Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) contents were measured daily during the zoeal development of the crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould). DNA concentration (per unit protein) decreased as larvae increased in size. Total DNA content per larva showed an abrupt increase at the second molt and increased steadily during the third and fourth zoeal stages. Ratios of fresh weight to DNA were highest during the first two zoeal stages, dropped sharply at the second molt, then increased during the third and fourth zoeal stages. RNA:DNA ratios showed cyclical activity apparently related to the molt cycle. Assuming that fresh weight: DNA ratio reflects cell size and that DNA content reflects cell number, growth during the first two stages is due primarily to increase in cell size and during the last two stages to a combination of increase in cell size and number. Assuming further that RNA:DNA ratios reflect protein-synthesis activity, such activity in these larvae follows a rhythm related to the molt cycle.  相似文献

Brood size and chemical composition (carbon, nitrogen, and ash) of Pareuchaeta norvegica in Loch Etive, Scotland have been determined. From 23 to 37 eggs were found in each egg mass (mean=30 eggs). The eggs are oval; the mean size of the longer axis is 438 m. Variation in egg mass (as dry weight) is related to increase in dry weight of the maternal body. an increase of 1 mg in maternal body dry weight produces an increase of 0.03 mg dry weight in the egg mass. Carbon content increases with increasing body dry weight both in pre-spawning and spent females, but nitrogen content decreases with increasing body weight. Thus, the carbon:nitrogen ratio increases with increasing body dry weight. The carbon content of an egg mass ranges from 61.4 to 65.3%, and nitrogen content from 9.6 to 13.2% of the total dry weight. Some examples of partitioning of chemical components of the maternal body into the egg mass are also described.  相似文献

Eggs from two separate spawning stocks of the red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus) were hatched, and the larvae were reared in the laboratory for 2 wk under closely controlled conditions. Total RNA, DNA, and soluble protein were measured in each population daily in triplicate pooled samples of larvae from each of three tanks. Growth rate in mm d-1 was determined for each population at 2 d intervals. Growth rate explained 72 and 95% of the variation in the RNA:DNA ratios of the two populations individually, and 86% of the variation in the RNA:DNA ratio when data from the two populations were combined. The RNA:DNA ratio appeared to be most effective as an indicator of growth in rapidly growing larvae, and to lose some resolution when growth was intermittent. The rates of deposition of RNA, DNA, and protein into tissue were all highly correlated with growth rate and with each other. Mean population RNA:DNA ratios of red drum yolk-sac larvae decreased from Day 1 post-hatch until larvae initiated successful feeding behavior, and then increased steadily throghout the remainder of the experimental period. This pattern of change in the RNA:DNA ratios during the yolk-sac stage appears to be an intrinsic developmental pattern of red drum ontogeny. The lowest values for the RNA:DNA ratio were observed just prior to the initiation of feeding or during the critical period, indicating that red drum larvae experience a decrease in capacity for protein synthesis as they initiate feeding. Intrinsic variation in the RNA:DNA ratio during development suggests that caution be used when comparing the RNA:DNA ratios of yolk-sac larvae to a critical ratio calculated from Buckley's general model.  相似文献

Levels of DNA, RNA, and protein were measured in scyphistomae of the scyphozoans Aurelia aurita and Chrysaora quinquecirrha during strobilation. In synchronously developing populations of A. aurita, the amount of DNA per polyp increases 41 to 260% during strobilation, whereas RNA and protein remain relatively constant. The RNA/DNA ratio drops by about 50% during strobilation in both C. quinquecirrha and A. aurita, and protein/DNA decreases by 50% in A. aurita. Specific RNA reserves are probably not accumulated in advance of strobilation, since strobilation is blocked immediately in both species by 1 to 3 g/ml actinomycin D. The size and DNA content of polyps are usually increased by prolonged incubation at temperatures of 12° to 15°C, which facilitates strobilation; however, the RNA/DNA and protein/DNA ratios of such polyps are not significantly increased by the cold conditioning.Contribution No. 472 from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.  相似文献

