Pelagic and non-pelagic development occurs within a single population of the nudibranchTenellia pallida (Alder and Hancock) from South Carolina (USA). Both developmental types occurred simultaneously, under identical conditions, and without the aid of nurse eggs. Adults laid either ≈70 μm diameter eggs that hatched as pelagic (planktotrophic?) veligers in 68 to 122 h, or ≈100 μm diameter eggs that became well-developed veligers, metamorphosed within their egg capsules, and hatched as shelled juveniles in 140 to 190 h (15°C, 30‰ S). Adults that produced pelagic larvae laid more eggs per day and per egg mass and twice the daily egg volume produced by adults of the opposing type.  相似文献

Female blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) with mature embryos have a spawning migration in which they: (1) undergo ebb-tide transport for movement seaward from estuaries, (2) release their larvae, and (3) reverse direction by undergoing flood-tide transport for up-estuary movement. The study determined whether ebb-tide transport during the spawning migration is based upon an endogenous rhythm in vertical migration. Under constant conditions in a rectangular container, which limited horizontal and vertical movements, females with young and mature embryos had circatidal rhythms (periods=12.11-12.95 h) in migratory restlessness (swimming activity) and egg maintenance behavior (abdominal pumping). However, the rhythms were out of phase, as migratory restlessness occurred during the expected time of ebb tide in the field, and egg maintenance behavior, during the time of flood tide. Under constant conditions in vertical columns (1.32 m high), crabs with mature embryos had a circatidal rhythm (periods=12.2-13.7 h) in which they had frequent bouts of swimming to the surface of the column during the expected time of ebb tide in the field and remained on the bottom during the time of flood tide. This rhythm was not present in crabs with young embryos and disappeared after larval release. Thus, an endogenous rhythm in vertical migration does underlie the ebb-tide transport behavior of ovigerous blue crabs with mature embryos during their spawning migration.  相似文献

Effects of maternal food environment and season were examined during spring and autumn on females, eggs and nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus, in different natural prey suspensions or cultures of Rhodomonas baltica. Females sampled in spring were in general larger, had higher protein content, and showed higher egg production and hatching rates, than in autumn. The cumulative egg production was almost double in spring compared to autumn (females fed R. baltica). Females had higher content of free amino acids (FAA) and free essential amino acids (EAA) in autumn than in the spring. Also, the FAA contents in eggs and nauplii were higher in autumn than in spring. In contrast, the composition of EAA in eggs was constant between seasons, indicating maternal regulation. The highest cumulative egg production was correlated with a high similarity in the free pool of EAA in the food suspension and the female copepod. Thus, the data support the hypothesis that similarity in the free pool of EAA of diet and female promotes high fecundity and egg hatching success in C. finmarchicus.  相似文献

The timing of gamete release by fucoid algae, although known to be restricted to calm days is not clearly understood within a circadian time scale. The need for externally fertilizing species to avoid gamete dilution suggests that in wave-exposed areas spawning may occur during particular tidal phases. However, this may differ between mating systems, as selfing species may be less affected by gamete dilution. In this study, two different approaches were used to determine when egg release occurs during the tidal cycle in two sister species with different mating systems. First, egg settlement of Fucus vesiculosus (dioecious) and Fucus spiralis (selfing hermaphrodite) was quantified on removable substrates (egg settlement disks) every day for 2 months and settlement patterns were used to statistically estimate the radius of a circle that would encompass 99% of each patch of settled eggs (the egg dispersal radius). Also, egg release was quantified every 2 h during the tidal cycle. A significantly larger egg dispersal radius (P < 0.02) was found for F. spiralis than F. vesiculosus, and this difference was somewhat site dependent with a greater difference between species in exposed sites. The egg dispersal radius was negatively correlated with significant wave height and positively correlated with sea surface temperature for both the species (P < 0.05), with a greater effect of both the factors for F. spiralis than for F. vesiculosus. Egg release during the tidal cycle was variable between species and experiments, with F. vesiculosus releasing more eggs, later in the day, and at a lower tide, than F. spiralis, which released fewer eggs, throughout the day and at all tides. The dioecious species, F. vesiculosus, may have developed a specific adaptation for timing the egg release to periods when emersed in exposed habitats to avoid rapid dilution of gametes that require outcrossing for fertilization. On the other hand, egg release for F. spiralis, which can self-fertilize, occurred both when emersed and immersed, suggesting this species has developed less synchrony with specific environmental factors. Site dependence also suggests local wave conditions can modulate timing of release. The data are consistent with the relaxation of the selective constraints of water motion on fertilization success in a selfing hermaphrodite, relative to an obligate outcrossing species. Results support the idea that species with different mating systems evolve different sensitivities to environmental cues for gamete release with specific implications for inbreeding and successful external fertilization in the ocean.  相似文献

