The abundance of trophic sources on the intertidal zone is discontinuous and their supply can vary both in a predictable or unpredictable way. The Mediterranean semi-terrestrial crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus, is known, as adult, to entirely rely on the intertidal trophic sources, and, consequently, it faces the fluctuations of nutritional sources and quality. To clarify the relationships between the feeding habits of an Italian population of P. marmoratus and the temporal variation of its food sources, we carried out a 2-year sampling protocol. Data on seasonal variation in composition of intertidal food item assemblages, on the average content in N and C of the commonest algae, on seasonal changes in crabs feeding habits were collected and compared using a suite of multivariate and univariate techniques. Results showed that P. marmoratus takes advantage of the recruitment phase of the most common invertebrates, affecting and controlling the abundance even of those species whose adults are out of its reach. It can act both as a herbivore, and as a carnivore that shifts between bivalves, more abundant in spring/summer, and the periwinkle Melaraphe neritoides, during winter. In conclusion, we provide evidences on the food choice of this common rocky shore species, which is very plastic and capable of relying on many trophic sources, possibly influencing the abundance and/or the population structure of a number of intertidal populations.  相似文献

Searlesia dira Reeve is a locally abundant, carnivorous gastropod that occurs from Alaska to central California. I studied populations of this snail at a variety of sites on San Juan Island in order to provide information on their distribution and abundance and to analyze their community role, i.e., their potential impact on their prey populations and their dietary overlap with co-occurring invertebrate predators. I established permanent transects, both random and in crevices, at three areas of differing exposure to wave action. On these transects I recorded the number and size ofS. dira, activity, distance to nearest neighbor, other organisms present, and tidal height on four phases of the mixed semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The results are (1) an increase in density with increase in substrate relief, (2) an occurrence of highest densities in moderately exposed and exposed sites rather than in protected ones, (3) an increase in mean size with increase in depth along the intertidal gradient, (4) an increase in both total activity and feeding success on the high water immediately following an extreme minus low tide occurring during the daytime in the summer, (5) a relative restriction of feeding success to that high tide, and (6) a similarity of the diet to the relative abundance of the main observed prey for most areas. The main exceptions are chitons and one lower intertidal limpet, all of which are taken in excess of their apparent abundance and especially in the middle intertidal. The upward extension of some lower intertidal prey populations, such as chitons, may be limited by the increased susceptibility of individuals at the upper margin of the population to predators such asS. dira; susceptibility appears to be increased after periods with a higher probability of increased physiological stress, such as extreme low tides on summer days.  相似文献

On many sea shores of the Niedersachsen coast, the polychaete Scolelepis squamata is the dominant animal species living in the sediment of exposed beaches.The population of the predatory species Eteone longa, with a main distribution in more sheltered intertidal and subtidal habitats, has a certain overlap with S. squamata. In these restricted areas, S. squamata suffers from a permanent pursuit by E. longa during low tide. Field and laboratory studies have revealed that this predator-prey relationship follows a distinct behavioural pattern and is an exploitation of surviving animals: the predator does not ingest the whole prey individual but only feeds on regenerable parts of the body. Both species draw characteristic tracks on the sediment surface that illustrate the phases of the chase, the attempts at defence and the mutilation of the prey species.Communicated by O. The distribution of three functional groups of algae (filamentous, corticated terete and calcareous articulated) was investigated in low-shore, turf-forming assemblages from rocky shores in the western Mediterranean Sea (Italy). Algae were sampled along shores from three different stations. Shores were either exposed to wave action or sheltered and were characterised by various inclinations of the rocky substratum (horizontal, sloping and vertical). The hypotheses tested were: that the relative abundance of the three functional groups of algae (1) varies between sheltered and exposed shores, (2) is influenced by substratum inclination and (3) that these distributions are consistent across stations. There was no clear relationship between the morphology of turf-forming algae and shore characteristics. Covers of filamentous, corticated terete and calcareous articulated algae differed among shores and stations, but patterns were not consistent across shores with similar exposure to waves and substratum inclination. Turfs often comprised algae with different morphologies, in a combination of anchor and epiphytic species. It is suggested that functional groups of algae, as currently identified, are not effective in describing changes in distribution of algae between sheltered and exposed shores, when turf morphologies are considered. Future research on relationships between morphology and ecology of algae should consider the potential importance of positive interactions among associated species, which could override responses of individual functional groups.  相似文献

