A study design procedure was developed and demonstrated for the deployment of portable onboard tailpipe emissions measurement systems for selected highway vehicles fueled by gasoline and E85 (a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline). Data collection, screening, processing, and analysis protocols were developed to assure data quality and to provide insights regarding quantification of real-world intravehicle variability in hot-stabilized emissions. Onboard systems provide representative real-world emissions measurements; however, onboard field studies are challenged by the observable but uncontrollable nature of traffic flow and ambient conditions. By characterizing intravehicle variability based on repeated data collection runs with the same driver/vehicle/route combinations, this study establishes the ability to develop stable modal emissions rates for idle, acceleration, cruise, and deceleration even in the face of uncontrollable external factors. For example, a consistent finding is that average emissions during acceleration are typically 5 times greater than during idle for hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide and 10 times greater for nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. A statistical method for comparing on-road emissions of different drivers is presented. Onboard data demonstrate the importance of accounting for the episodic nature of real-world emissions to help develop appropriate traffic and air quality management strategies.  相似文献

This paper reports on the analysis of on-road vehicle speed, emission, and fuel consumption data collected by four instrumented vehicles. Time-, distance-, and fuel-based average fuel consumption, as well as CO, HC, NOx, and soot emission factors, were derived. The influences of instantaneous vehicle speed on emissions and fuel consumption were studied. It was found that the fuel-based emission factors varied much less than the time- and distance-based emission factors as instantaneous speed changed. The trends are similar to the results obtained from laboratory tests. The low driving speed contributed to a significant portion of the total emissions over a trip. Furthermore, the on-road data were analyzed using the modal approach. The four standard driving modes are acceleration, cruising, deceleration, and idling. It was found that the transient driving modes (i.e., acceleration and deceleration) were more polluting than the steady-speed driving modes (i.e., cruising and idling) in terms of g/km and g/sec. These results indicated that the on-road emission measurement is feasible in deriving vehicle emissions and fuel consumption factors in urban driving conditions.  相似文献

In the aftermath of the 9/11 disaster, Mayor Bloomberg of New York City unveiled an aggressive budget plan that included the temporary suspension of glass and plastics recycling. This was considered by many to be anti-environmental, but the results of this study show that for lack of markets, even at zero or negative prices, nearly 90% of the plastic and glass set aside by thoughtful New Yorkers was transported to materials recovery facilities (MRFs) and from there to landfills. Sending bales of plastics to landfills is not limited to New York City. It is an environmental paradox that the United States is digging up new oil fields in pristine areas and, at the same time, continues to convert greenfields to brownfields by burying nearly 20 million tons of plastic fuel annually. The study also determined that at the present rate of source separation, estimated to be less than 30% of the available recyclables in 1999, building large, modern MRFs may increase substantially the rate of New York City recycling and also allow single-stream collection of commingled recyclables, as is done in Phoenix, AZ. Single-stream collection simplifies separation at the source by citizens and increases the amount of collected recyclables. Also, because collection represents a large fraction of the costs of waste management, it may have a significant economic advantage.  相似文献

In response to lingering concerns about the utility of dynamometer data for mobile source emissions modeling, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has constructed an on-road test facility to characterize the real-world emissions of heavy-duty trucks. The facility was designed to effectively demonstrate the full range of vehicle operation and to measure the emissions produced. Since it began operation, the facility has been continuously upgraded to incorporate state-of-the-art technology. Its potential uses include collecting modal emissions data, validating dynamometer test parameters and results, and demonstrating new emission control technologies.  相似文献

Quasi-continuous measurements of NOx, CO and C5–C12 hydrocarbons made during the MEDCAPHOT-TRACE experiment in a street canyon with heavy traffic load were used to estimate the CO/NOx and 36 individual NMHC/NOx traffic emission ratios in the Athens basin. A traffic emission inventory has been compiled for Athens and aspects of this inventory were tested against measurements. The results indicate that although the main features of the 9:00 to 15:00 variations of the NMHC/NOx and CO/NOx inventory emission ratios are in agreement with observations, during the rest of the day the fine structure of the variations of these ratios cannot be accurately predicted by the inventory. Comparison of pollutant emission ratios derived from ambient measurements with emission ratios predicted by existing inventories for Athens reveals serious discrepancies. Further, the experimental results and theoretical considerations indicate that the speciation of evaporative emissions changes with increasing ambient temperature in favour of the most volatile HC species, thus changing the speciation of traffic emissions during the course of the day. This is an aspect that is not taken into account in present urban photochemical modelling inventories.  相似文献

