A budget for the methane (CH4) cycle in the Xilin River basin of Inner Mongolia is presented. The annual CH4 budget in this region depends primarily on the sum of atmospheric CH4 uptake by upland soils, emission from small wetlands, and emission from grazing ruminants (sheep, goats, and cattle). Flux rates for these processes were averaged over multiple years with differing summer rainfall. Although uplands constitute the vast majority of land area, they consume much less CH4 per unit area than is emitted by wetlands and ruminants. Atmospheric CH4 uptake by upland soils was ?3.3 and ?4.8 kg CH4 ha?1 y?1 in grazed and ungrazed areas, respectively. Average CH4 emission was 791.0 kg CH4 ha?1 y?1 from wetlands and 8.6 kg CH4 ha?1 y?1 from ruminants. The basin area-weighted average of all three processes was 6.8 kg CH4 ha?1 y?1, indicating that ruminant production has converted this basin to a net source of atmospheric CH4. The total CH4 emission from the Xilin River basin was 7.29 Gg CH4 y?1. The current grazing intensity is about eightfold higher than that which would result in a net zero CH4 flux. Since grazing intensity has increased throughout western China, it is likely that ruminant production has converted China's grazed temperate grasslands to a net source of atmospheric CH4 overall.  相似文献

The wetlands play an important role in global carbon and nitrogen storage, and they are also natural sources of greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Land-use change is an important factor affecting the exchange of greenhouse gases between wetlands and the atmosphere. However, few studies have investigated the effect of land-use change on CH4 and N2O emissions from freshwater marsh in China. Therefore, a field study was carried out over a year to investigate the seasonal changes of the emissions of CH4 and N2O at three sites (Deyeuxia angustifolia marsh, dryland and rice field) in the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China. Marsh was the source of CH4 showing a distinct temporal variation. Maximum fluxes occurred in June and the highest value was 20.69 ± 2.57 mg CH4 m?2 h?1. The seasonal change of N2O fluxes from marsh was not obvious, consisted of a series of emission pulses. The marsh acted as a N2O sink during winter, while became a N2O source in the growing season. The results showed that gas exchange between soil/snow and the atmosphere in the winter season contributed greatly to the annual budgets. The winter season CH4 flux was about 3.24% of the annual flux and the winter uptake of N2O accounted for 13.70% of the growing-season emission. Conversion marsh to dryland resulted in a shift from a strong CH4 source to a weak sink (from 199.12 ± 39.04 to ?1.37 ± 0.68 kg CH4 ha?1 yr?1), while increased N2O emissions somewhat (from 4.07 ± 1.72 to 4.90 ± 1.52 kg N2O ha?1 yr?1). Conversion marsh to rice field significantly decreased CH4 emission from 199.12 ± 39.04 to 94.82 ± 9.86 kg CH4 ha?1 yr?1 and N2O emission from 4.07 ± 1.72 to 2.09 ± 0.79 kg N2O ha?1 yr?1.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to determine the abundance of the nitrogen-fixing shrub, Alnus incana ssp. rugosa (speckled alder), in shrub wetlands of the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State and to determine whether its abundance affects the concentration or accumulation of inorganic nitrogen in wetland substrates. Alder/willow wetlands are the second most common wetland type in the Adirondack region. The Adirondack Park Agency's digital GIS database of wetland types was used to determine the areal extent of alder/willow wetlands in the Adirondacks. Randomly selected wetlands were sampled to determine the size and abundance of alder. Alder densities averaged approximately 7000 stems ha(-1) and alder was present in 75% of the wetlands. As an indication of short-term accumulation of NO(3-) and NH4(+) in wetland substrates, ion exchange resins were used to sample ground water in high and low alder density wetlands as well as from wetlands lacking alder and dominated by conifers. Additionally, NO(3-) and NH(4+) concentrations in ground water samples were measured. NH(4+) accumulation levels from exchange resins were low for all wetland types while groundwater NH(4+) concentration was highest in the low-density alder sites. Wetlands with high alder density had approximately six times higher NO(3-) accumulation than other wetlands. Substrate groundwater NO(3-) concentrations in wetlands of high-density alder exceeded by three times levels in low or no alder wetlands, showing the importance of alder to local N budgets. To assess the recovery of shrub wetlands from acidification, future studies should determine the fate of fixed N in wetland systems.  相似文献

