The prawn Macrobrachium idae Heller carries 40 to 160 eggs depending upon the body size of the mother animal. After incubation, 63, 35 and 2% eggs are hatched on the first, second and third hatching nights, respectively. Mean dry weight of a single larva relased on the first night is 420 g (equivalent to 2.86 cal). Larvae released on the second or third hatching nights weighed 380 g (=2.56 cal) or 308 g (=2.02 cal). The total reserve yolk-energy available in a larva hatched on the first night is 1 cal. There is a definite shift from protein to fat metabolism as hatching is delayed. Oxygen consumption of developing eggs awaiting release on the first or second hatching night is 1.9 l/mg dry weight/h. In comparison to larvae released on the first night, those released on the second night exhibit 2% increase in total body-length and 2.4 or 14.3% decrease in the lengths of the 6th abdominal segment or the orbit. Larvae released on the first, second or third hatching nights, on exposure to starvation stress, survive for 3.8, 2.3 or 1.5 days. The swimming speed of larvae released on the first or second night is 1.0 or 0.6 cm/sec. Larvae released on the subsequent hatching nights committed nearly 2 times greater number of mistakes per cm distance in the horizontal plane. Since hatching of all developing eggs simultaneously on the first hatching night is possible by means of artificial technique(s), it is possible to improve survival rate of decapod larvae.  相似文献

The shortterm (10–22 d) effect of Zn, Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni on the length growth of Mytilus edulis is studied. Significant reductions of growth rate was found at 0.3 g Hgl-1, 3 g Cul-1, 10 g Znl-1, and 10 g Cdl-1 added to the local sea water, while concentrations of up to 200 gl-1 of Pb and Ni had no effect on the growth. With exposure to Cu and Zn, there was a linear reduction in growth rate with increasing metal concentration up to about 6 g Cul-1 and 100 g Znl-1. Above these levels, growth stopped with Cu, while with Zn it was stabilized at about 20% of control growth. When Hg and Cd were added, a curvilinear relationship between growth and metal concentration is indicated. With Hg, growth rate is nearly zero above 3–4 g Hgl-1, while the growth rate was 50% of control after 10 d of exposure to 100 g Cdl-1. At 2 g Cdl-1 there was a significant stimulation of length increase. Observed EC50-values for growth were 0.3–0.4 g Hgl-1, 3–4 g Cul-1, 60 g Znl-1, and 100 g Cdl-1.  相似文献

Despite some progress in reducing the average lead level in the USA, the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio, are still contaminated by heavy metals. High levels of heavy metals will have significant unequivocal ecological impacts and pose a potential health hazard. This study evaluates the level of heavy- metal contamination in household dust and examines its relationships with the external environment. Samples of outdoor and indoor dust were collected from middle-income residential homes in the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan District and the metal content was analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry. Results showed that the mean levels of lead in outdoor and indoor dusts are 650 g g-1 and 377 g g-1 and the copper levels are 253 g g-1 and 510 g g-1, respectively. The median levels are 156 g g-1 and 139 g g-1 for outdoor and indoor lead dusts and 35 g g-1 and 124 g g-1 for outdoor and indoor copper dusts. The degree of contamination may be ascribable to the age of the dwelling unit and the neighbourhood, the time when the unit was last painted, the presence of pets and the type of space heating. In addition, car exhausts seems to be a possible source of contamination.  相似文献

