Baseline concentrations together with biological variations of 29 trace elements (Ag, As, Au, Ba, Br, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, I, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Tb, Th, Yb, Zn and Zr) were investigated in the brown alga, Sargassum filipendula collected from the western coast of Sri Lanka. Several elements (Co, Cr, Fe, Hf, Ni, Sc, Se, Th, Zr and the rare earth elements) were found to be enriched in S. filipendula compared to NIES No. 9 Sargasso reference material. Concentration of strontium in S. filipendula was highest at all sites. Chemical abundance of the rare earth elements decreased approximately linearly with increasing atomic numbers. The pattern of elemental distribution appears to be due to the fact that S. filipendula seems capable of concentrating high levels of trace elements under conditions of their very low availability in sea water. Concentration factors for elements in S. filipendula lie in a higher range compared with those reported in the literaure for brown algae.  相似文献

In the Baltic Sea, the broadly distributed brown alga Fucus vesiculosus coexists in sympatry over part of its range (south west Gulf of Bothnia) with the Baltic endemic F. radicans sp. nov, while further north in colder and lower-salinity areas of the Baltic F. radicans occurs alone (north west Gulf of Bothnia). F. radicans appears to have arisen via rapid speciation from F. vesiculosus within the recent history of the Baltic (ca. 7500 BP). Possible functional divergence between the two species was investigated by comparing stress-responsive gene expression in a common-garden experiment. The experiment used two allopatric populations of Fucus vesiculosus from the Skagerrak (North Sea) and Central Baltic, as well as F. radicans from the same Central Baltic site. The two species in sympatry displayed divergent heat shock responses, while F. vesiculosus populations from allopatric sites did not. F. radicans was more sensitive to heat shock at 25°C, either alone or together with high irradiance and desiccation, than Baltic or Skagerrak F. vesiculosus. The results indicate that rapid functional divergence in the inducible heat shock response has occurred between sympatric species on a timescale of thousands of years.  相似文献

Plant phenols tend to accumulate under conditions where plants have excess carbon above the level which can be used for growth, and where phenylalanine, the substrate of phenylpropanoid synthesis, accumulates due to suppressed protein synthesis. These internal balances imply an accumulation of phenols as a consequence of nitrogen deficiency suppressing plant primary metabolism. In three sublittoral populations of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus (L.) collected from the northern Baltic Sea between May and September 1982, the accumulation of phenolic compounds correlated inversely with nitrogen content of thallus; higher phenolic contents were on average found under nitrogen deficiency. Phenolic content did not correlate with carbon content of thallus as such, while a significant negative correlation was found with the nitrogen: carbon ratio. Phenolic compounds, although having possibly defensive functions in plants, may thus partially vary as a function of resource availability rather than as a result of an active allocation into plant defences.  相似文献

Environmental and/or genetic among-site variation in plant quality may influence growth and fecundity of specialized herbivores inhabiting a particular site. Such variation is important as it generates spatial variation in selection for traits related to plant–herbivore interaction. Littoral macroalgae are known to respond plastically to environmental variation by modifying their chemistry or morphology. We studied geographic variation in phlorotannin, nitrogen, protein, and sugar (fucose, mannitol, and melibiose) concentrations of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus at 12 sites separated by 0.5 to 40 km in the naturally fragmented Archipelago Sea in the northern Baltic Sea. By this regional variation in algal chemistry we attempted to explain among-population variation in size and fecundity of the crustacean herbivore Idotea baltica. We observed high spatial variation in all the measured chemical characteristics of F. vesiculosus, as well as in female size and the number of eggs produced by the herbivores. Spatial variation in nitrogen or protein contents of the alga did not explain the variation of herbivore traits. However, egg size positively covaried with spatial variation in the concentration of mannitol, the major storage carbohydrate of the alga. Such a positive relationship may arise if I. baltica can utilize the nutritive value of a mannitol-rich diet thereby being better able to provision the developing eggs with energy-rich metabolites. Unexpectedly, the concentration of phlorotannins, secondary metabolites having a putative role in defense against herbivory, positively covaried with the size of the herbivore. Among-population variation in host plant chemistry and covariation of that with herbivore growth and reproduction imply that herbivores respond to the local quality of their host plants, and that geographical structuring of populations has to be taken into account in studies of plant–herbivore interactions.Communicated by M. It is expected that the Baltic region becomes a major centre of economic growth and prosperity in Europe already during this decade (Anon. 2000). Therefore, an Agenda 21 for the Baltic region (Baltic 21) was developed to ensure a sustainable development. Especially the coastal ecosystems are subject to increasing anthropogenic pressure e.g. eutrophication, traffic, harbours, tourism or offshore wind parks. Eutrophication remains the main ecological problem in the Baltic Sea and has serious negative social and economical consequences. Inner and outer coastal waters play an important role as buffers and filters for the Baltic proper. Consequently, the utilization and preservation of their self-purification capacity is of great importance. Combined results of our own coastal research and of the international workshop ‘Baltic coastal ecosystems: structure, function and coastal zone management’ (Rostock University, November 2001) are presented here. Conclusions for an improved integrated coastal zone management of Baltic coastal ecosystems will be presented.  相似文献

