The city of Mumbai, India with a population of 15 million discharges about 2225 MLD of domestic wastewater after partial treatment to adjoining marine water body. Under the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project Scheme, sewage is being disposed to the west coast at Worli and Bandra through 3.4 kms long submarine outfalls. A field study was conducted at recently commissioned outfall diffuser location at Worli, at the onset of neap flood tide to study the dispersion patterns and measure the far field dilutions using radio and dye tracers. Estimated dilutions using different tracers were compared with outputs from an empirical model (Brooks) and a 2D numerical model (DIVAST). Validation using parameters such as BOD and FC, indicated a good match for BOD in near field compared to FC. The radiotracer 82Br and Rhodamine WT generally gave good correlation with Brooks' and DIVAST models for nearfield, however at further distances predictions were not accurate.  相似文献

The potential ecotoxicity of fluorescent dyes used in tracing, and their possible effects on human health, were evaluated by reviewing available toxicological information for 12 dyes — fluorescein, Lissamine Flavine FF, Rhodamine WT, Rhodamine B, Sulpho Rhodamine G, Sulpho Rhodamine B, eosin, pyranine, Phorwite BBH Pure, Tinopal 5BM GX, Tinopal CBS-X, and Diphenyl Brilliant Flavine 7GFF — and a dye-intermediate, amino G acid. This evaluation used available toxicological information, test data on analogous substances, and mathematical expressions for biological activity. Based on set criteria for human health and acute ecotoxicity, the evaluation indicated that these tracers have low to moderate levels of concern. The use of these tracers for the study of groundwater flow is appropriate if consideration is given to the overall human health and environmental effects. Their use in the environment requires tracer concentrations not exceeding 1–2 mg 1–1 persisting for a period in excess of 24 h in the groundwater at the point of groundwater withdrawal or discharge. A simple calculated potential dose was used in a comparison of the estimated acute toxicity of Rhodamine WT in rats to the known acute oral toxic dose in humans for several known acutely toxic chemicals. This comparison showed that none of the fluorescent dyes evaluated would present an acutely toxic threat at or substantially above the recommended 2 mg 1–1 concentration.The U.S. Governments right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged. A common technique for ground water tracing uses continuous or discrete analysis of fluorescent tracer dyes to produce tracer breakthrough curves which can be analysed to determine ground water trajectory, velocity and dispersivity. Some fluorescent dyes are excellent tracers, but there remain significant constraints in fluorometry with respect to installation, control and data acquisition using standard filter fluorometers as well as with general analytical protocols. This paper identifies some of the constraints associated with the widely used Turner Designs Model 10 Series filter fluorometer and technical and operational solutions which can significantly improve the precision, accuracy and time resolution of tracer data.  相似文献

Air exchange rates and interzonal flows are critical ventilation parameters that affect thermal comfort, air migration, and contaminant exposure in buildings and other environments. This paper presents the development of an updated approach to measure these parameters using perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) gases, the constant injection rate method, and adsorbent-based sampling of PFT concentrations. The design of miniature PFT sources using hexafluorotoluene and octafluorobenzene tracers, and the development and validation of an analytical GC/MS method for these tracers are described. We show that simultaneous deployment of sources and passive samplers, which is logistically advantageous, will not cause significant errors over multiday measurement periods in building, or over shorter periods in rapidly ventilated spaces like vehicle cabins. Measurement of the tracers over periods of hours to a week may be accomplished using active or passive samplers, and low method detection limits (<0.025 microg m(-3)) and high precisions (<10%) are easily achieved. The method obtains the effective air exchange rate (AER), which is relevant to characterizing long-term exposures, especially when ventilation rates are time-varying. In addition to measuring the PFT tracers, concentrations of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are simultaneously determined. Pilot tests in three environments (residence, garage, and vehicle cabin) demonstrate the utility of the method. The 4 day effective AER in the house was 0.20 h(-1), the 4 day AER in the attached garage was 0.80 h(-1), and 16% of the ventilation in the house migrated from the garage. The 5 h AER in a vehicle traveling at 100 km h(-1) under a low-to-medium vent condition was 92 h(-1), and this represents the highest speed test found in the literature. The method is attractive in that it simultaneously determines AERs, interzonal flows, and VOC concentrations over long and representative test periods. These measurements are practical, cost-effective, and helpful in indoor air quality and other investigations.  相似文献