The average grazing and ingestion rates of all stages of the marine planktonic copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Calanoida) from nauplius stage IV to adults were measured experimentally at 15°C in agitated cultures. The chain-forming diatom Lauderia borealis and the unarmoured dinoflagellate Gymnodinium splendens were offered as food. The food concentrations were close to natural conditions and ranged from 36 to 101 g of organic carbon per liter. The medium body weights expressed in g of organic carbon of almost all larval stages raised at 49 g C/1 were identical with the weight of the same stages caught in the Pacific Ocean off La Jolla, California, USA. In a log-log system, grazing and ingestion rates increased almost linearly with increasing body weight. Grazing rates ranged from 4 to 21 ml/day/nauplius stage IV to 286 ml to 773 ml/day/female. Ingestion rates increased from 0.2 g to 0.8 g C/day/nauplius stage IV to 18 g to 69 g C/day/female. Grazing and ingestion rates per unit body weight decreased gradually with increasing body weight. The daily ingested amount of food decreased from 292 to 481% of the body weight (g C) of nauplius stage V to 28–85% of the body weight of adult females. Grazing and ingestion performances of all stages increased with increasing particle size. Grazing rates decreased and ingestion rates increased with increasing food concentrations. The published data on food intake of the different age groups of C. helgolandicus show that the young stages of herbivorous planktonic copepods can play a major part in the consumption of phytoplankton in the sea due to their high grazing and ingestion rates.  相似文献

During the course of its embryonic development, the European lobster Homarus gammarus Linnaeus exhibits progressive increases in content of water (54.0 to 83.1%), ash (2.7 to 16.7%), protein (47.4 to 50.9%) and non-protein nitrogen (1.0 to 2.4%), and steady decreases in content of fat (43.8 to 25.4%) and energy (6343 to 5431 cal/g dry organic substance). Cumulative yolk utilization efficiency during the total development is 81.8% for dry weight; the corresponding value for energy is 60.1, for protein 75.6 and for fat 47.4%. Energy content of a single egg is 10.49 cal. Of 4.20 cal expended for metabolic processes of the embryo, only 13.3% energy is drawn from protein oxidation; fat oxidation supplies as much as 87.7% energy, that of carbohydrate only 2.3%. Embryonic development results in a remarkable decrease in net yolk utilization efficiency, which falls from 85.5% in the early developmental stages, to less than 70% in later developmental stages. The mean dry weight of a single egg membrane increases from 38 g (2.2% of egg weight) in a freshly laid and attached egg, to 81 g in an egg with an almost completely developed embryo. This result supports the earlier observation of Cheung (1966) that the formation of the inner chitinous egg membrane occurs after the egg is laid and attached to the setum. Protein seems to be the major constituent of the egg membrane (4049 cal/g dry weight), which has the following composition: protein 70.4%, non-protein nitrogen 0.13%, ash 2.83%. Initial permeability of the egg membrane to water (about 6% of the total water requirement is let in) is followed by a period during which the egg membrane is almost impermeable to water (stages I to III); the egg membrane becomes permeable to water again and lets in 85% of the total water requirement (the rest, i.e. 9%, is metabolic water) at a relatively advanced stage of development. These assumed changes in egg membrane permeability appear to be indicative of variations in the egg's osmoconcentration leading to shiftings in net transport of water. Rates of water and salt uptake during embryonic development are essentially parallel (Fig. 1). The egg membrane remains permeable to salts throughout development; salt intake almost doubles after the egg passes through stage III. A single egg, weighing 3.7 mg requires 4.9 mg water for successful completion of embryonic development. The imbibition of water by the developing marine demersal egg seems to (1) serve in osmotic hatching; (2) float the hatched larva by means of specific gravity reduction; (3) aid the larva to quickly adjust its body temperature. The simple osmotic hatching mechanism, proposed by previous workers, seems to be inadequate to account for the events and timing of the hatching process in the lobster. It is suggested that hatching time is determined not solely by increased internal pressure caused by inflow of water and salts, but also by some unknown internal factor. In the lobster egg, as well as in many other marine demersal eggs, protein metabolism is suppressed to a considerable extent, and fat metabolism is geared up Thus, the non-cleidoic lobster eggs exhibit metablic properties which are typical of cleidoic eggs. This finding is discussed in the light of Needham's (1950) concept of cleidoicterrestrial and non cleidoic-aquatic eggs.Dedicated to Professor P. In order to assess the intake of lead and cadmium by consumers of home grown vegetables in urban areas, replicated experimental plots of uniform size, comprising summer and winter crops, were established in 94 gardens and allotments in nine towns and cities in England. The geometric mean lead and cadmium concentrations for the soils (n = 94) were 217 g g–1 (ranging from 27 to 1,676 g g–1) and 0.53 g g–1 (<0.2–5.9 g g–1), respectively. Compared with agricultural soils, the garden and allotment soils contained elevated levels of lead but not cadmium.Lead concentrations in the vegetables ranged from <0.25 g g–1 to 16.7 g g–1 dry weight and cadmium concentrations ranged from <0.025 g g–1 to 10.4 g g–1 dry weight. Lead concentrations were higher than reported background levels, although <1% exceeded the statutory limit for saleable food in the UK (1 g g–1 fresh weight). Cadmium concentrations were generally similar to background levels.  相似文献

