Aspects of the reproductive biology of the common shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) were studied in Port Erin Bay, Isle of Man, Irish Sea. Size at sexual maturity was determined from the proportions of ovigerous females and of females with maturing ovaries. The size at which 50% of females are mature is estimated (±95% confidence intervals) as 12.5±0.48 mm carapace length. Based on the proportions of ovigerous females and of mature females, the main breeding season was from January to June. Mean ovarian dry weights indicated two broods (winter and summer), with females bearing winter broods (WB) having higher gonad indices than those with summer broods (SB). WB females with non-eyed eggs and with eyed eggs differed in the regression of ovarian dry weight on carapace length, indicating preparation for laying a second brood. In both broods the moult stages of berried females were related to egg stage. Moulting will occur following the release of the brood. During embryonic development, mean egg length and egg volume were larger in all stages, and the mean dry weight of individual eggs of all stages heavier, in WB than in SB; there was no difference in egg number, however. Consequently, reproductive investment, the proportion of female weight devoted to egg production, was 67% higher in WB (0.20±0.04) than in SB (0.12±0.03). There is a significant effect of egg volume on brood weight, but not on egg number. In both broods, egg number was a negatively allometric function of female body size in non-eyed eggs and an isometric function of female body size in eyed eggs. Brood mortality during incubation was higher in SB (17%) than WB (10%). Differences in the reproductive variables and investment between the two broods of C. crangon are discussed in the light of reproductive strategies and life history.Communicated by J.P. Ammonia excretion of individual Crangon franciscorum Stimpson was monitored in response to ingestion of single meals. The three experimental diets were tubificids, mysids and fish. Ammonia excretion was also monitored for individual shrimp which had been starved. The rate of ammonia excretion was higher for fed than for starved individuals in all cases. Ammonia excretion rates were higher for shrimp which were fed tubificids than those fed the other diets. The rate of excretion was influenced by both weight of the individual and the amount ingested of each diet. Ammonia excretion was influenced by dietary factors other than nitrogen content of the diet or the quantity ingested. The data suggest that field estimates of ammonia excretion based on the excretion rates of starved animals may be underestimates. The recent feeding history of an organism influences the rate of ammonia excretion as well as the relationship between the rate of excretion and weight. 相似文献

A couple of experiments were conducted to estimate the optimal temperature effect on growth of Chinese shrimp (Penaeus chinensis). Climate models predict that the average temperature in the North Sea could increase 3–5 °C and surface-waters pH could decrease 0.3–0.5 pH units by the end of this century. Consequently, we investigated the combined effect of decreased pH (control pH 8.1; decreased pH 7.6) and temperature (control 6.7 °C; elevated 9.5 °C) on the hatching timing and success, and the zoeal development, survival, feeding, respiration and growth (up to stage IV zoea) of the northern shrimp, Pandalus borealis. At elevated temperature, embryos hatched 3 days earlier, but experienced 2–4 % reduced survival. Larvae developed 9 days faster until stage IV zoea under elevated temperature and exhibited an increase in metabolic rates (ca 20 %) and an increase in feeding rates (ca 15–20 %). Decreased pH increased the development time, but only at the low temperature. We conclude that warming will likely exert a greater effect on shrimp larval development than ocean acidification manifesting itself as accelerated developmental rates with greater maintenance costs and decreased recruitment in terms of number and size. 相似文献

The thecate dinoflagellate Scrippsiella trochoidea is a cosmopolitan, bloom-forming alga that has been generally considered non-toxic. Here, we report that environmentally
relevant cell densities (104 cells mL−1) of Scrippsiella trochoidea strains isolated from the Northwest Atlantic Ocean caused 100% mortality in Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae during 3-day exposures while parallel control larvae exhibited 100% survival. S. trochoidea also exhibited lethal effects on Northern quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria) larvae (70% mortality during 3-day exposure) but were non-toxic to juvenile fish (Cyprinodon variegates). The cultures of S. trochoidea were more lethal to Northern quahog larvae than ten other species of harmful algae, including the highly toxic species Cochlodinium polykrikoides. Scrippsiella trochoidea cultures within later stages of growth were more toxic than exponential growth stages to bivalve larvae, and the toxicity
was dose dependent. Furthermore, toxicity was maintained in the cultures that were sonicated, boiled, and frozen as well as
in resuspended residues of the culture but was significantly lower in cell-free culture media. Collectively, these results
suggest that S. trochoidea causes mortality in bivalve larvae through a physicochemical rather than strictly chemical mechanism, such as clogging of
larval feeding apparatuses by materials produced by S. trochoidea (e.g., lipids, extracellular polysaccharides, and/or cell debris) which accumulate as cells in culture or blooms age. This
is the first report of the lethal effects of Scrippsiella trochoidea on shellfish larvae. 相似文献