Relationships between community structure and environmental factors were sought through multivariate analysis (quantification analysis and correspondence analysis) of data obtained in a benthic macrofauna survey of a rocky low-tide platform located at Usujiri, southern Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 21 species were found. However, their annual mean abundance was dominated by only a few species. Three dominant species of the platform (Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula andSeptifer virgatus) accounted for an average of 92% of total abundance. Three environmental factors with associated species groups were examined. Among them, micro-topographic characteristics and wave action defined the main correspondence variables.L. brevicula was a characteristic member of the boulder and sheltered field.S. virgatus was the dominant species of sloped surfaces.C. challengeri, S. virgatus, andMytilus edulis were characteristic of ledge or bench environments. Finally,C. challengeri was characteristic of nip and high wave-exposure environments, given its exclusive appearences in these locations. However, as the degree of exposure depends on the scale of wash through the platform, it is directly limited by the microtopographic properties of low-tide platforms. Specific environmental influences such as exposure and height above the datum-plane were rather disapparent. Any overall effects on the community structure were synthesized by those of microtopography. After complete consideration, it was concluded that the community structure of the macrobenthos in this low-tide platform was found to be primarily under the influence of microtopographic characteristics.  相似文献

Recruitment and population structure of Perna perna in low shore mussel beds were investigated over 15 months at six sites along the south coast of South Africa. Initial, subjective classification of sites as wave exposed or wave sheltered (three of each) was confirmed using the dissolution of cement blocks to measure average water flux and dynamometers for maximum wave force. Recruitment occurred throughout the year, but recruit (1–5 mm) densities were significantly higher from January to April 1996 on both shore types. Recruit densities were positively correlated with adult (>15 mm) densities for both shore types (P < 0.05) but the correlations were extremely weak (r 2 < 0.06 in each case). In areas with 100% cover, adult size (mean and maximum lengths) was greater on exposed sites, but density showed the reverse and was negatively correlated with maximum wave strength (r = −0.84). Despite differences in adult densities and sizes, biomass, which is a product of the two, showed no significant difference between the two shore types (ANOVA P > 0.05). Thus wave exposure dramatically affects density, recruitment and mussel size, but not recruitment timing or biomass where there is 100% cover, and mediates a three-way interaction among food supply, larval supply and intraspecific competition for space. In contrast to shores with saturation recruitment, mussel biomass here appears to be limited by recruit supply and constraints of food, especially on sheltered shores, while density is regulated through intraspecific competition for space primarily on exposed shores and at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Functions of the major cheliped in pagurid hermit crabs have been studied in fights for shells. The major cheliped often shows sexual size dimorphism, suggesting that sexual selection favors the development of the male major cheliped. The function of the major cheliped in male–male competition was examined in Pagurus nigrofascia collected from April to June 2009 on the intertidal rocky shore in southern Hokkaido, Japan (41°N, 140°E). Sexual size dimorphism of the major cheliped was observed, and precopulatory guarding males had larger major chelipeds than solitary ones. Guarding males used the major cheliped to deter intruders during competitive interactions. Males without a major cheliped were disadvantaged even if they were larger than opponents and had ownership. Cheliped size affected the outcomes of contests between similar sized males. This suggests that the male major cheliped in P. nigrofascia protects mates from competitors and, consequently, enhances male mating success. Sexual selection may favor the development of the major cheliped in male pagurids.  相似文献