Respiration and excretion by the ctenophore Mnepiopsis leidyi   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Respiration (dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide) and excretion (dissolved organic carbon, inorganic and organic nitrogen and phosphorus) rates were measured for a variety of sizes of Mnemiopsis leidyi over a temperature range of 10.3° to 24.5°C. Both respiration and excretion rates were a direct linear function of animal weight and very temperature sensitive (Q104). Oxygen uptake ranged from 155 to 489 g at O/(g dry weight) day-1 and carbon dioxide release from 43 to 166 M. Organic carbon made up about 38% of the total carbon released. Inorganic nitrogen excretion, exclusively in the form of ammonium, comprised 54% of the total nitrogen release and ranged from 10 to 36 M NH4/(g dry weight) day-1. Average release of dissolved primary amines (expressed as glycine equivalents) equaled 43% of the organic nitrogen fraction. Inorganic phosphorus release ranged from 2.0 to 4.9 M/(g dry weight) day-1 and made up about 72% of the total phosphorus loss. The turnover of elements in the body was calculated as 5 to 19% per day for carbon and nitrogen, depending on the temperature, and an even higher 20 to 48% per day for phosphorus. These values are comparable to rates observed for small, active zooplankton.  相似文献

Using atomic absorption spectroscopy, exceptionally high concentrations of iron (778 to 82,363 g g+1 dry weight) and zinc (219 to 4,183 g g+1 dry weight) were detected in the livers of Dugong dugon (Müller) from north Queensland compared with reported values for other marine mammals from other areas of the world. Levels of copper (9.1 to 608 g g+1 dry weight), cadmium (<0.1 to 59 g g+1 dry weight), cobalt (0.5 to 72 g g+1 dry weight) and silver (0.2 to 39 g g+1 dry weight) in the liver, and cadmium (0.2 to 209 g g+1 dry weight) in the kidney were also relatively high in several samples, whilst concentrations of nickel, lead and chromium were consistently below the limits of detection in all tissues. Manganese concentrations, in all tissues examined, were generally comparable with those reported from other marine mammals. Tissue concentrations of a number of metals varied with the age of the dugong. Levels of iron, zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the liver zinc and cadmium in the kidney, and iron in the muscle were significantly positively correlated with age. Copper and manganese in both liver and kidney were negatively correlated with age. Large deposits of the iron-rich pigment, haemosiderin, the quantity of which also tended to increase with age, was a conspicuous feature of the livers of all the post-natal dugongs examined histologically. It seems unlikely that the unusual metal status of the dugong reflects anthropogenic activities, since many individuals were collected in remote areas far from major sites of urbanization and industrialization. Seagrasses, the major food of dugongs, were collected from various north Queensland dugong habitat-areas and analysed. Very high concentrations of iron but low levels of copper were detected. The significance of such dietary imbalances and their possible influence on the metal status of the dugong were therefore considered.  相似文献

Adult male Neanthes arenaceodentata were exposed to 0.10±0.015 mg l-1 copper in the seawater of a continuous-flow bioassay system in the presence of a sand, a mud, a mixture of the sand and mud, and no sediment, to assess the influence of sediment type on Cu-induced mortality. The sediment type did influence mortality. The time to 50% mortality was 7.8 days without sediment, 36.5 days with sand, 54.5 days with the mixture, and 50.0 days with mud. There was no threshold Cu body burden that caused death. The mean Cu concentration per gram of N. arenaceodentata (24 h after death) without sediment was 270 g, in sand 994 g, in the mixture 1047 g, and in mud 1464 g. The differences in the toxic responses are discussed.  相似文献