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by constructed wetlands (CWs) could mitigate the environmental benefits of nutrient removal in these man-made ecosystems. We studied the effect of 3 different macrophyte species and artificial aeration on the rates of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) production in CW mesocosms over three seasons. CW emitted 2-10 times more GHG than natural wetlands. Overall, CH4 was the most important GHG emitted in unplanted treatments. Oxygen availability through artificial aeration reduced CH4 fluxes. Plant presence also decreased CH4 fluxes but favoured CO2 production. Nitrous oxide had a minor contribution to global warming potential (GWP < 15%). The introduction of oxygen through artificial aeration combined with plant presence, particularly Typha angustifolia, had the overall best performance among the treatments tested in this study, including lowest GWP, greatest nutrient removal, and best hydraulic properties.  相似文献

To evaluate the tropical wetlands contribution to the methane (CH4) burden better, field campaigns were performed during 2004 and 2005 near the Miranda River, in five sites inside the Brazilian Pantanal region. The CH4 fluxes were determined using the static chamber technique. Environmental variables that may affect CH4 emissions, as the water depth, the water and air temperatures were also measured. The overall average of the 320 individual CH4 flux measurements made between March/2004 and March/2005 was 142±314 mg CH4 m−2 d−1, which is a value near the ones observed in other tropical flooded regions. About 47% of the fluxes measurements presented nonlinear increases in the chamber concentrations, which were assumed to be linked to CH4 losses through bubbles. The bubble flux represented about 90% of the total CH4 losses in the measurements and ranged from 1 to 2187 mg CH4 m−2 d−1 with an average of 292±410 mg CH4 m−2 d−1 (median: 153 mg CH4 m−2 d−1). The diffusive flux ranged from 1 to 124 mg CH4 m−2 d−1, with an average of 10±17 mg CH4 m−2 d−1 (median: 5 mg CH4 m−2 d−1). The fluxes from lakes were smaller than those observed in the floodplains, where the flooding was more dependent on the seasonal cycle. The diffusive flux showed a slight, but not statistically significant seasonal variation, following the seasonal variation of the flooding of the Pantanal region. A rough estimative of the total annual CH4 emission shows that the contribution of the Pantanal is about 3.3 Tg CH4 yr−1, which represents about 3.3% of the total CH4 emissions estimated to be originated in wetlands ecosystems. It may be a conservative estimate, which may present a large interannual variation, since it was obtained during one of the lowest flood of the Pantanal in recent years.  相似文献

We present a methane (CH4) budget for the area of the Baiyinxile Livestock Farm, which comprises approximately 1/3 of the Xilin river catchment in central Inner Mongolia, P.R. China. The budget calculations comprise the contributions of natural sources and sinks as well as sources related to the main land-use in this region (non-nomadic pastoralism) during the growing season (May–September). We identified as important CH4 sources floodplains (mean 1.55 ± 0.97 mg CH4–C m?2 h?1) and domestic ruminants, which are mainly sheep in this area. Within the floodplain significant differences between investigated positions were detected, whereby only positions close-by the river or bayous emitted large amounts of CH4 (mean up to 6.21 ± 1.83 mg CH4–C m?2 h?1). Further CH4 sources were sheepfolds (0.08–0.91 mg CH4–C m?2 h?1) and pasture faeces (1.34 ± 0.22 mg CH4–C g?1 faeces dry weight), but they did not play a significant role for the CH4 budget. In contrast, dung heaps were not a net source of CH4 (0.0 ± 0.2 for an old and 0.0 ± 0.3 μg CH4–C kg?1 h?1 for a new dung heap). Trace gas measurements along two landscape transects (volcano, hill slope) revealed expectedly a mean CH4 uptake (volcano: 76.5 ± 4.3; hill: 28.3 ± 5.3 μg CH4–C m?2 h?1), which is typical for the aerobic soils in this and other steppe ecosystems. The observed fluxes were rarely influenced by topography. The CH4 emissions from the floodplain and the sheep were not compensated by the CH4 oxidation of aerobic steppe soils and thus, this managed semi-arid grassland did not serve as a terrestrial sink, but as a source for this globally important greenhouse gas. The source strength amounted to 1.5–3.6 kg CH4–C ha?1 during the growing season, corresponding to 3.5–8.7 kg C ha?1 yr?1.  相似文献

