Most presettlement reef fish settled at night at One Tree Island, Great Barrier Reef. Fish were sampled day and night using channel nets located on the reef crest, and a plankton-mesh purse-seine net in the lagoon (1992–1994). Catches of fish at night were generally tens to hundreds of times greater than those taken during the day. Preflexion fish, as well as postflexion and pelagic juveniles, were taken in greater numbers at night. Preflexion forms were a combination of those that had hatched from demersal eggs and later stages that had been transported over the reef crest. Highest numbers of postflexion and pelagic juvenile forms of Apogonidae, Blenniidae, Gobiesocidae, Gobiidae, Labridae, Lutjanidae, Mugiloididae, Mullidae, Pomacentridae, Scaridae, Serranidae and Tripterygiidae were found at night. Observations, while SCUBA diving, and purse-seine samples in the lagoon indicated that the only resident larvae were of the genera Spratelloides and Hypoatherina; most of the fishes caught in nets, therefore, were immigrants. Patch reefs, sampled for new settlers early in the morning and late in the day, indicated that the majority of apogonids (Apogon doederleini, >95%) settled at night. Although greater numbers of pomacentrids were found in morning counts (e.g. Pomacentrus wardi), if data were converted to an hourly rate, many pomacentrids showed a similar hourly rate of settlement day and night. Depth-stratified sampling in waters near One Tree Island (to 20 m) indicated that some taxa rise to the surface at night. This behaviour, perhaps combined with avoidance of diurnal predators may explain on-reef movement of potential settlers soon after dark. The distribution patterns of presettlement reef fish and how they were influenced by the proximity of reefs were investigated off the coast of Northland, New Zealand, from 1981–1986. We used ichthyoplankton tows and visual counts of fish. Distributions of presettlement fish of some species were influenced by the proximity of reefs, regardless of whether reefs were on the coast of the mainland or islands across the shelf. Presettlement fish of families that lay demersal eggs were most abundant near reefs: Gobiescocidae, Acanthoclinidae, Tripterygiidae, Eleotridae, and Gobiidae. The distribution of presettlement sparids, mullids (pelagic eggs), and blenniids and monacanthids (demersal eggs) was not determined in a predictable way by the proximity of reefs. High-frequency sampling over three days suggested that patches of presettlement sparids of 1 to 2 km in dimension may move quickly through a study area. High abundance of presettlement gobiescocids and tripterygiids were found in 0 to 2 m of water over rocky reefs at high and low tides. Presettlement eleotrids were associated with reefs in deeper water (3 to 20 m) and in some habitats with aggregations of mysids. The lack of general patterns of distribution for presettlement reef fish suggests that modelling patterns of drift of these fish as a single group is inappropriate; this concurs with evidence from tropical waters.  相似文献

Cheilodactylus spectabilis (Hutton) is common over shallow reefs in north-eastern New Zealand. Replicated transect between-area differences in density and in size frequency. C. spectabilis is not nocturnally active. The between-area differences in density and size frequency remained constant over daylight hours, demonstrating that C. spectabilis does not undergo any systematic feeding migrations. Topographic complexity was shown to have a significant positive influence on fish density. Mean size was related to water depth at 5 localities investigated, with small (<200 mm standard length, SL) individuals being restricted to shallow water. All sizes of C. spectabilis examined had fed on small invertebrates, with gammarid amphipods predominating. No evidence of size-related differentiation in feeding patterns was observed, although small individuals spent significantly more time feeding than large ones. Small (<200 mm SL) individuals occupied feeding areas and shelter sites from which they excluded other small C. spectabilis. Large individuals showed no site-associated aggression, covered a greater area during daily movements and overlapped with other large and small C. spectabilis while feeding. No evidence of dawn or dusk peaks of feeding activity or movement was collected.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between swimming performance, wave exposure, and the distribution patterns of labrids on temperate rocky reefs, in comparison with previous functional analyses of a tropical assemblage. Visual censuses of the distribution and abundance of labrids across two major gradients of wave exposure (depth and aspect to prevailing winds) were made at two offshore islands near Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. Distinct shifts in species composition and abundance were evident between high and low wave exposure habitats on temperate rocky reefs, particularly between deep and shallow habitats on exposed reef fronts. The swimming performances of temperate labrids were assessed through examination of pectoral fin shape (aspect ratio) and in situ swimming speeds. A diversity of pectoral fin morphologies was exhibited within this temperate assemblage, ranging from rounded to tapered fins (aspect ratios of 0.52 and 1.43, respectively). Fin shape was strongly correlated (Pearsons