Rhodamine WT (RWT) is an adsorptive flourescent dye tracer that is used in hydrological and hydrogeological studies. Municipal biosolids (sewage) are rich in organic matter and have a variety of chemical constituents that can interact to confound optical sensing of RWT florescence in water (e.g., quenching, interference, adsorption). Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate optical sensing constraints associated with quantifying known RWT concentrations in a suite of RWT-spiked distilled water/liquid municipal biosolid (LMB) mixes. RWT flourescence decreased with an increase in LMB total suspended solids (TSS) in decay function form (R 2?=?0.98). A method was then described to correct the undersensed RWT readings based on knowledge of TSS and/or turbidity. This study also found that, for samples agitated by stirring, RWT readings increased in logarithmic form over time. In addition, sample agitation augmented the undersensing of known RWT concentrations, but when agitation ceased, optical readings immediately approached more closely the known RWT values. Studies that use RWT as a tracer to assess the fate and transport of biosolid impacted water in hydrological environments should be aware of some of the optical sensing limitations identified here.  相似文献

A series of laboratory-based incubations using a stable isotope tracer technique was applied to measure the net and gross fluxes of CH(3)Cl and CH(3)Br as well as the net fluxes of CHCl(3) from surface soils of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California. Annually averaged flux measurements show that these mineral/oxidized peat soils are a net source of CH(3)Cl (140 ± 266 nmol m(-2) d(-1)) and CHCl(3) (258 ± 288 nmol m(-2) d(-1)), and a net sink of CH(3)Br (-2.3 ± 4.5 nmol m(-2) d(-1)). Gross CH(3)Cl and CH(3)Br fluxes are strongly influenced by both soil moisture and temperature: gross production rates of CH(3)Cl and CH(3)Br are linearly correlated with temperature, whereas gross consumption rates exhibit Gaussian relationships with maximum consumption at soil moisture levels between 20 and 30% volumetric water content (VWC) and a temperature range of 25 to 35 °C. Although soil moisture and soil temperature strongly affect consumption rates, the range of gross consumption rates overall is limited (-506 ± 176 nmol m(-2) d(-1) for CH(3)Cl and -12 ± 4 nmol m(-2) d(-1) for CH(3)Br) and is similar to rates reported in previous studies. CHCl(3) fluxes are not correlated with methyl halide fluxes, temperature, or soil moisture. The annual emission rates of CHCl(3) from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta are found to be a potentially significant local source of this compound.  相似文献

Considerable uncertainties are associated with the experimental estimates of emission rates of different volatile organic compound (VOC) species from the biosphere to the atmosphere. Some of this uncertainty derives from the sampling and analytical procedures used in emission rate measurements. A calibration system was developed in order to evaluate possible errors in the measurements of biogenic emission rates using a branch enclosure system. Two types of calibration procedures were tested, a standard additions technique and an internal standard procedure. Both techniques were used to evaluate possible losses while sampling isoprene and monoterpenes, which are the most abundant VOCs of biogenic origin. The losses to Teflon lines and the empty sampling system were tested and losses to the branch enclosure system installed on two VOC emitting plant species were evaluated. A considerable loss of isoprene (approximately 18% of inflow concentration 65 ng l(-1)) to the empty enclosure system and to the system installed on the plant was measured, but no losses of monoterpenes were observed.  相似文献

Two dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) tracer tests werecarried out in a shallow aquifer north of Fort Worth, TX. i-Propanolwas used as the nonpartitioning tracer; n-hexanol and n-octanol werethe partitioning tracers. Field data, mathematical modeling, theresults of column tests, and field tracer tests with NaCl were usedin designing the DNAPL tracer tests. The results indicated the presenceof DNAPL at both sites tested; semi-quantitative estimates of theamounts of DNAPL present were obtained by mathematical modeling.Interpretation was complicated by heterogeneity of the aquifer andmass transport effects.  相似文献