Gaseous methane (CH4) emissions from a swine waste holding lagoon were determined periodically during the year. Micrometeorological techniques were used in order that emission rates from the lagoon were measured under ambient conditions with little disturbance to the natural environment. During the cold winter measurement period, CH4 fluxes were linearly related to lagoon water temperature below 22°C (r=0.87). During warmer measurement periods, both water and air temperatures and windspeed affected emissions rates. In general, flux rates followed a diurnal pattern with greater fluxes during the day when both temperature and windspeed were greatest. Mathematical models using air and water temperature and windspeed factors could explain 47 to 75% of the variation in fluxes. Daily emission rates ranged from 1 to 500 kg CH4 ha−1 d−1. The average flux for the year was 52.3 kg CH4 ha−1 d−1 which corresponded to about 5.6 kg CH4 animal−1 yr−1 from the primary lagoon.  相似文献

Spartina alterniflora exhibits great invading potential in the coastal marsh ecosystems. Also, nitrogen (N) deposition shows an apparent increase in the east of China. To evaluate CH4 emissions in the coastal marsh as affected by the invasion of S. alterniflora and N deposition, we measured CH4 emission from brackish marsh mesocosms vegetated with S. alterniflora and a native plant, Suaeda salsa, and fertilized with exogenous N at the rates of 0 and 2.7 g N m?2, respectively. Dissolved porewater CH4 concentration and redox potentials in soils as well as aboveground biomass and stem density of plants were also monitored. The averaged rate of CH4 emission during the growing season in the S. alterniflora and S. salsa mesocosms without N application was 0.88 and 0.54 mg CH4 m?2 h?1, respectively, suggesting that S. alterniflora plants significantly increased CH4 emission mainly because of higher plant biomass rather than stem density compared to S. salsa, which delivered more substrates to the soil for methanogenesis. Exogenous N input dramatically stimulated CH4 emission by 71.7% in the S. alterniflora mesocosm. This increase was attributable to enhancement in biomass and particularly stem density of S. alterniflora driven by N application, which transported greater photosynthesis products than oxygen into soils for CH4 production and provided more pathways for CH4 emission. In contrast, there was no significant effect of N fertilization on CH4 emission in the S. salsa mesocosm. Although N fertilization significantly stimulated CH4 production by increasing S. salsa biomass, no significant increase in stem density was observed. This fact, along with the low gas transport capacity of S. salsa, failed to efficiently transport CH4 from wetlands into the atmosphere. Thus we argue that the stimulatory or inhibitory effect of N fertilization on CH4 emission from wetlands might depend on the gas transport capacity of plants and their relative contribution to substrates for CH4 production and oxygen for CH4 oxidation in soil.  相似文献