The burrowing marine shrimp Callianassa australiensis (Dana) was collected from an uncontaminated area in Western Port, Victoria, Australia in 1977. The shrimp were exposed to cadmium-contaminated water and sediment for 8 wk. The concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 63 g Cd 1-1 for water and 0.5 to 63 g Cd g-1 for sediment. The shrimp accumulated cadmium from water at a rate commensurate with increases in the concentration of cadmium in water and the duration of the experiment. Although the cadmium concentration in the sediments was 103 times higher than that in water, it hat no effect on cadmium uptake by the shrimp. The concentration factors decreased with increasing concentration of cadmium in water but increased as the duration of exposure increased. The shrimp dry weight decreased with increasing concentration of cadmium in water and duration of exposure. As was the case with cadmium uptake by the shrimp, these two factors acted interactively on the shrimp dry weight, but the third factor, concentration of cadmium in sediment, had no effect.  相似文献

Comparison of the life-histories of two species pairs of caridean decapods, each pair containing a polar and a more temperate-water species (Chorismus antarcticus (Pfeffer, 1887)/Pandalus montagui Leach, 1814 and Notocrangon antarcticus (Pfeffer, 1887)/ crangon crangon (Linnaeus, 1758), suggested that in each case the polar species was more of a K-strategist than was the temperate species. In particular there were striking differences in brood size, egg weight and maturity of the newly hatched larvae. Measurements of individual annual reproductive effort, RE, as g fresh weight eggs per g fresh weight female indicated that in both species pairs the RE of the polar K-strategist was significantly less than that of the comparable temperate water r-strategist. Results expressing RE as g total egg lipid per g fresh weight female were equivocal. These data are discussed in relation to available autecological information for Anterctic marine invertebrates and it is concluded that many features of the polar benthos are explicable in terms of a general evolution of typical K-strategies. The role of low temperature in the widespread evolution of K-strategies may be crucial; consideration of this leads to a re-appraisal of cold-adaptation.  相似文献

The use of nucleic acids to estimate crustacean growth is not well documented, and may be complicated by biochemical changes associated with their molt cycle. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of molt stage on nucleic acid concentrations in abdominal muscle tissue of juvenile white shrimp,Penaeus vannamei, and to examine the relationship between nucleic acid concentrations and growth rates of shrimp exposed to different feeding regimes throughout a 12 d feeding experiment. RNA and DNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were not significantly different among the five major molt stages early postmolt, late postmolt, intermolt, early premolt, and late premolt. In the feeding experiment, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios accounted for >70% of the variation in shrimp growth on three different sampling days. In addition, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were used successfully to discriminate between unfed, moderately-fed, and well-fed shrimp. These variables exhibited significant treatment differences in <24 h after the initiation of the different feeding regimes, whereas significant changes in whole-body weight took longer to detect. Rapid detection of significant treatment effects can be useful in ecological studes, especially those concerned with food-web interactions.  相似文献

