Capillary pressure–saturation-relative permeability relationships (Pc–Sw–Kr) are functions of importance in modeling and simulations of the hydrodynamics of two-phase flow in porous media. These relationships are found to be affected by porous medium and fluid properties but the manner in which they are affected is a topic of intense discussion. For example, reported trends in fluid viscosity and boundary conditions effects have been found to be contrary to each other in different studies. In this work, we determine the dependency of dynamic Kr–Sw relationships (averaged data) on domain scale in addition to investigating the effects of fluid viscosity and boundary pressure using silicone oil (i.e. 200 and 1000 cSt) and water as the respective non-wetting and wetting fluids with a view to eliminating some of the uncertainties reported in the literature. Water relative permeability, Krw, was found to increase with increasing wetting phase saturation but decreases with the increase in viscosity ratio. On the other hand, the oil relative permeability, Krnw, was found to increase with the increasing non-wetting phase saturation in addition to the increase in viscosity ratio. Also, it was found that with the increasing boundary pressure Krw decreases while Krnw increases. The influence of scale on relative permeability was slightly indicated in the non-wetting phase with Krnw decreasing as domain size increases. Effect of measurement location on dynamic relative permeability was explored which is rarely found in the literature. Comparison was also made between Kr–Sw relationships obtained under static and dynamic condition. Finally, mobility ratio (m) and dynamic coefficient (τ) were plotted as a function of water saturation (Sw), which showed that m decreases as τ increases at a given saturation, or vice versa.  相似文献

There has been little evaluation of anecdotal sightings as a means to confirm new incursions of invasive species. This paper explores the potential for equivocal information communicated by the media to account for patterns of anecdotal reports. In 2001, it was widely reported that red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) had been deliberately released in the island state of Tasmania (Australia), although this claim was later revealed to be baseless. Regardless, by 2013 a total of 3153 anecdotal fox sightings had been reported by members of the public, which implied their distribution was wide. For each month in 2001–2003, we defined a monthly media index (MMI) of fox‐related media coverage, an index of their relative seasonal abundance (abundance), and a factor denoting claims of fox evidence (claimed evidence) regardless of its evidentiary quality. We fitted a generalized linear model with Poisson error for monthly totals of anecdotal sightings with factors of year and claimed evidence and covariates of MMI, abundance, and hours of darkness. The collective effect of psychological factors (MMI, claimed evidence, and year) relative to biophysical factors (photoperiod and abundance) was highly significant (χ2 = 122.1, df = 6, p < 0.0001), whereas anticipated changes in abundance had no significant influence on reported sightings (p = 0.15). An annual index of fox media from 2001 to 2010 was strongly associated with the yearly tally of anecdotal sightings (p = 0.018). The odds ratio of sightings ranked as reliable by the fox eradication program in any year decreased exponentially at a rate of 0.00643 as the total number of sightings increased (p < 0.0001) and was indicative of an observer‐expectancy bias. Our results suggest anecdotal sightings are highly susceptible to cognitive biases and when used to qualify and quantify species presence can contribute to flawed risk assessments.  相似文献

With the enhancement of human activities which influence the physical and chemical integrity of ecosystem, it was bound to increase ecological risk to the ecosystem, and the risk assessment of small scale, single pollutant, or only on water quality have been not satisfied the demand of sustainable development of basin water environment. Based on the response relationship between environmental flow requirements guarantee ratio (GEF) and river ecological risk index (ERI), the Sediment Quality Guideline Quotient index (SQG-Q), and the Biotic Index (BI), we construct a new comprehensive ecological risk index (CERI) to evaluate the ecological risk of Luanhe River, China. According to the response relationship between GEF and ERI, upper and lower reaches of Luanhe River (Goutaizi to Hanjiaying) were at moderate risk level (0.41 < ERI < 0.56) in dry season, and all sites were at low risk level (ERI < 0.40) in wet season; considering the contribution of heavy metals contamination in the SQG-Q, the Luanhe River was the most influenced by higher levels of heavy metals in dry season and wet season; when this index was applied to the PAHs levels, only 30 and 20% of the sampling sites appeared to be moderately impacted (0.1 < SQG-Q PAHs < 0.5) by the PAHs in dry season and wet season, respectively. The results of BI showed that half of the sites appeared to be at moderately polluted level (50% of the sites, 0.25 < BI < 0.32) and heavily polluted level (Zhangbaiwan, BI = 0.36) in dry season, and 40% of the sites appeared to be at moderately polluted level (0.26 < BI < 0.29) in wet season. The CERI showed that 70 and 30% of the sites were at moderate risk level in dry season (0.25 < CERI < 0.36) and wet season (0.26 < CERI < 0.29), respectively. The results could give insight into risk assessment of water environment and decision-making for water source security.