A generalized mathematical model describing the crosswind-integrated concentrations is presented for dispersion of pollutants emitted from a continuous source in the atmospheric boundary layer with deposition to the ground surface. The model is based on a solution of the resulting two-dimensional steady state advection-diffusion equation with deposition to the ground surface. It considers the horizontal wind speed as a generalized function of vertical height above the ground surface and eddy diffusivity as a function of both downwind distance from the source and vertical height. Various special cases of the model are deduced. A sensitivity analysis of the model prediction of the ground-level crosswind-integrated concentrations with deposition velocity is performed. Various issues and limitations associated with this work are discussed. The model is evaluated with the observations of a depositing tracer obtained from Hanford dual diffusion experiment in stable conditions. The statistical measures show that the present model, by considering deposition, is performing well with the observations. The model is giving an over-predicting trend with the observations and predicts 100 % cases within a factor of two. On the other hand, the consideration of a non-depositing condition for a depositing tracer yields the severe over-prediction and thus, it introduces the significant errors in the model prediction. The selection of the lower boundary condition for a depositing tracer at the height of deposition surface gives better prediction than those at a height of surface roughness length.  相似文献

In this paper, a new algorithm for nitric oxide (NO) measurement based on multi-scale wavelet decomposition is proposed. The algorithm uses one-dimensional discrete multi-scale wavelet decomposition to analyze the transmission spectrum of flue gas. Through the different scales of decomposition, the relation between the absorption characteristics of NO gas and the reconstruction of wavelet coefficients is found. The DB9 wavelet can obtain the most obvious absorption characteristics of the NO gas. After calibration, the algorithm is used to measure the concentration of the mixture of NO and SO(2). The results show that the algorithm is efficient towards SO(2) absorption interference with a full-scale error less than ± 0.4% in laboratory conditions. The algorithm was then applied to field measurements with an overall standard deviation of 8.37 mg m(-3), which is better than 18.92 mg m(-3) determined by the least squares method. Under the interference of desulfurization, the full-scale measurement errors are less than ± 2%. In addition, the algorithm avoids using the reference spectrum, thereby reducing the aging of the light source effectively. It has strong anti-interference capability, good durability, and practicality in the continuous monitoring of NO.  相似文献

Measurement of intertidal rock assemblages was investigated as a potential biological indicator to provide a quantitative estimate of the impact of urbanised catchment discharge on the estuaries of Sydney, Australia, from 1995 to 1999. Based on the presence and characteristics of adjacent human activities, sampling locations were categorised as: Bush; Urban; Urban with Sewer Overflows; and Industry with Sewer Overflows. In Sydney Harbour, variation in assemblage structure was measured between most impact categories, however differences between impact categories were not consistent for each year. Nevertheless, in years of above average rainfall (1998–1999), reference assemblages adjacent to national parks and distant from urbanisation were different to all other putatively impacted assemblages. Variability within assemblages was least at reference locations in each year and greatest at locations adjacent to stormwater canals and sewer overflows, particularly in 1998–1999. Variation in assemblage structure in Sydney estuaries was most strongly correlated with chlorophyll – a concentrations. Univariate analysis also identified highly significant differences for a number of factors, however, interactions between year, impact categories and location for numerous analyses, confounded the differentiation between impact categories. The results suggest that intertidal rock assemblages in Sydney Harbour and surrounding estuaries appear to be responding to the quality and quantity of discharge from urbanised catchments and, furthermore, that assemblages are more suitable than individual taxa to indicate the difference between Bush and anthropogenically disturbed estuarine locations.  相似文献

采用超滤法、紫外-可见吸收光谱和三维荧光光谱分析法研究了北京市西城区4个典型功能区(居民区、文教区、交通区、商业区)雨水管网表层沉积物中不同分子量溶解性有机质(DOM)的分布特征和光谱特性。结果表明:雨水管网沉积物DOM以小分子量组分为主,约占整体水平的60%~70%。通过分析还发现,沉积物中小分子量(小于3k Da)DOM主要是类蛋白物质,而腐殖类物质主要集中在DOM的大分子量(大于10k Da)区域,微生物活动对小分子量DOM贡献作用显著,由此可见,DOM的分子组成和结构特性在一定程度上可以作为雨水管网沉积物DOM主成分和来源的衡量指标。4个功能区DOM腐殖化水平较低,表现出随分子量增大DOM腐殖化程度升高的规律。  相似文献