Deep-water shrimps, distributed on the steep outer reef slopes of tropical Pacific Islands, were obtained by setting baited traps in depths down to 850 m in the vicinity of Laucala Bay, Fiji, over the period 1979 to 1983. Life-history variables were estimated and interspecific comparisons made between Parapandalus serratifrons, Plesionika longirostris, Heterocarpus ensifer, H. gibbosus, H. sibogae, H. laevigatus (Pandalidae) and Saron marmoratus (Hippolytidae) which have different depth distributions. Results suggested that, interspecifically, reproductive lifespan tended to increase with increasing depth of distribution and that mean egg sizes of each species increased with increasing depth. Brood sizes tended to increase inconsistently with depth, although relative brood size (number of eggs per “standar” 15 g individual) appeared unrelated to depth. Although annual reproductive effort varied inconsistently with depth, reproductive effort totalled over the lifespan of the Heterocarpus species tended to increase with increasing depth. Some of the findings are counter to competition-based ecological theory, and it is proposed that adult predation decreases with increasing depth, allowing deeper-water species to have an extended lifespan, an increased degree of iteroparity, and a corresponding increase in lifetime reproductive effort. Further, we suggest that the probabilities of larval survival, which appear to decrease with increasing depth, are offset by the production of larger eggs by deeper-water species. 相似文献

Obtaining optimal growth of redtail shrimp at an economic production cost is essential. An experiment was conducted to evaluate simultaneous effects of daily ration and feeding frequency on growth of redtail shrimp at controlled temperatures. Two series were operated contemporarily, one at 25°C and the other at 30°C. the three daily rations were 5, 15, and 25% of fresh body weight in association with three levels of daily feeding frequency: one, three, and five times. Each series lasted for 80 days. The growth rate and the combined effects were studied on day 40 and day 80 for each series.Response surface analyses showed that, at 25°C, two quadratic polynomial equations could describe the daily growth rates (G1 and G2) during growth periods 1 (day 1-day 40) and 2 (day 41-day 80). The optimal daily ration and feeding frequency in terms of maximum growth rate were found at 25°C to be 22.38% of fresh body weight with three feedings/day for growth period 1 and 22.68% of fresh body weight with three feedings/day for growth period 2.At 30°C, two dynamic models were derived for each growth period that included growth optimums of 21.94% and four feedings/day for the first growth period, and 21.27% and four feedings/day for the subsequent growth period. 相似文献

Survival, developmental and consumption rate (Artemia nauplii ingested per day) as well as predation efficiency (ingested per available Artemia nauplii) were studied during the larval development of the shallow-water burrowing thalassinid Callianassa tyrrhena (Petagna, 1792), which exhibits an abbreviated type of development with only two zoeal stages and a megalopa. The larvae,
hatched from berried females from S. Euboikos Bay (Aegean Sea, Greece), were reared at 10 temperature–food density combinations
(19 and 24 °C; 0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Artemia nauplii d−1). Enhanced starvation resistance was evident: 92 and 58% of starved zoeas I molted to zoea II, while metamorphosis to megalopa
was achieved by 76 and 42% of the hatched zoeas at 19 and 24 °C, respectively. The duration of both zoeal stages was affected
by temperature, food density and their interaction. Nevertheless, starvation showed different effects at the two temperatures:
compared to the fed shrimp, the starved zoeae exhibited accelerated development at 19 °C (8.4 d) but delayed metamorphosis
at 24 °C (5.9 d). On the other hand, both zoeal stages were able to consume food at an increased rate as food density and
temperature increased. Predation efficiency also increased with temperature, but never exceeded 0.6. Facultative lecithotrophy,
more pronounced during the first zoeal stage of C.tyrrhena, can be regarded as an adaptation of a species whose larvae can respond physiologically to the different temperature–food
density combinations encountered in the wide geographical range of their natural habitat.

Levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and manganese were examined in the muscle, hepatopancreas, and gonad of
white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, females at different stages of ovary maturation. Eyestalk-ablated shrimp were sampled during the intermolt stage and classified
using the following maturation stages evaluated histologically: cortical stage, vitellogenesis, previtellogenesis, and without
gonadic development. In muscle, the copper concentration was significantly lower in the vitellogenic stage than in other stages
of ovary development. In the hepatopancreas, manganese levels were higher in the cortical and vitellogenic stages than in
animals in previtellogenesis and without gonadic development. No other influence of ovary maturation on muscle and hepatopancreas
mineral content was found. In contrast, in the ovary, significant differences of some mineral concentrations were detected.
Zinc, iron, and magnesium concentrations were significantly increased in the cortical stage compared to the vitellogenic and
previtellogenic stages. Our results indicate that these elements are selectively accumulated during ovary development, especially
when the ovaries reach the cortical stage.

The rocky subtidal community off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia has historically undergone a cyclical transition between
Laminaria-dominated kelp beds and sea urchin-dominated barrens. Since the introduction of the invasive alga Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides, a third community state has emerged: Codium-dominated algal beds. We conducted a 42-week feeding experiment in the laboratory, which mimicked the quantity and quality
of food available to urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) in each of these community states. Feeding rate, growth, reproduction, and survival of urchins fed either Laminaria longicruris or C. fragile ad libidum, or L. longicruris 2 days per month, were measured. Although the ad libidum feeding rate on C. fragile was higher than that on kelp, energy intake was lower. Urchins in the ad libidum kelp treatment were larger and had larger
gonads than those in the C. fragile treatment. Urchins fed kelp infrequently exhibited little somatic and gonadic growth over the course of the experiment. Regression
analysis revealed that urchin performance on these diets was strongly related to energy intake. Diet treatment had no effect
on survival or gonad maturation. Although urchins can consume substantial amounts of C. fragile, it appears that they cannot, or do not, feed quickly enough to compensate for its lower nutritional value. Our results suggest
that, although urchins feeding on C. fragile are capable of surviving, growing, and reproducing, the replacement of kelp by C. fragile in some areas might negatively affect urchin populations as they continue to repopulate the shallow subtidal zone. 相似文献

Sorption by humic acids is known to modify the bioavailability and toxicity of metals in soils and aquatic systems. The sorption of cadmium(II) and copper(II) to two soil humic acids was measured at pH 6.0 using ion-selective electrode potentiometric titration at different temperatures. Sorption reactions were studied with all components in aqueous solution, or with the humates in suspension. Adsorption reactions were described using a multiple site-binding model, and a model assuming a continuous log-normal distribution of adsorption constants. Adsorption of Cu2+ was more favourable than adsorption of Cd2+. The log-normal distribution model provided the closest fit to observations and allowed parameterisation of adsorption data using a mean adsorption constant (log K μ). Sorption of Cd2+ to dissolved humic acids increased slightly in extent and sorption affinity with increasing temperature, but the effect was small (log K μ 2.96–3.15). A slightly greater temperature effect occurred for sorption of Cd2+ to solid-phase humic acids (log K μ 1.30–2.08). Sorption of copper(II) to both aqueous- and colloidal-phase humates showed more pronounced temperature dependence, with extent of sorption, and sorption affinity, increasing with increasing temperature (log K μ 3.4–4.9 in solution and 1.4–4.5 in suspension). The weaker adsorption of Cd2+ than Cu2+, and smaller temperature effects for dissolved humates than suspended humates, suggested that the observed temperature effects had a kinetic, rather than thermodynamic, origin. For any metal-to-ligand ratio, free metal ion concentration, and by inference metal bioavailability, decreased with increasing temperature. The consistency of the data with kinetic rather than thermodynamic control of metal bioavailability suggests that equilibrium modelling approaches to estimating bioavailability may be insufficient. 相似文献

In coastal foredunes marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) is used to stabilize windblown sand. The development of traditionally plantedAmmophila into a more natural foredune vegetation may take 5–10 yr. For economic reasons, traditional planting may be replaced by alternative
techniques such as planting seeds or disk-harrowing rhizome fragments. In this paper, we compare the initial vegetation development
of traditionally planted stands with stands established from seeds and from rhizomes.
The experiments were conducted on an artificial foredune originating from dredged sea sand. The total experimental area covered
more than 100 ha and the vegetation development was studied for 6 yr. The data were analysed bya priori grouping of plant species according to their ecology, as well as by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Redundancy Analysis
(RA) of the percentage ground cover per plant species.
Comparing ecological groups of plants showed that all planting methods delivered equal numbers of plant species that are indicative
for coastal dunes. PCA and RA showed that methods based on the use of rhizome material resulted in a higher percentage cover
of clonal perennials (Calammophila baltica, Festuca rubra ssp.arenaria, Carex arenaria andCirsium arvense) than the traditionally planted stands and the stands obtained from seeds. The latter two were characterized by the dominance
of annuals, bi-annuals and (mostly nonrhizomatous) perennials.
Initially, the rates of succession were highest in the stands obtained from rhizomes. However, after 3–6 yr there were no
differences between the various stands. During the first four years, the percentage cover by rhizomatous foredune plants developed
faster than that of annuals, bi-annuals and perennials. After 6 yr, the latter contributed almost as much to the percentage

