Moisture sorption characteristics of microbial polysaccharide (Ps.C101) from Pseudomonas caryophilli and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blends have been carried out at 27°C for water activity from 0.1 to 0.9. The sorption data was used to fit six different sorption isotherm models proposed in literature. The model constants were determined by linear fitting of the sorption equations. The ranges of applicability of water activity for isotherm models reported in this paper lie in between 0.1 and 0.4 for Brunaur–Emmet–Teller (BET) model (monolayer), and in between 0.2 and 0.9 for other models. The value of the coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.97 ± 0.02) confirms the applicability of the equations studied.  相似文献

The addition of plasticizers to biopolymer films is a good method for improving their physicochemical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan (CHI) blended with two hydrophilic plasticizers glycerol (GLY) and sorbitol (SOR), at two concentrations (20 and 40 wt%) on their mechanical, thermal, barrier, structural, morphological and antimicrobial properties. The chitosan was prepared through the alkaline deacetylation of chitin obtained from fermented lactic from shrimp heads. The obtained chitosan had a degree of deacetylation (DA) of 84 ± 2.7 and a molecular weight of 136 kDa, which indicated that a good film had formed. The films composed of CHI and GLY (20 wt%) exhibited the best mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan film. The percentage of elongation at break increase to over 700 % in the films that contained 40 % GLY, and these films also exhibited the highest values for the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 79.6 ± 1.9 g m2 h?1 and a yellow color (b o  = 17.9 ± 2.0) compared to the neat chitosan films (b o  = 8.8 ± 0.8). For the structural properties, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed an interaction in the acetamide group and changes in the crystallinity of plasticized films. The scanning electron micrographs revealed that all formulations of the chitosan films were smooth, and that they did not contain aggregations, pores or microphase separation. The thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 130 °C for neat chitosan film, but the addition of SOR or GLY elicited a decrease in the temperature of the peak (120 °C). In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the chitosan films was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes, and reached a reduction of 2 log after 24 h. The plasticizer concentration of 20 % GLY is sufficient for obtaining flexible chitosan films with good mechanical properties, and it could serve as an alternative as a packaging material to reduce environmental problems associated with synthetic packaging films.  相似文献

Strips of Ca-I [polylactic acid (PLA) monolayer plastic films from Cargill Dow Polymers LLC, Minnetonka, MN] cut in the machine and nonmachine directions were irradiated with an electron beam using a CIRCLE III Linear Accelerator (MeV Industries S.A., Jouy-en-Josas, Cedex, France). The effects of 33-kGy irradiation on the physical properties of the Ca-I strips were studied. In addition, the effects of ultraviolet (UV) light (365-nm) illumination on the degradation of three PLA plastic films, Ch-I (PLA monolayer plastic films from Chronopol, Golden, CO), GII (PLA trilayer plastic films from Cargill Dow Polymers LLC), MN), and Ca-I (PLA monolayer plastic films from Cargill Dow Polymers LLC) were analyzed by a modified ASTM D5208-91 method. Results showed that irradiation had decreased the weight-average molecular weight (M w), stress at break, percentage of elongation, and strain energy of Ca-I by 35.5, 26.7, 32.3, and 44.8%, respectively (P < 0.01). The shelf life of the irradiated Ca-I strips at 5°C and <20 ± 5% RH was about 6 months. The degradation rate of Ch-I, GII, and Ca-I with no UV light treatment at 55°C and 10% RH was 2512, 5618, and 3785 M w/week, respectively. Under the UV light illumination (365 nm), the degradation rate of Ch-I, GII, and Ca-I, was 2982, 8722, and 7467 M w/week, respectively. Hence, the degradation rate of GII and Ca-I was increased 55 and 97% by UV light (P < 0.008), respectively. This trend was not observed in Ch-I because its starting M w (78,000 g/mol) was close to the tensile strength lost range (50,000 to 75,000 g/mol) of PLA films. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that UV light does further enhance the degradation of PLA films.  相似文献