Drag coefficient has been commonly used as a quantifying parameter to represent the vegetative drag, i.e., resistance to the flow by vegetation. In this study, the measured data on the drag coefficient for rigid vegetation in subcritical open-channel flow reported in previous studies are collected and preprocessed for multi-parameter analysis. The effect of Froude number (Fr) on the drag coefficient for rigid vegetation in subcritical flow cannot be ignored, especially when \(Fr < 0.12\). The drag coefficient is observed to exponentially decrease with the stem Reynolds number (R d ) and logarithmically decreased with the vegetation density (λ) when \(0.012 < \lambda < 0.12\). The relative submergence (h * ) has a significant effect on the drag coefficient, and a positive logarithmic relationship is summarized. A simplified three-stage empirical formula is obtained based on the divisions of Fr. Laboratory tests (with \(Fr < 0.02\)) prove that the present empirical model has higher precision compared with existing models.  相似文献

A new application of the diacetyl monoxime method for the determination of dissolved urea in seawater is presented, based on the Alpkem autoanalyzer (OI, Analytical). This system has several advantages over automated methods previously described in the literature. The urea cartridge can be easily built using nut/ferrule connections, and the external thermostatic bath is not required. The system is set up to operate at low urea concentrations (0–3 µM urea), but it is linear up to 100 µM urea. The sample volume needed for analysis is 0.4 ml, and the rate of analysis is 25 samples h–1. The precision of analysis (CV) of seawater samples is 2.1% at 0.50 µM urea, and the detection limit is 0.02 µM urea. The interference on the colorimetric measurement due to formation of Brij-35 aggregate in strongly acidic media was eliminated by substituting this wetting agent with hexadecyl–trimethyl–ammonium bromide; thus, this method is suitable for other autoanalyzer technologies that use small-diameter transmission tubes and small-sized spectrophotometric flowcells.Communicated by R. Since the construction of the Gezhouba Dam in the 1980s, the number of Chinese sturgeon in the Yangtze River has been rapidly declining. The Gezhouba Dam has cutoff the migration path of these sturgeon, resulting in an overall reduction of suitable sturgeon habitat. This paper describes a habitat suitability index model that is used to evaluate the impacts of the Gezhouba Dam and Three Gorges Project on Chinese sturgeon spawning sites. Based on research concerning the reproduction characteristics of Chinese sturgeon, ten major ecological factors that influence reproduction were analyzed, including: water temperature, velocity, water depth, substrate, suspended sediment concentration, and the amount of egg predatory fish. The suitability index (SI) curves based on these ten ecological factors were obtained, and a habitat suitability function was developed. A two-dimensional mathematical model was also created to simulate and predict physical habitat situation (such as hydraulic, sediment, and substrate) of the Chinese sturgeon. By coupling the habitat suitability function and a two-dimensional mathematical model, a habitat suitability index model for Chinese sturgeon was established. The habitat suitability index model was validated by comparing measured data with predictions from the model. These comparisons showed that the computed results agreed well with the measured results, and the high calculated habitat suitability index (HSI) corresponded to high measured quantity of eggs per unit (1000 m3) discharge (CPUEd). The calculated habitat suitability index for Chinese sturgeon also showed that the habitat suitability index was better in 1999, before the impoundment of the Three Gorges Project, compared with the habitat suitability in 2003. Simulation results of different discharges from Gezhouba Dam predicted that flow discharges between 10,000 and 30,000 m3/s were most suitable for sturgeon spawning.  相似文献