Modern diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems are very effective in reducing particle emissions from diesel vehicles. In this work low-level particulate matter (PM) emissions from a DPF equipped EURO-4 diesel vehicle were studied in the emission test laboratory as well as during real-world chasing on a high-speed test track. Size and time resolved data obtained from an engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS) and a condensation particle counter (CPC) are presented for both loaded and unloaded DPF condition. The corresponding time and size resolved emission factors were calculated for acceleration, deceleration, steady state driving and during DPF regeneration, and are compared with each other. In addition, the DPF efficiency of the tested vehicle was evaluated during the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) by real time pre-/post-DPF measurements and was found to be 99.5% with respect to PM number concentration and 99.3% for PM mass, respectively. PM concentrations, which were measured at a distance of about 10 m behind the test car, ranged from 1 to 1.5 times background level when the vehicle was driven on the test track under normal acceleration conditions or at constant speeds below 100 kmh?1. Only during higher speeds and full load accelerations concentrations above 3 times background level could be observed. The corresponding tests in the emission laboratory confirmed these results. During DPF regeneration the total PM number emission of nucleation mode particles was 3–4 orders of magnitude higher compared to those emitted at the same speed without regeneration, while the level of the accumulation mode particles remained about the same. The majority of the particles emitted during DPF regeneration was found to be volatile, and is suggested to originate from accumulated sulfur compounds.  相似文献

An updated assessment of fine particle emissions from light- and heavy-duty vehicles is needed due to recent changes to the composition of gasoline and diesel fuel, more stringent emission standards applying to new vehicles sold in the 1990s, and the adoption of a new ambient air quality standard for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the United States. This paper reports the measurement of emissions from vehicles in a northern California roadway tunnel during summer 1997. Separate measurements were made of uphill traffic in two tunnel bores: one bore carried both light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty diesel trucks, and the second bore was reserved for light-duty vehicles. Ninety-eight percent of the light-duty vehicles were gasoline-powered. In the tunnel, heavy-duty diesel trucks emitted 24, 37, and 21 times more fine particle, black carbon, and sulfate mass per unit mass of fuel burned than light-duty vehicles. Heavy-duty diesel trucks also emitted 15–20 times the number of particles per unit mass of fuel burned compared to light-duty vehicles. Fine particle emissions from both vehicle classes were composed mostly of carbon; diesel-derived particulate matter contained more black carbon (51±11% of PM2.5 mass) than did light-duty fine particle emissions (33±4%). Sulfate comprised only 2% of total fine particle emissions for both vehicle classes. Sulfate emissions measured in this study for heavy-duty diesel trucks are significantly lower than values reported in earlier studies conducted before the introduction of low-sulfur diesel fuel. This study suggests that heavy-duty diesel vehicles in California are responsible for nearly half of oxides of nitrogen emissions and greater than three-quarters of exhaust fine particle emissions from on-road motor vehicles.  相似文献

Urbanization typically involves a continuous increase in motor vehicle use, resulting in congestion known as traffic jams. Idling emissions due to traffic jams combine with the complex terrain created by buildings to concentrate atmospheric pollutants in localized areas. This research simulates emissions concentrations and distributions for a congested street in Minsk, Belarus. Ground-level (up to 50-meters above the street's surface) pollutant concentrations were calculated using STAR (version 3.10) with emission factors obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, wind speed and direction, and building location and size. Relative emissions concentrations and distributions were simulated at 1-meter and 10-meters above street level. The findings demonstrate the importance of wind speed and direction, and building size and location on emissions concentrations and distributions, with the leeward sides of buildings retaining up to 99 percent of the emitted pollutants within 1-meter of street level, and up to 77 percent 10-meters above the street.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using a differential optical absorption spectroscopy system, nitrogen oxide (NO) by an in situ chemiluminescence analyser and carbon dioxide (CO2) by a gas chromatographic technique were carried out in the Wuppertal Kiesbergtunnel. At high traffic density HONO concentrations of up to 45 ppbV were observed. However, at low traffic density unexpectedly high HONO concentrations of up to 10 ppbV were measured caused by heterogeneous HONO formation on the tunnel walls. In addition to the tunnel campaigns, emission measurements of HONO, NO2, NO and CO2 from different single vehicles (a truck, a diesel and a gasoline passenger car) were also performed. For the correction of the HONO emission data, the heterogeneous HONO formation on the tunnel walls was quantified by two different approaches (a) in different NO2 emission experiments in the tunnel without traffic and (b) on tunnel wall residue in the laboratory. The HONO concentration corrected for heterogeneous formation on the tunnel walls, in relation to the CO2 concentration can be used to estimate the amount of HONO, which is directly emitted from the vehicle fleet. From the measured data, emission ratios (e.g. HONO/NOx) and emission indices (e.g. mg HONO kg−1 fuel) were calculated. The calculated emission index of 88±18 mg HONO kg−1 fuel allows an estimation of the HONO emission rates from traffic into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the heterogeneous formation of HONO from NO2 on freshly emitted exhaust particles is discussed.  相似文献