In this study the degradation of polylactic acid (PLA) plastic films in Costa Rican soil and in a leaf composting environment was investigated. Three types of PLA films were used: Ch-I, (PLA monolayer plastic films from Chronopol, Golden, CO), GII (PLA trilayer plastic films from Cargill Dow Polymers LLC, Minnetonka, MN), and Ca-I (PLA monolayer plastic films from Cargill Dow Polymers LLC). The average soil temperature and moisture content in Costa Rica were 27°C and 80%, respectively. The average degradation rate of PLA plastic films in the soil of the banana field was 7675 M w/week. Two compost rows were set up at the Iowa State University (ISU) (Ames) compost site. Temperature and relative humidity of the compost rows were kept at 55 ± 5°C and 50 ± 10% RH, respectively. The degradation rates of GII and Ca-I in the compost rows were 113,290 and 71,283 M w/week, respectively. Therefore, it was estimated that in Costa Rican soil and in compost rows, PLA would be visibly degraded in 6 months and in 3 weeks, respectively.  相似文献

Hydrolytic, enzymatic degradation and composting under controlled conditions of series of triblock PCL/PEO copolymers, PCEC, with central short PEO block (M n 400 g/mol) are presented and compared with homopolymer (PCL). The PCEC copolymers, synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, were characterized by 1H NMR, quantitative 13C NMR, GPC, DSC and WAXS. The introduction of the PEO central segment (<?2 wt%) in PCL chains significantly affected thermal degradation and crystallization behavior, while the hydrophobicity was slightly reduced as confirmed by water absorption and moisture uptake experiments. Hydrolytic degradation studies in phosphate buffer after 8 weeks indicated a small weight loss, while FTIR analysis detected changes in crystallinity indexes and GPC measurements revealed bulk degradation. Enzymatic degradation tested by cell-free extracts containing Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 confirmed high enzyme activity throughout the surface causing morphological changes detected by optical microscopy and AFM analysis. The changes in roughness of polymer films revealed surface erosion mechanism of enzymatic degradation. Copolymer with the highest content of PEO segment and the lowest molecular weight showed better degradation ability compared to PCL and other copolymers. Furthermore, composting of polymer films in a model compost system at 37 °C resulted in significant degradation of the all synthesized block copolymers.  相似文献

Three high molecular weight (120,000 to 200,000 g mol–1) polylactic acid (PLA) plastic films from Chronopol (Ch-I) and Cargill Dow Polymers (GII and Ca-I) were analyzed for their degradation under various temperature and relative humidity (RH) conditions. Two sets of plastic films, each containing 11 samples, were randomly hung in a temperature/humidity-controlled chamber by means of plastic-coated paper clips. The tested conditions were 28, 40, and 55°C at 50 and 100% RH, respectively, and 55°C at 10% RH. The three tested PLA films started to lose their tensile properties when their weight-average molecular weight (M w) was in the range of 50,000 to 75,000 g mol–1. The average degradation rate of Ch-I, GII, and Ca-I was 28,931, 27,361, and 63,025 M w/week, respectively. Hence, GII had a faster degradation rate than Ch-I and Ca-I under all tested conditions. The degradation rate of PLA plastics was enhanced by the increase in temperature and relative humidity. This trend was observed in all three PLA plastics (Ca-I, GII, and Ch-I). Of the three tested films, Ch-I was the first to lose its mechanical properties, whereas Ca-I demonstrated the slowest loss, with mechanical properties under all tested conditions.  相似文献

Sorption of Sr on bentonite was studied using the batch technique. Distribution coefficients (Kd) were determined as a function of contact time, pH, sorbent and sorbate concentration and temperature. The data were interpreted in terms of Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters for the sorption system were determined at three different temperatures. The positive value of the heat of sorption, ΔH° = 30.62 kJ/mol at 298 K, shows that the sorption of strontium on bentonite is endothermic. The negative value of the free energy of sorption, ΔG° = −10.69 kJ/mol at 298 K, shows the spontaneity of the reaction. ΔG° becomes more negative with increasing temperature, which shows that the sorption process is more favorable at higher temperatures. The mean free energy for sorption, E 9 kJ/mol, suggests that ion exchange is the predominant mode of sorption in the Sr concentration range studied, i.e. 0.01 – 0.3 mol/dm3. The presence of complementary cations depresses the sorption of strontium on bentonite in the order Ca2+>Mg2+>K+>Na+. Some organic complexing agents and natural ligands also affect the sorption of strontium. The desorption studies with ground water at low strontium loadings on bentonite show that about 90% of Sr is irreversibly sorbed on the bentonite.  相似文献