Oxygen supply inside egg masses has been reported as a constraint of embryo development. Many species that enclose their eggs in jelly masses or ovicapsules have strategies to avoid or reduce intracapsular hypoxia. In some amphibian species, a decrease in the wall thickness of the egg capsule over time produces an increase in oxygen conductance of the wall, reducing the problem of intracapsular oxygen limitation. Previous studies of gastropods have reported a decrease in the thickness of the capsules during development. However, there are no studies relating capsule thinning to the oxygen limitation problem in this group. This study links the thinning of egg capsules with oxygen diffusion as a possible mechanism to reduce or avoid hypoxia inside the capsules of the gastropod Fusitriton oregonensis. Capsule thickness, capsule area, oxygen partial pressure inside and outside the capsule, and oxygen consumption of the embryos at early and late developmental stages were measured. The conductance and the diffusion coefficients of the capsule were estimated using these measurements. Results showed that (1) capsule thickness decreased throughout development by about 50%, (2) oxygen consumption of embryos increased from early to late stages, (3) oxygen partial pressure inside the capsule did not change during development, (4) conductance coefficient increased with time, and (5) estimation of diffusion coefficient was lower than amphibian egg jelly, shark capsules, egg fishes, and eggs of giant cuttlefish. The reduction in the thickness of the capsule wall and the associated increase in its conductance during embryonic development may reduce oxygen constraints, especially at late developmental stages.  相似文献

Adult Scolelepis cf. fuliginosa Claparède, raised from laboratory-born larvae, have been cultivated at a temperature of 18.5°C for weeks or months. They were offered artificial food only. They attain sexual maturity after 39 to 157 days. As soon as sexing is possible, the polychaetes are transferred to small dishes and paired. Egg laying extends throughout the whole life cycle at 4.6 day intervals; this interval tends to increase with age and size. Egg production varies greatly, at the beginning of reproduction, productivity increases, then fluctuates considerably around a mean value which may be very different in different pairs. There are also important variations in the total number of eggs between pairs; the reasons for this are still unknown. An hypothesis is presented on the factors controlling egg release: it is suggested that the worms' energy budget makes egg laying possible only in winter and spring; at higher temperatures, energy release is insufficient for egg production, owing to the poor nutritional level. According to this hypothesis, temperature affects reproduction indirectly.  相似文献