correlation 0.884, P<0.001) with swimming speed (ranging from 1.05 and 3.06 body lengths s–1), in a relationship comparable to that observed in tropical labrids. Inter-specific differences in swimming ability provided some explanation for differences in the distribution and abundance of temperate labrids in relation to wave exposure. However, our findings suggest that although coral reef labrids appear to predominantly use high aspect-ratio fins to successfully occupy wave-exposed habitats, temperate labrids appear to be using an enhanced swimming ability through increased body size.Communicated by G.F. Red morwong (Cheilodactylus fuscus; Cheilodactylidae: Perciformes), are large temperate rocky reef fish that are patchily distributed in local aggregations of 3 to >100 fish. The home ranges and aggregating behaviour of red morwong were investigated using external tags (n = 114, over 35 mo) and ultrasonic transmitters (n = 9 over 20 d) at coastal and estuarine sites in south-east Australia. Adult red morwong had a mean home range during the day of 1865 m2 (SE = 268). Night movement, determined by ultrasonic telemetry, indicated a significantly greater mean home range of 3639 m2 (SE = 416). Home range did not differ significantly with size or sex. Fish movements were greatest and aggregation sizes varied most during the non-reproductive mid-summer period. Tagged fish (N = 20) displaced 200 to 900 m returned in 1 to 3 d to the point of capture, often traversing open sand habitat and other aggregations. During the day, fish were commonly found on bouldered habitat. During the night, these site-specific aggregations fragmented as fish dispersed over a variety of substrata, with crepuscular peaks in activity. Increments in the hard parts of marine organisms (otoliths, skeletons, shells) can provide long-term chronologies of growth analogous to tree rings. For the first time in the Southern Hemisphere, we use a dendrochronological (tree-ring analysis) approach to develop a multidecadal chronology of growth for a temperate reef fish, Girella tricuspidata, from the coast of northern New Zealand. Growth patterns in the otoliths of this species were strongly synchronous among individual fish over a period spanning 27 years (1980–2006). We then compared our otolith chronology to climatic records and found strong positive correlations of growth with sea surface temperature, and weak negative correlations with the multivariate El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index. Strongest correlations were found between summer sea surface temperature and otolith growth. This relationship was consistent across all years and explained 44 % of the variation (y = −2.0 + 0.1785 × temperature, r 2 = 0.4367, P = 0.0002) in the G. tricuspidata growth chronology. Our study illustrates how otolith chronologies provide remarkable records of annual growth patterns over decadal time scales that will be useful for forecasting the likely effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.  相似文献

Post-settlement events can significantly alter the density distribution of settlers and subsequently the adult population structure. The temporal and inter-annual variability of settlement and the effects of mortality on recruitment were investigated across 2 years in the vicinities of Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve by visual census and light trap sampling. Settlement was seasonal with greater species richness and abundance in summer. Although temporal synchronization was observed between larval supply and settlement, densities of settlers could not be predicted from post-larval abundances. Timing of settlement was consistent between years but with high inter-annual variation in abundance. High mortality (~80 %) and general decoupling between post-larval and settlement stages suggest that early mortality is driving such patterns. Nevertheless, indications of habitat-mediated mortality were found for benthic species such as Symphodus and Diplodus, highlighting the importance of habitat in shaping population demography.  相似文献

 Territorial Parma microlepis (Günther) (Pomacentridae) were collected at different depths, at three sites in each of four estuaries near Sydney, Australia. Element concentrations were measured by induc- tively-coupled–plasma mass spectrometry. Significant differences in concentrations of Mn and Ba were found in the otoliths of fish sampled in different depth strata, with concentrations generally greatest in fish found in water <4 m deep. Depth-related differences varied among estuaries (e.g. 0 to 1.2 μg Ba g−1 otolith). In most estuaries there was a negative linear relationship between concentrations of Mn and Ba in otoliths and actual depth. Great variation was found within an estuary among sites separated by 0.5 to 3 km. In the eye lenses, concentrations of Rb differed according to depth of capture of fish. The age of fish (1+ to 34 yr) had no influence on the concentrations of elements in otoliths or lenses. Multivariate comparisons of elemental composition (= fingerprints) detected significant differences among depth strata. Fish collected from shallow water had the clearest multivariate classification according to depth. There was a close match between our shallow strata and the average depths reached by low-salinity/high-temperature estuarine plumes. The element composition of whole otoliths and