对2002年福建省引起食物中毒的织纹螺毒素进行研究。高效液相色谱-质谱联用(liquid chromatography/mass,LC/MS)的分析结果显示,织纹螺毒素的主要成分是河豚毒素类毒素(tetrodotoxin,TTX),另外还含有4-epiTTX、anhydroTTX、deoxyTTX等成分。生物法对织纹螺毒素的毒力测定结果表明:所收集的26个织纹螺样品中15个检测出毒性,毒素的毒力在5.7~47.3MU·g-1之间。毒力最高的织纹螺样品2003年5月1日来自福安,主要由半褶织纹螺和另一未定种组成。 相似文献

Populations of the sponge Dysidea (Lamellodysidea) herbacea, which host the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria spongeliae, vary in their production of polychlorinated peptides. Peptide natural products previously isolated from D. herbacea are often halogenated and include dysidin, dysidinin, and a series of chlorinated diketopiperazines. Strikingly, the distinctive leucine-derived trichloromethyl signature of these compounds is shared only with metabolites of the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula, and includes such compounds as barbamide and nordysidinin. Genetic information available for the barbamide biosynthetic gene cluster was used to successfully polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplify a barB1 homolog (dysB1) from D. herbacea samples collected in Papua New Guinea. Catalyzed reporter deposition fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) analysis showed that dysB1 oligonucleotide probes hybridized to sequences in the filamentous cyanobacterial symbiont O. spongeliae. Consistent with this finding, a D. herbacea/O. spongeliae collection devoid of the polychlorinated peptides did not contain the barB1 homologs.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin 相似文献

我们依据经济合作与发展组织的210指导性文件,利用鲤鱼受精卵,进行环丙沙星(CIP)的毒性试验。测试浓度设置为1、100、500、1 000和3 000 μg?LL-1。我们发现在所有测试组中,暴露于CIP会加速孵化,但在暴露于最高浓度CIP(3000 μg?LL-1)的测试组,出现了显著的生长下降的现象。在实验的第6天(孵化之后),可以观察到大量增加的肉眼可见的形态异常现象。最高数量肉眼可见的形态异常现象是在自由胚胎和幼虫CIP暴露浓度为100、500、1 000和3 000 μg?LL-1的测试组中产生的(测试样本的20%~23%)。在所有CIP暴露试验组中,均检测出GST活性的呈逐步降低趋势,但是在CIP浓度为500和3 000 μg?LL-1的测试组中出现了显著差异(p < 0.01)。其中在大多数测试浓度下,谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶和过氧化氢酶的活性增加(p < 0.01,p < 0.05),而在CIP暴露浓度为500和3 000 μg?LL-1的测试组,谷胱甘肽还原酶出现活性降低的现象(p < 0.05)。在所有的CIP暴露组中,硫代巴比妥酸活性物质的浓度明显降低(p < 0.01)。可测的CIP最低有效浓度(LOEC)是1 μg?LL-1。\这些结果表明,孵化过程,早期的个体发育,形态异常的产生,以及鱼类体内的抗氧化和生物转化酶活性和脂质过氧化反应,都会受到CIP影响。

ABSTRACTKnowledge about phytoplankton communities is important for aquaculture due to their influence on environmental variables. The goal of the study was to evaluate the ecological effect of seaweed Gracilaria birdiae at three different densities: 2.5 (LG2.5); 5.0 (LG5.0) and 7.5?kg m?3 (LG7.5), on water quality variables and the phytoplankton communities in integrated aquaculture systems (shrimp and seaweed) with a control (without seaweed) (LB) using biofloc technology. Settleable and total suspended solids were significantly correlated with the phytoplankton groups. In addition, orthophosphate was the main variable controlling phytoplankton growth and gross primary production. No significant differences were identified among the treatments in terms of the phytoplankton assemblages (p?>?0.05) but differences were found between the communities (ANOSIM, R global?=?0.873) in relation to the days of the experiment. However, the LG2.5 treatment had higher diversity and lower species dominance, as well as higher productivity and final shrimp weight. The results indicate that seaweed inhibit phytoplankton growth, mainly of toxic species. They suggest that phytoplankton composition in integrated aquaculture systems in the presence of seaweed at a density of 2.5?kg m?3 is more diversified and provides better water quality and shrimp performance by inhibiting the abundance of harmful species. 相似文献