In a laboratory study we investigated 1) the potential production of nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and 2) the effect of nitrate (NO3?) and anaerobic N2O development on CH4 production in sediment from a recently recreated free surface water wetland (FSWW) and in soil from an adjacent meadow. We designed an experiment where production of greenhouse gases was registered at the time of maximum net development of N2O. We made additions of biodegradable carbon (glucose) and/or NO3? to sediment and soil slurries and incubated them at four temperatures (4, 13, 20, 28 °C). Gas production from both substrates was positively correlated with temperature. We also found that the sediment produced more N2O than the soil. N2O production in sediment was NO3? limited, whereas in soil carbon availability was lower and only combined additions of NO3? and glucose supported increased N2O development. CH4 production was generally low and did not differ between soil and sediment. Nor did glucose addition increase CH4 rates. The results suggest that neither soil nor sediment environment did support development of methanogenic populations. There were no clear effects of NO3? on CH4 production. However, the highest records of CH4 were found in incubations with low N2O production, which indicates that N2O might be toxic to methanogens. In summary, our study showed that transforming meadows into FSWWs implies a risk of increased N2O emissions. This does not seem to be valid for CH4. However, since N2O is almost always produced wherever NO3? is denitrified, increased N2O production in wetlands leads to reduced rates in downstream environments. Hence, we conclude that when balancing NO3? retention and global warming aspects, we find no reason to discourage future creation or restoration of wetlands.  相似文献

Methane release from wetlands and watercourses in Europe   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study was conducted to estimate annual CH4 efflux from wetlands and watercourses in Europe and some adjacent areas. Wet ecosystems were divided into seven categories: ombrotrophic mires, minerotrophic mires, freshwater marshes, saltwater marshes, small lakes, large lakes and rivers. The geographical distribution and total area coverage for each of these respective ecosystems were taken from CORINE 2000, Global Land Cover 2000 [JRC, 2003. Harmonisation, mosaicing and production of the Global Land Cover 2000 database (Beta Version). EUR 20849 EN, Joint Research Center, Ispra, Italy] and ESRI 2003 databases. CH4 release factors were obtained from an extensive overview of published literature. Less than 3% of the study area of 22,560,000 km2 consisted of wetlands and watercourses. Large lakes (40%), minerotrophic mires (24%) and ombrotrophic mires (20%) covered almost 85% of the total area of wetlands and watercourses. The total CH4 release from European wetlands and watercourses was estimated to be 5.2 Tg a?1. CH4 release from minerotrophic mires (48%), large lakes (24%), and ombrotrophic mires (12%) composed most of the total CH4 efflux. High variation in the rate of CH4 release within the main ecosystem types, small number of studies in some ecosystems and ecologically inadequate land-cover classification are the main reasons for the uncertainties of the estimate. A better estimation of European CH4 effluxes from natural sources, now and future, would require: a much more detailed and ecologically relevant mapping of the area of different types of wetlands and watercourses, and long-term measurements of CH4 fluxes and their controlling environmental factors in poorly studied types of wetlands and watercourses. Finally, the data could be used for dynamic modelling of CH4 fluxes in the current and changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Micrometeorological flux-gradient and nocturnal boundary layer methods were combined with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for high-precision trace gas analysis to measure fluxes of the trace gases CO2, CH4 and N2O between agricultural fields and the atmosphere. The FTIR measurements were fully automated and routinely obtained a precision of 0.1–0.2% for several weeks during a measurement campaign in October 1995. In flux-gradient measurements, vertical profiles of the trace gases were measured every 30 min from the ground to 22 m. When combined with independent micrometeorological measurements of water vapour fluxes, trace gas fluxes from the underlying surface could be determined. In the nocturnal boundary layer method the rate of change in mass storage in the 0–22 m layer was combined with fluxes measured at 22 m to estimate surface fluxes. Daytime fluxes for CO2 were −0.78±0.40 (1σ) mg CO2 m−2 s−1. Daytime fluxes of N2O and CH4 were very small and difficult to measure reliably using the flux-gradient technique, despite the high precision of the concentration measurements. Mean daytime flux for N2O was 17±48 ng N m−2 s−1, while the corresponding flux for CH4 was 47±410 ng CH4 m−2 s−1. The mean nighttime flux of CO2 estimated using the nocturnal boundary layer method was +0.15±0.05 mg CO2 m−2 s−1, in good agreement with chamber measurements of respiration rates. Nighttime fluxes of CH4 and N2O from the nocturnal boundary layer method were 109±69 ng CH4 m−2 s−1 and 2±3.2 ng N m−2 s−1, respectively, in good agreement with chamber measurements and inventory estimates based on the sheep and cattle stocking rates in the region. The suitability of FTIR-based methods for long term monitoring of spatially and temporally averaged flux measurements is discussed.  相似文献