通过对常见的几种检测管法的比较,筛选出灵敏度较高的亚硝基铁氰化钠法;同时筛选出载体为60—80目的素陶瓷,指示剂浓度为20%。玻璃管内径为2.0—2.3mm,采气速度为0.3(L/min),采样体积为12L,以此条件进行实验.结果表明,检测管变色长度对应SO2浓度的相关性很好;变异系数均小于110%,检测的重现性较好。检测管的测定值与理论值的平均相对误差为5.09%(<±15%),最大相对误差为7.13%(<±25%),准确度较高.测定结果可靠;与化学法比较,两者无显著性差异;浓度小于0.15mg/m3的H2S及浓度小于0.01mg/m3的NO2对SO2检测管无干扰.  相似文献

The use of the artificially-produced radioactive isotope Cesium-137 for the measurement of soil erosion is examined in this article as an example of the development of a chemical indicator of a specific environmental stress. The theoretical and methodological bases of the technique ar examined in the context of seven criteria developed to assess the suitability of a technique as a chemical indicator. The type of results available from the application of the technique are demonstrated for research in agricultural ecosystems in Saskatchewan, Canada. The research indicates that mean soil losses within agricultural fields are 2 to 3 times higher than the tolerable soil losses for the area and that net soil export from fields is a poor indicator of the intensity of erosion within the field. The major remaining constraint to the use of the technique is the lack of a standardized sampling and analytical framework for researchers using the procedure.  相似文献

The assessment of potential impacts of wastewater effluent discharges in freshwater systems requires an understanding of the likely degrees of dilution and potential zones of influence. In this study, four tracers commonly present in wastewater effluents were monitored to compare their relative effectiveness in determining areas in freshwater systems that are likely to be impacted by effluent discharges. The four tracers selected were the human pharmaceutical carbamazepine, anthropogenic gadolinium, fluorescent-dissolved organic matter (fDOM), and electrical conductivity (EC). The four tracers were monitored longitudinally in two distinct freshwater systems receiving wastewater effluents, where one site had a high level of effluent dilution (effluent <1 % of total flow) and the other site had a low level of effluent dilution (effluent ~50 % of total flow). At both sites, the selected tracers exhibited a similar pattern of response intensity downstream of discharge points relative to undiluted wastewater effluent, although a number of anomalies were noted between the tracers. Both EC and fDOM are non-specific to human influences, and both had a high background response, relative to the highly sensitive carbamazepine and anthropogenic gadolinium responses, although the ease of measuring EC and fDOM would make them more adaptable in highly variable systems. However, the greater sensitivity and selectivity of carbamazepine and gadolinium would make their combination with EC and fDOM as tracers of wastewater effluent discharges highly desirable to overcome potential limitations of individual tracers.  相似文献

Long sampling periods are often advantageous or required for measuring air quality and characterizing exposures. However, sampling periods exceeding 8 to 24 h using thermally desorbable adsorbent tube (TDT) samplers for the measurement of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) face several challenges, including maintaining stable and low flow rates, and avoiding breakthrough of the adsorbent. These problems may be avoided using intermittent sampling; however, the literature contains few if any reports that have evaluated this technique in environmental, occupational or other applications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate continuous, intermittent and passive sampling methods using both laboratory and real-world tests. Laboratory tests compared continuous and intermittent (active) samplers in a controlled dynamic test gas generation system. Field tests used side-by-side active and passive samplers in an office, home workshop and four smokers' homes. All samples were analyzed for a wide range of VOCs by GC-MS. In most instances, intermittent sampling yielded better reproducibility (duplicate precision of 10 +/- 6%) than continuous low-flow sampling (18 +/- 5%), in part due to difficulty maintaining low flows. Concentrations obtained using intermittent sampling agreed with those for continuous sampling, with downward biases resulting primarily from errors in flow rate measurements. In the field, more VOC species were detected using active rather than passive sampling. Passive measurements were 12% lower than continuous measurements, a difference attributed to declining uptake rates at higher concentrations over the 3 to 4 d sampling period. Overall, most measurements obtained using the three sampling methods agreed within 20% for a wide range of concentrations (0.1 to 230 microg m(-3)). Both passive and intermittent sampling approaches are suitable for long sampling periods, but intermittent sampling provides greater flexibility with respect to sampling period, and permits the use of multi-bed adsorbents that can capture a wider range of VOCs.  相似文献