Life history and reproductive strategies influence population dynamics at the inter- and intra-specific level. Environmental conditions suitable for gonad development and spawning, the reproductive range, may be a smaller portion of the broader species distribution. The only known breeding population of veined rapa whelks (Rapana venosa) in North America is in Chesapeake Bay, USA. There is considerable interest in the potential reproductive range of this non-indigenous species given the rapa whelk’s negative impacts on commercial shellfish species in both its native and introduced ranges. Weight-specific reproductive output is described for wild caught Chesapeake Bay rapa whelks maintained in flow-through mesocosms for 2 years. Measured reproductive output within and between egg capsule deposition seasons (years) in relation to water temperature, salinity, daylength, and female size is used to describe the rapa whelk’s reproductive range. Egg capsule production is influenced by seasonal and absolute water temperatures as well as seasonal daylength cycles. Egg capsule deposition by Chesapeake Bay rapa whelks begins at water temperatures of approximately 18°C and continues for 11–15 weeks. Forty to 70% of female whelks deposited egg capsules in most weeks during this season, producing 150–200 egg capsules female−1 week−1. Water temperatures >28°C caused reduced egg capsule production relative to temperatures of 20–25°C. Egg capsule production was positively related to seasonal changes in daylength, and two peaks of egg capsule deposition were observed in the 2001 and 2002 deposition seasons. The combination of declining daylength and higher water temperatures in late summer was associated with the cessation of egg capsule deposition. A lower average weight specific reproductive output in 130–145 mm SL rapa whelks (average 12 ± 1%) than in 90–106 mm SL rapa whelks (average 22 ± 1% of body weight) may reflect a life history that balances the physiological costs of maintaining a large body mass with the production of many planktonic larvae from multiple clutches of egg capsules per breeding season over a 10–15-year lifespan. Estimates of the cumulative day-degree requirements corresponding to the annual initiation of egg capsule deposition were 238 and 236 for 2001 and 2002, respectively. Reproductive output and day-degree requirements for Chesapeake Bay rapa whelks were similar to values calculated from previous studies of native muricids (Eupleura caudata and Urosalpinx cinerea). A latitudinal range of 30–41° (N and S) is predicted as the realized reproductive range for rapa whelk populations on the basis of the day-degree requirements for native whelks and reproductively active invasive rapa whelk populations. The embryos of Harmothoë imbricata (L.) are protected during their early development as a mass under the scales of the female parent. Eggs are shed into the space under the scales through nephridial papillae which elongate and turn dorsally as the female matures. The mass is held together by an adhesive layer surrounding each egg. Maturation begins in September and breeding occurs during March and April, when each female spawns twice in succession. Males contain mature sperm throughout the breeding season and shed only a small proportion at each spawning. As the polychaetes mature, pairs are formed with the male resting on the dorsal surface of the female. When the female spawns, the male sheds sperm over the egg mass and the two animals then separate. The sperm has a long acrosome to penetrate the adhesive layer around the egg. Embryo-protecting species in other groups of polychaeces show parallel specialization in sperm structure and in breeding behaviour. A chronology has been established for the development of embryos up to their release from the parent, and this can be used to estimate the spawning date of females with embryo masses collected on the shore. Individuals grow at widely varying rates after settlement on the shore, and no year classes could be detected in the population. All individuals spawn in the first spring after settlement, and at least some survive to spawn again in one or more subsequent springs.  相似文献

The pelagic larvae of the polychaete Marenzelleria viridis (Verrill, 1873) are newcomers among the meroplankton of the Baltic Sea, where they sometimes achieve an abundance of up to 21x106 ind m-3 near the coast, especially in late autumn and even in winter. Benthos samples were collected in the Darss-Zingst bodden chain from April 1992 to 1993 and used to ascertain the reproductive stages of individuals. Development from fertilized egg to benthic juvenile is described on the basis of field material. Details of the morphology of various pelagic stages and the young benthic worm are presented as drawings and scanning electron microscope photographs. In 1992, development of the gametes started in mid-May. The individuals reached maturity in late September after about 20 wk. The first planktonic stage was the fertilized egg. The larvae have initially one and later two pairs of black eyes and, in the 2nd segment, a ciliated pit. Gastrotrochs are present on the third and thereafter every alternate segment. Neuropodial setae develop once the 7-setiger stage is reached. Palps appear at the 10-setiger stage, and neuropodial bidentate hooks from the 10th to 11th setiger on. Metamorphosis into the juvenile benthic stage takes place at the earliest when the 15-setiger stage has been reached. The reproductive seasons of various populations of M. viridis and the developmental patterns of their larvae are discussed, and differences are compared with relevant findings for the spionids.  相似文献

Previous studies have found strong evidences for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) egg retention in fjords, which are caused by the combination of vertical salinity structure, estuarine circulation, and egg specific gravity, supporting small-scaled geographical differentiations of local populations. Here, we assess the variability in egg specific gravity for selected local populations of this species, that is, two fjord-spawning populations and one coastal-spawning population from Northern Norway (66–71°N/10–25°E). Eggs were naturally spawned by raised broodstocks (March to April 2009), and egg specific gravity was measured by a density-gradient column. The phenotype of egg specific gravity was similar among the three local populations. However, the associated variability was greater at the individual level than at the population level. The noted gradual decrease in specific gravity from gastrulation to hatching with an increase just before hatching could be a generic pattern in pelagic marine fish eggs. This study provides needed input to adequately understand and model fish egg dispersal.  相似文献

