The mussel species Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould coexist and hybridize throughout a large area that includes the north coast of Maine and Atlantic Canada. Previous studies provided genetic evidence for limited hybridization between the two species for mussels >15 mm. The present study used two genetic markers (ITS, Glu-5) to examine the genetic composition of early life-history stages by sampling veliger and pediveliger larvae, juveniles (<2.0 to 15.0 mm shell length) and adults (>15 mm shell length) in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, during three consecutive years (1995–1997) to determine if differential mortality limits the relative abundance of hybrids. The relative frequency of the two species and the different hybrid genotypes was similar among the larvae, juveniles and small adult mussels. The double hybrid genotype (F1-like) was the rarest genotype observed. There was no evidence for differential mortality during the early life-history stages, and factors limiting production of hybrids appear to operate before the late larval stage. The observed frequency of hybrids is probably due to a combination of pre- and postzygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms operating early in the mussels life history. M. trossulus dominated the early life-history stages, possibly due to a higher population density and a greater reproductive output than M. edulis. Differential mortality may explain the observed decrease in frequency of M. trossulus and increase in frequency of M. edulis with increasing shell length. A similar frequency of hybrid mussels from larvae to the size class of 55 mm shell length may indicate a rate of mortality intermediate between the two parental species. The M. edulis–M. trossulus hybrid zone appears to be maintained by reproductive isolating mechanisms limiting the production of hybrids and life-history differences that allow the two species to coexist.Communicated by J.P. Efficient delivery of nutrients is necessary for the successful study of aquatic larval nutrition. Conventional artificial food particles for larval shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) have poor water stability and poor nutrient retention or both. We developed a novel food particle type that retained low-molecular weight, water-soluble nutrients (vitamins and glucose) within lipid-wall microcapsules embedded with dietary ingredients in particles of gelled alginate-gelatin. The combination of lipid-wall microcapsules (LWMs) embedded in gelled food particles was termed complex microcapsules (CXMs). Eighty-five percent of 14C-activity associated with encapsulated 14C-glucose was retained by CXMs (after 18 h of suspension in seawater). Bioavailability of CXM-encapsulated molecules was demonstrated by release of encapsulated dye marker into the gut lumen of larval shrimp, and by uptake of 14C from encapsulated 14C-glucose. Minimum ingestion rates, calculated from 14C-uptake for larval shrimp (Mysis-1 through Postlarva-2) fed CXMs, ranged from 48 to 99 g dry wt larva-1 d-1, and were similar to literature values reported for ingestion of live rotifers by penaeid larvae. Complex microcapsules described in this study will be a valuable new tool for studying nutrition of suspension-feeders in that both micro-and macronutrients can be delivered to these animals by one particle type.  相似文献

Marine communities are experiencing unprecedented rates of species homogenization due to the increasing success of invasive species, but little is known about the mechanisms that allow a species to invade and persist in a new habitat. In central California, native (Mytilus trossulus Gould 1850) and invasive (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck 1819) blue mussels and their hybrids co-exist, providing an opportunity to analyze the mechanisms that determine the distributions of these taxa. Spatial and temporal variation in temperature and salinity and the relative frequencies of these mussel taxa were examined between 2000 and 2004 at four sites in San Francisco Bay and four in Monterey Bay, which were chosen for their different positions along inferred estuarine/oceanic gradients in the hybrid zone. Mussels were genetically identified as the parent species or hybrids by amplifying regions of two species-specific loci: the adhesive byssal thread protein (Glu-5′) and the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (ITS 1). The proportion of M. trossulus at the eight hybrid zone sites correlated negatively with average salinity (R 2=0.60) and positively with maximal temperature (R 2≥0.72), a somewhat unexpected result given what is known about the phylogeography of this species. The proportion of M. galloprovincialis showed the opposite pattern. The proportion of hybrids was correlated neither with habitat temperature nor salinity. Genotypes of mussel populations at an additional 13 sites from Coos Bay, Oregon (latitude 43.35°N) to Long Beach, California (latitude 33.72°N), sampled at various intervals between 2000 and 2004, were also determined. This survey confirmed previous reports that the hybrid zone lies between Monterey and the Cape Mendocino region (latitudes 36.63°N–40.5°N). Within Monterey and San Francisco Bays, however, the temporal comparisons (1990s vs. 2000s) revealed abrupt changes in the proportions of the two parent species and their hybrids on annual and decadal time scales. These changes indicate that the blue mussel populations are in a highly dynamic state. The survey also showed that, regardless of habitat, M. trossulus is consistently of smaller average size than either M. galloprovincialis or hybrids.

