East Pacific swimming crabs are poorly known ecologically. We trawled samples along 4 estuarine-continental shelf transects to provide information on the population structure and species composition of portunids along environmental stress gradients. Portunids comprised almost 99% of the benthic crabs. Callinectes toxotes dominates the freshest estuarine areas, but is replaced by C. arcuatus in estuary mouth and shallow-shelf samples. Deeper shelf samples are dominated by Euphylax robustus and Portunus sper. Great numbers of E. dovii, a pelagic species, were taken on the shelf; their size distribution implies intraspecific competition. Evidence is given that differences in salinity tolerance account for differential landward limits, but competition, predation by fishes, increased fouling and decreased available food exclude eurytopic species from physicochemically equable shelf waters.  相似文献

Spawning female blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, use ebb-tide transport (ETT) to migrate seaward. In estuaries with semi-diurnal tides, ETT in ovigerous blue crabs is driven by a circatidal rhythm in vertical swimming in which crabs ascend into the water column during ebb tide. The ontogeny of this rhythm was examined by monitoring swimming behavior of females before the pubertal molt, females that had recently undergone the molt but had not yet produced a clutch of eggs, and ovigerous females from an estuary with strong semi-diurnal tides. To assess variation in swimming rhythms with ambient tidal regime, swimming rhythms of ovigerous females from semi-diurnal (Beaufort, North Carolina), diurnal (St. Andrew Bay, Florida), and non-tidal (South River, North Carolina) estuaries were compared. Experiments were conducted during the summers of 2006–2008. Female crabs prior to oviposition had variable endogenous swimming rhythms (circadian, circatidal, or circalunidian). Ovigerous females from estuaries with semi-diurnal and diurnal tides had pronounced circatidal or circalunidian rhythms with swimming during the time of ambient ebb tide. Swimming rhythms of several ovigerous crabs switched between circatidal and circalunidian during the ~5-day observation period. Ovigerous crabs from a non-tidal estuary had a circadian rhythm with vertical swimming around the time of sunset. These results suggest that, while endogenous swimming rhythms are present in some female blue crabs prior to oviposition, rapid seaward movement via ETT in tidal estuaries begins following oviposition of the first clutch of eggs.  相似文献

Horseshoe crabs act as moving substrata for simple to complex communities of small marine organisms. Amplexed adult pairs migrate for breeding once every 2 weeks from deep waters towards nearshore waters during highest high tide. Female horseshoe crabs bury themselves to the level of the lateral eyes to deposit eggs while the male crabs fertilize them. Subsequently eggs are buried by the female. Tachypleus gigas (Müller) is the most abundant horseshoe crab species above available along the Orissa coast (India). Adults reach terminal anecdysis once sexually mature and live with their carapace for 4 to 9 years. In spite of this, epibiosis is limited. In the current investigation, differences in the epibiotic community (diatoms and macro-epibionts) present on horseshoe crabs, according to gender, were evaluated, and the macro-epibiont population from different regions of the carapace was mapped. In general, female horseshoe crabs harbored fewer epibionts than the males. Among the diatoms, Navicula spp., Nitzschia spp. and Skeletonema sp. were dominant in both sexes. However, the abundance and diversity of diatoms was greater on the carapaces of male crabs. Among the macro-epibionts, the acorn barnacle (Balanus amphitrite Darwin) and encrusting bryozoan (Membranipora sp.) were the most dominant forms. Barnacles and bryozoans were greater in abundance in the “rough” zone (cardiopthalmic region and anterior region of the opisthosoma). Mapping of the macro-epibionts from different regions of the carapace revealed differential distribution in males and females. Such differentiated distribution of the macro-epibionts can be related to factors such as changing habitat by the horseshoe crabs during breeding, mechanical abrasion and surface availability during mating and nesting periods, requirements of epizootic larvae and surface properties of the carapace (wettability and roughness). In the case of females, mechanical abrasion and surface availability played an important role in the epibiotic community structure and distribution patterns. The surface wettability measurements indicated male carapace to be slightly more hydrophobic than the female carapace. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the male carapace was comparatively rough compared to the smooth carapace of females. A comparison of surface properties of the carapace indicated that the male carapace is more conducive for epibiosis. Received: 23 August 1999 / Accepted: 25 January 2000  相似文献