Structural specializations of chelipeds used by caridean shrimp in two kinds of grooming activity are described. In general body grooming, the chelipeds, and in some species, the last walking legs, nip, pick or brush material from the exoskeleton. When the cleaning chelipeds are the second pair, the carpal segment is multisegmented, increasing distal flexibility which aids in grooming. Tufts of compound setae and setal chela locks are characteristic of cleaning chelae. In representatives from 13 of 15 caridean families surveyed, brushes of serrate setae surround the carpal-propodal joint of the first cheliped. This setal structure is used in the specific task of cleaning the chemotactile antennal flagellum. Cleaning brushes on the last walking legs of some species are involved in general body cleaning. Experiments on Heptacarpus pictus showed that when the cleaning chelipeds were ablated, body parts became fouled with epizoites and particulate debris in experimental shrimps, while control shrimps showed little fouling. Suggestions on the adaptive role of general body cleaning in these natant animals are discussed. A survey of cleaning characters in representatives from 15 caridean families suggest that such characters are rather constant within a family. A possible correlation between the taxonomic success of a family and the degree of development of general body cleaning is suggested.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the growth rate of saithe, Pollachius virens L., in wild populations collected from around the Beryl Alpha oil platform in October 1988 and from Loch Ewe on the west coast of Scotland in August 1989, by comparing the concentrations of various growth-rate indicators in the white muscle with those of laboratory-maintained individuals of known growth rates. There were significant correlations between the individual growth rates of laboratory-maintained saithe and concentrations of white muscle RNA expressed as g RNA mg-1 protein, mg RNA mg-1 DNA and as mg RNA g-1 muscle. Growth rate was also correlated with the activities of the enzymes citrate synthase, cytochrome oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase. RNA concentrations decreased with increasing body size, and weight-corrected estimates of RNA concentrations for a standard-sized individual were determined from the scaling relationships. RNA concentrations expressed in three different ways gave similar estimates of the growth rate for two samples of wild saithe, one from around an oil platform and the other from the west coast of Scotland. RNA concentrations were correlated with aerobic enzyme levels in oil-platform fish, although the growth rate estimates of the same wild fish were lower when expressed as a function of aerobic enzyme levels than when expressed as a function of lactate dehydrogenase concentration. It is concluded that the capacity for protein synthesis of white muscle expressed as RNA concentrations in relation to wet or dry weight may be used as an estimate of instantaneous growth rate and that additional confidence in such estimates may be gained from measurement of the levels of aerobic enzymes.  相似文献

Water, ash, proximate composition (protein, lipid, carbohydrate, hexosamine), and nucleic acid (DNA, RNA) content were measured in premetamorphic larvae of the congrid eel Ariosoma balearicum (Delaroche) collected from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Specimens ranged from 15.0 to 202.3 mm total length (TL) and 0.0116 to 4.3860 g wet mass (WM). Water content increased linearly with increasing specimen mass over the entire size range; consequently, percent water was uniform and had a mean value of 92.9±1.09% WM. Ash content also increased linearly with specimen mass, but only up to a mass of 2.5 g WM (165 mm TL). Ash content in specimens >165 mm TL showed only a small increase with mass, suggesting an improved osmoregulatory capability in larger individuals. The absolute amount of all proximate components increased with increasing specimen size, but rates of deposition among the components varied, resulting in different patterns in the relative concentrations of each with growth. Protein dominated the ash-free dry mass (AFDM) throughout development (29 to 59% AFDM); carbohydrate and hexosamine occurred in similar proportions (8 to 24% AFDM). Lipid was a significant proportion of the AFDM in only the smallest individuals. Lipid concentrations decreased initially as mass increased in individuals smaller than 0.4 g WM (90 mm TL), indicating a low rate of lipid deposition in small individuals. In specimens >90 mm TL, lipid concentrations were uniform and had a mean of 12% AFDM. Trends for biochemical components and nucleic acids suggest that growth of Phase I leptocephali occurs in two subphases (Ia and Ib). Phase Ia is characterized by cellular proliferation, preferential synthesis of protein and carbohydrate relative to lipid, and growth manifested more as increased length rather than increased mass. For A. balearicum, Phase Ia extends from yolk-sac absorption to 90 mm TL. In Phase Ib, nucleic acid content levels off, lipid deposition increases, and mass increases exponentially.  相似文献