The barnacle Balanus improvisus and the mussel Mytilus trossulus have been used as biomonitors of the trace metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, Pb, Mn and Ni at five sublittoral sites in the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) between February 2000 and September 2001. The study has established a benchmark against which future biomonitoring programmes will be able to establish changes in local metal pollution, particularly if metal loadings in the river Vistula (draining into the Gulf) alter in the future. The study highlighted differences in trace metal bioavailabilities to both barnacles and mussels, geographically and over time. Accumulated metal concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Pb and Ni, but not Cd or Mn, were correlated in the barnacles and mussels, suggesting that the bioavailabilities of the former metals to the two biomonitors were similar. The barnacles showed greater discriminatory power than the mussels as trace metal biomonitors. Concentrations of trace metals in surficial sediments (<63 m) did not correlate significantly with accumulated metal concentrations in either barnacles or mussels, indicating that sediment metal concentrations are not necessarily good proxy measures of ambient trace metal bioavailabilities to the local coastal filter feeders.Communicated by J.P. The mussels Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould are found sympatrically in most areas of Newfoundland, with a low frequency of hybrids. To assess the potential for reproductive isolation, we sampled mussels from three sites in an eastern Newfoundland Bay from May–October 1996 to determine if there were differences in the reproductive cycles of the two species and their natural hybrids. In mussels with sheil lengths of 38–42 mm, males and females with mature gametes were dominant in June for M. edulis and hybrids, while M. trossulus showed a lower frequency of individuals with mature gametes. M. trossulus and hybrids spawned over a prolonged period (from late spring to early autumn) compared with most M. edulis individuals that spawned over a period of 2–3 weeks in July. This asynchrony in spawning activity between the two species may partially explain the low frequency of hybrids found in previous studies of these mussel populations. Female and male hybrids between M. edulis and M. trossulus showed normal gonad development, ripening and spawning, providing an opportunity for the introgression of genes between the two species. M. trossulus had a higher reproductive output than M. edulis of similar shell length, while hybrids showed intermediate values of reproductive output. M. trossulus females produced smaller eggs than either M. edulis or hybrids. Differences in reproductive traits may partially explain the maintenance of the mussel hybrid zone in Newfoundland. Little is known of the dietary requirements of marine suspension-feeders, mainly due to difficulties in preparing and delivering microparticulate diets to animals living in an aquatic environment. The food particles must be stable in seawater and digestible by the consumer. A laboratory method for preparing cross-linked, protein-walled capsules is described in this study as a means of delivering dietary protein to marine suspension-feeders such as the oyster Crassostrea gigas. Leakage of 14C-labelled protein from capsules suspended in seawater for 24 h was reduced to less than 5% by the use of the trifunctional cross-linking agent 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride in wall formation. Invitro experiments indicated that capsules were susceptible to digestion by proteases and by style extracts of oysters. Oysters fed encapsulated 14C-labelled protein absorbed 14C with an efficiency of 40.2±5.0% (±1 SE). Biochemical fractionation of capsule-fed oysters indicated breakdown of ingested 14C-protein into material that was soluble in 7% trichloroacetic acid. Cross-linked, protein-walled capsules can be used successfully to deliver dietary protein to the oyster C. gigas.  相似文献

Frequencies of mitochondrial haplotypes characteristic of native Mytilus trossulus and introduced M. galloprovincialis were determined in populations along the west coast of North America from San Diego, California, to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. We also identified the haplotypes of mussels cultured from larvae arriving in Coos Bay, Oregon, during 1988–1990 from sites in Japan in the seawater ballast of ocean-going ships. All mussels from ballast-water samples were M. galloprovincialis. We found that sampled populations north of San Francisco Bay, including Coos Bay, were entirely composed of mussels with the M. trossulus haplotype, while haplotypes of both species were present in all sites in and south of San Francisco Bay. The presence of M. trossulus in southern sites is contrary to evidence from allozyme studies, and we suggest that mtDNA introgression from M. trossulus to M. galloprovincialis may explain this discordance. This study demonstrates that, despite continued transport and release, M. galloprovincialis has not become established in northern sites. Failure to invade the north coast of North America may reflect environmental unsuitability for M. galloprovincialis. However, invasion success may be probabilistic, and the continuing release of M. galloprovincialis larvae may foreshadow a future successful invasion.  相似文献