Molting and breeding entail major energetic costs for female crustaceans. However, females of some hermit crabs perform a molt immediately prior to copulation (prenuptial molt). The evolutionary significance of the prenuptial molt was examined in Pagurus hermit crabs, and two hypotheses were tested: (1) prenuptial molt might enhance the success of the present clutch by cleaning the pleopods of females and thereby preventing eggs from being dislodged from the pleopods, and (2) prenuptial molt might function for growth and increase future fecundity at the cost of energetic expenditure on the present brood. Although these hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, our results rejected the former hypothesis and supported the latter hypothesis. All four Pagurus species examined showed significant negative relationships between prenuptial molting and continuity of breeding; i.e., they showed high molting frequency after they had a long rest period from breeding. Females of P. minutus increased their size through the prenuptial molt, and showed a decreased clutch size due to the molt. The number of dislodged eggs increased if females molted in P. minutus. These results suggest that hermit crabs undergoing a prenuptial molt might not gain any clear immediate advantage of enhanced survival of eggs in the present clutch, and that the prenuptial molt would mainly contribute to growth.  相似文献

Larvae of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus and fiddler crab Uca pugilator are exported from estuaries and develop on the continental shelf. Previous studies have shown that the zoea-1 larvae of some crab species use selective tidal-stream transport (STST) to migrate from estuaries to coastal areas. The STST behavior of newly hatched larvae is characterized by upward vertical migration during ebb tide followed by a descent toward the bottom during flood. The objectives of the study were (1) to determine if newly hatched zoeae of U. pugilator and C. sapidus possess endogenous tidal rhythms in vertical migration that could underlie STST, (2) to determine if the rhythms persist in the absence of estuarine chemical cues, and (3) to characterize the photoresponses of zoeae to assess the impact of light on swimming behavior and vertical distribution. Ovigerous crabs with late-stage embryos were collected from June to August 2002 and maintained under constant laboratory conditions. Following hatching, swimming activity of zoeae was monitored in darkness for 72 h. U. pugilator zoeae displayed a circatidal rhythm in swimming with peaks in activity occurring near the expected times of ebb currents in the field. Conversely, C. sapidus zoeae exhibited no clear rhythmic migration patterns. When placed in a light field that simulated the underwater angular light distribution, C. sapidus larvae displayed a weak positive phototaxis at the highest light levels tested, while U. pugilator zoeae were unresponsive. Swimming behaviors and photoresponses of both species were not significantly influenced by the presence of chemical cues associated with offshore or estuarine water. These results are consistent with predictions based on species-specific differences in spawning and the proximity of hatching areas to the mouths of estuaries. U. pugilator larvae are released within estuaries near the adult habitat. Thus, ebb-phased STST behavior by zoeae is adaptive since it enhances export. Selective pressures for a tidal migration in C. sapidus larvae are likely weaker than for U. pugilator since ovigerous females migrate seaward prior to spawning and hatching occurs near inlets and in coastal waters.  相似文献

Littoral hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, show a strong preference for Littorina obtusata shells rather than those of Gibbula species. The fitness consequences, in terms of fecundity, for this shell preference is examined for female crabs. Females in the preferred species produced eggs earlier in the season, produced more eggs in the first brood, and produced a second brood more often than did females in the less preferred species. The smaller brood for Gibbula spp. was not a consequence of egg loss from the pleopods due to an unfavourable shape of shell, but rather reflected lower egg production. It is not clear, however, if this differential reproduction is due to direct costs of carrying an unfavourable shell, i.e. the shell impedes reproduction, or whether crabs compete aggressively for favoured shells so that only crabs of low quality inhabit lowquality shells.  相似文献