Body volume growth rate, dry tissue weight, organic carbon content, and nucleic acid content (RNA and DNA) of individual Capitella sp. I were measured after 14 d of exposure to natural sediment, sediment contaminated with fluoranthene (in acetone) and sediment treated with acetone only. Exposure to 101 μg fluoranthene g−1 sediment dry wt during 2 weeks reduced body volume specific growth rate by 50%. Dry tissue weight and carbon content were also lower in fluoranthene-exposed worms. However, when corrected for differences in body volume, worms from fluoranthene-contaminated sediment had a higher dry weight and carbon content per unit body volume than worms from the control and acetone treatments. Part, but not all, of the reduction in body volume growth rate in response to fluoranthene may have been due to a reduction in tissue water content. The correlation between RNA:DNA ratio (which has previously been used as a predictor of recent growth rate) and worm growth rate was weak in the control group and was significantly influenced by sediment treatment. Not only did the fluoranthene-exposed worms have a lower growth rate than expected based on their RNA:DNA ratio, but analysis of this group separately indicated that measured growth rate was independent of the RNA:DNA ratio. Our results not only confirm previous indications of a weak relationship between nucleic acid content and actual growth, but indicate that empirical, predictive relationships between these variables measured under favorable growth conditions should not be extrapolated to predict growth under toxicant-stressed conditions. One of the main goals of sex allocation theory is understanding sex ratio evolution. However, theoretical studies predicting sex ratios in species with unusual sexual systems, such as protandric simultaneous (PS) hermaphroditism, are rare. In PS hermaphrodites, juveniles first develop into functional males that mature into simultaneous hermaphrodites later in life. Here, we report on the sex ratio (males/males + hermaphrodites) in the PS hermaphroditic shrimp Exhippolysmata oplophoroides. A 2-year study demonstrated that hermaphrodites dominated the population in two different bays. This skewed sex ratio may be explained by limited encounter rates among conspecifics. In agreement with this idea, the density of shrimps was extremely low (≤1 shrimp km−2) at the two study sites. Size at sex phase change and sex ratios remained relatively stable through time at the two bays. The stability of these parameters might be explained by the rather steady population structure of this species during the study period. A review of sex ratios in PS hermaphroditic shrimps (Lysmata and Exhippolysmata) revealed considerable variation; some species have male- and others hermaphrodite-skewed sex ratios. The conditions explaining inter- and intra-specific sex ratio variation in protandric simultaneous hermaphroditic species remain to be addressed.  相似文献

The adenylate energy charge ratio (EC) of 8 species of zooplankton ranged from 0.70 to 0.89. Eucalanus subcrassus had significantly (P<0.05) lower EC when captured during a 30-min tow than during a 3-min tow, indicating stress at capture. The concentration of ATP in the 8 species ranged from 9.1 to 36.0 g/mg protein and from 0.17 to 15.7 g/mg dry weight. Excluding a low value for the ctenophore Pleurobrachia sp., the average concentration was 8.1 g ATP/mg dry weight, which is equivalent to an approximate C/ATP ratio of 50.Contribution from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australia, and the Institute of Marine Biology, University of Bergen, Norway  相似文献

A comprehensive study on skeletal calcification in the regular echinoid Tripneustes gratilla elatensis was carried out between 1979 and 1981 in the northern Gulf of Eilat (Red Sea), employing size measurement, allometry and radiotracer techniques. Uptake rates of the isotope 45Ca were used to estimate the calcification rate of whole tests. Calcification rates of the different skeletal parts and the 45Ca uptake along the sutural margins of individual plates were also measured. Whole-test calcification rates for juvenile individuals, 11 to 13 mm in diameter, relative to their skeletal Ca dry weight, calculated using the allometric relationship between skeletal dry weight and diameter, were 1.5 to 1.8% d-1 for 4 to 8 h of incubation, while calcification rates obtained from periodical size measurements and allometrical constants amounted to 2.75% d-1. The apparent discrepancy between these results is explained partly by the short duration of the incubations, during which the internal calcium pools, apparently in the coelom, were not fully saturated with the radioactive tracer. This discrepancy decreased when longer radioactive incubations were used, or when a post-incubational deposition of 45Ca from these pools was allowed. The size of these pools is roughly 10 mol Ca per 13-mm individual, and it resides probably in the coelom where Ca concentration is 3 times higher than in seawater. The calcification rates given as percentage of skeleton added per day, both for the radioactive and allometric methods, decreased with the urchins' size. The calcification patterns of various components of the skeleton generally fitted their allometrical trends — a relative decrease in the size of the spines, apical plates and lantern. The teeth calcify rapidly to compensate for the constant erosion of their tips. Calcification per plate decreased exponentially from the apex to the peristome. Plate-edge calcification patterns of both interambulacral and ambulacral plates fitted patterns derived from size increment measurements, using natural growth-lines. Typically, most plates grow more horizontally (latitudinally) than vertically. It is suggested that the vertical vs horizontal calcification ratio (v/h) determines the individual plate growth and affects the whole test morphology.  相似文献

