Summary. Workers of the amblyoponine species Mystrium rogeri employ trail communication during recruitment to food sources and new nest sites. The trail pheromone originates from a hitherto
unknown sternal gland located in the 7th abdominal sternite. The recruiting ant deposits the gland secretions by a special
gaster-dragging behavior. The recruitment behavior can be complemented by a rapid vertical body shaking performed by some
recruiting ants inside the nest. M. rogeri workers possess a large pygidial gland, the secretion of which elicits a repellent response in other ant species.

Summary Chemical communication plays a very important role in the lives of many social insects. Several different types of pheromones (species-specific chemical messengers) of ants have been described, particularly those involved in recruitment, recognition, territorial and alarm behaviours. Properties of pheromones include activity in minute quantities (thus requiring sensitive methods for chemical analysis) and specificity (which can have chemotaxonomic uses). Summary. The myrmecophilous beetles, Zyras comes (Staphylinidae) and Diaritiger fossulatus (Pselaphidae) are guests of the black shining ant Lasius fuliginosus. Host worker ants never attacked these beetles, and often gave regurgitant to Z. comes following tactile communication with the beetle. By contrast, the workers from colonies without the myrmecophiles showed
hostile responses towards Z. comes before tactile contact, but were not aware of D. fossulatus until contact. In L. fuliginosus, workers within a colony shared profiles, but the profiles differed among colonies. GC analyses showed that both Z. comes and D. fossulatus beetles had the same hydrocarbons as L. fuliginosus, and the profiles were more similar to those of the host colony workers than the foreign workers. Both Z. comes and D. fossulatus appear to imitate the hydrocarbon profile of their host workers, allowing integrating into the host nest. A Y-maze bioassay
indicated that Z. comes can follow the trail pheromone of L. fuliginosus. This suggests that Z. comes may detect other chemical signals of L. fuliginosus to keep closer interactions with the workers.

Summary. Trail-following behavior of Lasius japonicus was colony-specific in the field, while trail pheromone activity was not. We found that the footprint substance caused colony-specific trail-following behavior only when working in conjunction with the trail pheromone. The footprint substance alone did not lead the workers to follow trails. The substance consisted mainly of hydrocarbons with composition almost identical to that of cuticular hydrocarbons, except for the absence of n-alkanes. Nestmate workers shared footprint hydrocarbon profiles as well as cuticular hydrocarbons, but the profiles differed among colonies. We therefore consider that the footprint hydrocarbon profiles serve as the trail discrimination signal in L. japonicus. 相似文献

Summary. This study reports on the impact of insecticidal resistance on the diel periodicity of the calling behaviour and pheromone
production of different-aged virgin females of the obliquebanded leafroller (OBL), Choristoneura rosaceana. While both resistant (R) and susceptible (S) females initiated calling on the first night following emergence, the periodicity
of the calling behaviour, as determined by the mean onset time of calling (MOTC) and the mean time spent calling (MTSC) over
the first six nights of calling, differed between the two strains. R females started calling significantly later in the night.
However, as the MOTC of R females advanced with age but did not do so in S individuals, the difference between strains was
more pronounced in younger than older females. Furthermore, R females spent less time calling than S individuals. However,
the MTSC increased as a function of age in both R and S females, so the difference between strains remained fairly constant
for each night of calling. The major component of OBL sex pheromone, the Z11-14: Ac, determined at peak calling activity,
significantly declined with female age. Overall, pheromone production was lower in R females than in S females, with the difference
being more pronounced in younger than in older individuals. Thus, resistant females may have a lower mating success. The mating
success of both R and S strain males did not vary with the number of previous matings acquired. With regard to males, although
there was a significant decline in spermatophore size with successive matings, there was no significant difference between
strains. However, R males are smaller and may be disadvantaged through female choice and/or may respond differently to pheromone
source compared with S individuals. If the reproductive success of both sexes is affected, this may have a profound influence
on the dynamics of insecticidal resistance in the presence or absence of selection in OBL populations.

Summary. Analysis of South-East Asian troidine swallowtails revealed high variability in the content of aristolochic acids among individuals.
The presence or absence of these compounds depends on the Aristolochia species available as food plant for the larvae. Only one plant species (Aristolochia philippinensis) contained a high concentration of aristolochic acids, while other species from various localities contained none or only
marginal amounts. Whether aristolochic acids have a distinct function in chemical defense of these swallowtails is still an
open question.

