Classic island biogeographic theory predicts that equilibrium will be reached when immigration and extinction rates are equal.
These rates are modified by number of species in source area, number of intermediate islands, distance to recipient island,
and size of intermediate islands. This general model has been variously modified and proposed to be a stochastic process with
minimal competitive interaction or heavily deterministic. Predictive models of recovery (regardless of the end point chosen)
have been based on the appropriateness of the MacArthur-Wilson models.
Because disturbance frequency, severity, and intensity vary in their effect on community dynamics, we propose that disturbance
levels should first be defined before evaluating the applicability of island biogeographical theory. Thus, we suggest a classification
system of four disturbance levels based on recovery patterns by primary and secondary succession and faunal organization by
primary (invasion of vacant areas) and secondary (remnant of previous community remains) processes.
Level 1A disturbances completely destroy communities with no upstream or downstream sources of colonizers, while some component
of near surface interstitial or hyporheic flora and fauna survive level 1B disturbances. Recovery has been reported to take
from five years to longer than 25 years, when most invading colonists do not have an aerial form.
Level 2 disturbances destroy the communities but leave upstream and downstream colonization sources (level 2A) and, sometimes,
a hyporheic pool of colonizers (level 2B). Recovery studies have indicated primary succession and faunal structuring patterns
(2A) with recovery times of 90–400 days or secondary succession and faunal structuring patterns (2B) with recovery times of
40–250 days.
Level 3 disturbances result in reduction in species abundance and diversity along a stream reach; level 4 disturbances result
in reduction of abundance and diversity in discrete patches. Both disturbance types lead to secondary succession and secondary
faunal organization. Recovery rates can be quite rapid, varying from less than 10 days to 100 or more days.
We suggest that island biogeographical models seem appropriate to recovery by secondary processes after level 3 and 4 disturbances,
where competition may be an important organizing factor, while models of numerical abundance and resource tracking are probably
of better use where community development is by primary succession (levels 1 and 2).
Development of predictive recovery models requires research that addresses a number of fundamental questions. These include
the role of hydrologic patterns on colonization dynamics, the role of nonaerial colonizers in recovery from level 1 disturbances,
and assessment of the impact of changes in the order of invasion by colonizers of varying energetic efficiencies. Finally,
we must be able to assemble these data and determine whether information that guides community organization at one level of
disturbance can provide insights into colonization dynamics at other levels. 相似文献

Application of game theory for a groundwater conflict in Mexico 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Exploitation of scarce water resources, particularly in areas of high demand, inevitably produces conflict among disparate stakeholders, each of whom may have their own set of priorities. In order to arrive at a socially acceptable compromise, the decision-makers should seek an optimal trade-off between conflicting objectives that reflect the priorities of the various stakeholders. In this study, game theory was applied to a multiobjective conflict problem for the Alto Rio Lerma Irrigation District, located in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico, where economic benefits from agricultural production should be balanced with associated negative environmental impacts. The short period of rainfall in this area, combined with high groundwater withdrawals from irrigation wells, has produced severe aquifer overdraft. In addition, current agricultural practices of applying high loads of fertilizers and pesticides have contaminated regions of the aquifer. The net economic benefit to this agricultural region in the short-term lies with increasing crop yields, which requires large pumping extractions for irrigation as well as high chemical loading. In the longer term, this can produce economic loss due to higher pumping costs (i.e., higher lift requirements), or even loss of the aquifer as a viable source of water. Negative environmental impacts include continued diminishment of groundwater quality, and declining groundwater levels in the basin, which can damage surface water systems that support environmental habitats. The two primary stakeholders or players, the farmers in the irrigation district and the community at large, must find an optimal balance between positive economic benefits and negative environmental impacts. In this paper, game theory was applied to find the optimal solution between the two conflicting objectives among 12 alternative groundwater extraction scenarios. Declines in populations of and reproductive success of wood storks and other wading birds have occurred in the Florida Everglades
over the past several decades. These declines have been concurrent with major changes in the Everglades’ landscape characteristics.
Among the plausible hypotheses that relate to landscape change are the following: (1) general loss of habitat; (2) heavy loss
of specific habitat, namely, short-hydroperiod wetlands that provide high prey availability early in the breeding season;
and (3) an increase in frequency of major drying out of the central slough areas, which can affect prey availability late
in the breeding season.
These three hypotheses were compared using an individual-based model of wood stork (Mycteria americana) reproduction. This model simulated the behavior and energetics of each individual wood stork in a breeding colony on 15-min
time intervals. Changes in water depth and prey availability occurred on daily time steps. Simulation results showed a threshold
response in reproductive success to reduction of wetland heterogeneity. Model comparisons in which (1) only short-hydroperiod
wetlands were removed and (2) wetlands of both long and short hydroperiods were removed showed that, for the same loss of
total area, the specific habitat removal caused a much greater reduction in wood stork reproduction, indicating hypothesis
2 may be a more likely explanation than hypothesis 1. Reduction of initial prey availability in the central slough areas (simulating
frequent drying; hypothesis 3) reduced fledging success by an average of more than 90% in the model. 相似文献