In 1984, 115 samples of the starfish Asterias rubens L. collected in the south-eastern part of Cadet Trench (Mecklenburg Bay/Western Baltic Sea) were analyzed for their contents of a few major (calcium, magnesium) and trace elements (cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). Distinct differences were found between starfish from different stations, and these are attributed to the composition of the sediments acting as a substrate for their prey (mussels, snails). Except for cadmium, the concentrations of the elements studied all correlated negatively with the diameter and weight of the starfish.

Parallel analyses of starfish arms and the central discs of the same animals showed that iron, zinc, copper and mercury levels were 16 to 30% higher, and selenium, manganese, magnesium, calcium and lead were 4 to 9% higher in the arms. Cadmium concentrations were 20% higher in the central discs than in the arms.

Stock estimations (about 52,000 tons fresh weight) show that starfish play a significant role in the benthic ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea. They can consume up to 200,000 tons of mussels and clams (Mytilus edulis, Macoma baltica) a year and may therefore represent a notable factor in the trace metal balance of the region.  相似文献

Allozyme electrophoresis was conducted in an attempt to identify the origin ofMarenzelleria sp. found in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The analysis covered eight enzymes with ten loti from nine populations found on the North American Atlantic toast, these populations in the North Sea and five populations in the Baltic. The North Sea spionids correspond to the Type IMarenzelleria from North American coastal waters between Barnstable Harbor (Massachusetts) and Cape Henlopen (Delaware). Nei's genetic distance between these North American populations and those from the North Sea wasD = 0.010 to 0.020. TheMarenzelleria sp. found in the Baltic Sea very probably stems from North American populations of Type II found from the region of Chesapeake Bay (Trippe Bay) south to the Currituck Sound (North Carolina). The genetic distance between these North American populations and the Baltic populations isD = 0.000 to 0.001. The invaders appear to have lost little of their genetic variation while colonizing the North and Baltic Seas. Probably, both colonizing events tan be attributed to large numbers of individuals reaching Europe simultaneously on one or more occasions. In addition, aMarenzelleria Type III was found by electrophoresis among specimens from Currituck Sound (North Carolina), rohere it is sympatric withMarenzelleria Type II. Salinity is discussed as an important factor for the establishment ofMarenzelleria Type I in the North Sea and Type II in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) contents in the otoliths of yellow and silver European eels [Anguilla anguilla (L.)] collected from coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lake in Sweden were examined by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry with an electron microprobe. The mean Sr/Ca ratios from elver check to otolith edge were significantly higher for the eels from coastal waters (5.39 ± 1.09‰) than for those from the lake (0.71 ± 0.89‰). The evidence indicates that European eels in the Baltic Sea do not necessarily migrate into freshwater streams during the growth phase. Received: 30 September 1999 / Accepted: 6 April 2000  相似文献

Pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS) has been tested on five freeze-dried cultures of ectocarpoid algae and on live tissue from three field populations of Fucus species. The technique enabled discrimination of Baltic and Irish Sea isolates of Pilayella littoralis. The results were in agreement with the view that P. littoralis and Hincksia ovata may be considered members of a single family (Ectocarpaceae) and support the location of Elachista fucicola in the Elachistaceae. Microspongium globosum was least similar to the other isolates and, on present evidence, should be located in another higher taxon (Myrionemataceae?). Baltic F. vesiculosus could be distinguished from conspecific plants from the Irish Sea, but the technique failed to separate clearly Irish Sea F. serratus and F. vesiculosus. This anomalous result is considered a probable consequence of introgression occurring at a shore level where the two species coexist. It is concluded that PyMS has considerable potential in the study of brown algal systematics.  相似文献

The marine phanerogamPosidonia oceanica (L.) Delile was collected from a presumably unpolluted reference area in Port Cros National Park, Mediterranean Sea, in November 1985, and its elemental composition was studied by gamma spectrometry after neutron activation and by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. Neutron-activation analysis revealed 23 elements and atomic-absorption spectrophotometry 4 others. Including all known records by other investigators, this brings the total of elementary components identified inP. oceanica up to 42: antimony, arsenic, barium, bromine, cadmium, cesium, calcium, carbon, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, europium, gold, hafnium, hydrogen, iodine, iron, lanthanum, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, rubidium, samarium, scandium, selenium, silver, sodium, strontium, tantalum, terbium, thorium, uranium, ytterbium, zinc, zirconium. These elements display significant differences in their distribution in the various parts of the plant (roots, rhizomes, and growing and freshly budded leaves).  相似文献

The use of benthic organisms as bioindicators in the aquatic environment is a suitable method for assessing the effects of contaminants in coastal waters. The accumulation of heavy metals in body tissues due to lifestyle and feeding mechanisms makes it possible to reveal contamination rates and recovery trends within polluted areas. Comparing a polluted historical dumping site in the inner Mecklenburg Bight (western Baltic Sea) with a less-contaminated reference site at the edge of the Mecklenburg Bight, representing the background contamination of the western Baltic Sea, the present study discusses the population structure and heavy metal exposure of the ocean quahog Arctica islandica L. (Mollusca, Bivalvia) and evaluates this organism as a bioindicator for contaminated sediments. The organism density was higher at the reference site in comparison to the dumping site. The absence of juvenile and adult individuals at the dumping site seems to be a sign that this ecological environment has not completely regenerated since the dumping event in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Heavy metal concentrations of copper, lead, and zinc in the soft body tissue of A. islandica were analysed using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Shell measurements were carried out using laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Particularly the concentrations of copper and lead were significantly higher in the soft body tissue as well as in the shell from the dumping site than from the reference site. For pollutant biomonitoring research, the shells of the ocean quahog can be used as an indicator for heavy metal accumulation. The quantity of epiphytic filamentous algae varies considerably in macroalgal vegetation along rocky shores of the northern Baltic Proper. The main species responsible for irregular mass occurrences is the summer annual brown algaEctocarpus siliculosus (Dillw.) Lyngb. In this study, data collected over a 3-yr monitoring period are related to hydrographical parameters. The tideless and brackish Baltic Sea is salinity stratified, and the salinity difference between surface and bottom waters can be used to indicate upwelling events. Mass occurrences developed when the salinity difference was low. These salinity differences explained 87% of the observed increase inE. siliculosus cover. We propose that the slight salinity changes themselves do not affect the growth ofE. siliculosus, but rather they can be used as indicators of short nutrient pulses. These nutrient pulses are not detected in standard water sampling, as they are utilised by both pelagic and benthic organisms within a few hours or days. If the proposed mechanism is true, changes in wind speed and direction have an important effect on the nutrient dynamics of littoral algal communities. A higher frequency of SW winds may cause mass occurrences of filamentous algae, which are often believed to indicate eutrophication of an anthropogenic origin.  相似文献