In the present study, the real-world on-road liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicle/taxi emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and nitric oxide (NO) were investigated. A regression analysis approach based on the measured LPG vehicle emission data was also used to estimate the on-road LPG vehicle emission factors of CO, HC and NO with respect to the effects of instantaneous vehicle speed and acceleration/deceleration profiles for local urban driving patterns. The results show that the LPG vehicle model years and driving patterns have a strong correlation to their emission factors. A unique correlation of LPG vehicle emission factors (i.e., g km−1 and g l−1) on different model years for urban driving patterns has been established. Finally, a comparison was made between the average LPG, and petrol [Chan, T.L., Ning, Z., Leung, C.W., Cheung, C.S., Hung, W.T., Dong, G., 2004. On-road remote sensing of petrol vehicle emissions measurement and emission factors estimation in Hong Kong. Atmospheric Environment 38, 2055–2066 and 3541] and diesel [Chan, T.L., Ning, Z., 2005. On-road remote sensing of diesel vehicle emissions measurement and emission factors estimation in Hong Kong. Atmospheric Environment 39, 6843–6856] vehicle emission factors. It has shown that the introduction of the replacement of diesel taxis to LPG taxis has alleviated effectively the urban street air pollution. However, it has demonstrated that proper maintenance on the aged LPG taxis should also be taken into consideration.  相似文献

The Indo-Gangetic plain (IGP) has received extensive attention of the global scientific community due to higher levels of trace gases and aerosols over this region. Satellite retrievals and model simulations show that, in particular, the eastern part IGP is highly polluted. Despite this attention, in situ measurements of trace gases are very limited over this region. This paper presents measurements of SO2, CO, CH4, and C2–C5 NMHCs during March 2012–February 2013 over Kolkata, a megacity in the eastern IGP, with a focus on processes impacting their levels. The mean SO2 and C2H6 concentrations during winter and post-monsoon periods were eight and three times higher compared to pre-monsoon and monsoon. Early morning enhancements in SO2 and several NMHCs during winter connote boundary layer effects. Daytime elevations in SO2 during pre-monsoon and monsoon suggest impacts of photo-oxidation. Inter-species correlations and trajectory analysis evince transport of SO2 from regional combustion sources (e.g., coal burning in power plants, industries) along the east of the Indo-Gangetic plain impacting SO2 levels at the site. However, C2H2 to CO ratio over Kolkata, which are comparable to other urban regions in India, show impacts of local biofuel combustions. Further, high levels of C3H8 and C4H10 evince the dominance of LPG/petrochemicals over the study location. The suite of trace gases measured during this study helps to decipher between impacts of local emissions and influence of transport on their levels.  相似文献