The distribution of total dry weight of zooplankton, copepod numbers and ichthyoplankton across the outer continental shelf in the central Great Barrier Reef was examined at bi-weekly intervals for three months over summer of 1983. Copepods were sampled (236 m net) within 10 m of the surface and within 10 m of the bottom. Mean densities in surface waters decreased markedly from the mid-shelf to outer shelf and the Coral Sea, but no cross-shelf gradient occurred in the bottom-water. Densities of copepods on the mid-shelf (surface and bottom waters) and in bottom-waters of the outer shelf were typically ca. 400 m–3. Significantly lower densities (ca. 100 m–3) occurred in surface waters of the outer shelf, except during outbursts of Acartia australis, when densities in these waters differed little from those elsewhere on the shelf. In oceanic waters, 10 km from the outer shelf station, copepod densities in surface waters were ca. 40 m–3. Four of the five most abundant copepod taxa in surface waters, Paracalanus spp., Eucalanus crassus, Acrocalanus gracilis and Canthocalanus pauper, tended to be most abundant at the mid-shelf end of the transect. Acartia australis was sporadically very abundant in surface waters of the outer shelf, as was Paracalanus spp. in bottom-water of the outer shelf. An assemblage of Coral Sea species of copepod occurred in bottom-water of the outer shelf during two major intrusions, but not at other times. Densities of all common species varied considerably between cruises. Maximum densities of all common species except A. australis tended to be associated with diatom blooms linked to intrusions but a bloom did not necessarily mean all common species were abundant. Fish larvae included both reef and non-reef taxa, with reef taxa predominating on the outer shelf (approx 2:1 in density of individuals) and non-reef taxa dominating in nearshore samples (approx 2:1). Nine of the ten most abundant taxa analysed showed highly significant variation in numbers among stations and all but one of these also exhibited significant station x cruise interactions. Interactions generally reflected changes in the rank importance of adjacent stations from one cruise to the next or lack of any significant cross-shelf variation on some cruises where overall abundance of the taxa was low.  相似文献

The portunid crabScylla serrata (Forskål) is shown to migrate offshore to spawn. Records of 447S. serrata caught as bycatch by trawlers in the tropical waters of northern Australia were analysed with respect to area, depth, distance offshore and month of capture as well as the sex and size of the crabs and whether the females were ovigerous. The crabs were caught mainly in three areas that correspond to the tiger prawn trawl fishery, at between 10 and 60 m depth (mean 28.5 m), 3 to 95 km offshore (mean 17.9 km). Most (87%) of the crabs were captured in October and November, which suggests they move offshore in September and October. No crabs were reported from offshore by February. Over 97% of the crabs caught offshore were female, of these 61.5% were ovigerous. The size range of females (100–109 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) and males (120–129 to 200–209 mm carapace-width size classes) caught was similar. The frequent occurrence in coastal waters of females that are larger than the modal size at spawning, as well as mature females with spent ovaries, suggests that many females return to the coast after spawning. Although some species of portunid crab are euryhaline, mature females of estuarine species migrate to the sea to spawn. The migration byS. serrata described here is far more extensive than would be required to reach sea water salinities; it probably provides a dispersal mechanism for larvae to enable the megalopa stage to recruit to habitats distant from those of the parents.  相似文献

The behaviour of 16 adult (8 male and 8 female) spanner crabs (Ranina ranina), collected off southern Queensland, Australia, was monitored continuously in captivity by closed-circuit television for fifteen months from September 1982. Spanner crabs spent most of the time buried in the substrate, emerging mainly only when food became available. They remained emerged for twice as long on feeding days as on days without food. Females responded significantly faster than males to the presence of food. Response was slowest in October and November. There was no correlation between temperature and response time. The average feeding time was 2.0 min (SE=0.12), with no significant difference between males and females. Crabs without food were aggressive towards crabs with food, which sometimes led to fighting and wounding. These interactions also could result in food being transferred from one individual to another. When males interacted, food was transferred more often than when either females, or males and females interacted. Around moulting, male crabs did not feed for 52 d (SE=9.0) and females for 22 d (SE=2.2). This habit would reduce the frequency with which newly moulted crabs are caught in the baited tangle nets used by commercial fishermen. In mating interactions, copulation was always initiated by the males. Males dug up other crabs but, apparently unable to distinguish the sex of these individuals, attempted copulation with either sex. The majority of copulations occurred between midday and midnight and in the period August to December. The frequency of copulations with a female increased 10 d before she extruded eggs, after which it dropped to zero for the following 41 to 50 d. Eggs were carried for 39 to 44 d in the period September to November. The females remained emerged for long periods before extruding their eggs, but the period shortened immediately afterwards. This behaviour would lead to low catchability of ovigerous females. Because females respond more rapidly than males to a food stimulus, they may be more catchable in baited nets than are males. It is concluded that seasonal changes in the behaviour of spanner crabs could affect the number caught by baited tangle nets and may influence the sex ratio in catches.  相似文献

