A continuously recording, flow-through oxygen electrode system for the measurement of oxygen exchange is described and applied to an investigation of photosynthetic rates in the marine algae Fucus vesiculosus L. and Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lam. The photosynthetic rate (mg O2.g dry weight-1.h-1) at 15°C and 21.5 mW.cm-2 (usually just saturating) ranges in F. vesiculosus from 1.20 in basal portions of the thallus to 9.27 at the apices and in L. digitata from 1.19 mg O2 at the thallus base to 3.97 mg O2 at distances of several centimetres behind the upper thallus margin. This variation is reduced when the photosynthetic rate is expressed in terms of fresh weight or surface area. This research was carried out while one of us (R.J.K.) was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Kiel, and is part of the programme Sonderforschungsbereich 95, Wechselwirkung Meer-Meeresboden, Universität Kiel. 相似文献

Plant phenols tend to accumulate under conditions where plants have excess carbon above the level which can be used for growth, and where phenylalanine, the substrate of phenylpropanoid synthesis, accumulates due to suppressed protein synthesis. These internal balances imply an accumulation of phenols as a consequence of nitrogen deficiency suppressing plant primary metabolism. In three sublittoral populations of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus (L.) collected from the northern Baltic Sea between May and September 1982, the accumulation of phenolic compounds correlated inversely with nitrogen content of thallus; higher phenolic contents were on average found under nitrogen deficiency. Phenolic content did not correlate with carbon content of thallus as such, while a significant negative correlation was found with the nitrogen: carbon ratio. Phenolic compounds, although having possibly defensive functions in plants, may thus partially vary as a function of resource availability rather than as a result of an active allocation into plant defences. 相似文献

The vesiculation and branching of Fucus vesiculosus L. were examined on plants from three different locations on the Maine Coast, USA. These localities varied in exposure to wave action and salinity. Statistical analysis of population differences was computed for 10 morphometric characteristics. It was found that decreased salinity correlated with increased vesiculation and branching. Increased wave action correlated with decreased vesiculation. Position within vertical range was not a factor in either vesiculation or branching. 相似文献

Copper is an active ingredient in many antifouling products, and pleasure boats are estimated to be the major single source of copper pollution in Swedish coastal waters. For this reason, the effects of copper were studied on egg volume, fertilization, germination and development of apical hairs of Baltic Sea Fucus vesiculosus L. Germination was the most sensitive stage and was studied at different concentrations of copper, different salinities and different ages of zygotes. Low concentrations of copper, 2.5 g Cu l-1, added to natural brackish water before fertilization, adversely affected germination at the ambient, suboptimal salinity of 6, suggesting that as little as a doubling of the copper levels in the studied area will severely affect the germination frequency of F. vesiculosus. The addition of 20 g Cu l-1 caused about 70 to 80% decline in germination at 6S but also at 20S which is higher than optimum. At a salinity close to optimum (14S) no negative effect was noticed on germination when 20 g Cu l-1 was added. The results suggest that the degree of salinity stress acting upon the zygotes is a more important factor for the response to copper than the influence of salinity on metal availability. When 2.5 to 60 g Cu l-1 was added to the medium 24 h after fertilization, the zygotes were more resistant, resembling the response of adult marine fucoid tissue. 相似文献

In many temperate estuarine areas, ongoing climatic changes are expected to lead to higher seawater temperatures, to increased inflow of freshwater and nutrients (due to increased rainfall) and to altered light conditions. During the last two decades, several winters have been unusually mild in southern Finland, and the subsequent springs have been early. This may have consequences for the seasonality of many species, including the bladder-wrack, Fucus vesiculosus, whose reproductive cycle may be especially sensitive. In the present study, F. vesiculosus receptacles from the field were weighed regularly during three warm (early) springs and compared with receptacles from three cold (late) springs. On average, the first sign of receptacle growth in the field occurred 5–6?weeks earlier and receptacles probably matured 2–3?weeks earlier during the warm springs than during the cold springs. This may be due to differences in seawater temperatures among years, but significantly heavier receptacles at 0.8?m compared to at 3.1?m further suggests the importance of light for receptacle growth as a measure of maturation, since there were no depth-related differences in seawater temperatures. Also, when plotting receptacle wet weights against seawater temperatures, the importance of light can be seen as different regression relationships (slopes and intercepts). In an outdoor aquarium experiment, the effects of temperature and light on receptacle growth were also tested, and there were significant differences between shallow and deep specimens, but temperature and light had no effects, except on initial receptacle growth. Since oogonian development, and thereby the time for zygote release, followed the receptacle growth curve, this could mean a mismatch between the timing of F. vesiculosus zygote settlement and the cover of competing filamentous algae, but such species interactions require further investigations in order to better understand their possible consequences. 相似文献