根据《水质石油类的测定紫外分光光度法(试行)》(HJ 970—2018)的要求,以正己烷为溶剂,采用自行设计的搅拌式液液萃取器处理样品,萃取相经硅酸镁吸附脱除极性物质后,用紫外分光光度法测定常州市城市饮用水水源地的石油类指标。结果表明:方法检出限为0.01 mg/L,线性范围为0~16.0 mg/L,相关系数为0.9998,4种不同浓度配制样品测定的相对误差为-15.0%~4.0%,相对标准偏差为2.2%~8.8%。各项技术指标均满足《HJ 970—2018》相关质量控制要求,相比手动萃取-红外分光光度法,自动搅拌萃取-紫外分光光度法能有效提高分析效率和降低职业危害。  相似文献

针对地表水高锰酸盐指数自动监测仪质量控制合格率偏低及样品和试剂消耗量大的问题,分别选择3种国产及3种进口的不同型号监测仪,通过工艺比较、性能测试、低浓度及较高浓度实际水体环境下的质量控制测试及长时间连续在线监测4个方面进行差异性研究。结果表明:不同仪器采用不同工艺,影响标准物质核查结果及运行维护成本和便捷性;不同仪器性能测试结果基本符合要求;不同仪器质量控制合格率差异显著,标准物质核查合格率(低浓度的为32%~57%,高浓度的为44%~80%)低于实际水体比对(低浓度实际水体为66%~79%,较高浓度实际水体为71%~100%),国产仪器质量控制合格率与进口仪器整体相当;不同仪器连续在线监测数据有效率及相对偏差±20%内的数据量占比差异显著,而国产仪器与进口仪器在这2个方面整体差异较小。  相似文献

As an integral part of a risk assessment of a sour gas pipeline proposed for a recreational area in the Rocky Mountain foothills, the dispersion of hydrogen sulphide was assessed using meteorological monitoring, tracer gas concentration measurement and a complex terrain diffusion model. Sulphur hexafluoride was released into the nocturnal drainage winds of two valleys in the eastern slopes of the Alberta Rockies southwest of Calgary. The resulting concentrations were measured at several points on transects at various distances from the source. The NUVAL version of the dispersion model IMPACT (Integrated Model for Plumes and Atmospherics in Complex Terrain) was site tuned using the measured concentrations and concurrent meteorological data. Relative mean absolute errors of 24–50% were obtained. The Gaussian model (PLUMES) with modified stability classes gave relative mean absolute errors of 42–64% in predicting transect maxima. Dilution rates were found to be much larger than would be experienced under similar conditions over flat terrain.  相似文献

High levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in surface waters is a common problem in urban areas that often leads to impairment of beneficial uses such as swimming. Once impaired, common management and regulatory solutions include development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) and other water quality management plans. A critical element of these plans is establishment of a "reference" level of exceedances against which to assess management goals and TMDL compliance. The goal of this study was to provide information on indicator bacteria contributions from natural streams in undeveloped catchments throughout southern California during dry weather, non-storm conditions. To help establish a regional reference data set, bacteria levels [i.e. Escherichia coli (E. coli), enterococci and total coliforms] were measured from 15 unimpaired streams in 11 southern California watersheds weekly for one full year. Concentrations measured from reference areas were typically between one to two orders of magnitude lower than levels found in developed watersheds. Nearly 82% of the time, samples did not exceed daily and monthly bacterial indicator thresholds. E. coli had the lowest daily percent exceedance (1.5%). A total of 13.7% of enterococci exceeded daily thresholds. Indicator bacteria levels fluctuated seasonally with an average of 79% of both enterococci and total coliforms exceedances occurring during summer months (June to August). Temperature, at all sites, explained about one-half the variation in total coliforms density suggesting that stream temperatures regulated bacterial populations. Accounting for natural background levels will allow for management targets that are more reflective of the contributions from natural sources.  相似文献