The marine planktonic copepodsCalanus glacialis Jaschnov andPseudocalanus minutus (Kroyer) typically dominate the copepod biomass in spring under the ice in southeastern Hudson Bay, Canada. Females of both species exhibited significant diel feeding cycles, as measured by gut pigment content, throughout a bloom of ice algae at the ice-water interface in 1986. Periods of grazing correlated well with a nighttime vertical migration by females to within 0.2 m of the ice-water interface, suggesting that feeding took place at or just below the thermohaline boundary between seawater and the interfacial layer containing the ice algae. Seasonal melting of the ice bottom in mid-May resulted in freshening of the surface layer and release of the ice algae into the water column. FemaleC. glacialis andP. minutus responded by ceasing migration to the interface. Gut pigment content, and by reasonable assumption, feeding activity in the water column, increased substantially immediately after this event. In mid-May, the water column phytoplankton consisted of flagellates, sedimenting ice algal cells, and diatoms (Navicula pelagica andChaetoceros sp.) previously found at the interface and then growing in the water column. We conclude that algae growing at the ice-water interface, and sedimenting or actively growing algae derived from this interfacial layer, are a regular and principal source of nutrition for these pelagic copepods during and immediately after the ice algal bloom.  相似文献

In Chinquihue Bay, a sheltered locality in Southern Chile, female Crepidula dilatata Lamarck brood egg masses which differ in intracapsular development. In some, all eggs develop and are hatched as free veliger larvae (indirect development). In others, only some of the eggs develop and hatch as young adults (direct development), the rest being consumed as nurse eggs. Two possible interpretations are considered: intrapopulation variation of developmental pattern in a species, and the coexistence of two sibling species. Stages of the intracapsular development are described and illustrated. Fecundity varies according to size of the female. For females brooding eggs with indirect development it is estimated at between 3840 and 85575 embryos per spawn; for females with eggs undergoing direct development, embryo production per egg mass is estimated at between 70 and 812. A comparison is made between females brooding the two kinds of egg masses. Minor differences exist in adult coloration, shape of egg capsules, egg diameters, spawning season and their abundance and distribution in the intertidal. Brooding females with eggs displaying indirect development are significantly larger than those with eggs of direct development. The latter females form chains subtidally but not intertidally as do females bearing eggs with indirect development. On these females with pelagic larvae, chains frequently include sedentary males which reach large sizes. On basal females with direct development, chains contain mostly other females, suggesting that matings are temporary and by errant males. These results are compared with existing information in the literature for other species both in this genus and in other marine invertebrates. Two distinct modes of development in the common polychaete Scoloplos armiger (O. F. Müller, 1776) occur in the North Sea region: holobenthic development in egg cocoons and pelagic larvae hatching from suspended eggs. In the northern Wadden Sea near the island of Sylt, we observed that egg cocoons are produced intertidally while pelagic larvae originate from the adjacent subtidal zone. A previous genetic comparison between these subtidal and intertidal populations revealed distinct gene pools, suggesting that reproductive differences are not phenotypic but heritable. In this study, crossbreeding experiments show that intertidal and subtidal populations are reproductively isolated. Couples with males and females from different habitats had no offspring. Production of egg cocoons is determined by female origin from the intertidal zone. Pelagic larvae occurred only in couples with subtidal females and subtidal males. Intertidal males have spermatozoa with heads twice as long as those from subtidal males and a significantly shorter flagellum. We suspect that deviating sperm morphology may cause the reproductive breakdown at the fertilization stage. Juveniles hatching from cocoons have shorter anal cirri compared to juveniles that metamorphosed from pelagic larvae. We conclude there to be two sympatric sibling species in S. armiger: 'type I' in intertidal areas, which have egg cocoons, no pelagic larvae, elongated sperm heads, shortened sperm flagella and anal cirri; and a subtidal 'type S', lacking egg cocoons but with pelagic larvae, short sperm heads, long sperm flagella and anal cirri.Communicated by O. Several aspects of buoyancy were studied in the normally pelagic eggs of the sciaenid fish Bairdiella icistia (Jordan and Gilbert). Spawning fish acclimated to a low salinity (15‰) produced larger, more buoyant eggs which had a higher water content than eggs produced by fish living in ordinary sea water (33‰ S). Eggs fertilized in lower salinities were larger and more buoyant than eggs fertilized in higher salinities. The salinity of the medium during the first 5 to 7 min after fertilization had a lasting effect on egg buoyancy, but subsequent transfer to a different salinity also influenced buoyancy. Although egg buoyancy in this species can be influenced by the ambient salinity both before and after spawning, the capacity for adjusting buoyancy is limited, and eggs spawned in salinities lower than 30‰ would probably sink.  相似文献