Pachygrapsus marmoratus is a semi-terrestrial crab and the most common grapsid crab in the intertidal belt of rocky shores throughout the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and northeastern Atlantic. In this study, the combined effects of temperature (T), body mass (M), and sex (S) on the routine oxygen consumption rate (R) in P. marmoratus were quantified. The blotted wet body mass of the specimens ranged between 43 mg and 18.0 g, and five test temperatures were used between 13.5 and 28.0°C. Six candidate models that reflected different assumptions regarding the dependence of R on S and T were compared. Model selection was based on Kullback–Leibler’s information theory and Akaike’s information criterion (AIC). The model had the highest support by the data (E is the activation energy, B = 8.618 × 10−5 eV K−1 is Boltzmann’s constant, T a is the absolute temperature in Kelvin, and b the allometric scaling exponent); for P. marmoratus it was found that No sex dependence of R was supported by the data. Following a multi-model inference (MMI) approach, the mean (± SE) allometric exponent was 0.750 (± 0.013) having a 95% (bootstrap) confidence interval of 0.726–0.774. Thus, it was established that P. marmoratus follows Kleiber’s 3/4 law, as seems to be generally true for intertidal crabs. The allometric exponent was independent of temperature as has also been reported for many other marine invertebrates (at normal temperatures). Q 10 values were relatively low, indicating wide thermal tolerance of the species. Model selection based on information theory is recommended for respiration studies, as an effective method in finding a parsimonious approximating model. MMI by model averaging, based on Akaike weights, is an effective way to make robust parameter estimations and deal with model selection uncertainty.  相似文献

This study investigates effects of wave exposure on beds of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the infaunal communities associated with them. Nine sites of varying wave exposure were sampled near Groenrivier, on the west coast of South Africa. Wave exposure was measured using a Palumbi device, and exposure ranged from 7.17×103 to 18.49×103 N m–2. Percentage mussel cover at each site was measured using 50×50 cm quadrats, and three 10×10 cm samples were removed from the mussel beds in the mid-intertidal zones of each site for examination of infauna. Percentage mussel cover, mean mussel length, mussel biomass and mussel bed depth all peaked at intermediate exposures, declining towards both the most sheltered and most exposed sites. Infaunal species diversity and richness both showed the reverse trend, peaking at the most sheltered and most exposed sites, and declining at intermediate exposures. Neither infaunal abundance, nor biomass, was significantly correlated to wave exposure, although abundance was highest at sheltered sites and biomass greatest at the most exposed site, which was dominated by limpets and large robust polychaetes.Communicated by J.P. Encrusting algae have been described as dominant space occupying species on rocky shores around the world. Despite their abundance, however, most studies classify species under generic names (e.g. Ralfsia sp.) or as a functional group (e.g. encrusting algae), thereby underestimating the number of species present and their ecological importance. Studies on six rocky shores of varying exposure, in Hong Kong, recorded eight common species of encrusting algae. The greatest abundance of encrusting algae was recorded on shores of intermediate exposure, where four distinct zonation bands could be identified; a cyanobacterial Kyrtuthrix-Zone in the upper midlittoral, a Bare-Zone below this, a Mixed-Zone in the lower midlittoral and a Coralline-Zone in the infralittoral fringe. Abundance declined on shores of greater and lower exposure to wave action, where bivalves and barnacles were competitively dominant. Certain species were found in greater abundance on exposed shores (e.g. Dermocarpa sp. and Hildenbrandia occidentalis), while others preferred more sheltered shores (e.g. Hildenbrandia prototypus and Kyrtuthrix maculans). With the exception of some cyanobacterial crusts, the abundance of encrusting algae was always greatest towards the low shore, an area of decreased physical stress and increased herbivore density. Zonation patterns showed seasonal variation associated with the monsoonal climate of Hong Kong. Most species increased in abundance during the cool season, while during the summer months the cover and vertical extent of encrusting algae decreased in relation to summer temperatures, although K. maculans increased in abundance during the summer. On Hong Kong shores, encrusting algae have a high species richness and exhibit within-functional group spatial and temporal variation which is mediated by herbivory and seasonal, physical stresses.  相似文献