The marine flagellate Dunaliella marina responds to hypotonic media in the same way as animal cells: an initial phase of osmotic swelling occurs, followed by a second, more prolonged phase of cell shrinkage — the volume-regulation phase. D. marina also volume-regulates in hypertonic media. This does not usually occur in animal cells exposed to normal concentrations of K+. Copper concentrations of 2 ppm and higher inhibit regulation of cell volume in D. marina transferred to hypotonic media. This is probably due to reduced cell-membrane permeability to K+ and/or Cl- and not to an interference with the Na+/K+ exchange pump. These findings suggest that volume regulation is functionally independent of the Na+/K+ exchange pump. The method described herein appears to be a suitable biotest for pollutants, providing specific information on their effects on the permeability of cell membrane.  相似文献

In age-classified population models where all parameters are known, the generation time and growth rate are calculated in a straightforward manner. For many populations, some parameters, such as juvenile survival, are difficult to estimate accurately. In a simplified population model where fecundity and survival are constant from the onset of breeding, it is known that generation time may be calculated given only adult survival, age at first reproduction, and the population growth rate. However, the assumption of constant fecundity from the onset of breeding does not hold for many populations. An extended population model allows calculation of generation time with the additional knowledge of the ratio of age-specific fecundities compared to a maximum fecundity rate. When these relative fecundities are unknown, an ad hoc adjustment to the simplified model performs well.When the study population is in an ideal environment, the optimal generation time and maximum growth rate are linked, and both may be approximated knowing only adult survival, age at first reproduction, and the relative fecundities. The maximum growth rate has important conservation implications, and calculating it correctly is therefore important. Improper use of the simplified population model to calculate the maximum growth rate, combined with a simple decision rule, leads to an average overharvest of 36%, and >60% for three of six bird species studied, compared to the full population model. By comparison, using the approximation from the extended or adjusted models results in average overharvests of only 8% (extended model) and 5% (adjusted model), and <50% for all six species (either model).  相似文献

As a tool for management, query, visualization and analysis of spatially referred information, GIS has been recognized as a method to aid the modeling of diffuse pollution and visualize the results in a spatial context. A common question in integrating diffuse pollution models and GIS is to choose a suitable coupling approach, in which the feature of diffuse pollution models should be taken into account. In this paper, we report on our experience in coupling a distributed diffuse pollution model with a GIS. A prototype of fully integrated system is developed in this paper. This system has high flexibility, extendibility and great data management efficiency. Differences in applicability of loose coupling, tight coupling and fully integrated approaches are addressed. It is concluded that the fully integrated approach can avoid tanglesome data exchange and routine execution and more robust than loose and tight coupling approaches and is suitable for distributed diffuse pollution modes.  相似文献

The brittle stars Amphiura filiformis (Müller) and Ophiura albida (Forbes) were exposed to different oxygen saturations (100, 10, 5, 3, and <1% oxygen saturation) and to physiological anoxia (<1% oxygen saturation) at different total sulfide concentrations (0, 2, 20, 200 μM). The mortality was followed during experiments and the median survival time (LT50) was determined. The infaunal A. filiformis had a significantly higher tolerance to both hypoxia and sulfide than did the epibenthic O. albida. After exposure to 10% oxygen saturation for a month, only 2.0% A. filiformis and 0% O. albida were dead. In oxygen saturations <1% A. filiformis and O. albida had a LT50 of 7.5 and 2.5 d, respectively. The presence of even very small concentrations of sulfide decreased the survival significantly. Developing tools to predict the location of new biological invasions is essential if exotic species are to be controlled before they become widespread. Currently, alpine areas in Australia are largely free of exotic plant species but face increasing pressure from invasive species due to global warming and intensified human use. To predict the potential spread of highly invasive orange hawkweed (Hieracium aurantiacum) from existing founder populations on the Bogong High Plains in southern Australia, we developed an expert-based, spatially explicit, dispersal-constrained, habitat suitability model. The model combines a habitat suitability index, developed from disturbance, site wetness, and vegetation community parameters, with a phenomenological dispersal kernel that uses wind direction and observed dispersal distances. After generating risk maps that defined the relative suitability of H. aurantiacum establishment across the study area, we intensively searched several locations to evaluate the model. The highest relative suitability for H. aurantiacum establishment was southeast from the initial infestations. Native tussock grasslands and disturbed areas had high suitability for H. aurantiacum establishment. Extensive field searches failed to detect new populations. Time-step evaluation using the location of populations known in 1998-2000, accurately assigned high relative suitability for locations where H. aurantiacum had established post-2003 (AUC [area under curve] = 0.855 +/- 0.035). This suggests our model has good predictive power and will improve the ability to detect populations and prioritize areas for ongoing monitoring.  相似文献