Electrochemical quantitation of metallothionin-like proteins (MLP) in mussels was based on the determination of their constituent cysteinyl residues according to Brdika's catalytic reaction. Calibration was performed by an internal MLP standard isolated from the digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis for which protein concentration had been estimated by Bradford's spectrophotometric method. For that purpose three metal-binding proteins [MLP-I, MLP-II and Cu-BP (binding protein)] were separated by DEAE-Sephadex A-25 chromatography from the digestive gland of mussels previously exposed to Cd. The most negatively changed MLP-II fraction was characterized by the fact that it contained the largest amount of both total metal and sulphydryl (-SH) content per mass of protein, although this was approximately two times lower than the-SH level of commercially available MT from rabbit liver. Exposure of mussels to a relatively low level of cadmium (0.2 g Cd l-1) added into the seawater either by itself or as a mixture with other metals (2 g Cu l-1 and 1.6 g Pb l-1) resulted in a measurable level of MLP induction within 14 d in comparison to the control specimens. The effect of the metal mixture on MLP synthesis appears to be less than additive, suggesting a competitive interaction between metal ions for uptake and binding sites as well as differing potentials for MLP induction. Variations in the MLP content observed in the digestive gland of mussels seasonally collected from the same location are in the range 2.1±0.4 mg g-1 on a wet weight basis. The methodological and conceptual aspects of the application of MLP induction in the Mytilus sp. as a biomarker in seawater trace metal monitoring are critically evaluated.  相似文献

The presence and characteristics of a membrane-bound adenylate cyclase from Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk posterior adductor muscle have been investigated. The enzyme has a Michaelis constant (K m) of 0.38 mM at 20°C and requires divalent cations (Mg2+/Mn2+) for its activity. Optimal GTP concentrations are between 10-5 and 10-4 M. The non-hydrolizable GTP-analogues GMPpNHp and GTPS increase the activity of the enzyme four- to ten-fold. Sodium fluoride stimulates the enzymatic activity seven- to eight-fold. Forskolin increases the enzymatic activity two- to three-fold. Serotonin stimulates the adenylate cyclase activity in a dose-dependent manner. These experiments were performed with mussels collected from the estuary of Muros, Spain, in 1990.  相似文献

Free amino acid (FAA) levels were measured from May through October 1991 in gill tissues of two groups of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin), one transferred from a low salinity field site (8) to a field site of high salinity (20) and high Perkinsus marinus (Mackin, Owen, and Collier) prevalence, the other kept at the low salinity field site. Within 24 h, glycine levels in the oysters transferred to high salinity increased 8-fold, taurine concentrations doubled and the total FAA pool rose from 150 mol g–1 dry wt to 400 mol g–1 dry wt. Taurine levels reached a plateau within 20 d after transfer to high salinity and remained at that level until P. marinus infections were detected 85 d after transfer. Taurine and glycine levels declined by 40% in the high salinity population as infection intensity increased between 70 and 105 d. Total FAA declined by approximately 33% over this period. The oysters kept at low salinity were not infected and continued to grow while the infected high salinity oysters showed no increase in shell length after Day 85. FAA levels in the low salinity group remained relatively constant throughout the experiment except for an initial rise triggered by an increase in ambient salinity from 8 to 12. The results suggest that salinity tolerance mechanisms in C. virginica may be impaired by P. marinus infection.  相似文献