Canopy-forming macroalgae are key species on temperate rocky shores. However, there is a lack of understanding of how the relative balance of physical and biological factors controls the establishment and persistence of intertidal macroalgae. Here we present an integrated study of the relative importance of wave-induced forces and grazing for the recruitment and survival of the canopy-forming intertidal macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus and F. spiralis. A set of overtopped breakwaters provided a nearly unconfounded gradient in wave exposure between seaward and landward sides. A biomechanical analysis was performed based on empirical measurements of maximum drag forces in breaking waves, a model of long-term maximum wave height, and the breaking stress of Fucus spp. The estimated maximum flow speed (7-8 m/s) on the seaward side of the breakwaters was predicted to completely dislodge or prune Fucus spp. larger than approximately 10 cm, while dislodgment was highly unlikely on the landward side for all sizes. Experimental transplantation of Fucus spp. supported the biomechanical analysis but also suggested that mechanical abrasion may further limit survival in wave-exposed locations. Experimental removal of the limpet Patella vulgata, which was the principal grazer at this site, resulted in recruitment of Fucus spp. on the seaward side. We present a model of limpet grazing that indicates that limpet densities >5-20 individuals/m2 provide a proximate mechanism preventing establishment of Fucus spp., whereas wave action >2 m/s reduces persistence through dislodgment and battering. In a conceptual model we further propose that recruitment and survival of juvenile Fucus spp. are controlled indirectly by wave exposure through higher limpet densities at exposed locations. This model predicts that climate change, and in particular an increased frequency of storm events in the northeast Atlantic, will restrict fucoids to more sheltered locations.  相似文献

To understand the evolution of weapons, we must understand both their functions and relative importance compared to body size in determining fighting success. Many decapod crustaceans develop disproportionately large chelipeds for their body size and use them as a weapon in agonistic interaction. There are, however, examples where weapons are merely signals of resource holding potential (RHP) and the RHP is actually determined by body size. We investigated the function and relative efficacy of body size and major cheliped size in male–male contests for females in the hermit crab Diogenes nitidimanus. Contests over females took two forms: (1) males preemptively guarded females and opponents did not fight with the guarding male. Cheliped size contributed significantly to the settlement of these contests and probably functioned as a visual signal for the opponents. (2) Guarding males engaged in physical combat with an opponent. In these cases, both body and cheliped sizes affected contest outcomes. The effect size for cheliped size was as strong, or stronger, than that for body size. These results suggest that large chelipeds have evolved as a true weapon and are effective in escalated fights for resources. Therefore they are also efficient visual signals for settling contests with only display. Our results are a rare example that clearly demonstrate that weapons are a more important determinant of fights than body size when both body and weapon size affect resource acquisition.  相似文献

Nerita undata, N. plicata, N. polita, N. albicilla and N. textilis are common intertidal gastropods on Aldabra Atoll. Each species prefers a different level on the shore and/or different degrees of exposure to wave action. Patterns of zonation, population size-frequency structure and biomass are given. N. undata exhibits 2 distinct ecophenotypes. Normal types occur on expsed to moderately sheltered shores but are replaced by type B in extremely sheltered conditions. Differences in shell morphology and population structure are also noted. Foraging by all species was confined to hours of darkness, generally at low tide. Activity of N. polita was induced slightly on overcast days. N. undata and N. textilis are cryptically coloured and often visible during the day. N. plicata is conspicuous, but is protected by a strong shell. N. polita and N. albicilla are often brightly and variably coloured, but both are concealed during daylight. No Nerita were found infected with trematodes, suggesting that the degree of infection was extremely low. Habitats of the Aldabran Nerita are compared with 3 species on Barbados, West Indies.  相似文献

