Manganese (Mn) is an essential mineral nutrient in mammals. The physiological role of Mn in animal models is well documented, but little is known about the adverse effects of Mn deficiency or overexposure in humans, including pregnancy outcomes such as birth weight. We examined the relationship of the maternal and cord blood Mn levels with birth weight in a cohort of 172 mother–infant pairs born in Shanghai, China. Non-linear spline and quadratic regression models were used to test the hypothesis of an inverted U-shaped association between the Mn levels and birth weight. The median (range) levels of Mn in the maternal and cord blood were 5.38 (2.34–30.37) μg/dL and 7.66 (2.57–34.23) μg/dL, respectively. An inverted U-shaped relationship was observed between maternal Mn and birth weight after adjusting for potential confounders. The birth weight increased with Mn levels up to 4.18 μg/dL, and a slight reduction in weight was observed at higher levels. The cord blood Mn levels were not found to be associated with birth weight. Both lower and higher Mn exposures are associated with lower birth weight, which may influence important developmental parameters; the association of higher Mn levels with lower weight was weak and imprecise.  相似文献

Towing-tank and wind-tunnel measurements of the concentration distributions on the surface of a hill when a plume impinges from an upwind source are presented. The stability is varied between very stable and neutral. The results are compared with the theories developed in Part I. When the source is below the dividing-streamline height HD, the plumes impact on the front surface of the hill, yielding surface concentrations nearly the same as would be observed at the plume centerline in the absence of the hill. However, eddying in the wake can cause oscillations in the plume upwind so as to increase the area of impingement and decrease the average concentration. When the source is above HD, the plume surmounts the hill top, but if it is only slightly above HD, maximum surface concentrations can again essentially equal those that would be observed at the plume centerline in the absence of the hill. The maximum surface concentration decreases very rapidly with further increases in source height. The location and value of the maximum surface concentrations are found to be extremely sensitive to slight displacements of the source from the stagnation streamline when the source is below HD. The general assumptions of the potential flow models developed in Part I to provide estimates of surface concentrations on three-dimensional hills are useful.  相似文献

During gestation, essential and non-essential trace elements are transferred from the pregnant females to embryos. This study aimed to determine and compare the concentrations of seven essential trace elements (Fe, Zn, Se, Cu, Mn, Cr, Co) and six non-essential trace elements (As, Cd, V, U, Tl, Ag) in the muscle and the liver of a Munk’s pygmy devil ray pregnant female, Mobula munkiana, and its embryo. Transfer evidence of essential and non-essential trace elements was detected in M. munkiana tissues. Arsenic was found in elevated concentrations in the pregnant female and the embryo tissues. Elevated levels of Cd, V, U, and Ag were found in the pregnant female liver, but were minimal in the embryo tissue. This is the first study to investigate maternal transfer of essential and non-essential trace elements in these species and their reproductive strategy.

BACKGROUNDS: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have drawn much attention due to their environmental persistence, ubiquitous existence, and bioaccumulation potential. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are fundamental utilities in cities, playing an important role in preventing water pollution by lowering pollution load in waste waters. However, some of the emerging organic pollutants, like PFCs cannot be efficiently removed by traditional biological technologies in WWTPs, and some even increase in effluents compared to influents due to the incomplete degradation of precursors. Hence, WWTPs are considered to be a main point source in cities for PFCs that enter the aquatic environment. However, the mass flow of PFCs from WWTPs has seldom been analyzed for a whole city. Hence, in the present study, 11 PFCs including series of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs, C4-C12) and two perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFASs, C6 and C8) were measured in WWTP influents and effluents and sludge samples from six municipal WWTPs in Tianjin, China. Generation and dissipation of the target PFCs during wastewater treatment process and their mass flow in effluents were discussed. RESULTS: All the target PFCs were detected in the six WWTPs, and the total PFC concentration in different WWTPs was highly influenced by the population density and commercial activities of the corresponding catchments. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the predominant PFC in water phase, with concentrations ranging from 20 to 170 ng/L in influents and from 30 to 145 ng/L in effluents. Concentrations of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates decreased substantially in the effluent compared to the influent, which could be attributed to the sorption onto sludge, whereas concentrations of PFOA and some other PFCAs increased in the effluent in some WWTPs due to their weaker sorption onto solids and the incomplete degradation of precursors. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) was the predominant PFC in sludge samples followed by PFOA, and their concentrations ranged from 42 to 169 g/kg and from 12 to 68 g/kg, respectively. Sludge-wastewater distribution coefficients (log K(d)) ranged from 0.62 to 3.87 L/kg, increasing with carbon chain length of the homologues. The mass flow of some PFCs in the effluent was calculated, and the total mass flow from all the six municipal WWTPs in Tianjin was 26, 47, and 3.5 kg/year for perfluorohexanoic acid, PFOA, and PFOS, respectively.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of gas phase and paniculate concentrations of C9–C28n-alkanes in clean air at the west coast of Ireland are reported. All n-alkanes were regularly present with gas phase concentrations between about 10 and 20 × 10−9 g m−3 STP, showing no systematic decrease above C13. Continental air showed higher concentrations. The fraction of alkanes attached to aerosol particles increases from less than 1% at low C-numbers to several per cent at high C-numbers. The carbon preference index is generally close to 1.0; seawater samples from that area exhibit similar distributions of n-alkanes as the gas phase.  相似文献