The quality of an emission calculation model based on emission factors measured on roller test stands and statistical traffic data was evaluated using source strengths and emission factors calculated from real-world exhaust gas concentration differences measured upwind and downwind of a motorway in southwest Germany. Gaseous and particulate emissions were taken into account. Detailed traffic census data were taken during the measurements. The results were compared with findings of similar studies. The main conclusion is the underestimation of CO and NOx source strengths by the model. On the average, it amounts to 23% in case of CO and 17% for NOx. The latter underestimation results from an undervaluation by 22% of NOx emission factors of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). There are significant differences between source strengths on working days and weekends because of the different traffic split between light-duty vehicles (LDVs) and HDVs. The mean emission factors of all vehicles from measurements are 1.08 g km−1 veh−1 for NOx and 2.62 g km−1 veh−1 for CO. The model calculations give 0.92 g km−1 veh−1 for NOx and 2.14 g km−1 veh−1 for CO.The source strengths of 21 non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) compounds quantified are underestimated by the model. The ratio between the measured and model-calculated emissions ranges from 1.3 to 2.1 for BTX and up to 21 for 16 other NMHCs. The reason for the differences is the insufficient knowledge of NMHC emissions of road traffic.Particulate matter emissions are dominated by ultra-fine particles in the 10–40 nm range. As far as aerosols larger than 29 nm are concerned, 1.80×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 are determined for all vehicles, 1.22×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 and an aerosol volume of 0.03 cm3 km−1 veh−1 are measured for LDVs, and for HDVs 7.79×1014 particles km−1 veh−1 and 0.41 cm3 km−1 veh−1 are calculated. Traffic-induced turbulence has been identified to have a decisive influence on exhaust gas dispersion near the source.  相似文献

Increase in traffic volumes and changes in travel-related characteristics increase vehicular emissions significantly. It is difficult, however, to accurately estimate emissions with current practice because of the reliance on travel forecasting models that are based on steady state hourly averages and, thus, are incapable of capturing the effects of traffic variations in the transportation network. This paper proposes an intermediate model component that can provide better estimates of link speeds by considering a set of Emission Specific Characteristics (ESC) for each link. The intermediate model is developed using multiple linear regression; it is then calibrated, validated, and evaluated using a microscopic traffic simulation model. The improved link speed data can then be used to provide better estimates of emissions. The evaluation results show that the proposed emission estimation method performs better than current practice and is capable of estimating time-dependent emissions if traffic sensor data are available as model input.  相似文献

Zhuhai, a relatively less developed city on the western coast of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of China, is planning to undergo major development in coming years. A Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project has been approved by the Central Government of China. The project will have great impact on the driving pattern and vehicular emissions to the city. This baseline study collected speed-time data of two instrumented private cars in morning and evening periods, as well as a daytime nonpeak period of >10 consecutive days in the spring and winter of 2003. The authors used the microwave speed sensor and global positioning system installed in the instrumented cars and used car-chasing technique to perform the data collection. They used the statistical package SPSS to assess the consistency, as well as to evaluate the variability of the data. Nine parameters, namely, average speed, average running speed, average acceleration rate, average deceleration rate, mean length of a driving period, time proportions of driving modes, average number of acceleration-deceleration changes, root mean square acceleration, and positive acceleration kinetic energy are calculated to represent the driving characteristics. A driving cycle for private cars was developed. If emission tests were conducted using the Zhuhai driving cycle, the level of vehicle emissions measured is likely to be in between that of the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) cycle and the Melbourne Peak cycle.  相似文献

The greater the use of energy in the transportation sectors, the higher the emission of carbon monoxide (CO), and hence inevitable harm to environment and human health. In this concern, measuring and predicting of CO emission from transportation sector—especially large cities—is important as it constitute 90 % of all CO emission. Many urban cities in developing world have not properly experienced such measurements or predictions. In this paper, for the first time, field measurements of traffic characteristics data and corresponding CO concentration have been performed for developing a model for predicting CO emissions from transportation sector for New Borg El Arab (NBC), Egypt. The performance of Swiss-German Handbook Emission Factors for Road Transport (HBEFA v3.1) model has been assessed for predicting the CO concentration at roadside in the study area. Results indicated that HBEFA v3.1 underestimate emission figures. The developed CO dynamic emission model involves the traffic flow characteristics with roadside CO concentrations. Acceptable representation of measured CO concentration has been shown by the developed dynamic CO emission model which introduces R 2?=?0.77, mean biases and frictional biases of ?0.27 mg m?3 and 0.09, respectively. A comparison between predicted CO concentrations using HBEFA v3.1 and the promoted dynamic model indicate that HBEFA v3.1 estimates CO emission concentrations in the study area with a mean error and frictional biases 159.26 and 233.33 %, respectively, higher than those of the developed model.  相似文献

