and analyzed combining phylogeographic and demographic
approaches. Gene flow between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations was shown to be very high. The Mediterranean populations
of T. pavo and S. cretense showed high levels of genetic diversity, even in the eastern basin, pointing to an ancient colonization event. This suggests
that both species must have been able to persist in the Mediterranean during the cold Pleistocene periods. Historical migration
estimates revealed a Mediterranean towards Atlantic trend in the case of T. pavo, which may reflect the re-colonization of areas in the Atlantic by fish that survived the cold phases in relatively warmer
Mediterranean refugia. Our data also showed that within the Macaronesian Archipelagos, migrations occurred from Madeira towards
the Azores, for both T. pavo and S. cretense, thus supporting a post-glacial colonization of the Azores by fish that persisted in the warmer region of Madeira. Similar
geographic distributions, thermal affinities, and means of dispersion for T. pavo and S. cretense resulted in a similar response to the effects of Pleistocene glaciations, as evidenced by identical phylogeographic patterns. 相似文献

Halictine bees exhibit a wide range of social behaviour that varies both inter- and intraspecifically. Although previous studies
suggested that the intraspecific variation might be attributed to temperature differences, there was no direct evidence to
detect the relationships between temperature and socialities. Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) baleicum exhibited solitary behaviour in a cooler locality (Kawakita) because of the shorter breeding season; in a warmer locality
(Nishioka Park), however, this bee species exhibited eusociality at sunny site and solitary behaviour at shady site, whereas
a molecular phylogeny confirms that all of these colonies are evidently conspecific. Therefore, we examined the effect of
degree-day accumulation on the sympatric social variation of L. baleicum by rearing the bees to calculate the threshold temperature. Whereas they showed high mortality, the threshold temperature
was estimated to be 10.33°C and the expected degree-day accumulation was 340 degree days. When we use this value of a degree-day
accumulation to estimate the expected eclosion date, the estimated dates were always consistent with observed eclosion dates.
In any sites where the bees were solitary, the degree-day accumulation was not enough for the second eclosion by the end of
the bee-active season. In Nishioka Park, sex ratio of the first brood was female biased, and daughters were smaller than mothers;
in Kawakita, however, there was no sex bias, and daughters were as large as their mothers indicating that the foundresses
seem to produce gyne-sized females in Kawakita but worker-sized females in Nishioka though these females do not become workers
at shady site. 相似文献

Summary. For butterflies to be efficient foragers, they need to
be able to recognize rewarding flowers. Flower signals such as colours
and scents assist this recognition process. For plant species to attract
and keep butterflies as pollinators, species-specific floral signals are
crucial. The aim of this study is to investigate foraging responses to
floral scents in three temperate butterfly species, Inachis io L.
(Nymphalidae), Aglais urticae L. (Nymphalidae), and
Gonepteryx rhamni L. (Pieridae), in behavioural choice
bioassays. The butterflies were allowed to choose bet-ween flower models
varying in scent and colour (mauve or green). Flowers or vegetative
parts from the plants Centaurea scabiosa L. (Asteraceae),
Cirsium arvense (L.) (Asteraceae), Knautia arvensis (L.)
(Dipsacaceae), Buddleja davidii Franchet (Loganicaeae), Origanum vulgareL. (Lamiaceae), Achillea millefolium L. (Asteraceae), and
Philadelphus coronarius L. (Hydrangiaceae) were used as scent
sources. All visits to the models — those that included probing and
those that did not — were counted, as was the duration of these
behaviours. Both flower-naive and flower-experienced (conditioned to
sugar-water rewards, the colour mauve, and specific floral scents)
butterflies were tested for their preference for floral versus
vegetative scents, and to floral scent versus colour. The butterflies
were also tested for their ability to switch floral scent preferences in
response to rewards. Flower-naive butterflies demonstrated a preference
for the floral scent of the butterfly-favourable plants C.
arvense and K. arvensis over the floral scent of the non-favourable
plants Achillea millefolium (Asteraceae), and Philadelphus
coronarius cv. (Hydrangiaceae). Most of the butterflies that were
conditioned to floral scents of either C. arvense, K. arvensis,
or B. davidii readily switched theirfloral scent preferences to
the one most recently associated with reward, thus demonstrating that
floral scent constancy is a result from learning. These findings suggest
that these butterflies use floral scent as an important cue signal to
initially identify and subsequently recognize and distinguish among
rewarding plants.