Westerly winds arriving at the Australian Clean Air Baseline Station Cape Grim at the North Western tip of Tasmania have exceedingly long trajectories over the Indian Ocean. In these air masses we found the n-alkanes C9-C28 to be always present in the gas phase and also in the aerosols. In aerosols we also measured total organic matter and its general composition. All these concentrations agree fairly well with our earlier data in marine air over the North Atlantic Ocean. Calculations of the life time of the gas phase n-alkanes due to reaction with OH radicals lead to the conclusion that these n-alkanes must be of oceanic origin in Indian Ocean air and — to a large extent — also in the North Atlantic air. The same conclusion is reached for the organic component in aerosols. Water Analyses show that the n-alkanes C9-C28 seem to be normal constituents of the oceans.  相似文献

During April 1999 and March 2000, intensive field campaigns were performed on a mid-level mountain (Rax, 1644 m a.s.l.) in Central Europe both under out-of-cloud and in-cloud conditions. The black carbon (BC) content of both aerosol and cloud water as well as BC scavenging efficiencies of Rax clouds were measured. As a tracer for the non-carbonaceous aerosol, sulfate was used. Although BC concentrations on Rax were low (April 1999 out-of-cloud average: 0.43 μg/m3, March 2000: 0.72 μg/m3), the BC mass fraction of the aerosol was fairly high (1999: 3.5%, 2000: 6.4%). Average BC concentrations in cloud water were 1.09 μg/ml (1999) and 1.4 μg/ml (2000). These values are far higher than literature values, but comparable to those found in an earlier study (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) at a high-level mountain (Sonnblick, 3106 m a.s.l.) some 200 km distant from Rax. The average BC scavenging efficiency of the Rax clouds in March 2000 was 0.54. The increase of scavenging efficiency with increasing liquid water content of the clouds found earlier on Sonnblick for sulfate and aerosol carbon (J. Atmos. Chem 35 (2000) 33), organic carbon (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (2000) 19857), and BC (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) was also confirmed on Rax.  相似文献

One year of weekly average 85Kr concentrations observed at 13 sampling locations from 30 to 150km from a quasi-continuous point source is used in a verification study involving two air pollution models.The first, a stability wind rose model, similar to those widely used for long-term regional pollution studies, overestimates the seasonal and annual values by an approximate factor of 4 on the average. Factors that contribute to the overestimation are the use of surface winds, which are slower than the stack-height winds, and a likely tendency to overestimate the frequency and duration of stable conditions.The second, a trajectory-diffusion model developed by the Air Resources Laboratories, shows good agreement with the observed concentrations. Calculated seasonal averages are generally within a factor of 2 of the observed average values. Calculated annual averages are within ± 20% of the observed average values at most stations.  相似文献

We followed the net accumulation of As, Cu and Zn in the deposit-feeding polychaete Arenicola marina exposed in the laboratory to natural metal-contaminated sediments, one exposure leading to mass mortality between day 10 and 20, and the other not causing lethality over a period of 60 days of exposure. The worms showed lower total accumulated metal concentrations just before mortality occurred (<20 days) at the lethal exposure, than after 30 days of exposure to sediments not causing mortality. Moreover rates of accumulation of As, Cu and Zn were significantly higher in the lethal exposure than in the sublethal exposure. Our results show that it is not possible to link mortality to a critical total body concentration, and we add to a growing body of literature indicating that metal toxicity occurs when organisms cannot cope with overwhelming influx and subsequent accumulation rates.  相似文献