Juvenile red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, aggregate under adult conspecifics, whereas sympatric juvenile green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, are typically more solitary and dispersed. Neither the potential advantage of juvenile sheltering nor the differences in
post-settlement behavior between the two species has been demonstrated experimentally, but may be related to protection from
predators and/or hydrodynamics. In predation experiments, juvenile vulnerability differed in the two species as the seastar
Pycnopodia helianthoides consistently chose juvenile S. franciscanus over S. droebachiensis (100% vs. 0%). When associated with adults, juvenile mortality decreased dramatically in S. franciscanus (90% alone vs. 5% with adults), but very little in S. droebachiensis (85% vs. 75%). Not surprisingly, juvenile behavioral responses in the two species reflect this difference in vulnerability.
Juvenile S. franciscanus sheltered under adults when predation risk was high, but not when risk was low (44% vs. 13%), whereas sheltering in S. droebachiensis was infrequent and not related to predation risk (7% for high risk versus 5% for low risk). From a hydrodynamic perspective,
the presence of an adult led to the creation of a hydrodynamic refuge for juveniles, where average water velocities were reduced
by > 60% around the adult urchin. Again, striking differences in sheltering rate were apparent in S. franciscanus (52% vs. 13% for high flow and low flow, respectively), but not S. droebachiensis (5% for high flow versus 4% for low flow). Sheltering behavior was also species-specific as juveniles did not shelter at
high rates under adults of the opposite species (≤ 16%). A field survey confirmed these finding in that juvenile S. franciscanus abundance was associated with both adults and water motion (R
2 = 0.80, P = 0.008, best-subsets regression). These results suggest that sheltering confers juvenile S. franciscanus with a degree of protection from predators and water motion, and that species-specific differences in this post-settlement
behavior may be related to the differences in the protection afforded by adults. 相似文献

Low pO2 values have been measured in the perivitelline fluids (PVF) of marine animal eggs on several occasions, especially towards
the end of development, when embryonic oxygen consumption is at its peak and the egg case acts as a massive barrier to diffusion.
Several authors have therefore suggested that oxygen availability is the key factor leading to hatching. However, there have
been no measurements of PVF pCO2 so far. This is surprising, as elevated pCO2 could also constitute a major abiotic stressor for the developing embryo. As a first attempt to fill this gap in knowledge,
we measured pO2, pCO2 and pH in the PVF of late cephalopod (Sepia officinalis) eggs. We found linear relationships between embryo wet mass and pO2, pCO2 and pH. pO2 declined from >12 kPa to less than 5 kPa, while pCO2 increased from 0.13 to 0.41 kPa. In the absence of active accumulation of bicarbonate in the PVF, pH decreased from 7.7 to
7.2. Our study supports the idea that oxygen becomes limiting in cephalopod eggs towards the end of development; however,
pCO2 and pH shift to levels that have caused significant physiological disturbances in other marine ectothermic animals. Future
research needs to address the physiological adaptations that enable the embryo to cope with the adverse abiotic conditions
in their egg environment.

The material examined consisted of adult specimens (male and female) of the shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) collected during the summer of 1967 from the Gdask Bay of the Baltic Sea. Column and thin-layer chromatography was used for the separation of the carotenoids. The ester compounds and protein complexes of carotenoids were hydrolized with 15% KOH in methanol at room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere for 48 h. The absorption maxima of the various fractions and spots were determined on the spectrophotometer Specol after eluation. The identification of the carotenoids was based mainly on the absorption maxima in appropriate organic solvents and on the Rt values. The acetone extract from the Crangon crangon specimens gave a light blue fluorescence and absorption maxima at wavelengths of 447, 463, 595 to 596 and 667 m. The following carotenoids were found to be present in the adult specimens of Crangon crangon: -carotene, cantaxanthin, astaxanthin, free and esterified lutein, zeaxanthin, and a form of xanthophyll which was not precisely identified. In addition to the above, biliary dyes were also found, probably of the mesobiliviolin and mesobilirhodin type. 相似文献