Intertidal macroalgae may spend a significant part of their lives in air. During photosynthesis in air, they encounter much
lower concentrations of inorganic carbon than in seawater. Because they accumulate inorganic carbon from seawater, we investigated
whether they similarly accumulate it from air. We measured photosynthesis in the intertidal species Fucus vesiculosus L. during 1990 and 1991 with a gas-phase O2 electrode or CO2-exchange apparatus in air and with a liquid-phase O2 electrode in seawater. Maximum rates were rapid and similar in air and seawater regardless of the method. Tissue from seawater
could carry on photosynthesis in CO2-free air, indicating that carbon was stored in the tissue. After 2 h, this store was depleted and photosynthesis ceased.
Supplying CO2 in air replenished the store. Under identical conditions, terrestrial C3 and C4 species showed no evidence of this store, but a CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism) species did. However, in contrast to the
CAM behavior, F. vesiculosus did not store CO2 significantly in the dark. We found a small acid-releasable pool of carbon in the tissue that disappeared as photosynthesis
depleted the carbon store. However, the pool was too small to account for the total carbon stored. While CO2 was being acquired or released from the store in the light, photosynthesis was not inhibited by 21% O2. These results indicate that there are two parallel paths for the supply of CO2 to photosynthesis. The first depends on inorganic carbon in seawater or in air and supports rapid photosynthesis. The second
involves CO2 slowly released from an organic intermediate. The release protects CO2 fixation from the inhibitory effects of 21% O2. Photosynthesis in F. vesiculosus thus appears to be C3-like in its rapid fixation of CO2 from a small inorganic pool into phosphoglycerate. However, it is C4-like in its pre-fixation of carbon in an organic pool in the light, and is CAM-like in its ability to slowly use this pool
as a sole source of CO2. The organic pool may serve to protect photosynthetic CO2 fixation against the inhibitory effects of O2 in air and in the boundary layer in seawater.

Zygotes and young embryos derived from Fucus vesiculosus collected in the archipelgo of Stockholm in 1990, growing at a salinity of 6 to 7 S, were cultured under different salinity conditions and in media of different bromine concentrations. Optimum salinity was 10 to 12 S for germination (rhizoid initiation) while apical hair formation showed a broader tolerance curve with an optimum at 8 to 14 S. Bromine caused inhibition of early development of F. vesiculosus. At 6 salinity a 50% reduction in germination took place at 10.0 mM Br and at 1.25 mM Br only 4.7% of the embryos developed apical hairs, as compared to 32.7% in the control. Bromine toxicity decreased at higher salinities. The results indicate that F. vesiculosus in the Baltic Sea has diverged from its Atlantic progenitors and to some extent acclimated to low salinity. Still, the salinity in the normal environment of the tested population is lower than optimum, leading to a lower degree of germination of zygotes, a lower growth rate of young embryos and probably also a higher sensitivity to additional stress factors such as chemical pollution. 相似文献