During the summertime of 2007/2008, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes across air–water interface were investigated in the littoral zones of Lake Mochou and Lake Tuanjie, east Antarctica, using a static chamber technique. The mean fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were ?70.8 mgCO2 m?2 h?1 and 144.6 μgCH4 m?2 h?1, respectively, in the littoral zone of Lake Mochou; The mean fluxes were ?36.9 mgCO2 m?2 h?1 and 109.8 μgCH4 m?2 h?1, respectively, in the littoral zone of Lake Tuanjie. Their fluxes showed large temporal and spatial dynamics. The CO2 fluxes showed a significantly negative correlation with daily total radiation (DTR) and a weakly negative correlation with air temperature and water temperature, indicating that sunlight intensity controlled the magnitude of CO2 fluxes from the open lakes. The CH4 fluxes significantly correlated with local air temperature, water table and total dissolved solids (TDS), indicating that they were the predominant factors influencing CH4 fluxes. Summertime CO2 budgets in the littoral zones of Lake Mochou and Lake Tuanjie were estimated to be ?152.9 gCO2 m?2 and ?79.7 gCO2 m?2, respectively, and net CH4 emissions were estimated to be 312.3 mgCH4 m?2 and 237.2 mgCH4 m?2, respectively. Our results show that shallow, open, alga-rich lakes might be strong summertime CO2 absorbers and small CH4 emitters during the open water in coastal Antarctica.  相似文献

Up to now, carbon gas fluxes from urban lakes in the boreal zone have seldom been studied. In summer 2005 we investigated fluxes from an urban boreal lake basin in southern Finland with long history of eutrophication and anoxia. Hypolimnetic CO2 and CH4 concentrations were high compared to other boreal lakes. During the open-water period, the lake basin acted as a source of CO2 and CH4 with fluxes of 2.10 mol m−2 and 0.04 mol m−2, respectively. Despite the high oxidation rate (83%), CH4 flux was higher than in other lakes and CH4 contributed 60% to Global Warming Potential. The ratio of carbon emission to accumulation was 4, i.e. emissions were an important route for carbon departure but less so than in rural lakes. Since the lake oxygen conditions affected nutrient availability, there was a positive feedback from hypolimnion to carbon uptake, which was reflected in gas concentrations.  相似文献

An increasing nitrogen deposition experiment (2 g N m?2 year?1) was initiated in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in May 2007. The greenhouse gases (GHGs), including CO2, CH4 and N2O, was observed in the growing season (from May to September) of 2008 using static chamber and gas chromatography techniques. The CO2 emission and CH4 uptake rate showed a seasonal fluctuation, reaching the maximum in the middle of July. We found soil temperature and water-filled pore space (WFPS) were the dominant factors that controlled seasonal variation of CO2 and CH4 respectively and lacks of correlation between N2O fluxes and environmental variables. The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of CO2 emission and CH4 uptake were relatively higher (3.79 for CO2, 3.29 for CH4) than that of warmer region ecosystems, indicating the increase of temperature in the future will exert great impacts on CO2 emission and CH4 uptake in the alpine meadow. In the entire growing season, nitrogen deposition tended to increase N2O emission, to reduce CH4 uptake and to decrease CO2 emission, and the differences caused by nitrogen deposition were all not significant (p < 0.05). However, we still found significant difference (p < 0.05) between the control and nitrogen deposition treatment at some observation dates for CH4 rather than for CO2 and N2O, implying CH4 is most susceptible in response to increased nitrogen availability among the three greenhouse gases. In addition, we found short-term nitrogen deposition treatment had very limited impacts on net global warming potential (GWP) of the three GHGs together in term of CO2-equivalents. Overall, the research suggests that longer study periods are needed to verify the cumulative effects of increasing nitrogen deposition on GHG fluxes in the alpine meadow.  相似文献