The fissiparous starfish genus Coscinasterias (Verrill) is represented in shallow waters around many of the world's continents. This wide distribution could be explained by dispersal, vicariance, or translocation associated with shipping, and represents an excellent system for marine biogeographic research. We conducted a global phylogeographic analysis of 42 Coscinasterias mtDNA cytochrome oxidase 1 sequences (15 haplotypes) from 18 sites, including representatives of all four recognised species. Phylogenetic analysis yielded a robust phylogeny, with strong support for the monophyly of the genus (90% bootstrap support) and of each separate species (99-100%). Haplotypes exhibited strong phylogeographic structure, with robust mtDNA clades often associated with distinct land masses. A general lack of genetic differentiation within sites may reflect fissiparity. However, shared haplotypes over larger distances (e.g. across Japan), and the presence of related haplotypes on adjacent land masses (e.g. Tasmania, New Zealand; 1.6-1.8%) suggest that long-distance dispersal is an important biogeographical process for Coscinasterias. The 4.0-4.4% divergence between Japanese and South African sister groups may relate to transequatorial dispersal around the onset of the Pleistocene. Divergent Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of C. tenuispina (maximum 1.5%) may deserve subspecific recognition, and high divergences within Australian C. muricata (maximum 8.0%) suggest a species complex. 相似文献

Species identification in the phylum Nematoda is complicated due to the paucity of easily obtainable diagnostic morphological
features. Furthermore, the cosmopolitan distribution of several species despite low dispersal abilities makes cryptic diversity
potentially substantial within this phylum. We conducted a population genetic survey in the marine nematode Geomonhystera disjuncta in Belgium and The Netherlands in two seasons. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (COI) gene was screened with
the single-strand conformation polymorphism method in 759 individuals. The 43 haplotypes were grouped into five lineages,
with low divergences within (<3%) and high divergences between lineages (>14%). Analysis of the nuclear ITS region yielded
concordant tree topologies, indicating the presence of five cryptic taxa within G. disjuncta. Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) illustrated a significant structuring in all lineages and temporal fluctuations in
haplotype frequencies within and between locations. Metapopulation dynamics and/or priority effects best explained this structuring.
Finally, our data indicate that the COI gene may be useful for DNA barcoding purposes. 相似文献

Structure and complexity of the substrate are important habitat characteristics for benthic epifauna. The specific growth and mortality rates and inducible defence characters on medium-sized blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) exposed to shore crabs (Carcinus maenas L.) were examined on three different substrate types in combined field and laboratory experiments. The experiments showed that complexity of the substrate increased blue mussel survival significantly, through a decrease in predation pressure. However, increased intraspecific competition for food on the complex substrate resulted in significantly lower growth rates of the mussels. Inducible defence characters were also influenced by substrate type. Blue mussels were more affected by predators on the structurally simple substrate, where they developed thicker shells and a larger posterior adductor muscle. 相似文献

The genus Tripterygion (Risso 1826) is restricted to the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and comprises only three species. T. melanuros and T. tripteronotus are essentially endemic to the Mediterranean, while Tripterygion delaisi occurs in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. Two subspecies of T. delaisi have been described (T. d. xanthosoma in the Mediterranean and T. d. delaisi in the Atlantic). Several scenarios have been proposed for the evolution of T. delaisi subspecies, but so far its subspeciation process is not clear. In this study we present a population survey of T. delaisi including specimens from the two recognized subspecies. We combined a phylogeographic approach with estimates of the direction of migration (between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean) and of the coalescence time of the two subspecies, using polymorphic mitochondrial and nuclear genes. The results of this study clearly support the existence of two Tripterygion delaisi clades, one in the eastern Atlantic islands and another in the Atlantic coasts of Europe and in the Mediterranean. Historical migration between the islands and Western Europe plus Mediterranean was restricted, and showed a westbound trend, with a higher number of migrants going from the Western Europe plus Mediterranean into the islands. We estimated the time of coalescence of both groups of T. delaisi to be more recent than the onset of Pleistocene glaciations (1.7 Mya). Our results are consistent with previous hypothesis that consider successive dispersal events of a Tripterygion ancestor from the western African coast colonizing the Atlantic islands and the Mediterranean, promoting the evolutionary divergence between these areas. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing
(EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed
by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (θ = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population. No pattern of isolation-by-distance
was recorded across the range covered by sampling, from the Kattegat to the Aegean Sea. Conversely to genetically structured
Mediterranean populations, Atlantic populations ranging from Denmark to Portugal could be considered as representative of
the same panmictic unit (θ = 0.009, not significant). Results further demonstrated stability of multilocus genetic structure among temporarily replicated
cohort samples [0+, 1+, subadults] from several coastal and estuarine locations from Bay of Biscay, excepted for the amylase
locus Am2B3-2 at one location (Pertuis d’Antioche). Despite coherence of such observed patterns of multilocus differentiation with previous
allozymic surveys in sole, and with patterns generally obtained for other marine fish species, single-locus results from EPICs
indicated divergent coalescence schemes supporting a complex response to ecology and history of sole’s populations. Results
stress the use of nuclear genes such as EPIC markers to investigate population structure, but also historical, demographic,
and possibly selective processes in marine fishes. 相似文献