Reef crabs, Ozius truncatus H. Milne-Edwards 1834, and gastropods, Bembicium nanum (Lamarck, 1882) and Nerita atramentosa Reeve, 1855, were collected from a South Australian rocky intertidal platform in April 1981. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine (1) the size of prey chosen, and (2) the energy gained by the reef crabs feeding on B. nanum and N. atramentosa. The time taken to break open and consume prey increased exponentially with prey shell height. Crabs with larger master claws had shorter handling times for a given prey size. When offered a range of prey sizes, crabs selected prey of a certain size, well below the maximum prey size that they could handle. The mean prey size selected by crabs did not concide with the size predicted to yield the maximum rate of energy gain. For example, one reef crab preferred B. nanum 5 to 8 mm in size, but the size class predicted to yield the greatest energy gain was 4 to 4.9 mm. The results of the laboratory prey-choice experiments are discussed in relation to the shore-level size gradients of B. nanum and N. atramentosa.  相似文献

Harsh physical conditions in the intertidal zone are the cause of an ample amount of dead macroinvertebrates, which constitute a food source for carrion-feeders. In the European Wadden Sea, this trophic guild includes decapod crustaceans and fish when the tide is in, while during nocturnal low tides the polychaete Phyllodoce mucosa is attracted in large numbers by dead mollusks, crabs or worms on the sediment surface. Within 10 s worms emerged to the surface, crawled as far as 15 m on mucus trails towards the carcass, sucked in tissue up to one-third of their own weight, and then quickly retreated to below the surface. Abundance of P. mucosa was highest in the lower intertidal zone and winter. The seaward high abundance pattern, however, did not continue into the shallow subtidal. In summer, few were attracted during daytime or when the tide was in. However, up to 447 worms aggregated at a single crushed mussel within 20 min at dusk during low-tide exposure. This study suggests that during winter carrion-feeding is an important trophic niche on cold-temperate, intertidal mud flats occupied by a phyllodocid polychaete that is segregated in feeding time from most other scavengers and benefits from cold-sensitive benthic invertebrates.Communicated by O. We evaluated the effects of potential predators from intertidal habitats on Strongylocentrotus purpuratus survival using laboratory experiments and assessed abundances of main predatory species along the Pacific coast of North America. The interactive effects of urchins’ and predators’ sizes in mediating predation were quantified. Habitat complexity (substrate pits, adult spine canopy) was manipulated to examine its effects on predation of most susceptible individuals (<14 mm). Pachygrapsus crassipes was identified as a major predator of urchins up to ≈30 mm. A positive effect of predator size on consumption of progressively larger urchins was detected, probably due to a mechanical limitation on crabs’ ability to consume large prey. Larger claws of males with respect to females of comparable sizes facilitated the handling of larger prey. Substrate refuges significantly reduced mortality on juvenile urchins. These results show that crab predation may be important in organizing intertidal communities, despite multiple ecological mechanisms promoting sea urchin survival.  相似文献

Ten sympatric rocky shore species and 3 brackish-water species of Sphaeromatidae were studied. Rocky shores were classified in terms of substrate and exposure to wave action. Although most of the rocky-shore species occur on all shore classes, vertical and horizontal distribution in each species, as well as densities, vary with substrate and wave action. A close relationship between distribution and breeding exists in the rocky-shore species; maximum differences in the vertical distribution of juveniles and adults occur, together with the highest reproductive capacities, in the species exposed to the greatest wave action. Tolerances to temperature, salinity and desiccation are wider in the species of brackish water and less exposed rocky shores, correlating with the greater variations in these conditions where wave action is reduced. Exoskeletons and pereopods are stouter in the species of more exposed shores, except where the microhabitat affords protection from wave action. In Isocladus armatus, geographic and seasonal variations in relative frequencies of colour forms correlate with differences in environmental temperatures. Observations and experiments were made at 2 intertidal areas near Beaufort, North Carolina, USA from May 1977 to July 1978 to determine why the oyster Crassostrea virginica dominated the community in areas protected from wave action but not in areas directly exposed to waves. Barnacles, oysters, the green alga Enteromorpha sp. and the mussel Brachiodontes exustus were the main occupiers of primary space at the mid and low intertidal levels of exposed areas. The intertidal community at the protected site consisted of a mid intertidal occupied by the barnacles Balanus amphitrite and Chthamalus fragilis, and the oyster C. virginica, and a low intertidal dominated by C. virginica. The exposed area was highly variable with high colonization and mortality for all species producing large seasonal changes in structure. The protected site remained constant throughout the year; there was no evidence of further colonization of either barnacles or oysters and mortality was very low. Recolonization experiments, selective removal of species, and growth and survival data demonstrated that C. virginica does not become dominant at exposed locations because (1) the constant wave shock at the ocean site reduces growth and increases mortality of young and adult oysters and (2) oysters are outcompeted by the mussel B. exustus. The monopolization of space by C. virginica at protected sites contrasts with studies north of Cape Hatteras where the abundance of predators produces a more diverse and heterogeneous community. Predation was unimportant in Beaufort because predators were absent at the exposed areas and the oyster drill Urosalpinx cinerea was restricted to the subtidal zone at the protected site. This absence of predators indicates a higher level of environmental stress near Beaufort compared to areas farther north.  相似文献