The quantification of oxygen release by plants in different stages of wetland plant life cycle was made in this study. Results obtained from 1 year measurement in subsurface wetland microcosms demonstrated that oxygen release from Phragmites australis varied from 108.89 to 404.44 mg O2/m2/d during the different periods from budding to dormancy. Plant species, substrate types, and culture solutions had a significant effect on the capacity of oxygen release of wetland plants. Oxygen supply by wetland plants was estimated to potentially support a removal of 300.37 mg COD/m2/d or 55.87 mg NH4-N/m2/d. According to oxygen balance analysis, oxygen release by plants could provide 0.43–1.12 % of biochemical oxygen demand in typical subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (CWs). This demonstrates that oxygen release of plants may be a potential source for pollutants removal especially in low-loaded CWs. The results make it possible to quantify the role of plants in wastewater purification.  相似文献

Globally, greenhouse gas budgets are dominated by natural sources, and aquatic ecosystems are a prominent source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. Beaver (Castor canadensis and Castor fiber) populations have experienced human-driven change, and CH4 emissions associated with their habitat remain uncertain. This study reports the effect of near extinction and recovery of beavers globally on aquatic CH4 emissions and habitat. Resurgence of native beaver populations and their introduction in other regions accounts for emission of 0.18–0.80 Tg CH4 year−1 (year 2000). This flux is approximately 200 times larger than emissions from the same systems (ponds and flowing waters that became ponds) circa 1900. Beaver population recovery was estimated to have led to the creation of 9500–42 000 km2 of ponded water, and increased riparian interface length of >200 000 km. Continued range expansion and population growth in South America and Europe could further increase CH4 emissions.

In conjunction with the OP3 campaign in Danum Valley, Malaysian Borneo, flux measurements of methyl chloride (CH3Cl) and methyl bromide (CH3Br) were performed from both tropical plant branches and leaf litter in June and July 2008. Live plants were mainly from the Dipterocarpaceae family whilst leaf litter samples were representative mixtures of different plant species. Environmental parameters, including photosynthetically-active radiation, total solar radiation and air temperature, were also recorded. The dominant factor determining magnitude of methyl halide fluxes from living plants was plant species, with specimens of the genus Shorea showing persistent high emissions of both gases, e.g. Shorea pilosa: 65 ± 17 ng CH3Cl h?1 g?1 (dry weight foliage) and 2.7 ± 0.6 ng CH3Br h?1 g?1 (dry weight foliage). Mean CH3Cl and CH3Br emissions across 18 species of plant were 19 (range, <LOD ?76) and 0.4 (<LOD ?2.9) ng h?1 g?1 respectively; fluxes from leaf litter were 1–2 orders of magnitude smaller per dry mass. CH3Cl and CH3Br fluxes were weakly correlated. Overall, the findings suggest that tropical rainforests make an important contribution to global terrestrial emissions of CH3Cl, but less so for CH3Br.  相似文献