Summary. The bolas spider, Mastophora hutchinsoni, attracts Lacinipolia renigera and Tetanolita mynesalis males by mimicking the female moth sex pheromones. However, as the prey species use completely different pheromone blends
we conducted experiments to determine how this is accomplished by the predator. The periodicity of L. renigera mate-seeking activities occurs early in the scotophase, whereas male T. mynesalis are active late at night, corresponding with periods when these moths are captured by the spider. The pheromone blend of
early-flying L. renigera interferes with attraction of late-flying T. mynesalis to its pheromone in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting the spider must always produce a single sub-optimal “compromise”
blend for both species or that it adjusts its allomonal blend to optimize capture of the respective prey species at different
times during the night. We delayed (L. renigera) or advanced (T. mynesalis) the periodicity of male activity through photoperiodic manipulation and found that the bolas spider attracted both prey
species outside their normal activity windows. These results support the idea that bolas spiders produce components of both
species at all times rather than producing the pheromone of each prey species at different times of the night. However, using
coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography, we also demonstrated that the spider decreases its emission of the L. renigera pheromone over the course of the night. This modification should reduce the behavioral antagonism of the L. renigera pheromone on T. mynesalis males and increase the predator's success of attracting T. mynesalis during this prey's normal activity window late at night.

Summary. Leaf cutting ants live in symbiosis with a basidiomycete fungus that is exploited as a source of nutrients for the ant larvae.
Tests of fungus transport demonstrated that Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus workers discriminate concolonial fungus from alien fungus, and rejected the latter. Larvae and pupae of the ant were used
as controls. Chemical analysis of the fungus revealed a great similarity between its hydrocarbon profile and that found on
the ant brood. Experiments with lures showed that chemical extracts from the fungus are responsible for this discrimination
process. Moreover, the presence of brood inside the fungus seemed to be important for discrimination of the fungus by workers.
Resident workers accepted concolonial broodless fungus less than concolonial fungus inoculated with brood odor. Fungus seems
to acquire colonial odor passively, simply by contact with the brood. The impact of fungus volume present in the nest on closure
of the colony is discussed. We show here for the first time the importance of a symbiotic vegetal organism in colonial recognition
in social insects.

Summary. We tested the hypothesis that aggregation behaviour of the
firebrat, Thermobia domestica (Packard) (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), an
inhabitant of enclosed microhabitats, is mediated, at least in part, by
a pheromone. Individual insects were released into the central chamber
of a 3-chambered olfactometer and test stimuli were placed in lateral
chambers. Paper discs previously exposed for 3 days to 10 female, male,
or juvenile T. domestica were all preferred by female, male, or juvenile
T. domestica over unexposed paper discs, indicating the presence of an
aggregation/arrestment pheromone. In additional experiments, frass and
scales from female T. domestica, tested singly and in combination,
proved not to be the source of the pheromone. Physical contact was
required for pheromone recognition, indicating that the pheromone
arrests rather than attracts conspecifics. Arrestment by the
long-tailed silverfish, Ctenolepisma longicaudata Escherich
(Thysanura: Lepismatidae), but not by the common silverfish, Lepisma
saccharina L. (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), to T. domestica exposed
paper discs suggests closer phylogenetic relatedness between C.
longicaudata and T. domestica, than between C.
longicaudata and L. saccharina. Whether C.
longicaudata or L. saccharina produce an aggregation
signal, and whether T. domestica respond to this signal is unknown.

Summary. An aphidiid wasp, Paralipsis eikoae, was associated with both Lasius niger and L. sakagamii attending the wormwood root aphid Sappaphis piri. An L. sakagamii worker was observed carrying a winged female P. eikoae to its nest with its mandible, but it did not kill the wasp. Once accepted by the ants, the wasp often mounted and rubbed
against the worker ants and sometimes teased them to regurgitate food to itself. No workers in the colony attacked the wasp.
Conspecific foreign workers, however, viciously attacked the wasp when encountered. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses
showed that the accepted wasp had complex cuticular hydrocarbons that were very similar to those of its host ants, whereas
the winged wasps collected outside the ant nest showed only a series of n-alkanes. Additionally, the accepted wasp had a hydrocarbon profile closer to that of its host ants than to the conspecific
foreign ants. We believe the wasp mimics ant cuticular hydrocarbons to integrate into the ant nest, acquiring the hydrocarbons
by mounting and rubbing against the ants. In contrast, the cuticular hydrocarbons of the emerged wasp contained larval and
pupal hydrocarbons of L. sakagamii that were also similar to those of L. niger. Both ant species rejected adult workers of the other species but accepted their larvae and pupae. We suggest that the emerged
P. eikoae mimics the cuticular hydrocarbons of these Lasius larvae and pupae, which allows P. eikoae to be accepted by both L. sakagamii and L. niger.