In natural waterways and estuaries, the understanding of turbulent mixing is critical to the knowledge of sediment transport, stormwater runoff during flood events, and release of nutrient-rich wastewater into ecosystems. In the present study, some field measurements were conducted in a small subtropical estuary with micro-tidal range and semi-diurnal tides during king tide conditions: i.e., the tidal range was the largest for both 2009 and 2010. The turbulent velocity measurements were performed continuously at high-frequency (50Hz) for 60?h. Two acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs) were sampled simultaneously in the middle estuarine zone, and a third ADV was deployed in the upper estuary for 12?h only. The results provided an unique characterisation of the turbulence in both middle and upper estuarine zones under the king tide conditions. The present observations showed some marked differences between king tide and neap tide conditions. During the king tide conditions, the tidal forcing was the dominant water exchange and circulation mechanism in the estuary. In contrast, the long-term oscillations linked with internal and external resonance played a major role in the turbulent mixing during neap tides. The data set showed further that the upper estuarine zone was drastically less affected by the spring tide range: the flow motion remained slow, but the turbulent velocity data were affected by the propagation of a transient front during the very early flood tide motion at the sampling site.  相似文献

The fate of pelagic diatoms in marine coastal aphotic sediments was investigated from sediment profiles in western Scandinavian waters. We used three independent methods to estimate pigment pools in the sediment: (1) fluorometry, (2) high-performance liquid chromatography and (3) pigments estimated from germinable diatom cells, using the dilution extinction method. A strong positive relationship with an intercept close to zero was observed between fucoxanthin, a marker of diatoms, and chlorophyll a. The fucoxanthin/chl a ratio was on average 1.05, which was similar to monocultures of dominating diatom taxa, indicating that sedimentary chl a was to a large extent of diatom origin. Chl a and fucoxanthin correlated significantly and positively with, and where within the same order of magnitude as, corresponding substances predicted from live diatom cell numbers obtained with the dilution extinction method. This indicates that a major part of surficial sediment chl a was bound in live cells of pelagic diatoms. There was a consistent change in viable cells with sediment depth and with timing of dominating taxa, with the non-spore-forming Skeletonema costatum dominating in the surface sediment in March and May, while the spore forming Chaetoceros spp. dominated deep in the sediment and during periods outside of the spring bloom (February and August). This indicates that chl a is bound in several different cell pools with different degradation rates, depending on diatom taxonomy. Thus, diatoms originating predominantly from the spring bloom may provide an important direct link in the pelagic–benthic coupling in this area.  相似文献