In this study, chitosan and bio-based activated carbon obtained from sugarcane bagasse biowaste were used for the synthesis of efficient sorbent for Cu(II) and Cd(II) ion via precipitation method. The prepared material was enriched with amino groups through grafting tetraethylenepentamine and tested for heavy metal remediation from water samples. The influence of pH was investigated showing optimum sorption at pH 6 for Cu(II) and Cd(II). Sorption tests, explained by means of the most common sorption models, evidenced that the best performances were reached pointing out the promising application of the prepared sorbent for water purification treatments: Uptake kinetics are relatively fast: the equilibrium was reached within 140 min; and the kinetic profiles were preferentially fitted by the pseudo-second order rate equation. Sorption isotherms are fitted by Langmuir equation. The sorbent showed high metal ion sorption capacity with negligible influence of ion strength. The maximum sorption capacities reached 3.44 and 2.38 mmol g??1 for Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively at 298 K. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated through variation of temperature. The sorption is unfavorable at elevated temperatures. Metal ions were successfully desorbed using 1 M HNO3 solution.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a hydrolytically degradable aliphatic polyester, and water vapor permeability may have a significant influence on the rate of degradation. A method is devised to use bags prepared from PLA films and filled with molecular sieves to determine the water vapor permeability in the polymer, its copolymers with caprolactone, and blends with polyethylene glycol. The “solution-diffusion” model is used to determine the permeability parameters. These include the solubility coefficient,S, a measure of the equilibrium water concentration available for hydrolysis and the diffusion coefficient,D, which characterizes the rate of water vapor diffusion into the film under specific conditions. Values ofS andD at 50‡C and 90% relative humidity ranged from 400 × 10-6 to 1000 × 10-6 cm3 (STP)/(cm3 Pa) and 0.20 × 10-6 to 1.0 × 10-6 cm2/s, respectively. TheS andD coefficients were also measured at 20 and 40‡C and compared to those of other polymers. The degree of crystallinity was found to have little influence on the measured permeability parameters. The heat of sorption, δHS, and the activation energy of diffusion, ED, were used to show that the permeability process is best described by the “water cluster” model for hydrophobic polymers. Finally, the diffusion coefficient is used to compare the rate of water diffusion to the rate of water consumption by ester hydrolysis. Results indicate that hydrolytic degradation of PLA is reaction-controlled.  相似文献

Poly(acrylic acid)s (PAAs) with various functional groups, such as phenolic hydroxyl, amino, and aldehyde groups, in the side-chains were treated with manganese peroxidase (MnP) prepared from the culture of lignin-degrading white rot fungi. While no change in the Mw of PAA without a functional group was observed after a 24-h MnP treatment, the Mw␣of␣PAA␣with p-aminophenol as side-chains decreased from 90,000 to 59,000, and that with␣o-aminophenol from 70,000 to 26,000. MnP treatment also decreased the Mw of PAA with a p-aminoaniline or aldehyde group. Furthermore, the MnP treatment generated a significant depolymerization of the cross-linked PAA with p-aminophenol from an insoluble polymer to water soluble products. These results suggest that functional groups generating radicals can act as elemental devices and induce degradation of the PAA main chain.  相似文献