Different land uses in subtropics play an important role in regulating the global environmental changes. To reduce uncertainties of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of agricultural soils in subtropical ecosystem, a four years campaign was started to determine the temporal GHG (CO2 and CH4) fluxes from seven sites of four land use types (1 vegetable field, 3 uplands, 2 orchards, 1 pine forest). The mean annual budgets of CO2, and CH4 were 6.5~10.5 Mg CO2 ha?1 yr?1, and +0.47 ~ ?2.37 kg CH4 ha?1 yr?1, respectively. Pine forest had significantly lower CO2 emission and higher CH4 uptake than agriculture land uses. Tilled orchard emitted more CO2 and oxidized less CH4 than non-tilled orchard. Upland crops had higher CO2 emissions than orchards, while abrupt differences of CH4 uptake were observed between upland crops and orchards. Every year, the climate was warm and wet from April to September (the hot–humid season) and became cool and dry from October to March (the cool–dry season). Driven by seasonality of temperature and WFPS, CO2 fluxes were significantly higher in the hot–humid season than in cool–dry season. Soil temperature, WFPS, NO3?–N and NH4+–N contents interactively explained CH4 uptake which was significantly higher in cool–dry season than in hot–humid season. We conclude that soil C fluxes from different land uses are strongly under control of different climatic predictors along with soil nutrient status, which interact in conjunction with each other to supply the readily available substrates.  相似文献

Steppe ecosystems are regarded as an important sink of atmospheric methane (CH4) and grazing is hypothesized to reduce CH4 uptake. However, firm experimental evidence is required to prove this hypothesis. Using a fully automated, chamber-based measuring system, we conducted continuous high-frequency (at a 3-h interval) measurements of CH4 uptake in a Leymus chinensis steppe, which is a typical grassland ecosystem in Inner Mongolia, China. Two management regimes were investigated: ungrazed since 1999 (UG99) and winter-grazed since 2001 (WG01). Measurements were carried out continuously during the periods of June–September 2004, May–September 2005 and March–June 2006. During all of these periods, significantly lower mean CH4 uptake (±S.E.) at WG01 (28±0.7 μg C m−2 h−1) as compared to UG99 (56±1.0 μg C m−2 h−1) (p<0.01) was found. Total CH4 uptake during the growing seasons (May–September) 2004 and 2005 at WG01 and UG99 was quantified as 1.15 and 2.15 kg C ha−1, respectively. Annual rates of CH4 uptake were approximately 1.91 (WG01) and 3.58 kg C ha−1 (UG99), respectively. These results indicate that winter-grazing of steppe significantly reduced atmospheric CH4 uptake by ca. 47%. The winter-grazing practice may have inhibited CH4 uptake by (a) increasing the likelihood of physiological water stress for CH4-consuming bacteria during dry periods, (b) decreasing gas diffusion into the soil and, (c) reducing the populations of CH4 oxidizing bacteria. These three mechanisms could have collectively or independently facilitated the observed inhibitory effects. Our results suggest that grazing exerts a considerable negative impact on CH4 uptake in semi-arid steppes at regional scales. Notwithstanding, further studies involving year-round, intensive measurements of CH4 uptake are needed.  相似文献

Agricultural waste burning is a widespread practice throughout the world but there is little information about its pollutant impact. This paper deals with a preliminary study of the pollution observed in Vitoria (Northern Spain) caused by cereal waste burning. The mean hourly flux of pollutants produced by cereal waste burning fires can reach values of 1.4 kt of CO2, 13 t of TPM and 3 t of NOx in the area around Vitoria. Measurements obtained in the area of emission and inside fire plumes show high ratios (NO2/NOx) indicating that nitrogen oxides emitted by the source undergo a rapid transformation in the same area of emission. Results relating to aerosol composition collected in Vitoria during burning periods show an increase in the concentration of K+, NO3 and Cl ions, that are inter-correlated. The modification of the ionic composition of aerosols also affects the chemistry of the rain collected in Vitoria. During the burning period, it is particularly noticeable that anthropogenic pollution (usually identifiable by the correlation between SO42− and NO3 concentrations) disappears, indicating the existence of an independent source of NO3 not linked to the SO42− source. Similar results were deduced studying BAPMON data collected in Spain during cereal waste burning. Finally, we note that ozone concentration measured at Vitoria is not affected by the pollution generated by the burning fires.  相似文献