Mussels, Mytilus edulis planulatus, were collected from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia, in February 1984, to test the assumption that they are integrators of cadmium pollution. Groups of mussels were subjected to the same average dose of cadmium (21 g l-1), administered according to different dosing regimes over 4 wk (Regimes 1, 2, 3, 5); other groups received twice the average dose (42 g l-1) in half the time (Regime 4). During each regime, the mussels were exposed to the different cadmium concentrations for one week at each concentration. Nominally, the regimes were: (1) 36 g (Wk 1) to 26 g (Wk 2) to 16 g (Wk 3) to 6 g (Wk 4) Cd l-1; (2) 6 to 16 to 26 to 36 g Cd l-1; (3) 21 to 21 to 21 to 21 g Cd l-1; (4) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1; (5) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1 to background (<0.5 g) to background. Differences in cadmium accumulation by mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 were not statistically significant, nor were differences in accumulation between mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. However, mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 had accumulated significantly more cadmium than had mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. Accumulation by mussels from Regime 5 was not significantly different from that by mussels from any of the other regimes. These results suggest that, at least for cadmium, the assumption that mussels are integrators of pollution should be treated with caution. They also have implications with regard to the quantitative biological monitoring of pollution. For example, even in a carefully controlled monitoring program, using mussels of standard size and condition, significant differences in cadmium content between mussels need not indicate exposure to different levels of contamination. Rather, these differences could reflect differences in the regime by which the contamination was received.  相似文献

Along the west coast of North America, the invasive mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a native congener M. trossulus overlap in range and compete for habitat in an extensive hybrid zone along central California. The two species have been shown to exhibit differential abiotic tolerances in laboratory studies, yet little is known about how such tolerances affect spatial and temporal patterns of geographic distribution, particularly in areas of competition. We examined distributions of the two congeners and their hybrids in neighboring intertidal and subtidal habitats in Bodega Bay, CA over 2 years, and compared shell length and seasonal ubiquitin (Ub) conjugates to estimate protein turnover and physiological stress for the species at each site. The two species were spatially segregated, with M. galloprovincialis dominating the subtidal habitat, and M. trossulus constituting a majority of the intertidal mussel population. Hybrid individuals appeared in low numbers at both sites. For each habitat, there was no statistical difference between shell lengths of M. galloprovincialis and hybrids but M. trossulus mussels were statistically smaller than the other two. In regards to physiological performance, ubiquitin conjugate values showed different seasonal cycles for the two species, suggesting different periods of peak environmental stress. The highest levels of Ub-conjugated proteins were observed in winter for M. galloprovincialis and in summer for M. trossulus, consistent with the respective range edges for their distributions since Bodega Bay is near the northern range edge of the invader and the southern edge of the native species. These findings suggest that future assessments of Mytilus populations along the California coast may need to consider vertical distributions and seasonal cycles as part of monitoring and research activities.  相似文献

Since Mytilus edulis L. has very few predators and competitors for space, it has become a biomass dominant in the Baltic proper covering hard substrates from the water surface to more than 30 m depth. In order to investigate the factors controlling size and production in a Baltic M. edulis population, growth was studied by the analysis of annual growth rings, measurements of caged individuals and the analysis of size classes in the population, and on settlement ropes. The total number of mussels in a representative mussel bed at 4 m depth varied between 36 000 and 158 000 ind · m-2 during the year, mainly due to variations in very small mussels (<2 mm), whereas the abundance of mussels 2mm was rather constant between about 17 000 and 28 000 ind · m-2. Maximum numbes of mussels < 2 mm, amounting to 132 000 ind · m-2, were found after settlement in summer, but still half a year later in spring, 65 000 ind · m-2 < 2 mm were registered, due to very strong intraspecific competition for food and space leading to the competitive suppression of small individuals and large variations in growth rates. Due to the special size-structure of the population only the analysis of annual growth rings could be used to estimate natural shell growth. From being very low in the smallest mussels, growth was linear between about 2–10 yr of age, corresponding to about 3–20 mm length, after which it decreased with a L=32 mm. Over the linear interval, growth in the populations from 3–6 m and 10–15m depth was 3.1 and 2.2 mm · yr-1, respectively. Meat growth showed strong annual variations mainly due to gonad production. Starving mussels could, however, while utilizing energy reserves, survive losses of up to 78% of their meat biomass. This ability of M. edulis to respire away its own biomass and its apparent tolerance of weight loss has important implication. It will drastically reduce the energy flow to destruents from mussels dying naturally, which is of special significance in the Baltic, where predators and scavengers are scarce. It enables the mussels to endure bad food conditions and buffer strong seasonal variations in food abundance, maintaining the strongly food-and space-limited Baltic M. edulis population at the carrying capacity of the area.  相似文献