Atmospheric ammonia mixing ratios and the main inorganic ions NH4+, NO3 and SO42− of size-resolved particles in the range from 0.05 to 10 μm were measured at an urban site in Münster, Germany. High mixing ratios of ammonia with a median of 5.2 ppb and a maximum of 50 ppb were detected. The mass fraction of submicron particles was much higher during the day than at night. At night, a greater particle mass and an increased presence of particulate nitrate was measured. Recurring patterns of particle distribution were distinguished and their characteristics analysed. In half of the measurements, the accumulation mode was clearly dominating, which is an indication of aged aerosol. In some measurements, higher concentrations of fine particles were found indicating particle formation. In these cases, a smaller particle mass and about four times greater ratios of ammonia versus ammonium concentrations were observed. These data show that ammonia contributes considerably to the formation of secondary particulate material.  相似文献

The dry deposition velocities and fluxes of ammonia have been estimated from measurements of the vertical gradient of ammonia and micrometeorology above a spruce forest in western Jutland, Denmark. Measurements have been made in seven periods, each lasting about one week and covering all seasons and different meteorological situations. Different deposition characteristics were observed, depending on the ammonia concentration and the relative humidity. At conditions with westerly winds, the wind brings air masses from the North Sea with low concentration levels of ammonia to the site, while at conditions with easterly winds, the air have passed central Jutland with large emission areas. Some of the relatively low deposition velocities or emissions were observed during conditions with low ammonia concentration and westerly winds. These observations might relate to a compensation point of the forest, i.e. an ammonia concentration below which the trees and/or the surface emit ammonia due to an equilibrium with the ammonia inside the needles or on the surface. Emission of ammonia was also observed at relatively high ammonia concentration levels (above 2 μg NH3–N m-3), mainly during one measuring period characterized by easterly winds with dry conditions and high ammonia concentrations, and the emissions might relate to evaporation from ammonia saturated surfaces or emission from mineralization in the forest soil. In general, relatively high net deposition velocities were observed during conditions with relative humidity above 80% or at ammonia concentrations moderate higher than a given (temperature dependent) compensation point. During stable conditions some observations revealed that the gradient above the canopy not necessarily represents the exchange with the canopy.  相似文献

The concentrations of the aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and the isomeric xylenes (BTEX) have been determined in the indoor air of 115 private non-smoker homes (∼380 individual rooms) situated in areas with an extreme traffic situation, i.e. in city streets (street canyons) with high traffic density and in rural areas with hardly any traffic at all. The influence of the traffic on the indoor concentration was apparent in the high traffic area. In order to identify other factors influencing the BTEX concentrations, the data and additional questionnaires were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis. The analysis was supplemented by some case studies. It is shown that meteorology (the seasons), the type of room (e.g. living room versus bedroom), the ventilation and, in particular, garages in the house strongly influence the indoor concentration of BTEX. Thus, the indoor BTEX level is significantly higher in winter than in summer. Moreover, garages with a connecting door to the living quarters lead to high indoor concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons in these rooms. In addition, the storage of solvents and hobby materials, and also the presence of smoking guests increase the BTEX level. If rooms are directly heated by coal or wood, the BTEX level is higher compared to the use of gas heating. Surprisingly, no correlation was found between the building materials used and the BTEX level. Case studies were carried out for two homes with an integrated garage (and a connecting door to the living rooms) and for seven homes where redecoration work was carried out during sampling. Although organic nitrogen (ON) has been found to be a ubiquitous and significant component in wet and dry deposition, almost nothing is known about its concentration or composition in fog waters. To address this gap, we have investigated the concentration and composition of ON in fog waters collected in Davis, in California's Central Valley. Significant quantities of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) were found in these samples, with a median concentration of 303 μM N (range=120–1630 μM N). DON typically represented approximately 16% of the total dissolved nitrogen (inorganic+organic) in Davis fog waters. The median concentration of nitrogen in free amino acids and alkyl amines was 16 μM N (range=3.8–120 μM N), which accounted for 3.4% of the DON in Davis fogs. Thus, although the absolute concentrations of free amino compounds were significant, they were only a minor component of the DON pool. Combined amino nitrogen (e.g., proteins and peptides) was present at higher concentrations and accounted for 6.1–29% (median=16%) of DON. Overall, free and combined amino compounds typically accounted for a median value of 22% of DON in the fog waters.The high concentrations of DON found, and the fact that amino and other N-containing organic compounds can serve as nitrogen sources for microorganisms and plants, indicate that atmospheric ON compounds likely play an important role in nitrogen cycling in the Central Valley. In addition, due to the basicity of some N functional groups, ON compounds likely contribute to the previously observed acid buffering capacity of Central Valley fog waters. Finally, a comparison of fog waters with fine particles (PM2.5) collected from the same site during the same period of time indicated that the median concentrations (mol N m−3-air) of total water-soluble ON, free amino nitrogen and total amino nitrogen were very similar in the fog water and PM2.5. Given the high water solubility of many organic N compounds, this result suggests that ON might contribute to the hygroscopic properties of atmospheric particles.  相似文献

The rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization, along with dramatic climate change, has strongly influenced hydrochemical characteristics in recent decades in China and thus could cause the variation of pH and general total hardness of a river. To explore such variations and their potential influencing factors in a river of the monsoon climate region, we analyzed a long-term monitoring dataset of pH, SO4 2?, NOx, general total hardness (GH), Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl? in surface water and groundwater in the Luan River basin from 1985 to 2009. The nonparametric Seasonal Kendall trend test was used to test the long-term trends of pH and GH. Relationship between the affecting factors, pH and GH were discussed. Results showed that pH showed a decreasing trend and that GH had an increasing trend in the long-term. Seasonal variation of pH and GH was mainly due to the typical monsoon climate. Results of correlation analysis showed that the unit area usage amounts of chemical fertilizer, NO3 ?, and SO4 2? were negatively correlated with pH in groundwater. In addition, mining activity affected GH spatial variation. Acid deposition, drought, and increasing the use of chemical fertilizers would contribute to the acidification trend, and mining activities would affect the spatial variation of GH. Variations of precipitation and runoff in semi-arid monsoon climate areas had significant influences on the pH and GH. Our findings implied that human activities played a critical role in river acidification in the semi-arid monsoon climate region of northern China.  相似文献

All aquatic invertebrates take up and accumulate trace metals whether essential or not, and subsequent body concentrations of trace metals show enormous variability across metals and invertebrate taxa. Accumulated metal concentrations are interpreted in terms of different trace metal accumulation patterns, dividing accumulated metals into two components--metabolically available metal and stored detoxified metal. Crustaceans are used as examples of different accumulation patterns that will have a general applicability to all aquatic invertebrates. Toxicity is related to a threshold concentration of metabolically available metal and not to total accumulated metal concentration. The significance of accumulated metal concentrations is discussed in terms of the biological significance, including the attempted recognition of a high or low concentration, and of the applied use of aquatic invertebrates in biomonitoring programmes assessing geographical and temporal variation in trace metal bioavailabilities in aquatic systems.  相似文献

In this study, the BC aerosol measured at two very different urban sites is compared in terms of concentration, seasonal variation, and size distribution. During a 14 month study, one impactor sample was performed each month on a day with typical meteorological conditions. One (Vienna) or three (Uji) filter samples were obtained during the sampling time of the impactors. BC concentration in both the filter and impactor samples was analyzed with an optical technique (integrating sphere technique), where a calibration curve obtained from commercial carbon black is used to convert the optical signal to BC mass. Gravimetric mass concentration was measured at both sites. The gravimetric mass size distribution was measured only in Vienna. At both sites, the yearly average of the BC concentration on the sampling days was around 5 μg m−3. In Vienna, some seasonal trend with high concentrations during the cold season was observed, while in Uji, no pronounced seasonal trend was found. The BC size distribution in Uji was distinctly bimodal in the submicron size range. Log-normal distributions were fitted through the impactor data. The average BC mass median diameters (MMD) of the two submicron modes were 0.15 and 0.39 μm. Each mode contained about the same amount of BC mass. In Vienna only one submicron BC mode (average MMD 0.3 μm) was found because of the low size resolution of the impactor. An analysis of humidity effects on the MMDs of BC (both sites) and gravimetric mass (Vienna only) indicates that the Vienna aerosol is partly mixed internally with respect to BC, while the Uji aerosol seems to be externally mixed.  相似文献

The results of an interdisciplinary research program on the subsurface persistence and transport of pathogenic bacteria and viruses are evaluated on the basis of an expanded advection-dispersion model which considers the persistence of these microorganisms under the conditions found within an aquifer, the retardation by adsorption-desorption processes and the role of filtration processes. The model indicates that the principal controls are filtration processes, the microorganisms being fixed on the filter media are ultimately eliminated or inactivated by biological, chemical and physical processes.  相似文献