Concentrations of zinc and cadmium in whole soft parts of mussels, Mytilus edulis (L.), collected from 54 locations in Scandinavian waters were determined. Local variations in concentrations of the two metals found in samples taken close to industrial sources of zinc and cadmium confirmed the ability of the mussel to act as an accurate indicator of pollution by these metals over the entire range of salinities in which this species can exist. In addition, offshore samples remote from industrial discharges revealed higher concentrations of zinc and cadmium in mussels from lowsalinity areas (Gulf of Finland, Southern Bothnian Sea, Baltic proper) than in those from high-salinity areas (Kattegat, Eastern Skagerrak). Major decreases in metal concentrations present in the mussel were apparent in the regions of the Sound and the Great Belt, which are areas of rapid salinity change due to mixing of Baltic water with water from Kattegat. Comparison of these results with those reported for zinc and cadmium in water throughout the study area suggested the existence of a higher biological availability of these metals in regions of low salinity; possible reasons for this are discussed. Data from the present survey are also compared to those reported for mussels taken elsewhere. This comparison reveals the Baltic area to be considerably polluted by trace metals; in contrast, the waters of Kattegat and skagerrak are considered to be relatively unpolluted.  相似文献

Forty-six trace elements in coastal Casuarina equisetifolia plant–soil systems at nine sampling sites on Hainan Island were analyzed using ICP-MS. The relationships among the trace elements of the same group or the same periodicity of the Periodic Table in the plants and soils were complex and no consistent patterns were found. More combinations of elements occurred with high positive correlation coefficients within the same periodicity than within the same group of the Periodic Table, and there were more high positive correlations in soils than in plants. However, there were many element combinations in Block d (transition elements) with high positive correlation coefficients in plants. Markedly high positive correlation coefficients between individual rare earth elements and Y and among Zr, Nb, Cd existed in both plants and soils. The dendrograms obtained by cluster analysis show that rare earth elements had very similar occurrence and distribution in both soils and plants. Thus, they behaved as a coherent group of elements both geochemically and biogeochemically. The transition elements were more coherent in plants than in soils.  相似文献

Measurements of primary production in the Baltic Sea over a period of 2 years (1969/1971) by the 14C method are reported. The rate of total annual production for the Baltic Sea proper and the Gulf of Finland including coastal areas appears to lie between 35 and 40 gC·m2, a rate which can be assumed as characteristic for oligotrophic waters with a low production rate. An apparent increase in productivity between the 2 years could be noted. Calculations for the water mass below the halocline show that between 0.7 and 0.8 ml/l oxygen is used up during a period of 3 months required for the development of anoxic conditions. The major portion of the organic matter in the Baltic Sea undergoes decomposition in the sub-photic zone above the halocline. The ratio of organic material in deep water to the total available oxidizable matter appears to remain constant with time; therefore, the apparent increase in productivity in the photic layer does not affect apprecibly the development of anoxic conditions in deep water. Of the different areas investigated, the Gulf of Finland seems to be the most productive. In the southern Baltic Sea, the rate of production over 5 years between 1966 and 1971 has not changed appreciably. In fact, it shows a trend toward a slight decrease, whereas, in other areas of the Baltic Sea, the rate of production indicates an apparent increase. Comparison with oceanic coastal areas of the west coast of Sweden shows that the rate of production there is higher than in the Baltic Sea. Of the micronutrients controlling productivity in the photic layer of the Baltic Sea, nitrate has a stronger limiting effect on plant growth than phosphate, a fact which is in agreement with existing conceptions on the subject. Dissolved iron does not seem to exert any appreciable influence on the productivity.  相似文献