Morphological variation and vertical distribution of Fucus vesiculosus were quantified at several sites in the Finnish archipelago (Baltic Sea). F. vesiculosus samples were obtained from skerries at geographical distances of 1 km or more (large scale) and at intervals of ca 100 m around a single island (small scale). The results were examined in relation to wave exposure, calculated by Baardseth and effective fetch cartographic methods. Despite the fact that the exposure indices were calculated differently they correlated strongly. Vegetative morphological characteristics of F. vesiculosus illustrate the morphological differences both within and between exposure gradients. The tallest and widest F. vesiculosus plants were found at the sheltered end of the large-scale exposure gradient. Those from equally sheltered sites of the island were smaller in all respects. Thus, the trend from small narrow plants to large wide sheltered plants was expressed differently over the different geographical scales. Consequently localities with similar exposure indices may have morphologically different F. vesiculosus populations. Shores with similar cartographic exposure indices can be different in nature. Underwater topography and shore locations, either close to the mainland or at the outermost sites of the archipelago, affect the exposure. Although a sheltered shore is indicated, the sublittoral zone may be quite exposed to the movements of water. In contrast, in an open shore environment underwater rocks, boulders and shallow water areas can provide sheltered habitats. The depth range of the F. vesiculosus belt exhibited two distinctive patterns. At sheltered sites, around islands in the outermost reaches of the archipelago F. vesiculosus can grow to a maximum depth of 5 m. In exposed habitats the belt becomes narrower, reaching a maximum depth of 3 m. Closer to the mainland F. vesiculosus is found at exposed sites to a maximum depth of 5 m; the depth range at sheltered sites is narrower, only reaching depths of 2 m or less. In conclusion, the changes in plant morphology and in the vertical belt distribution are similar to each other along both gradients at the exposed ends of the wave action spectrum; however, the two gradients diverge at the sheltered ends of the spectrum. A multi-factorial experiment was designed to investigate the effect of the following factors on the cardiac activity of the intertidal crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus: respiratory medium (air, water), temperature (four levels, 10, 17.5, 25, 32.5 °C), season (winter, summer) and body size (two levels, carapace ≤21 mm and carapace >21 mm). The results showed that the heart rate of P. marmoratus increased linearly with temperature and decreased when the specimens were exposed to air rather than water. Moreover, the heart rate values in summer were lower than those in winter at the corresponding temperature and body size. The summer heart rate–temperature regression line was laterally (to the right) shifted with respect to the winter line, suggesting a seasonal acclimation. Body size affected heart rate only at the acclimation temperature (17.5 °C), while no significant effect was detected at lower or higher temperatures. During the reproductive season a separate experiment was carried out to assess the effect of sex and reproductive status on heart rate. No significant difference was found among mean values of males, berried females and females without eggs. The results of the present study confirm the high physiological plasticity of this species, suggesting that P. marmoratus is a truly amphibious crab, able to deal with both water- and air-breathing during its activity.