Previous research on gametic incompatibility in marine invertebrates suggests that for highly dispersive marine invertebrate species, barriers to fertilization among closely related taxa are often incomplete and sometimes asymmetric. The nature of these barriers can dramatically affect the patterns of gene flow and genetic differentiation between species, and thus speciation. Blue mussels, in the genus Mytilus, are genetically distinct in allopatry yet hybrids are present wherever any two species within the group co-occur. The present study sampled M. edulis (L.) and M. trossulus (Gould) in May and June 2001 from the East Bay section of Cobscook Bay, Maine, USA (latitude 44°56′30″N; longitude 67°07′50″W), where the two species are sympatric. Gamete incompatibility was investigated in a series of laboratory fertilizations carried out in July 2001. The proportion of fertilized eggs typically exceeded 80% at sperm concentrations of 103–104 ml?1 among intraspecific matings (n=18), but was <30% even at sperm concentrations in excess of 105–106 ml?1 for interspecific matings (n=13). Further analysis indicated that approximately 100- to 700-fold higher sperm concentrations were required to achieve 20% fertilization in interspecific matings relative to intraspecific matings, indicating strong barriers to interspecific fertilization. The proportion of fertilized eggs did not follow this general pattern in all matings, however. The eggs from two (out of five) M. edulis females were almost as receptive to M. trossulus sperm as they were to M. edulis sperm. In contrast, the eggs from all M. trossulus females (n=3) were unreceptive to M. edulis sperm, suggesting that fertilization barriers between these species may be asymmetric. Given the experimental design employed in this study, the results are also consistent with a strong maternal or egg effect on the level of interspecific gamete compatibility in M. edulis.  相似文献

Blue mussels in the genus Mytilus first arrived in the Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific during the Pliocene, following the opening of the Bering Strait. Repeated periods of glaciation throughout the Pleistocene led to re-isolation of the two ocean basins and the allopatric divergence of Mytilus edulis in the Atlantic and M. trossulus in the Pacific. Mytilus trossulus has subsequently colonized the northwest Atlantic (NW Atlantic) so that the two species are presently sympatric and hybridize throughout much of the Canadian Maritimes and the Gulf of Maine. To estimate when M. trossulus arrived in the NW Atlantic, we have examined sequence variation within a portion of the female mtDNA lineage large untranslated region (F-LUR) for 156 mussels sampled from three Pacific and eleven Atlantic populations of M. trossulus. Although we found no evidence of reciprocal monophyly for Pacific and NW Atlantic M. trossulus, limited gene flow between ocean basins has led to the divergence of unique sequence clades within each ocean basin. In contrast, relative genetic homogeneity indicates high levels of gene flow within each basin. Coalescence-based analysis of the F-LUR sequences suggests that M. trossulus recolonized the NW Atlantic from the northeast Pacific subsequent to a demographic expansion in the Pacific that occurred ~96,000 years before present (ybp). Estimates of timing of divergence for Pacific and NW Atlantic populations and the time since expansion among NW Atlantic sequence clades indicate that M. trossulus arrived in the NW Atlantic more recently, between 20,000 and 46,000 ybp. Given that these estimates overlap with the dates of peak ice in the NW Atlantic during the last glacial maximum (LGM, ~18,000–21,000 ybp), we suggest that colonization of the NW Atlantic by M. trossulus occurred during, but more likely just subsequent to, the LGM and was followed by rapid temporal and spatial expansion in the region.  相似文献