Intertidal organisms exposed to thermal stress normally experience other stresses simultaneously, but how these combined stresses modify tolerance to heat, especially for embryos, is poorly understood. Tolerance of fucoid algal embryos to heat, with and without acclimation to a sublethal temperature and with simultaneous exposure to hypersaline media, was examined. Embryos of Fucus vesiculosus L. (mid-intertidal zone) were less tolerant than embryos of Fucus spiralis L. (upper intertidal zone); without acclimation and with a growth temperature of 14°C, about half of the embryos survived 3 h exposure to 33°C in F. vesiculosus and of 35°C in F. spiralis. Conditions experienced by parental thalli (4°C versus 14°C storage) significantly affected the heat tolerance of embryos grown for 24 h post-fertilization at 14°C in F. vesiculosus, a result that is important for biologists using fucoid algae as model systems. Acclimation to a sublethal temperature (29°C) or exposure to the LT50 (33°C, F. vesiculosus; 35°C, F. spiralis) in 100 psu seawater (2850 mmol kg–1 osmolality) resulted in 30–50% higher levels of embryonic survival. Higher levels of HSP60s were found in embryos exposed to 29–33°C than to 14°C; lower levels of HSP60s were present in embryos exposed to the LT50 under hypersaline conditions than in normal seawater. Contemporaneous studies in 1995–1996 of substratum temperature and desiccation levels were made at Schoodic Point, Maine (USA) underneath F. spiralis and F. vesiculosus canopies and in Semibalanus balanoides patches. This study extends the bioindicator utility of heat-shock proteins in studies of intertidal organisms and demonstrates the importance of integrated stress responses in survival of a single stress factor (e.g. temperature).Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at  相似文献

The occurrence of zooplankton species, indicating a salinewater influx from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea in 1972, is described. Particular attention is paid to 8 species so far unknown in this region (Ectopleura dumortieri, Rosacea plicata, Tomopteris kefersteini, Aetideus armatus, Centropages typicus, Eucalanus elongatus, Metridia lucens, Electra pilosa). The appearance of these zooplankters in the Southern Baltic Sea is discussed in relation to the hhdrographic changes taking place in this area in 1972. Based on these data, assessments are made regarding the intensity of dynamic exchange processes in the Baltic and North Atlantic waters in 1972.  相似文献

Total metal concentrations (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn) and their distribution in different chemical forms (speciation) were determined in sediments from the Adriatic Sea in order to evaluate contamination and mobility of metals. The study was carried out on marine sediments collected in two areas of the Adriatic Sea differently influenced by Po river waters. Metal distribution in the study area depends prevalently on water circulation and on organic matter distribution. Among metal levels, significant correlations between copper and zinc and between lead and nickel were found, suggesting common and specific sources. As regards metal speciation, the distribution of different chemical forms changes with the metal. The prevailing zinc phases, for example mobile forms, and sulphide together are greater than 50% of total metal. Nickel is mainly present in sediments as sulphide, and the preferential association of copper with organic matter is evident. Lead and manganese are preferentially found as mobile forms (more of 30% for lead, 40% or more for manganese).  相似文献

Spatial and temporal patterns of gene-enzyme variation were estimated in the sibling species Gammarus zaddachi Sexton and G. salinus Spooner by starch gel electrophoresis. Twenty-one G. zaddachi and 18 G. salinus populations from coastal and estuarine areas in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and other localities of north-western Europe were surveyed. Both amphipods display similar electrophoresis patterns of the enzyme systems studied. Considerable interspecific and interpopulational differences were detected in allele frequencies at three highly polymorphic loci, phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI), glutamate oxalacetate transaminase (GOT) and arginine phosphokinase (APK). G. zaddachi exhibits a pronounced genetic heterogeneity in most areas of the sampled range. Populations from northern French and western English coasts differ significantly from the other samples in allele frequencies at the PGI or APK locus, respectively. Baltic populations are widely uniform in their genetic composition but can be distinguished from samples taken at North Sea sites in allele frequencies at the APK locus. The latter reveal a clinal variation, ranging from the Danish to the French coast. In contrast to G. zaddachi, a low degree of genetic differentiation was observed among the G. salinus populations examined. This indicates that migration and interregional mixing may be more important in maintaining the genetic structure than in G. zaddachi which, compared to G. salinus, prefers habitats of lower salinity levels. Evidently, less extensive dispersal capabilities owing to the confinement of G. zaddachi to brackish waters of dilute salt concentrations may account for a diminished gene flow and considerable genetic separation of local populations. This assumption is supported by the genetic homogeneity documented in Baltic G. zaddachi populations. In view of the low and constant salinities in wide areas of this brackish-water sea such barriers do not exist. Survey studies performed with selected populations over a 3-yr period demonstrated a general pattern of temporal constancy in the allozyme variation observed.  相似文献