A recent comprehensive review of the characteristics and utilization of copper slags encourages (properly) several applications for this important pyrometallurgical byproduct. However, the review does not include possible environmental effects from these slags. The United Nations Basel Convention on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal characterizes copper compounds that exhibit specified hazard characteristics as hazardous wastes. In 1996, the Convention considered further characterization of these and other compounds and substances. The final characterization of copper slags is as non-hazardous, i.e., exempt from control. This decision was based in part (if not largely) on the data that are presented here. Literature reports were used to accumulate data describing the chemical composition and acid leaching of commercial copper slags from three countries. From these data, average values of chemical composition and their statistical confidence limits (95%) were calculated. The variability of the chemical analyses of three commercial slags produced over 19 or 20 months were statistically analyzed and shown to be small. The concentrations of toxic heavy metals in the slags are low and the frequency distributions of the values are narrow. Most of the data are normally distributed, validating the use of the statistics used and permitting predictions of likely values. The amounts of heavy metals extracted by an aggressive standard acid leach procedure are low and well below the United States. regulatory levels derived from drinking water standards. The results for total composition and leaching illustrate why the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made a regulatory determination that such slags are not hazardous wastes. Later, in 1996, the Basel Convention Technical Working Group concurred and the Parties to the Convention adopted their recommendation. 相似文献

Application of the wilderness travel simulation model to the Appalachian Trail in Vermont 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The wilderness travel simulation model estimates complex recreation use patterns in park and wilderness environments. The model was applied to a section of the Appalachian Trail in Vermont, a linear, long-distance, multiple-access trail system characteristic of the eastern United States. Many portions of the trail, including the study area, are now experiencing high use. The model estimated the average number of trail encounters per party day to be 3.3 and the average number of camp encounters per party night to be 2.3. Other measures of recreation use were also estimated that should prove useful to trail management and administration. Three trail management scenarios were tested, providing several preliminary insights to managers: the desirability of use redistributions as opposed to across-the-board reductions and needed emphasis on spatial use patterns and campsite encounters. Only minor modifications to the program were needed in applying the model to the trail environment and the model functioned accurately according to the validity tests performed. 相似文献

Since the beginning of the 1960s, mass tourism has been the most important menace to the environmental stability of fragile
and vulnerable Mediterranean microinsular systems. The socioeconomic changes introduced by tourism have produced important
variations in the use of resources, including land. The result usually has been an increase in the level of artificiality
of the territory, particularly in coastal areas. The intensity and frequency of change in the use of resources and the induced
changes in the level of artificiality may be used as an estimation of environmental stability. The northern area of Formentera,
Balearic islands, Spain, being the most environmentally important area of the island and simultaneously the most threatened
by mass tourism development, has been chosen as a study case. Forty types of vegetation and land use have been estimated and
mapped in the area. The stability level of each land use type has been estimated, before and after the development of tourism,

This paper claims that participatory approaches to water resource management in New Zealand are highly influenced by how institutional and community actors understand and practise democracy, including indigenous Māori rights under the Treaty of Waitangi. Drawing on case study analysis from a six-year research programme in which the aim was to evaluate existing and new methods for participatory decision-making, we highlight how different but co-existing democratic beliefs and practices, referred to as democratic logics can shape relationships between governance/decision-making bodies and affected communities. One particular case is examined in detail to illustrate how the various “logics” were strengthened, extended and challenged through participatory research methodologies. Our key message is that revealing and articulating existing democratic logics for participation can help promote and facilitate new participatory approaches, as well as increase robustness and community buy-in to local government decision-making. 相似文献