Summary. The African stink ants (Pachycondyla tarsata) lay recruitment trails with secretions from sternal glands. The glandular secretions consist of 10 compounds, 9 of which
have been chemically identified. One of the substances, 9-heptadecanone, elicits trail following behavior in P. tarsata workers that have before been stimulated by a sucessful scout ant.

Summary. Sensitivities to methyl eugenol of three sibling species in the Bactrocera dorsalis complex were compared. The degree of species sensitivity to methyl eugenol, i.e. B. dorsalis > B. papayae > B. carambolae (in decreasing order), was concomitant with the species age-related response to methyl eugenol as previously reported. The
ability to consume methyl eugenol by the three sibling species showed similar trend - the average ME consumption per male
was 0.70 ml for B. dorsalis, 0.58 ml B. papayae and 0.18 μl B. carambolae. Results obtained were discussed in relation to area-wide control of fruit fly.

Multiple-queen (polygyne) colonies of the introduced fire ant Solenopsis invicta present a paradox for kin selection theory. Egg-laying queens within these societies are, on average, unrelated to one another,
and the numbers of queens per colony are high, so that workers appear to raise new sexuals that are no more closely related
to them than are random individuals in the population. This paradox could be resolved if workers discriminate between related
and unrelated nestmate sexuals in important fitness-related contexts. This study examines the possibility of such nepotism
using methods that combine the following features: (1) multiple relevant behavioral assays, (2) colonies with an unmanipulated
family structure, (3) multiple genetic markers with no known phenotypic effects, and (4) a statistical technique for distinguishing
between nepotism and potentially confounding phenomena. We estimated relatedness between interactants in polygyne S. invicta colonies in two situations, workers tending egg-laying queens and workers feeding maturing winged queens. In neither case
did we detect a significant positive value of relatedness that would implicate nepotism. We argue that the non-nepotistic
strategies displayed by these ants reflect historical selection pressures experienced by native populations, in which nestmate
queens are highly related to one another. The markedly different genetic structure in native populations may favor the operation
of stronger higher-level selection that effectively opposes weaker individual-level selection for nepotistic interactions
within nests.

Summary. A widely distributed host race of Tyria jacobaeae lives on Senecio jacobaea and related species and accumulates pyrrolizidine alkaloids (“PA race”), another race, which is restricted to the Alps and
found on Petasites paradoxus, sequesters sesquiterpenes, such as petasol and isopetasol. Nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene show
1% sequence divergence, indicating that genetical differences exist between the PA exploiting and the terpene-sequestering
host races of T. jacobaeae. This finding suggests that both host races of T. jacobaeae must have been separated for some time already, possibly since the Pleistocene.

In the polydomous ant species Cataglyphis iberica, nests belonging to the same colony are completely separated during hibernation. In order to examine whether this separation
induces changes both in the hydrocarbon profile and in recognition ability between adult nestmates, we separated groups of
workers for several months under two different conditions: at hibernation temperature and at room temperature. At room temperature,
recognition remained unchanged but separation led to longer mutual antennations relative to non-separated controls. When half
of a colony was placed under hibernation conditions, antennal interactions also increased in duration and a few aggressive
interactions emerged between separated ants. This aggressiveness never reached the intercolonial level observed in this species.
In both cases, the hydrocarbon profiles showed differences between individuals after separation while remaining homogeneous
within each nest. This chemical modification may induce the longer antennations observed. After separated groups were reunited,
individuals recovered their previous antennation pattern and a convergence in hydrocarbon profiles was again observed. These
concurrent observations suggest that hydrocarbons are transferred between nestmates. In C. iberica, the formation of the colonial odor seems to follow the “Gestalt” model which allows all satellite nests of a colony to have a common colonial odor. In the field, temporary nest isolation
during hibernation may induce divergence between satellites. The role of adult transport in connecting nests during the active
season to obtain an efficient Gestalt odor is discussed.