Chitosan (0.1–1%, w/w), dissolved in 2% acetic acid solution, was added into 1% methylcellulose (MC)-based formulation containing 0.5% vegetable oil, 0.25% glycerol and 0.025% Tween?80. Films were prepared by casting. Puncture strength (PS), puncture deformation (PD), viscoelasticity coefficient and water vapour permeability (WVP) of the films were measured. The PS value of 312 N/mm was observed for MC-based films containing 0.25% chitosan. Values of PD, viscoelasticity coefficient and WVP of these films were 5.0 mm, 44.1%, and 6.0 g mm/m2 day kPa, respectively. The MC-based films containing 0.25% chitosan were also exposed to gamma radiation (0.5–50 kGy). The PS of the treated films decreased significantly from 312 at 0 kGy to 201 N/mm when treated at a dose of 50 kGy. However, WVP values were not affected by increasing irradiation the dose used. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy supported the molecular interactions due to addition of chitosan in MC-based films. Thermo gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetric experiments showed that thermal properties of the films were significantly improved by chitosan loading. Surface topography of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy and found rougher due to chitosan addition.  相似文献

Characterizing sorption processes is essential to understand the environmental distribution and toxicity potential of endocrine disruptors in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The sorption behaviors of three endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2)) on sediments were investigated using batch techniques. Samples were taken from some representative reaches in several major Chinese rivers. More attention has been paid to the effect of sediment organic components on the sorption of BPA, E2, and EE2. The results show that the sediment organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients (K oc (sed)) for three endocrine disruptors are in the order of EE2 > E2 > BPA, which corresponds to the octanol-water partitioning coefficients (logK ow) of the compounds. Moreover, the K oc values for humic substances (K oc (hs)) are comparable with the K oc (sed) values and highly dependent on the physico-chemical properties of humic substances in sediments. The UV absorptivity at 272 nm (A 272), which suggests the abundance of aromatic rings in humic substance structure, correlates well with the K oc (hs) values. In addition, the infrared spectra of the humic substances extracted from sediments show four strong bands centered at 3,400 cm−1, 1,625 cm−1, 1,390 cm−1, and 1,025 cm−1. The K oc (hs) values have a positive linear relation with the peak area ratio for peak at 1,025 cm−1 and a negative linear relation with the peak area ratio between peaks at 1,625 cm−1 and 1,025 cm−1. Hence, the hydrogen bonds play a critical role to the sorption of selected endocrine disruptors.  相似文献

The biodegradation of polyethylene-chitin (PE-chitin) and polyethylene-chitosan (PE-chitosan) films, containing 10% by weight chitin or chitosan, by pure microbial cultures and in a soil environment was studied. Three soil-inhabited organsims,Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andBeauveria bassiana were able to utilize chitin and chitosan in prepared PE-chitin and PE-chitosan films after eight weeks of incubation at 25°C in a basal medium containing no source of carbon or nitrogen. In a soil environment, the biodegradation of those films was studied and compared with a commercial biodegradable film containing 6% by the weight of corn starch. In soil placed in the lab, 73.4% of the chitosan and 84.7% of the chitin in the films were degraded, while 46.5% of the starch in the commercial film was degraded after six months of incubation. In an open field, 100% of the chitin and 100% of the chitosan in the films were degraded, but only 85% of the starch in the commercial film was degraded after six months of incubation. The weight of controls, (polyethylene films), remained mainly stable during the incubation period. Both PE-chitin and PE-chitosan films degraded at a higher rate than the commercial starch-based film in a soil environment indicating the potential use of chitin-based films for the manufacturing of biodegradable packaging materials.  相似文献

The bioactive packaging polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch films were prepared by incorporating combined antioxidant agents i.e. extracted spent coffee ground (ex-SCG) and citric acid. Effect of citric acid content on chemical compatibility, releasing of antioxidant, antibacterial activities, and physical and mechanical properties of PVA/starch incorporated ex-SCG (PSt-E) films was studied. The results of ATR-FTIR spectra showed that antioxidant agents of ex-SCG can penetrate into the film and the ester bond of blended films by citric acid was also observed. The presence of ex-SCG increased efficiency of antioxidant release and antimicrobial activity. The PSt-E film incorporated 30 wt% citric acid showed minimum inhibitory concentration against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The incorporation of ex-SCG and citric acid into film showed a synergistic effect on antibacterial activity. The water resistance and kinetic moisture sorption improved with incorporation of citric acid. The tensile strength and biodegradability of samples were in range of 5.63–7.44 MPa and 65.28–86.64%, respectively. Based on this study, PSt-E film incorporated 30 wt% citric acid can be applied as novel food packaging materials.  相似文献