lenses represents average concentrations experienced by the fish. We tested the effect of near-future CO2 levels (≈490, 570, 700, and 960 μatm CO2) on the olfactory responses and activity levels of juvenile coral trout, Plectropomus leopardus, a piscivorous reef fish that is also one of the most important fisheries species on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Juvenile coral trout reared for 4 weeks at 570 μatm CO2 exhibited similar sensory responses and behaviors to juveniles reared at 490 μatm CO2 (control). In contrast, juveniles reared at 700 and 960 μatm CO2 exhibited dramatically altered sensory function and behaviors. At these higher CO2 concentrations, juveniles became attracted to the odor of potential predators, as has been observed in other reef fishes. They were more active, spent less time in shelter, ventured further from shelter, and were bolder than fish reared at 490 or 570 μatm CO2. These results demonstrate that behavioral impairment of coral trout is unlikely if pCO2 remains below 600 μatm; however, at higher levels, there are significant impacts on juvenile performance that are likely to affect survival and energy budgets, with consequences for predator–prey interactions and commercial fisheries.  相似文献

Veliger larvae of the oysterCrassostrea gigas (Thunberg) responded to unknown dissolved chemical inducers found in supernatants of cultures of the bacteriaAlteromonas colwelliana andVibrio cholerae. The response, which was similar to that seen when larvae were exposed to the neurotransmitter precursor L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), consisted of an initial settlement phase of swimming with the foot extended and crawling on the substrate. Subsequently larvae attached to the substrate and metamorphosed. The percentage of veligers metamorphosing following inducation of settlement behavior was higher in a group of older larvae, a response similar to that seen with L-DOPA, suggesting that competence to respond to bacterial supernatants is divided into two phases: behavioral competence followed by morphogenetic competence. Following size exclusion chromatography, the molecular weight of the peak containing the activity which induced settlement behavior was determined to be 300 daltons. Density dependence in demographic rates can strongly affect the dynamics of populations. However, the mechanisms generating density dependence (e.g., predation) are also dynamic processes and may be influenced by local conditions. Understanding the manner in which local habitat features affect the occurrence and/or strength of density dependence will increase our understanding of population dynamics in heterogeneous environments. In this study I conducted two separate field experiments to investigate how local predator density and habitat complexity affect the occurrence and form of density-dependent mortality of juvenile rockfishes (Sebastes spp.). I also used yearly censuses of rockfish populations on nearshore reefs throughout central California to evaluate mortality of juvenile rockfish at large spatial scales. Manipulations of predators (juvenile bocaccio, S. paucispinus) and prey (kelp, gopher, and black-and-yellow [KGB] rockfish, Sebastes spp.) demonstrated that increasing the density of predators altered their functional response and thus altered patterns of density dependence in mortality of their prey. At low densities of predators, the number of prey consumed per predator was a decelerating function, and mortality of prey was inversely density dependent. However, at high densities of predators, the number of prey killed per predator became an accelerating response, and prey mortality was directly density dependent. Results of field experiments and large-scale surveys both indicated that the strength of density-dependent mortality may also be affected by the structural complexity of the habitat. In small-scale field experiments, increased habitat complexity increased the strength of density-dependent mortality. However, at large scales, increasing complexity resulted in a decrease in the strength of density dependence. I suggest that these differences resulted from scale-dependent changes in the predatory response that generated mortality. Whether increased habitat complexity leads to an increase or a decrease in the strength of density-dependent mortality may depend on how specific predatory responses (e.g., functional or aggregative) are altered by habitat complexity. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that rates of demographic density dependence and the resulting dynamics of local populations may largely depend upon attributes of the local habitat.  相似文献