The adhesive protein allele of mussels collected at 13 points in Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction using a set of primers which amplifies a part of the nonrepetitive region of the adhesive protein gene. While most mussels exhibited a 126 bp fragment, characteristic of the pure Mytilus galloprovincialis, 55 of 64 mussels sampled at Hiura and 1 of 14 mussels at Hakodate Port exhibited 168 and 126 bp fragments. Sequence analysis of the two fragments indicated that the 168 and 126 bp fragments are almost identical to previously reported sequences in M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis, respectively. Since the frequency of heterozygous individuals in Hiura is very high, it is unlikely that they are simple hybrids. Common mussels, Mytilus edulis (shell length 19 to 21 mm, average dry weight 30 mg) were maintained for 6 weeks in sea water containing different concentrations of lead (0.005 to 5 mg · l-1). The lead concentration in the mussels' whole soft parts was analysed at different times during the experiment. A constant rate of lead uptake, linearly dependent on the lead concentration of the medium, was observed. Thus, the temporal change of the concentration factor is also linear (regression coefficient 149.9 daily). Rate of lead loss, measured after transferring the mussels into natural sea water, is linearly dependent on the original lead concentration in the soft parts. Rates of uptake and loss in large mussels (shell length 45 to 55 mm, average dry weight 750 mg) are less than those in small mussels (shell length 19 to 21 mm, average dry weight 30 mg). During a much more extended experimental period, adjustment to a steady state is expected to occur; rates of lead uptake and loss are then non-linear. Lead uptake by individual organs (kidney, gills, adductor muscle, digestive gland, foot, mantle with gonads) of large M. edulis (shell length 45 to 55 mm, average dry weight 750 mg) was analysed in 2 test series. In the test series medium, the mussels were kept in a seawater medium containing 0.01 mg. Pb.l-1. In the test series food, the mussels were kept in natural sea water but fed with the green algae Dunaliella marina containing lead (approximately 600 g.g-1 dry weight). The lead quantity given per mussel per day was about 2 g in both test series. Within 35 days, the mussels of test series medium took up 29% of the total amount of lead given, those of test series food took up 23.5%. In all organs, lead concentration increased, but rates of uptake differed; the kidney displayed by far the highest rate of uptake. With these physiological properties M. edulis is an ideal indicator organism for lead pollution in the marine environment. Oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and epoxide-conjugation capacities were examined from mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, collected from a clean site at the entrance to Arcachon Bay (south-west France) in 1984, using subcellular preparations from whole bodies and digestive glands. The existence of low-cytochrome P-450-dependent oxygenase activities [cytochrome P-450 content, NADPH cytochrome c reductase and benzopyrene monooxygenase (BaPMO) activities] was confirmed, as well as the presence of a comparatively important capacity for epoxide conjugation [epoxide hydrolase (EH), glutathione S epoxide-transferase (GST) activities and total cytosolic-glutathione content]. The optimal incubation temperatures for the individual in vitro enzyme activities in the mussel (25°C for BaPMO, 31°C for EH and GST) were lower than that required for optimal mammalian enzyme activities. Mytilus trossulus Gould and M. edulis L. coexist in mixed populations in Atlantic Canadian waters. Although there is evidence that the two species hybridize in natural populations and that hybrids produce progeny through backcrosses, no study of the microgeographic distribution of the two forms and their hybrids has been made. Here we examine subtidal samples of mussels taken in July 1997 from two locations in eastern Newfoundland (Canada) and from wave-exposed and protected environments within each location. Shell lengths ranged from 15 to about 90 mm. Mussels were classified as pure forms or hybrids (F1, F2 and from backcrosses) based on four diagnostic markers, two allozyme loci (Mpi and Est-D) and two nuclear PCR-based DNA markers (ITS and Glu-5). In addition, a PCR-based mtDNA marker (COIII) was used to characterize the distribution of mtDNA mitotypes among pure and hybrid individuals. There were differences in the proportions of pure M. edulis and M. trossulus between sites and between environments at one location. M. trossulus was the predominant species at one of the two exposed sites. In all four samples, M. trossulus was also the predominant form among small individuals. The frequency of hybrids was 26% overall and did not differ among samples. Hybrids consisted mostly of backcrosses that were M. trossulus-biased among small mussels and M. edulis-biased among large ones. We conclude that both intrinsic genetic factors and extrinsic environmental factors influence the relative frequency of M. edulis, M. trossulus and their hybrids. Regression analysis on data collected from Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, Australia in 1979 shows that there is a significant equilibrium relationship between total recoverable lead in seawater and its concentrations in the mussel Mytilus edulis (P<0.001). The concentration of lead in seawater should not exceed 1.27 g l-1 if the mussel is not to reach a lead concentration of 2.5 mg kg-1 wet weight, a value frequently used as a food standard for human consumption. When a lead value of 2.5 mg kg-1 wet weight is reached, the concentration factor by mussels for lead from seawater is 1969. The critical value of 1.27 g l-1 could be used as a marine water-quality criterion for lead in waters where mussels are harvested.  相似文献