Summary. To better understand the biological role of floral scents for
butterflies, electrophysiological responses to floral scents were
investigated using combined gas chromatography and electroantennographic
detection (GC-EAD). The antennal responses of three butterfly species,
Aglais urticae L. (Nymphalidae), Inachis io L. (Nymphalidae), and
Gonepteryx rhamni L. (Pieridae) to floral scent compounds from both
natural and synthetic mixtures were examined. Floral scents were
collected from the butterfly nectar plants Cirsium arvense (L.)
(Asteraceae), and Buddleja davidii Franchet cv. (Loganicaeae) with
dynamic head-space methods on Tenax-GR and eluted with pentane. These
eluates, composed of natural floral scent blends, represent an array of
compounds in their natural state. In the GC-EAD analyses eleven
compounds were identified from C. arvense with the benzenoid compound
phenylacetaldehyde in highest abundance. Seventeen compounds were
identified from B. davidii with the irregular terpene oxoisophorone in
highest abundance. Thirty-nine synthetic floral scent compounds were
mixed in pentane, in equal amounts; about 35 ng were allowed to reach
the antennae. The butterflies showed antennal responses to most of the
floral scent compounds from both natural and synthetic blends except to
the highly volatile monoterpene alkenes. Certain benzenoid compounds
such as phenylacetaldehyde, monoterpenes such as linalool, and irregular
terpenes such as oxoisophorone, were emitted in relatively large amounts
from C. arvense and B. davidii, and elicited the strongest antennal
responses. These compounds also elicited strong antennal responses when
present in the synthetic scent blends. Thus, the butterflies seem to
have many and /or sensitive antennal receptors for these compounds,
which points to their biological importance. Moreover, these compounds
are exclusively of floral scent origin. For B. davidii, which depends
highly on butterflies for pollination, the exclusive floral scent
compounds emitted in high abundance could be the result of an adaptive
pressure to attract butterflies.

In order to assess feeding habits and trophic level of this species, we analysed the stomach content of 189 specimens collected
monthly in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (central Mediterranean Sea). The results showed that this species is a pelagic predator
focusing on paralepidid fish and, more in detail, on two species such as Paralepis speciosa and Paralepis coregonoides. Among cephalopods, Heteroteuthis dispar was the most abundant prey item in the stomach contents, whereas among crustaceans the hyperidean amphipods Phrosina semilunata and Brachyscelus crusculum were the most representative species. In the present study, the diet of the albacore did not vary significantly throughout
the period of study focusing, in the different season of catch, on the same prey species. Not even a size-related diet shift
was observed, with a partitioning of the albacore sample into five size groups. Levin’s standardized index showed a low value
indicating a limited trophic niche width, with a diet dominated by a limited number of taxa and then a specialist behaviour for this predator. The estimated TROPH value for T. alalunga resulted very similar to that calculated in Mediterranean Sea for other species as well as Xiphias gladius, Thunnus thynnus, Euthynnus alletteratus and Sarda sarda. Then, the albacore tuna can be considered as a top carnivore. 相似文献

Megrim, Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, and four spot megrim, Lepidorhombus boscii, are two marine fish species of high commercial interest. Despite their quite heavy exploitation little is known on the genetic
structure of their populations. The present work aimed at characterizing the first seven microsatellites markers available
for the two megrim species. These new markers were in a second step employed to describe the population structure of the two
species among their almost entire habitat range (Atlantic and Mediterranean samples). Our study confirmed the existence of
a strong genetic difference between Atlantic and Mediterranean megrim species already described in the literature for L. whiffiagonis on the basis of variations at ribosomal genes. Additionally our analysis gave the first evidences of a strong genetic differentiation
among Atlantic populations in both megrim species (within Atlantic global FST in L. whiffiagonis and L. boscii were respectively 0.158 and 0.145). When describing megrim population structure, the comparison between allele-frequency-based
tests (FST comparisons) and genotype-based inferences (Bayesian approach) gave evidences of a hierarchical structure of the populations.
In conclusion, our work enlighten the existence of two different stocks within the Atlantic Ocean and one in the Mediterranean
Sea that will clearly need to be managed separately. As the present results do not fully support the current megrim stock
boundaries they will surely help to rethink megrim management policies in the future. 相似文献