In the environmental conflict that surrounds the sighting of hazardous waste facilities there is usually a volatile mix of disparities in power, expertise and information access as well as differing views on risk, which are all played out amidst commercial arrangements and environmental justice concerns. In recent times, the volatility of this mix has been further compounded by the growing climate of public concern and distrust surrounding scientific developments and technology. While there is no 'quick fix' to the complex conflict that this entails, community information systems (CISs) based on participatory models can help address the outstanding issues of capacity, information access, power inequities and environmental justice. CISs are an effective response to the five crucial elements of a toxic dispute, that is, the dialogue, capacity building, information access, evaluation of hazards and risk, and expertise. This paper will review the role of community accessible information systems in the dispute in Botany over the management and destruction of Orica Australia's stockpile of the persistent organic pollutant, hexachlorobenzene (HCB). This paper explores the hypothesis that contextual environments (media exposure and social exposure) and biospheric value orientation are important antecedents to the attitude-intention-behavior model (
[Ajzen, 2001]
and
[Ajzen, 2002]
) in the context of environmental psychology. Data for this investigation were obtained from a random sample of 2106 (1073 males and 1025 females) high school students in Hong Kong. A path analysis demonstrates that adolescents’ social exposure and media exposure are associated with biospheric value orientation. The biosperhic value orientation is found to mediate between the contextual variables (media exposure and social exposure) and environmental attitude. This environmental attitude, in turn, mediates the relationship between this value orientation and behavioral intention to act environmentally. Results show that both adolescents’ behavioral intention and degree of social exposure are associated with their environmental behavior. Overall, this article provides empirical support for the proposed path model. The article concludes by presenting theoretical and practical implications for future research in environmental psychology. 相似文献

Most North Americans are concerned about the environment and feel that responsibility for its protection lies primarily with government; however, no research to date has examined the influence of the government's approach toward environmental regulation on the motivation of individual citizens. According to self-determination theory, social contexts that support one's autonomy should facilitate self-determined motivation and social contexts that thwart autonomy should lead to non self-determined motivation and a sense of apathy or amotivation. In this study (n = 283), we examined the influence of perceptions of the government's approach toward environmental regulation on motivation toward the environment and frequency of self-reported pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Using structural equation modeling, we tested the hypothesis that frequency of PEB is predicted by motivation toward the environment and that motivation is predicted by the extent to which individuals perceive the government to be autonomy-supportive versus controlling in the implementation of environmental policies. The analysis revealed that perception of government autonomy-support contributed positively to autonomous motivation and negatively to amotivation, while perception of government control was positively related to both controlled motivation and amotivation. As predicted, autonomous motivation was positively, and amotivation was negatively, associated with frequency of PEB. 相似文献

Abstract: We present a simple modular landscape simulation model that is based on a watershed modeling framework in which different sets of processes occurring in a watershed can be simulated separately with different models. The model consists of three loosely coupled submodels: a rainfall‐runoff model (TOPMODEL) for runoff generation in a subwatershed, a nutrient model for estimation of nutrients from nonpoint sources in a subwatershed, and a stream network model for integration of point and nonpoint sources in the routing process. The model performance was evaluated using monitoring data in the watershed of the Patuxent River, a tributary to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, from July 1997 through August 1999. Despite its simplicity, the landscape model predictions of streamflow, and sediment and nutrient loads were as good as or better than those of the Hydrological Simulation Program‐Fortran model, one of the most widely used comprehensive watershed models. The landscape model was applied to predict discharges of water, sediment, silicate, organic carbon, nitrate, ammonium, organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, organic phosphorus, phosphate, and total phosphorus from the Patuxent watershed to its estuary. The predicted annual water discharge to the estuary was very close to the measured annual total in terms of percent errors for both years of the study period (≤2%). The model predictions for loads of nutrients were also good (20‐30%) or very good (<20%) with exceptions of sediment (40%), phosphate (36%), and organic carbon (53%) for Year 1. 相似文献