Summary. Previous studies indicated the presence of antennally-active compounds in extracts of eggs laid by female cabbage root flies, Delia radicum, that stimulated oviposition by conspecific females. We confirmed that previously laid D. radicum eggs stimulated oviposition by other D. radicum females, in a dose-dependent manner. Methanol extracts of conspecific eggs stimulated oviposition by females D. radicum, whereas egg extracts of D. antiqua and Psila rosae had no effect. Electrophysiological recordings from the tarsal sensilla of D. radicum females indicated that neurones of the C5 sensillum responded to the egg extracts from both D. radicum and D. antiqua, but not P. rosae. Chemical analysis revealed that the extract of eggs from D. radicum contained the thia-triaza-fluorene compound, 1,2-dihydro-3-thia-4,10,10b-triaza-cyclopenta[.a.]fluorene-1-carboxylic acid (CIF-1), an oviposition stimulant found previously only in cruciferous plants. Another potentially active component has yet to be identified.  相似文献

Tagging experiments were carried out on Scylla serrata in three different types of habitat in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, during 1976–1981. A total of 6 233 crabs were tagged and 1 180 recaptured. Two categories of movement were found, a free ranging type and an offshore migration by females. Crabs in a narrow creek with mangrove-covered banks displayed little movement. In areas with large intertidal flats bare of mangroves, crabs underwent more movement and adults (carapace width 150 mm or greater) and subadults (carapace width 100 to 149 mm) moved similar distances (mean 3.9 km). In an area with direct access to the sea, males and females moved equal distances, but in a long channel behind an island, mean female movement (6.6 km) was significantly more than that of males (mean 3.7 km). The distance between tag and recapture site was not greatly affected by the time at liberty over a period of 1 to 36 wk. Tag recaptures showed an exchange between the populations of a mangrove creek and those in the neighbouring bay. There was very limited exchange between the population in an estuary and the adjacent bay and no exchange was found between neighbouring areas separated by a region of habitat unsuitable for S. serrata. None of the more than 3 000 females captured in the study area was carrying eggs, but two tagged ovigerous females were caught at sea after having moved out of the study area. Eight other females were recaptured in other inshore or estuarine areas 20 to 65 km from their release site.  相似文献

Various aspects of the biology of the blue manna crab Portunus pelagicus have been investigated in the large Peel-Harvey estuarine system of Western Australia, using samples collected regularly by beach seine, gill net and otter trawl between February 1980 and July 1981. Whereas crabs were widely dispersed throughout Peel Inlet, Harvey Estuary and the saline regions of tributary rivers during the summer and autumn, they were found mainly near the estuary mouth in the winter and spring. Since our data suggest that P. pelagicus has a preference for salinities of 30 to 40, the above changes in distribution are apparently related to the marked seasonal variation in salinity which results from the very seasonal pattern of rainfall. The number of ovigerous crabs in the estuary were greatest in January and February. The mean carapace width and number of eggs of ovigerous females were 110 mm (range 85 to 157 mm) and 509 433 (range 270 183 to 847 980), respectively. P. pelagicus started to reach the minimum legal size for capture (carapace width 127 mm) in the summer when they were approximately I yr old, and left the system in large numbers in the following winter when they were 15 to 20 mo old. These features explain why the fishery for P. pelagicus is highly seasonal, with the vast majority of crabs being taken between January and May. As crabs approached the end of their first year of life, the ratio of females began to exceed that of males, apparently as a result of the movement of males out of the system and legislation against the capture of ovigerous females.  相似文献