Individual dry weights and ash-free dry weights for different meiofauna taxa from two soft bottom localities (31 and 117 m depth) in Gullmar Fjord on the Swedish west coast were determined. Samples from August 1980 and February 1981 of about 100 to 600 formalin-preserved specimens of each of the different taxa from each of four sieve fractions were weighed on a microbalance. Individual dry weights ranging from 0.12 g (nematodes in the 0.040-mm fraction) to 172 g (polythalamous, arenaceous Foraminifera in the 0.500-mm fraction) and ash-free dry weights ranging from 0.10 g (nematodes in the 0.040-mm fraction) to 37 g (polychaetes in the 0.500-mm fraction) were obtained. Great similarities were noted between corresponding values from the two stations as well as between summer and winter values. The percentage of organic matter, determined by ashing, in the body weight differed greatly among taxa. Some standard individual dry weight and ash-free dry weight values, to be used for re-calculation of abundance values into biomass, are presented.  相似文献

Pelagic eggs of the scaled sardine Harengula pensacolae (Goode and Bean), have been hatched and reared in the laboratory for the first time. Larvae were reared in two 75 l aquaria under constant illumination, at an average temperature of 26.2°C. Zooplankton collected in a 35 mesh net was fed to the newly hatched larvae, and the diet was supplemented later with Artemia salina nauplii and a pelleted food. Larvae hatched at 4 mm TL (total length), and metamorphosed about 25 days later at 25 to 30 mm TL. Survivors averaged 76 mm TL 100 days after hatching. Of the 500 incubated eggs, 2.8% survived until 20 days, after which no significant natural mortality occurred. Sources of natural mortality included starvation, a copepod parasite (Caligus sp.), and injuries from contact with the sides of the tank. Larvae began feeding at 4.5 mm TL on copepod nauplii averaging 62 in body width. Scaled sardines were photopositive throughout the larval stage.Contribution No. 149, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory, Miami, Florida 33149, USA.  相似文献

Soil and water samples were collected from the Susaki area of Korinthos and analysed for heavy metals in order to evaluate their environmental impact. The geology of the studied area includes ultrabasic rocks and Neogene and Quaternary deposits whereas magnesite veins are found within the ultrabasic rocks. In the north part of the studied area post volcanic emissions of H2S, CO2 and H2O vapor continue to the present day. All the samples were analysed for heavy metals by the ICP method. The element ranges (in g g–1) for soil samples are: Cu 11–63, Pb 5–256, Zn 21–604, Ni 183–2665, Co 12–124, Mn 456–1434, As 5–104, Sr 44–730, V 21–84, Cr 163–2346, Ba 48–218, Zr 3–41, Y 3–13. The metals Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, Cu, Mn, As and Sr are enriched in the Susaki soils. The element ranges for water samples are: Cu 65–103ppb, Pb<10ppb, Zn<5ppb, Ni 21–163ppb, Co 2–12ppb, As<30ppb, Cr<20ppb, Ba 36–785ppb, Sb<10ppb, W<10ppb, Bi<30ppb, Mn 0.0–0.9 g g–1, Fe 0.01–0.22 g g–1, Na 843–3076 g g–1, K 98–278 g g–1, Si 39–65 g g–1, P 0.1–0.2 g g–1. There is a natural pollution of soils with elevated concentrations of Ni, Co, Mn, Fe and Cr due to the presence of ultrabasic rocks. Another natural case of As pollution of soils is due to the volcanic activity and the geothermal field in the area. The geochemical data of ground waters and also the 18, D data showed a mixing in different proportions between sea water and meteoric water.  相似文献