Morphological variation and vertical distribution of Fucus vesiculosus were quantified at several sites in the Finnish archipelago (Baltic Sea). F. vesiculosus samples were obtained from skerries at geographical distances of 1 km or more (large scale) and at intervals of ca 100 m
around a single island (small scale). The results were examined in relation to wave exposure, calculated by Baardseth and
effective fetch cartographic methods. Despite the fact that the exposure indices were calculated differently they correlated
strongly. Vegetative morphological characteristics of F. vesiculosus illustrate the morphological differences both within and between exposure gradients. The tallest and widest F. vesiculosus plants were found at the sheltered end of the large-scale exposure gradient. Those from equally sheltered sites of the island
were smaller in all respects. Thus, the trend from small narrow plants to large wide sheltered plants was expressed differently
over the different geographical scales. Consequently localities with similar exposure indices may have morphologically different
F. vesiculosus populations. Shores with similar cartographic exposure indices can be different in nature. Underwater topography and shore
locations, either close to the mainland or at the outermost sites of the archipelago, affect the exposure. Although a sheltered
shore is indicated, the sublittoral zone may be quite exposed to the movements of water. In contrast, in an open shore environment
underwater rocks, boulders and shallow water areas can provide sheltered habitats. The depth range of the F. vesiculosus belt exhibited two distinctive patterns. At sheltered sites, around islands in the outermost reaches of the archipelago F. vesiculosus can grow to a maximum depth of 5 m. In exposed habitats the belt becomes narrower, reaching a maximum depth of 3 m. Closer
to the mainland F. vesiculosus is found at exposed sites to a maximum depth of 5 m; the depth range at sheltered sites is narrower, only reaching depths
of 2 m or less. In conclusion, the changes in plant morphology and in the vertical belt distribution are similar to each other
along both gradients at the exposed ends of the wave action spectrum; however, the two gradients diverge at the sheltered
ends of the spectrum.

Photosynthesis in whole plants of the salt-marsh algae Fucus vesiculosus and Ulva lactuca was evaluated by 14C-uptake under a variety of light intensities at approximately mately monthly intervals during a 15-month study. Photosynthetic capacity in both species was closely related to seasonal irradiation patterns and changes in field biomass. Maximum photosynthesis occurred in the spring and summer months. Photosynthesis on a dry weight basis was higher in U. lactuca, while photosynthesis on a chlorophyll a basis was equal in both species. Photosynthetic capacity was inversely related to pigment content. Maximum chlorophyll a concentrations occurred during the winter. Frond profile studies in F. vesiculosus indicated that apices always exhibited greatest photosynthetic capacity. Uptake of 14C into ethanol-soluble and insoluble fractions was different in each species. F. vesiculosus showed greater activity in the ethanol-soluble fraction while U. lactuca exhibited greater activity in ethanol-insoluble fractions. This research was supported by Research Grant AG-375 from the National Science Foundation and, in part, by the State University of New York Research Foundation and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). 相似文献

Integumental sensilla were examined in 39 species of meso- and bathypelagic shrimps and 6 species of epibenthic shrimps. A tuft organ, consisting of a group of openended, tubular setae and so probably functioning as a chemosensor, is described. A single tuft with ancillary smaller tufts occur on the dorsal median surface of the fourth abdominal segment and two pairs of tufts occur on the proximal dorsal region of the telson of all oplophorid and pandalid shrimps examined. An additional tuft is present on the fifth abdominal segment of the rare bathypelagic Physetocaris microphthalma Chace. No tuft organs were identified in Processa canaliculata Leach, suggesting that they may not occur in all families of caridean shrimps. Acanthephyrid, systellaspid and pandalid shrimps have the integument completely covered by scales. These are extremely delicate and are normally removed during the process of catching the shrimp through abrasion of the integument by the net. The scales are peculiarly orientated, pointing anteriorly in the anterior half and posteriorly in the posterior half of the body. They probably have a sensory function as distance receptors, monitoring water currents and disturbances in the environment surrounding the shrimp. 相似文献

We compared the effect of habitat and water depth on the light-harvesting pigment content for Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus at two near-shore stations in Long Island Sound (USA). Excised pieces of seaweeds were attached at depth intervals to a vertically buoyed line, and left in situ for 7 days. For comparison, fronds were collected from sun and shade habitats in the littoral zone. The three major antenna (light-harvesting) pigments increased in concentration with depth or shade. Chlorophyll c to a ratios remained stable at about 0.2. Fucoxanthin to chlorophyll a ratios decreased by 20 to 30% with depth or shade. Although pigment composition for the two rockweed species was equivalent, the maximum photosynthetic performance of F. vesiculosus exceeded that of A. nodosum by a factor of 2, while the compensation depths for 4 m-adapted A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus under natural limiting light conditions were equivalent. Plants held at 4 m had higher photosynthetic rates compared with plants held at 0 m, no matter the depth of measurement. Indirect evidence indicates that the enhanced photosynthesis of 4 m-adapted plants is due not only to higher concentrations of antenna pigments but to other physiological factors as well. We conclude that the clearly delineated vertical distribution of these two canopy species, the F. vesiculosus zone over the A. nodosum zone, is not determined by light quantity or quality, but by biotic factors as evidenced by the experiments of Menge which are cited herein. 相似文献