Exposure to traffic emission is harmful to human health. Emission inventories are essential to public health policies aiming at protecting human health, especially in areas with incomplete or nonexistent air pollution monitoring networks. In Brazil, for example, only 1.7% of municipal districts have a monitoring network, and only a few studies have reported data on vehicle emission inventories. No studies have presented emission inventories by municipality. In this study, we predicted vehicular emissions for 5570 municipal districts in Brazil during the period 2001–2012. We used a top-down method to estimate emissions. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the pollutant with the highest emissions, with approximately 190 million tons per year during the period 2001–2012). For the other traffic-related pollutants, we predicted annual emissions of 1.5 million tons for carbon monoxide (CO), 1.2 million tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx), 209,000 tons of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), 58,000 tons of particulate matter (PM), and 42,000 tons for methane (CH4). From 2001 to 2012, CO, NMHC, and PM emissions decreased by 41, 33, and 47%, respectively, whereas those CH4, NOx, and CO2 increased by 2, 4, and 84%, respectively. We estimated uncertainties in our study and found that NOx was the pollutant with the lowest percentage difference, 8%, and NMHC with the highest one, 30%. For CO, CH4, CO2, and PM, the values were 22, 14, 21, and 20%, respectively. Finally, we found that during 2001 and 2012 emissions increased in the Northwest and Northeast. In contrast, pollutant emissions, except for CO2, decreased in the Southeast, South, and part of Midwest. Our predictions can be critical to efforts developing cost-effective public policies tailored to individual municipal districts in Brazil.

Implications: Emission inventories may be an alternative approach to provide data for air quality forecasting in areas where air quality data are not available. This approach can be an effective tool in developing spatially resolved emission inventories.  相似文献

Urban atmospheres contain complex mixtures of air pollutants including mutagenic and carcinogenic substances such as benzene, diesel soot, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In the frame of a European network for the assessment of air quality by the use of bioindicator plants, the Tradescantia micronucleus (Trad-MCN) test was applied to examine the genotoxicity of urban air pollution. Cuttings of Tradescantia clone #4430 were exposed to ambient air at 65 monitoring sites in 10 conurbations employing a standardised methodology. The tests revealed an elevated genotoxic potential mainly at those urban sites which were exposed to severe car traffic emissions. This bioassay proved to be a suitable tool to detect local 'hot spots' of mutagenic air pollution in urban areas. For its use in routine monitoring programmes, however, further standardisation of cultivation and exposure techniques is recommended in order to reduce the variability of results due to varying environmental conditions.  相似文献

Traffic emission estimation in developing countries is a key-issue for air pollution management. In most cases, comprehensive bottom-up methodologies cannot be applied in mid-sized cities because of the resource cost related to their application. In this paper, a simplified emission estimation model (SEEM) is evaluated. The model is based on a top-down approach and gives annual global hot emission. Particular attention is paid to the quality of the input traffic data. The quality of results is assessed by application of the SEEM model in the Chilean Gran Concepción urban area and by comparison with a bottom-up approach that has been led for the year 2000. The SEEM model estimates emissions with an accuracy of about 20% and is related to important resource savings. The results of the SEEM model are then distributed in space with a disaggregation approach and using GIS techniques. The relevancy of the disaggregation approach is evaluated among several possibilities through statistical methods. A spatial disaggregation using principal roads density gives the best results in terms of emissions repartition and gives a globally accurate image of the distribution of hot emissions in a mid-sized city.  相似文献

Ambient air measurements of N2O, NOx, CO, and HC based on grab sampling were conducted in a major traffic tunnel in Sweden, that carries up to 4,000 vehicles per hour, in order to estimate real-world emissions of N2O for road traffic. Two different methods--relative and mass balance-were used to calculate a N2O emission factor for the mixed vehicle fleet, which gave an average emission factor, at average speeds of 30-70 km/h, of approximately 25 mg N2O/ km, with a range of 7-56 mg/km.  相似文献

The paper presents an overview of the present situation of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). The analysis indicates an urgent need to radically improve the current water supply and wastewater management practices, to become sustainable. The MCMA is one of the most rapidly growing urban centers of the world, with a population of about 21 million people, a very high rate of immigration and numerous illegal settlements. In order to meet the increasing water demand, successive governments have focused almost exclusively on supply management and engineering solutions, which have resulted in investments of hundreds of millions of USD and the construction of major infrastructure projects for interbasin water transfer. Environmental, economic and social policies associated with water management are mostly inadequate and insufficient, which is resulting in increasing deterioration in the environment, health and socioeconomic conditions of a population living in one of the largest urban agglomerations of the world. Surprisingly, however, no long-term strategies on demand-management, reuse, conservation, and improved water-management practices have been developed so far.  相似文献