Determining the scale of larval dispersal and population connectivity in demersal fishes is a major challenge in marine ecology. Historically, considerations of larval dispersal have ignored the possible contributions of larval behaviour, but we show here that even young, small larvae have swimming, orientation and vertical positioning capabilities that can strongly influence dispersal outcomes. Using young (11–15 days), relatively poorly developed (8–10 mm), larvae of the pomacentrid damselfish, Amblyglyphidodon curacao (identified using mitochondrial DNA), we studied behaviour relevant to dispersal in the laboratory and sea on windward and leeward sides of Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Behaviour varied little with size over the narrow size range examined. Critical speed was 27.5 ± 1.0 cm s−1 (30.9 BL s−1), and in situ speed was 13.6 ± 0.6 cm s−1. Fastest individuals were 44.6 and 25.0 cm s−1, for critical and in situ speeds, respectively. In situ speed was about 50% of critical speed and equalled mean current speed. Unfed larvae swam 172 ± 29 h at 8–10 cm s−1 (52.0 ± 8.6 km), and lost 25% wet weight over that time. Vertical distribution differed between locations: modal depth was 2.5–5.0 and 10.0–12.5 m at leeward and windward sites, respectively. Over 80% of 71 larvae observed in situ had directional swimming trajectories. Larvae avoided NW bearings, with an overall mean SE swimming direction, regardless of the direction to nearest settlement habitat. Larvae made smaller changes between sequential bearings of swimming direction when swimming SE than in other directions, making it more likely they would continue to swim SE. When swimming NW, 62% of turns were left (more than in other directions), which would quickly result in swimming direction changing away from NW. This demonstrates the larvae knew the direction in which they were swimming and provides insight into how they achieved SE swimming direction. Although the cues used for orientation are unclear, some possibilities seemingly can be eliminated. Thus, A. curacao larvae near Lizard Island, on average swam into the average current at a speed equivalent to it, could do this for many hours, and chose different depths in different locations. These behaviours will strongly influence dispersal, and are similar to behaviour of other settlement-stage pomacentrid larvae that are older and larger.  相似文献

The influence of genetic relatedness on the individual performance (e.g. growth, development) of animals is often tied to agonistic or cooperative behaviors among conspecifics, and studies of the effects of kinship have produced mixed results. To explore genetic relatedness independent of these behaviors, we investigated the effects of kinship on the growth of the kelp perch Brachyistius frenatus, a live-bearing, planktivorous marine reef fish that is capable of only limited dispersal. Although juveniles occur in aggregations and compete for food resources, they do not exhibit overt aggressive or cooperative behavioral interactions. We hypothesized that under competition and in the absence of these behaviors, sibling and non-sibling groups of juvenile B. frenatus raised at the same densities in the field would not differ in average growth, but that siblings would exhibit lower variation in growth, simply due to genetic similarities in inherent growth rates. Pregnant, female kelp perch were collected and placed in cages until parturition was complete. Groups of young, recently born from the same mother or from different mothers, were then raised in the field for 9 wk. Our results revealed that average growth rates were similar between sibling and non-sibling treatments. While variation in growth increased initially in non-siblings, siblings showed little such variation. This divergence, however, was not consistent over the duration of the experiment, and variation in the growth of siblings ultimately converged with that of non-siblings. Effects of genetic relatedness would be most likely to manifest themselves early after birth, before environmental factors exert their influence, and this may explain the initial separation but eventual convergence in variation in growth between sibling and non-sibling treatments. For B. frenatus and other organisms that will encounter relatives and compete for resources without overt behavioral interactions, the degree of kinship may play a minor role in the demography of local populations. Parasitism is hypothesized to reduce reproductive success in heavily parasitized males because females may preferentially mate with less parasitized males (parasite-mediated sexual selection) or parasites may compromise male competitiveness. In marine systems, this hypothesis is largely unexplored. This paper provides the first confirmed record of a copepod ectoparasite (Caligus buechlerae Hewitt 1964) on the common triplefin (Forsterygion lapillum) and evaluates the hypothesis that males parasitized with C. buechlerae experience lower reproductive success than unparasitized males (as determined by the presence and area of eggs within male nests). We found that 38 % of males we surveyed were infected with at least one C. buechlerae, with a median of two individuals per infected male. About 32 % of males were defending eggs, with 62.5 % of those males infected with at least one parasite. Males of greater total length (TL) were both more likely to be infected and more likely to be defending eggs. However, when statistically accounting for the effects of TL, parasite infection had no effect on the probability of defending eggs, or the average surface area of eggs when present. Positive covariation in fish length, the presence of eggs and parasite infection observed here potentially suggest that the importance of parasitic infection on reproductive success may depend upon the strength of selection for larger male body size. Our study is one of the few studies to investigate the effects of ectoparasites on reproductive success in reef fish and also provides a quantitative measure of infection for a widespread species within New Zealand.  相似文献