Surface “swarms” of the swimming crabs Charybdis smithii are still considered as an unusual phenomenon in the open Indian Ocean, although their dense pelagic aggregations were already reported in waters off the Indian coast and in the northern Arabian Sea. Based on an extensive large-scale data series taken over 45 years, we demonstrate that C. smithii is common in the pelagic provinces of the western Indian Ocean driven by the wind monsoon regime. Swimming crabs are dispersed by the monsoon currents throughout the equatorial Indian Ocean. They aggregate at night in the upper 150-m layer, where their estimated biomass derived from pelagic trawling data can exceed 130 kg km−2. Abundance of C. smithii can reach >15,000 ind. km−2 in July (i.e. the peak of the south-west monsoon), declines by 50-fold in March and is negligible in May. C. smithii is an important prey for more than 30 species of abundant epipelagic top predators. In turn, it feeds on mesopelagic species. This swimming crab is a major species of the intermediate trophic levels and represents a crucial seasonal trophic link in the open ocean ecosystem of the western Indian Ocean. Outbursts in pelagic waters of huge biomasses of ordinarily benthic crustaceans (C. smithii and Natosquilla investigatoris) are a remarkable feature of the Indian Ocean, although similar, but smaller, events are reported in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Few investigations have examined the occurrence of zooplankton resting eggs in the sea bed of waters deeper than 20 m. In this study the distribution and abundance of planktonic copepods and their benthic resting eggs in coastal waters off northern California, U.S.A., were determined and related to environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, depth, and sediment grain size). Sediment cores, net tows, and CTD profiles were obtained in April and October 1989, and February, April, and October 1990. Water depths in the study area ranged from approximately 60 to 120 m. The mean abundance of eggs was as high as 1.2×105 m-2 for Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and 1.9×105 m-2 for Tortanus discaudatus Thompson and Scott. These egg concentrations are comparable to those reported previously for shallower more protected regions. The abundance of eggs in the sediments decreased with increasing depth of the water column. For the region as a whole, eggs were least abundant in muddy sediments. The mean abundance of eggs in the sea bed also varied seasonally and annully. Benthic resting eggs of A. clausi were more abundant in April 1989 than in April 1990, and adults of the species were never found in the plankton samples. The lack of adults is not unusual since results of previous studies indicate that A. clausi is a cold-water species, and in this region water temperatures are colder in summer, than in winter, due to upwelling. Temperature and salinity data indicated that the upwelling season had commenced by the time of the April 1990, but not the April 1989 sampling. Thus, the reduced abundance of benthic eggs in April 1990 may have been due to egg-hatching in response to reduced temperatures. The results suggest that the presence of A. clausi in coastal waters off northern California is linked to recruitment from benthic resting eggs.  相似文献

Female sand crabs (Emerita analoga) were sampled from 12 beaches along a 350 km stretch of Southern California coastline during the reproductive season in July, 1982. The percentage of mature females with egg masses and the condition of those egg masses were examined at each site. The proportion of mature females with egg masses varied only slightly between beaches. However, at sites within about 20 km of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, a high percentage of females carried egg masses consisting of empty egg shells. A transplant experiment was conducted. Females with empty egg masses were taken from the 6.5 km N study site, where only 5% of the mature females carried normal egg masses, and transferred to running unfiltered seawater in Santa Barbara. After 2 wk, about a third of the transplanted females carried normal egg masses, while at the same time the proportion of mature females with normal egg masses remained at 5% on the beach of origin. Heated water discharged from the nuclear generating station is probably not the cause of the abnormal reproduction of sand crabs along the nearby coast. More likely causes are: (1) runoff of agricultural pesticides from a creek 3 km north of the nuclear generating plant; (2) release of metals from corroding cooling pipes, and/or (3) increased turbidity of the nearshore waters.  相似文献

Intermoult Porcellana platycheles (Pennant) are slow moving, crawling crabs, incapable of swimming upwards from the substrate. Newly moulted porcelain crabs, however, are capable of effective upward swimming. An increased efficiency of tail-fan propulsion in newly moulted crabs was thought unlikely, and it was suspected that newly moulted P. platycheles were more buoyant than intermoult crabs. Results are presented to show that this is the case, and calculations were performed which indicate that fluid uptake at moult is insufficient to produce the observed increase in buoyancy. It is concluded that loss of heavy minerals and scleroprotein at moult cause the increased buoyancy. The adaptive significance of the enhanced swimming ability in newly moulted crabs is thought to lie in an improved ability to escape predation by intertidal fish and crabs.  相似文献