The effects of body-size and temperature on moulting frequency of the shrimp Lysmata seticaudata Risso were examined under controlled laboratory conditions. Shrimp ranging in weight from approximately 0.4 to 1.14 g and maintained at 17°C exhibited intermoult periods of similar duration (20 d). On the other hand, small individuals (0.23 g) held at the same temperature moulted on the average every 14.5 d. Over a temperature range from 8° to 20°C mean intermoult periods were inversely and linearly related to temperature; an increase of 1 C0 resulted in a decrease in the intermoult period of approximately 1.5 d. Although temperature acted to regulate the intermoult period of each shrimp in increments of whole days, it had little effect on the time of moulting within any 24 h period, since moulting occurred more than 93% of the time between 18.00 and 08.00 hrs. The night-time moulting pattern also tended to be most pronounced at lower temperatures (8° and 13°C) and in larger individuals. Possible factors controlling this phenomenon and its occurrence in other crustacean species are discussed.  相似文献

Shrimps are economically and ecologically very important, yet a lack of ageing techniques and hence unknown growth rates often impairs analytical assessments and management. A new method for the determination of in situ growth rates of shrimps is presented, based on dry weight condition. Since this index oscillates from low values directly after moult to highest values prior to moult in constantly feeding shrimp, the lowest observed pre-moult condition followed by a moult was introduced as a reference value to separate growing and starving individuals in field data. Experiments with Crangon crangon confirmed that (1) post-moult condition varies in a narrow physiologically optimal range, regardless of recent growth increments, and (2) dry weight condition prior to moult is closely related to the subsequent length increment. The method was applied to estimate growth increments from in situ dry weight condition data of C. crangon. The new method can easily be applied to other related species, since the required data can be obtained from very simple short-term experiments.  相似文献

Rhodomela confervoides (Huds.) Silva (Ceramiales: Rhodophyta) infected with the alloparasitic Harveyella mirabilis (Reinsch) Reinke (Cryptonemiales: Rhodophyta) was investigated with particular regard to rates of carbon fixation, patterns of soluble and insoluble assimilates, and transfer of reduced carbon from the photoautotrophic basiphyte to the fully heterotrophic epiphyte by means of 14C-labelling experiments. Gross carbon input by photosynthesis in Rh. confervoides accounted for about 53 g Cd-1 when based on a biological unit (average individual of 200 mg fresh weight). Some 3% of the remaining net carbon gain (equivalent to about 0.7 g Cd-1) was transferred from Rh. confervoides to its alloparasite, H. mirabilis (biological unit 0.5 mg fresh weight). Chromatographic examination showed that soluble 14C was translocated to and stored by H. mirabilis as mannosidoglycerate (=digeneaside) and probably a variety of amino acids. A certain proportion of soluble radiocarbon imported is converted by H. mirabilis to glycerolgalactoside (=floridoside). The bulk of imported 14C was recovered from the polymeric fraction, mainly from floridean starch.  相似文献

Nitrogen regeneration accompanying the bacterial degradation of a variety of amino acids supplied at 10.0 M to samples of coastal plankton communities collected near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada was examined. A lag period characterized by a low rate of amino acid uptake and ammonia release was typically followed by a dramatic increase in the rates of uptake and ammonia release. The duration of the lag period varied with the amino acid tested. The ratio of the final ammonia concentration to the nitrogen supplied as amino acid was taken as the regeneration ratio. This value varied from 0.58 to 0.86 for L-arginine and 0.38 to 1.17 for the other amino acids tested, with an average value of 0.74. The presence of inorganic fixed nitrogen at 10.0 M had no effect on the degradation of L-arginine. Other organic compounds supplied at 10.0 M decreased the lag period for L-arginine uptake and degradation. Glucose supplied at 50.0 M decreased the nitrogen regeneration ratio, but did not further decrease the lag for L-arginine degradation. Carbon respiration ratios for L-arginine, L-glutamate, and L-lysine were 0.70, 0.68, and 0.65 when the nitrogen regeneration ratios were 0.86, 0.38, and 0.77, respectively.  相似文献