Grazing rates of the isopod Idotea baltica on Fucus evanescens and F. vesiculosus (Phaeophyta) were quantified in laboratory feeding preference experiments. Fucus species were offered alone (no-choice) or simultaneously (choice). In three of four no-choice experiments and in all four choice experiments, I. baltica significantly preferred F. vesiculosus to F. evanescens. F. evanescens recently immigrated into Kiel Fjord and has increased in abundance since 1990. One possible reason for the competitive success of this species may be that, compared to F. vesiculosus, it is less preferred by I. baltica, the most abundant mesograzer at the study site. 相似文献

Features of fucoid zonation (Fucus spiralis, F. vesiculosus, Ascophyllum and F. serratus) in a vertical range of 60 cm at Kristineberg (Gullmar Fjord, W. Coast of Sweden) are described. In contrast to identical species occupying areas with wider tidal ranges, these plants are smaller in size and inhabit narrow, overlapping zones. Investigation into the magnitude of pressure and gas composition in vesicles of F. vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum revealed an average positive pressure equivalent to 1.7 and 7 cm of water for the 2 plants in succession. These small values compare favourably with the pressure head to which such vesicles are subjected at Kristineberg. O2-percentage amounts to 28.5% and 32.7% in vesicles of both plants in succession. O2-values increase in daytime and decrease at night or when plants are maintained in the dark. CO2-content in the two plants fluctuates between 0 to 2.6% and bears no correlation to the oxygen values. It is suggested that the pressure produced in the vesicles is due mainly to oxygen. Comparison of these results with those by other authors are made whenever possible. 相似文献

Fucus distichus L. was collected near Vancouver, Canada, in late fall and early winter, 1981. The effects of the forms of nitrogen (nitrate, ammonium or urea) and periodic exposure to air on growth, rhizoid development and nitrogen uptake in germlings was investigated. Gamete release, fertilization, germination and germling growth had no requirement for a specific form of nitrogen. Periodic exposure to air increased secondary rhizoid development twofold. Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates of the germlings were higher than for the mature thalli (20 to 40 times for nitrate and 8 times for ammonium), while the halfsaturation constant (K
s) values for nitrate were similar (1 to 5 M). The germlings showed saturable uptake kinetics but the mature thalli did not. When germlings were exposed to air it caused a 70% decrease in nitrate uptake, but not change in ammonium uptake. Ammonium uptake in the mature thalli was proportional to the ambient ammonium concentration. Nitrate uptake in the mature thalli appeared to follow saturation kinetics at low nitrate concentrations, but showed a non-saturable component at concentrations greater than 10 M. Presence of ammonium inhibited nitrate uptake by the mature plants but not by the germlings. 相似文献

An examination by protein-gel electrophoresis of 19 different geographical populations of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) was conducted along the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Estimates were made of levels of genetic variation and similarity among the populations based on 32 structural loci. The percentage of loci polymorphic ranged from 46.9 to 65.6% along the Atlantic coast while the estimate ranged from 54.8% to 68.8% on the Gulf of Mexico. The percentage of loci heterozygous ranged from 18.6 to 23.6% along the Atlantic coast and from 20.0 to 25.4% in the Gulf of Mexico. The genetic similarities between all contiguous populations from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Corpus Christi, Texas were estimated as 99%, while the same estimate between Corpus Christi and Brownsville, Texas was computed as 93%, indicating a major transition in genetic structure for the Brownsville population of the Laguna Madre. The study revealed that the migration of planktonic oyster larvae is predominantly in a westerly direction along the Gulf of Mexico and that gene flow appears to be disrupted in the region of the Laguna Madre. Evidence has been presented for single gene selection at the Lap-2 and Pgi loci in the form of macrogeographical clines in allele frequencies with changing environmental conditions. 相似文献