Laboratory studies and field collections show that egg production by Centropages typicus (Krøyer) in New York shelf waters in autumn 1984 responded to both food and temperature. Rates of egg production were high (43 to 76 eggs female-1 d-1) in October, early in the fall diatom bloom. Later, although food concentrations remained high and female size actually increased, egg production declined, presumably in response to seasonally decreasing temperatures. Carnivorous diets did not support egg production. Development time for autumn-hatched C. typicus was 33 d at 15°C, a rate that gives a Q10 of 2.21 when compared with the spring development rate of 49 d at 10°C. We could find no evidence of physiological adjustments being made by this copepod for overwintering. Development was not arrested at any subadult stage and resting eggs were not produced. Trends in body size of copepodid stage V, however, suggest that an overwintering strategy may be invoked by this copepod in Junuary or February.  相似文献

The hatching of the eggs of 3 Acartia species (A. tonsa, A. clausi, and Acartia sp. I) spawned in the laboratory and the eggs of Acartia (species undetermined) isolated from natural bottom sediments was examined under various environmental conditions (temperature, salinity and temperature combinations, oxygen concentration, illumination, and the presence of bottom mud). The range of temperature and salinity in which eggs hatched differed from one species to another. Egg hatching was inhibited under certain environmental conditions for all species, although egg viability under such conditions varied from one species to another. In relation to these findings, habitat separation of planktonic Acartia populations and the role of dormant eggs during their seasonal absence in the plankton of Southern California coastal waters are discussed.  相似文献

Carotenoid pigments were used as markers to investigate the sources of energy to two deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities. Specimens of the hydrothermal-vent brachyuran crabBythograea thermydron were collected at 2 500 m depth from the Rose Garden vent site in the Galápagos Rift Valley in February, November and December 1979, and 2 600 m depth on the East Pacific Rise at 21°N in May 1982. Four carotenoids (astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, echinenone and beta-carotene) have been identified as the pigments responsible for the red color of the eggs of the crabs from the Galápagos Rift site. Consistent with the fact that animals are unable to synthesize carotenoidsde novo, precursors were not present in the crabs' tissues, affirming that these pigments are of dietary origin. The number of ovigerous female crabs and the concentrations of carotenoids in the eggs suggest a readily available source of these pigments in the Galápagos vent environment. In contrast, the developing eggs ofB. thermydron from the 21°N vent site were cream-colored, with only trace quantites of carotenoids and fewer types of carotenoids. Analysis of carotenoid distribution in both females and males in these two populations indicates a very low level of carotenoids in the diet of the 21°N vent crabs, and reflects differences in trophic interactions and primary production at the two vent sites. The few types and low concentration of carotenoids inB. thermydron indicate a diet that is different from non-vent, deep-sea crustaceans. We hypothesize that the source of carotenoids are bacteria within the vent community, and not ultimately from photosynthetic production.  相似文献

Deep-sea red crabs Chaceon quinquedens (Smith) were collected in traps at depths of 860 and 1043 m in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Ovigerous crabs were maintained in the laboratory and the developing embryos were sampled every 2 wk until hatching. Proximate analysis (lipid, protein, carbohydrate, and ash) of embryos was performed to determine patterns and rates of organic reserve utilization during embryogenesis. Midgut gland, gonads, and clutch (as appropriate) of adult crabs (males, non-ovigerous females and ovigerous females) were analyzed for the same components as the embryos. Red crab embryos exhibited different patterns of yolk deposition and subsequent depletion of yolk components during embryogenesis. There was a range of lipid to protein (L:P) ratios among the different clutches examined, indicating plasticity in the relative proportions of lipid and protein yolk. The energy used for embryogenesis was estimated by converting the amounts of lipid, protein and carbohydrate in the embryos to their caloric equivalents; final values, taken from 9 mo-old embryos whose siblings were hatching as zoeae, were subtracted from the initial values of sibling embryos sampled at the time of collection (2 to 3 mo old). The amount of energy consumed during embryogenesis in the laboratory was relatively constant (0.12 to 0.13 cal egg-1). There was considerable variability among the concentrations of organic reserves in the midgut gland of adult crabs and in the ovaries of females. Variations in midgut gland L:P ratios and ovaries were related to the reproductive status of the females, but there were no trends related to depth of capture.  相似文献