Analyses of individual content of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) were carried out for all larval stages of Pagurus bernhardus and Carcinus maenas, and for newly metamorphosed crabs. Maximum range in total larval development is 12.8 to 165.8 g C, 3.2 to 35.1 g N, and 1.9 to 24.9 g H in P. bernhardus and 3.1 to 43.2 g C, 0.7 to 10.1 g N, and 0.4 to 6.3 g H in C. maenas. From these data energy equivalents were calculated. Maximum range in total larval life is 0.43 to 6.38 J ind. -1 in P. bernhardus and 0.1 to 1.49 J ind. -1 in C. maenas. There is a 32.4% mean loss of energy in P. bernhardus megalopa development; this seems to describe the normal developmental pattern in this stage. Biomass was determined as fresh and dry weight respectively. Individual dry weight is about 3.6 to 5.6 times higher in P. bernhardus (44 to 340 g) than in C. maenas (12 to 93 g) larvae.Contribution to research project Experimentelle marine Ökosystemanalyse sponsored by Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie, Bonn (Grant No. MFU-0328/1)  相似文献

Adult Elasmopus rapax, collected from the eastern coast of Venezuela in 1990, were exposed to seawater containing various CdCl2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 5.5 mol l-1. The 48-h and 96-h LC50 values obtained were 4.0 and 1.6 mol Cd l-1, respectively. In amphipods exposed to 1 mol Cd l-1 for up to 240 h, the apparent rate of cadmium uptake was higher in dead animals (most of which had molted during the preceding 24 to 48 h) than in those which survived throughout the treatments without molting. Thus, whole-body cadmium content reached 1.74 mol g-1 dry weight (dw) in the former and only 0.85 mol g-1 dw in the latter; the higher body Cd-load may have caused the increased mortality observed in molters. On exposure to cadmium levels above 0.5 mol l-1 the oxygen consumption rate of non-molters decreased from 2.2 to about 1.5 ml O2 g-1 dw h-1 over the first 24 h, remaining unchanged thereafter. The results place E. rapax among the most sensitive marine organisms yet studied concerning cadmium toxicity, and emphasize the usefulness of the Amphipoda as bioindicators and research tools for bioassays.  相似文献

The adenylate energy charge ratio (EC) of 8 species of zooplankton ranged from 0.70 to 0.89. Eucalanus subcrassus had significantly (P<0.05) lower EC when captured during a 30-min tow than during a 3-min tow, indicating stress at capture. The concentration of ATP in the 8 species ranged from 9.1 to 36.0 g/mg protein and from 0.17 to 15.7 g/mg dry weight. Excluding a low value for the ctenophore Pleurobrachia sp., the average concentration was 8.1 g ATP/mg dry weight, which is equivalent to an approximate C/ATP ratio of 50.Contribution from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australia, and the Institute of Marine Biology, University of Bergen, Norway  相似文献

The concentrations of cadmium in 428 samples of the sea-skater Halobates micans from 57 locations in the central and south Atlantic Ocean ranged from 1.7 to 122 g Cd g-1 dry wt. The concentrations in females, males and nymphs were not significantly different. The data suggest that the cadmium concentrations in these insects are somehow related to surface currents. The highest values (50 to 70 g g-1, maximum value 122 g g-1) were recorded from the South Equatorial Current region; intermediate values (10 to 20 g g-1) from the Equatorial Counter Current and the North Equatorial Current; and relatively low concentrations (>10 g g-1) from the Canary Current in the north and the Benguela Current in the south. A remarkable feature of these data lies in the fact that they reveal areas of high Cd content which correspond closely with those indicated by data obtained by Bull et al. (1977) from a different set of samples, analyzed by different methods and obtained in different years.  相似文献