The spider crabHyas araneus (L.) was collected from the North Sea in winter 1986–1987 and reared in the laboratory from hatching of the Zoea I (ZI) through the first juvenile instar (CI). Within a given moult cycle, individuals of the same age were sampled in intervals of 2 (ZI, ZII, CI) or 3 d (megalopa) for analysis of dry weight (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), protein, DNA, and RNA. Lipid was calculated from C. Biomass, growth rate and nucleic acid contents showed high variability during each moult cycle and between instars. Instantaneous growth rates of C were high in postmoult and intermoult, and low in the premoult period of each moult cycle. A shift was observed from high rates of lipid accumulation in the postmoult and intermoult stages to proportionally increasing protein accumulation during late premoult (ZI), or throughout a major part of the remaining moult cycle (in all other instars). DNA was accumulated throughout the ZI and ZII instars, but decreased in late premoult megalopa. It increased again from late intermoult through intermediate premoult in juveniles. RNA increased continuously during ZI and ZII, and decreased in the megalopa, almost to levels that had been found immediately after hatching. In juveniles, variation in RNA followed closely those in DNA. Cell multiplication (expressed by DNA increase) dominated over increase in cell size (defined by the C/DNA ratio) during the zoeal instars and in postmoult through early intermoult in the megalopa and CI. When specific (C-related) RNA values and RNA/DNA ratios were compared with instantaneous growth rates in C and N, no general correspondence was detected. The only significant relationship between specific RNA values and instantaneous C or N growth rates was found in the megalopa. The same held for the relationship between the RNA/DNA ratio and growth. Here, in addition to the megalopa, a correspondence with C growth was also found in the CI instar. Our results suggest that variation in nucleic acids may provide useful insights into mechanisms of growth on the cellular level (cell multiplication vs cell enlargement). However, lack of general correlation with variation in growth rates ofH. araneus larvae shows that the use of nucleic acids as a measure of growth is probably based upon too simplistic assumptions; it may not yield reliable predictions, when growth is associated with developmental events.  相似文献

Previous planned resources surveys of the Nigerian coastal waters were performed with research vessels, gear and personnel not specialised for shrimp fishing. The results have, therefore, only indicated relative abundance of shrimps in the areas fished, rather than showing the absolute catches which a commercial fishing vessel in the area may expect to make. The present survey used two commercial shrimp trawlers together with their crews, who already had long experience of shrimp trawling both in the Nigerian shrimp grounds and elsewhere. Four shrimp species were caught: Penaeus duorarum, P. kerathurus, Parapeneopsis atlantica and Parapenaeus longirostris. Of these, P. duorarum, P. atlantica and P. longirostris are of commercial importance, P. duorarum being the most important. The distributions and concentrations of these 3 species are shown, together with the size distribution of P. duorarum, and the fish by-catch at each station. With the exception of the transect off the Nun Entrance, all transects sampled showed areas of high concentrations of P. duorarum, that is, 54 to 113 lbs (24 to 51 kg) of head-on shrimps per hour of trawling. The oceanographic conditions prevailing at the time of the survey were normal for the area. Records of previous shrimp landings from the area show a regular seasonal variation and the period of the survey to be one of lowest catches. The catch rates obtained in this survey are, therefore, the minimum which might be expected for the year. From a consideration of the operating costs of the type of shrimp trawler considered adequate for use in the area, it is found that the break-even shrimp catch is about 41 lbs (19 kg) of head-on per hour.  相似文献