Traditionally the coastal zone of the easternmost (Russian) part of the Gulf of Finland has not been considered as an area of active litho- and morphodynamics, but a recent study has shown that the easternmost part of the coastal zone suffers from erosion. Within some coastal segments the shoreline recession rate reaches 2 ?C 2.5?m/year. As well as determining the hydrodynamic reasons for recent erosion acceleration, important geological and geomorphic features of coastal zone which influenced the lithodynamics were established. The Kurortny District of St.Petersburg is located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland to the west of the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Facility. It has special importance as a unique recreation zone of the North-West of Russia. Coastal erosion is one of the most serious problems of the area. The analysis of historical materials, archive aerial photographs and modern high-resolution satellite images have shown that advancing parts of coast are almost non-existant with most sections of the coast being eroded and further retreating. Field monitoring between 2004 and 2007 showed intense damage to sandy beaches during autumn and winter storms and progressive erosion of the dunes system. Among the most important natural reasons for the erosion processes are that the coastline is open to storm waves induced by westerly and south-westerly winds, the geological structure of coastal area (easily eroded Quaternary deposits) and a sediment deficit. In some areas sediment loss was the result of the submarine coastal slope morphology (a steep slope of a narrow submarine terrace within the area of sediment drift discharge), with erosion of an alongshore submarine sandy terrace and erosion runnels at the depth 8?C12?m. The situation becomes worse due to anthropogenic impact. The southern coastal zone dynamics are also very active. According to an aerial and satellite photos analysis from 1975?C1976 to 1989?C1990, sandy beaches to the west of Lebyazhye village were eroded up to 30?m, and near Bolshaya Izora village up to 70?m. The comparison of coastine GPSsurvey with old nautical and topographic charts published in the 1980s shows the considerable change. 相似文献

Distribution and bioaccumulation of organochlorine pesticides along the Black Sea coast 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sediment, mussel, and seawater samples were collected three times during 2001–2003 at nine sampling stations along the mid-Black
Sea coast of Turkey. The samples were analyzed with GC-ECD for contents of various organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the
environment. DDT and its metabolites were detected at concentrations significantly above the detection limits. The highest
concentrations of DDT metabolites measured in the sediment and mussel samples were 35.9 and 14.0 ng/g wet weight respectively.
Considerable levels of aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, endosulfan sulphate, and HCB were also detected
in the sediment, mussel, or seawater samples. Although these persistent toxic compounds have been banned for some years in
Turkey, they may still be used illegally in some regions, contributing to their significant levels in the environment. The
biota–sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) estimated for DDT and its metabolites in mussels was 2.9, which is nearly two times
higher than the benchmark of 1.7. In spite of such high BSAF values observed for these toxic compounds, their levels in mussels
were significantly below the international legal limits recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations. Edible biota from the waterbodies examined may thus still be considered safe for human consumption at this time.
However, as pollutants can biomagnify through the food chain over time, further routine sampling and analysis of biota along
the Black Sea coast are warranted in order to better assess the threat of OCPs to public health in the region. 相似文献

Relationships among populations (southeast Atlantic and northern Gulf coast, USA) of a ubiquitous, estuarine, harpacticoid
copepod (Microarthridion littorale Poppe) were estimated using sequence data from two loci: one mitochondrial [cytochrome b (Cyt b)] and one nuclear [first internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA (ITS-1)]. Copepods were collected from seven estuaries
in 1997/98. Allelic phylogenies based on both genes were generally concordant, and suggested that M. littorale populations are structured over large geographic scales (hundreds of kilometers). Three well-supported groups were found
in both gene trees comprising clades of alleles sampled from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. Alleles from the Savannah,
Georgia sample formed a monophyletic group using the Cyt b data, but this clade was not distinguishable with comparable ITS-1 data. A single specimen from Louisiana was classified
in different clades depending on the locus assayed.