Amino acid uptake and respiration by marine heterotrophs   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The concentration and turnover of dissolved free amino acids were measured in samples from 25 and 100 m on three occasions at a station 6 miles off the California (USA) coast. Individual amino acid concentrations varied from undetectable (<0.05 g/l) to 3 g/l, the total amino acid concentration from 1.8 to 8.5 g/l. The greater concentration of total amino acids was always found at 25 m. The predominant amino acids were serine, lysine, aspartate, glutamate and alanine; reliable analyses could not be made for glycine because of a high blank. For the 10 individual amino acids studied, the rate of heterotrophic turnover ranged from undetectable to 1.2 g/l day-1; serine, aspartate, alanine and glutamate showed the highest rates. In samples from 25 m, the rates were 15 to 20 times higher than those taken from 100 m. The total calculated flux of the amino acids studied varied from 0.015 to 3.2 g/l day-1 and amounted to 1–10% of photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to observe effects of dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) on larvae of Mytilus edulis for an exposure period of 25 d. Endpoints for evaluation were shell growth and mortality measured at 33 d. Larvae were cultured in a new laboratory assay chamber in a recirculating static test. The control, 2, 20, and 200 g/l DBT-treated populations had mean shell lengths of 527, 523, 417, and 180 m, respectively. Survival was 1% for the 200 g/l DBT-treated population, but ranged from 73 to 83% for controls, 2, and 20 g/l treatments. The no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) was 2 g/l for DBT, while the lowest-observed-effect concentration (LOEC) was 20 g/l. The chronic toxicity value was 6.3 g/l. In the TBT bioassay, mean shell lengths for the control, 0.006, 0.050, and 0.130 g/l-treated populations were 565, 437, 385, and 292 m, respectively. Control survival was 74%, whereas TBT-treated populations survival ranged from 52 to 58%. The NOEC for TBT was 0.006 g/l TBT and the LOEC was 0.050. A chronic toxicity value of 0.017 g/l was calculated. The results of this study indicated that the toxicity of DBT was less than that of TBT. It was concluded that shell length was inversely related to exposure level in both DBT and TBT bioassays. In this study, we have observed TBT effects at lower exposure levels in the laboratory than previously reported, and also report the first data for DBT effects on mussel larvae.  相似文献

Uptake of cadmium by the eelgrassZostera marina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The uptake of cadmium by the shoots ofZostera marina L. (eelgrass) was examined in the laboratory. Experiments were carried out in experimental chambers which allowed the separation of the leaves from the root-rhizome portions of intact shoots. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizome portions over 24 h was directly related to substrate cadmium concentration (1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 g Cd ml-1) and varied from 6.5 to 30.0 g Cd g-1. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves in a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 was also related to exposure times (24, 48 and 72 h). Maximum uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves was observed after 72 h at a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 and was equivalent to 48 and 94 g Cd g-1, respectively. Translocation of cadmium from the leaves to the root-rhizomes was observed after 24 h, and at the end of 72 h was equivalent to 27% of the total leaf uptake. No cadmium movement from the root-rhizomes to the leaves was detected.  相似文献

The coralline alga Phymatolithon calcareum was dredged from 13 m in the Kattegatt, Baltic Sea, in December, 1980, and its rate of calcification was measured by 45Ca++-uptake methods. Light-saturated calcification rates at 5°C ranged from 15.8 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the basal parts of the plants to 38.7 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the tips. These age gradients were not apparent when calcification rates were expressed on the basis of surface area. Experiments with salinity (10, 20, 30) and temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°C) indicated that optimum conditions for calcification were at 30 S and at temperatures above 10°C. Salinity had a greater influence on calcification rate than did temperature, and there was a positive relationship between salinity and calcification rate at all temperatures. In 6 mo old cultures, salinity was again the important factor, with all plants remaining healthy at 30 except those at the highest temperature (20°C). These trends, and the low calcification rates at 10S (4.6 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 at 5°C to 8.6 g CaCO3g-1 dry wt h-1 at 20°C) suggest that low salinity may be the explanation for the general absence of P. calcareum from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. Short-term experiments in which salinity was kept constant while Ca++ concentration was altered, and experiments in which salinity was varied and Ca++ concentration kept constant, suggest that it is the calcium ion concentration and not salinity per se which affects calcification rates.  相似文献