Alkaloid tolerance in Manduca sexta and phylogenetically related sphingids (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary. Nicotine tolerance is well known for Manduca sexta. It also occurs in several other sphingids of the subfamilies Macroglossinae and Sphinginae. Only members of the subfamily
Smerinthinae appear to be more susceptible to nicotine intoxication. Phylogenetic trees have been reconstructed from mitochondrial
16S rDNA and nuclear DNA to map nicotine tolerance.?The nicotine binding site of both α-subunits of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) have been amplified and sequenced. No apparent amino acid substitution
can be seen in the putative nicotine binding site of the α-subunits of nAChR from nicotine tolerant and nicotine sensitive sphingids. Thus, a simple target-site modification can be
ruled out as a cause for nicotine tolerance. This finding agrees with feeding experiments: larvae of M. sexta and other sphingids of the Macroglossinae and Sphinginae not only tolerated nicotine, but also many other alkaloids that
affect neuroreceptors other than acetylcholine receptors (nAChR, mAChR).?Only 10 to 20% of nicotine injected into larvae of
nicotine-tolerant taxa could be recovered later as free nicotine, nicotine N-oxide or cotinine, i.e., 80 to 90% must have been converted to polar conjugates or degradation products which are not detectable with the methods
applied. Usually more than 98% of the recoverable alkaloids were found in the faeces. Excretion reached a maximum 6 h after
injection in tolerant taxa. Larvae of Manduca sexta, which were reared on a nicotine-rich diet, showed higher nicotine degradation and faster nicotine elimination than na?ve
larvae. Application of the cytochrome P450 inhibitor SKF 525A (proadifen) reduced the formation of nicotine N-oxide and the rate of alkaloid degradation. Thus, an
inducible detoxification mechanism, coupled with a rapid and inducible excretion, appear to be a strategy in Sphingidae that
helps them to live on host plants rich in otherwise toxic secondary metabolites.

Summary. Fungal pathogenesis of the sea fan Gorgonia ventalina has developed on the Belize barrier reef during 1997 and 1998. The disease incidence (= percent of infected sea fans) remained
unchanged at two sites along the barrier reef crest between years. However, the incidence increased significantly at an offshore
atoll during that time, as did the virulence (= percent tissue loss). Grazing by the gorgonian specialist mollusc Cyphoma gibbosum increased on infected sea fans. Sea fan responses to fungal infection included significant decreases in a furano-germacrene
compound with antifeedant activity and significant increases in the concentration of sclerites at the site of infection. Feeding
assays utilizing C. gibbosum and a natural assemblage of reef fishes indicated sclerites are an effective deterrent, to both consumers, at both pre- and
post-infected concentrations. In contrast, the compound was only deterrent to the fish, and only at concentrations found in
pre-infected sea fans. These data indicate that sea fan pathogenesis can directly and indirectly affect population health
via virulent tissue necrosis and pathogen-mediated reductions in grazer resistance, respectively.

Summary. The ability to perceive and respond to phytochemicals that reliably indicate poor suitability of a potential host plant confers
a selective advantage to ovipositing female swallowtail butterflies. Papilio glaucus females are generalists that nonetheless do not oviposit on red bay (Persea borbonia: Lauraceae). Red bay is toxic to P. glaucus neonates but is commonly found in habitats alongside their principal host plant, Magnolia virginiana, in central Florida. The hypothesis that deterrent compounds present in the leaves of red bay mediate its rejection by P. glaucus was evaluated in our study. Florida populations of P. glaucus did not oviposit on host leaves sprayed with the methanol extract of red bay foliage, although they accepted solvent-treated
and untreated tulip tree leaves in 3 choice bioassays. Additionally, tulip tree leaves sprayed with methanolic extracts of
red bay also deterred oviposition by P. glaucus females from Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, although these populations do
not naturally encounter red bay. Clearly, deterrent compounds found within this non-host are the basis of its rejection by
populations of P. glaucus and such recognition is fundamental to the species, not just a reflection of local adaptations.

Role of surface chemical signals in egg cannibalism and intraguild predation in ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary. The eggs of some ladybirds are known to be toxic to intraguild ladybird predators. However, this defence is of little value
if the eggs are killed before their toxicity becomes apparent. The results presented in this paper indicate that chemicals
on the surface of the eggs of two species of ladybirds signal the relative risk of cannibalism and intraguild predation. In
Adalia bipunctata and Coccinella septempunctata, 87% of the chemicals are alkanes. Each species of ladybird is less reluctant to eat their own eggs than those of the other
species. This asymmetry is to be expected because there is a greater risk to ladybirds from intraguild predation than cannibalism.
Similar alkanes to those on the surface of the eggs of A. bipunctata are present in tracks left by larvae and on the elytra of the adults of this species. Those in the larval tracks deter females
from ovipositing in patches of prey already being attacked by their larvae and those on the elytra are used in mate recognition.
That different context dependent messages could be signalled by similar chemicals is an example of semiochemical parsimony.