Along the Pacific Northwest coast, much of the estuarine habitat has been lost over the last century to agricultural land use, residential and commercial development, and transportation corridors. As a result, many of the ecological processes and functions have been disrupted. To protect and improve these coastal habitats that are vital to aquatic species, many projects are currently underway to restore estuarine and coastal ecosystems through dike breaches, setbacks, and removals. Understanding site-specific information on physical processes is critical for improving the success of such restoration actions. In this study, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate estuarine processes in the Stillaguamish River estuary, where restoration of a 160-acre parcel through dike setback has been proposed. The model was calibrated to observed tide, current, and salinity data for existing conditions and applied to simulate the hydrodynamic responses to two restoration alternatives. Model results were then combined with biophysical data to predict habitat responses within the restoration footprint. Results showed that the proposed dike removal would result in desired tidal flushing and conditions that would support four habitat types on the restoration footprint. At the estuary scale, restoration would substantially increase the proportion of area flushed with freshwater (<5 ppt) at flood tide. Potential implications of predicted changes in salinity and flow dynamics are discussed relative to the distribution of tidal marsh habitat.  相似文献

There is concern that overfishing may lead to a proliferation of jellyfish through a process known as fishing down the food web. However, there has been no global synthesis of patterns of gelatinous zooplankton biomass (GZB), an important first step in determining any future trends. A meta-analysis of epipelagic-GZB patterns was undertaken, encompassing 58 locations on a global scale, and spanning the years 1967–2009. Epipelagic-GZB decreased strongly with increasing total water column depth (r 2 = 0.543, p < 0.001, n = 58): in shallow (<50 m) coastal waters, epipelagic-GZB was typically 742× the levels in deep ocean (>2,000 m) sites. However, the ratio of GZB to primary productivity showed high values across a range of depths, i.e. this measure of the relative abundance of gelatinous zooplankton did not co-vary with depth.  相似文献

This study aims at comparing the zooplankton abundance/biomass of two South African estuaries affected to a different degree by sewage pollution. In particular the hypothesis that microzooplankton may increase relative to mesozooplankton, as eutrophication increases, is tested for the first time in African estuaries. The survey was carried out during a whole-year cycle, including both open and closed phases. Results show that zooplankton abundance and biomass are higher in the Mdloti than in the Mhlanga, during both the closed (U=1, P<0.001, U=16, P<0.001) and the open phase (U=101, P<0.05, U=88, P<0.01). There were no significant differences in abundance/biomass between the different reaches of each estuary, during either their open or closed phase (1-way ANOVA, P>0.05). The different levels of dominance of the calanoid copepod Pseudodiaptomus hessei, which accounted for 53–64 and 86–97% of the total abundance in the Mdloti and the Mhlanga, respectively, suggests a shift in the zooplankton community structure. There was a lower microzooplankton abundance/biomass contribution to the total zooplankton in the Mhlanga (59.6–15.8%), compared to the Mdloti (99.1–96.5%). The highest microzooplankton contribution in the Mdloti was observed during the closed phase, while in the Mhlanga this occurred during the open phase. This suggests that eutrophication in the Mhlanga may impact negatively on the microzooplankton community. On the other hand the less affected Mdloti exhibits an opposite trend with an increased microzooplankton component.  相似文献