Copepod resting eggs are abundant in the seabed of many bays and estuaries where they provide a potential source of recruits for growth of planktonic populations. In the northeastern Gulf of Mexico the copepod Centropages hamatus (Lillejeborg) occurs in the water column only during the late fall, winter and early spring. The species produces subitaneous and diapause eggs, and both egg types have been found in the seabed. We determined the longevity of these two egg types to ascertain their potential for contributing to the growth of the planktonic population and for sustaining a persistent egg bank. Eggs were collected from females and incubated in the laboratory under temperature and oxygen conditions chosen to simulate field conditions. The diapause eggs were also exposed to sulfide. The total hatching success of subitaneous eggs in two experiments declined from highs of 78 and 97% to zero after 60 and 90 d of exposure to anoxia. The total hatching success of diapause eggs that were exposed to anoxia for 90 d however was typically greater than 80%. Some diapause eggs hatched after being incubated under anoxia for 437 d. Diapause eggs survived longer at ambient field temperatures when incubated under anoxia (437 d) compared to normoxia (118 d). Exposure to sulfide did not result in greater mortality of diapause eggs compared to anoxia alone. Diapause eggs that were incubated at ambient field temperatures did not hatch when exposed to normoxia until the temperature dropped to <20 °C. The results of this study suggest that C.␣hamatus sustain a short-term reserve of subitaneous eggs in the seabed that provides recruits for the current year's population. The greater longevity of diapause eggs suggests that they sustain the seasonal reappearance of the species year after year in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. However, the contribution of diapause eggs of C. hamatus from the Gulf of Mexico to a persistent egg bank is questionable since hatching ceased after 437 d. The impact of a realistic warming scenario on the metabolic physiology of early cephalopod (squid Loligo vulgaris and cuttlefish Sepia officinalis) life stages was investigated. During exposure to the warming conditions (19 °C for the western coast of Portugal in 2100), the increase in oxygen consumption rates throughout embryogenesis was much steeper in squid (28-fold increase) than in cuttlefish (11-fold increase). The elevated catabolic activity–accelerated oxygen depletion within egg capsules, which exacerbated metabolic suppression toward the end of embryogenesis. Squid late-stage embryos appear to be more impacted by warming via metabolic suppression than cuttlefish embryos. At all temperature scenarios, the transition from encapsulated embryos to planktonic paralarvae implied metabolic increments higher than 100 %. Contrary to the nektobenthic strategy of cuttlefish newborns, the planktonic squid paralarvae rely predominantly on pulsed jet locomotion that dramatically increases their energy requirements. In the future, hatchlings will require more food per unit body size and, thus, feeding intake success will be crucial, especially for squid with high metabolic rates and low levels of metabolic reserves.  相似文献

 Population genetic theory predicts that marine animal species with planktonic larvae will have less genetic structure than those with direct development. We compared the genetic structure of four species of littorinid snails – two with planktonic egg capsules that hatch as planktonic larvae and two with benthic egg masses that hatch as crawl-away juveniles. We used DNA sequencing and single stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) to assess sequence variation in a 480 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and then used an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) to estimate Φst for populations from the northeastern Pacific coast. One of the two direct-developing species, Littorina subrotundata, had a moderate amount of population structure (Φst=0.209) as expected but the other direct-developing species, L. sitkana, was nearly fixed for a single haplotype that made it impossible to precisely estimate Φst. One of the two planktonic-developing species, L. scutulata, did not show any significant population structure (Φst=0.004). In contrast to our expectations, the other planktonic-developing species, L. plena, showed some weak but statistically significant population structure (Φst=0.052). We discuss how differences in population genetic structure between species with the same type of development may reflect differences in their historical demography. The effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), desiccation and conditions in tidal pools on embryonic survival were examined for two common pulmonate limpets that lay intertidal benthic egg masses on rocky shores in New Zealand: Benhamina obliquata and Siphonaria australis. Field surveys and manipulative experiments were conducted between December 2006 and September 2007 in the Wellington region of New Zealand (41°17′S, 174°47′E). Egg mass deposition sites in the field were species-specific: B. obliquata deposited eggs primarily in shaded crevices, whereas S. australis predominantly deposited egg masses in the sun and in tidal pools. For both species, however, embryonic mortality was greater in egg masses that had been in full sun compared to shade. For S. australis, there was also high mortality in egg masses in tidal pools or desiccated compared to those that remained submerged in flowing seawater at low tide. In outdoor experiments, embryonic mortality was also always greatest for egg masses exposed to full sun, and lowest for those in shaded treatments. Mortality was also higher if egg masses were in simulated tidal pools, and for S. australis, if desiccated, compared to those submerged in flowing seawater. Periods of particularly sunny conditions with high temperatures also resulted in higher overall mortality. Finally, egg masses of both species that were initially deposited in the shade had greater mortality in response to subsequent UV exposure compared to egg masses initially deposited in full sun. Results from this study suggest that the egg masses of these two species are highly vulnerable to UVR, as well as other intertidal stressors. Embryos of both of these species may be at risk of high mortality particularly during summer when extreme conditions of UV intensity and high temperature coincide with low tide cycles.