This paper proposes a green finance index that may help policymakers and investors take more favorable actions based on the development of green finance. After analysis and organization of the development process of green finance and related green finance and index concepts, this paper uses the improved fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to construct a measurement model suitable for measuring the development level of green finance based on the principle of fuzzy mathematics. The index weight adopts the entropy method and improved Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) joint determination. At the same time, using the relevant statistical indicators of China's green credit from 2011 to 2019, and using the constructed model, the level of China's green finance development during this period was evaluated. Finally, the obtained data and classical gray model methods were used to predict China's green development level from 2020 to 2024. The research results show that: This model is a good measure of the level of development of green finance, and China's green finance index has generally shown a rapid growth trend over the past nine years, with the fastest growth rate between 2013 and 2014. From the perspective of the weight of each index affecting the green financial index, the weight of new energy, green transportation projects and new energy vehicles ranked in the top three, and the impact of these three indexes on China's green financial index is significant. In the future, China's green financial development level will continue to improve.

Recent investigations have shown that ferrate(VI) salts oxidize organic compounds in aqueous phases with fast reaction from seconds to minutes and poor selectivity. Few studies have used ferrate(VI) in organic phases. The main issues are the poor solubility of K2FeO4 in common organic solvents and the low reaction rate. Therefore the interests to date are focused on finding a more effective catalyst in the organic oxidation. Up to now no work has been reported on acids as catalysis for the oxidative abilities of K2FeO4 in organic phases. Here we present a novel procedure for oxidizing benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without an overoxidation to benzoic acid by K2FeO4 in an organic phase. Using benzyl alcohol as a model, the catalytic activity of various acid solutions was measured. We found that the reactivity of K2FeO4 to the oxidation of benzyl alcohol can be highly enhanced by addition of a small amount of acid solution at room temperature. The catalytic ability of acid solutions follows the order acetic acid < oxalic acid < phosphomolybdic acid < phosphotungstic acid. On the basis of a theoretical analysis, a reaction mechanism is proposed. This method provides a new green way for oxidizing organic substances by K2FeO4 in nonaqueous media.  相似文献

Benthic organisms can significantly alter the physical properties of marine sediments, but it has hitherto been difficult to assess and quantify the effects of bioturbation. In situ geophysical techniques offer new methods for measuring these effects: measurement of acoustic shear-wave velocity and electrical resistivity allows nondestructive assessment of the properties of the grain framework and pore-fluid matrix, respectively, of the seabed sediment. The influence of burrowing invertebrates on the structural properties of sandy sediments at intertidal locations on the coast of Wales (UK) was investigated during the periol 1986–1987 using these techniques. Three species (Arenicola marina, Corophium arenarium and Lanice conchilega) were selected on the basis of their contrasting styles of burrow construction. All three species produced measurable and significant, although different, changes in bed properties. They modified shear-wave propagation through the bed by changing bed rigidity: while A. marina and C. arenarium decreased rigidity by creating open burrows, L. conchilega increased rigidity by building shell-lined tubes. All produced a decrease in electrical resistivity by altering porosity and/or tortuosity, which implies an increase in permeability; these changes were attributable not only to the presence of the burrows but also to modification of the between-burrow sediment texture and bed properties.  相似文献

Competitiveness and carbon leakage are major concerns for the design of CO2 emissions permits markets. In the absence of a global carbon tax and of border carbon adjustments, output-based allocation is a third-best solution and is actually implemented (Australia, California, New Zealand). The EU has followed a different route; free allowances are allocated to existing or new capacities in proportion to a benchmark, independent of actual production. This paper compares these two schemes in a formal setting and shows that the optimal one is in fact a combination of both schemes, or output-based allocation alone if uncertainty is limited. A key assumption of our analysis is that the short-term import pressure depends both on the existing capacities and the level of demand, which is typical in capital intensive and internationally traded sectors. A calibration of the model is used to discuss the EU scheme for the cement sector in the third phase of the EU-ETS (2013–2020). This allows for a quantification of various policies in terms of welfare, investment, production, company profits, public revenues and leakage.  相似文献