Chitosan was dissolved in 2?% aqueous acetic acid solution and the films were prepared by solution casting. Values of tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM), elongation at break (Eb?%) and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the chitosan films were found to be 30?MPa, 450?MPa, 8?% and 4.7?g?mm/m2?day?kPa, respectively. Poly(caprolactone) (PCL) films were prepared from its granules by compression molding and the values of TS, TM, Eb and WVP were 14?MPa, 220?MPa, 70?% and 1.54?g?mm/m2?day?kPa, respectively. PCL was reinforced with chitosan films, and composite films were prepared by compression molding. Amount of chitosan in the composite films varied from 10 to 50?% (w/w). It was found that with the incorporation of chitosan films in PCL, both the values of TS and TM of composite films increased significantly. The highest mechanical properties were found at 50?% (w/w) of chitosan content. The Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of composite film was found to decrease significantly than PCL films. Thermal properties of the composite were also improved as compared to PCL. The water uptake test of the composite also showed promising results with a good stability of composite films. The interface of the composite was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and showed good interfacial adhesion between PCL and chitosan films.  相似文献

The present investigation was undertaken to characterize the biodegradation pattern of chemically modified starch films. Chemically modified starch films obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups of the polysaccharide have shown lower water sorption than native starch films, being therefore more attractive for a number of processing applications. However, no systematic study characterizing their biodegradation behavior and comparing it with the degradation pattern of native starch films has still been published. In the current contribution we characterized the enzymatic degradation pattern of three derivatized starch films by use of a commercial α-amylase from Bacillus licheniformis. Optimum degradation conditions were chosen upon assaying the effect of enzyme load and temperature on the reaction course of native starch films. Under the conditions selected, comparison of different derivatization procedures revealed that the starch film modified with octanoyl chloride was enzymatically hydrolyzed at a much higher rate than native starch film. Maleated starch films also showed higher susceptibility to α-amylolytic hydrolysis than native starch, whereas acetylated starch showed a hydrolysis pattern similar to that of native starch. Differences in degradation rates of chemically modified films were explained in terms of their amylose content which promotes dense networks that hinder the access of starch-degrading enzymes.  相似文献

The carbon emissions trading market has created a need for standard methods for the determination of biogenic content (χB) in solid recovered fuels (SRF). We compare the manual sorting (MSM) and selective dissolution methods (SDM), as amended by recent research, for a range of process streams from a mechanical–biological treatment (MBT) plant. The two methods provide statistically different biogenic content values, as expressed on a dry mass basis, uncorrected for ash content. However, they correlate well (r2 > 0.9) and the relative difference between them was <5% for χB between 21% w/wd and 72% w/wd (uncorrected for ash content). This range includes the average SRF biogenic content of ca. 68% w/wd. Methodological improvements are discussed in light of recent studies. The repeatability of the SDM is characterised by relative standard deviations on triplicates of <2.5% for the studied population.  相似文献

Residual cellulose acetate (CA) films with initial degree of substitution (DS) values of 1.7 and 2.5 (CA DS-1.7 and DS-2.5) were recovered from a simulated thermophilic compost exposure and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine changes in polymer molecular weight and DS and to study microbial colonization and surface morphology, respectively. During the aerobic degradation of CA DS-1.7 and CA DS-2.5 films exposed for 7 and 18 days, respectively, the number-average molecular weight (M n) of residual polymer decreased by 30.4% on day 5 and 20.3% on day 16, respectively. Furthermore, a decrease in the degree of substitution from 1.69 to 1.27 (4-day exposure) and from 2.51 to 2.18 (12-day exposure) was observed for the respective CA samples. In contrast, CA films (DS-1.7 and DS-2.5) which were exposed to abiotic control vessels for identical time periods showed no significant changes inM n and DS. SEM photographs of CA (DS-1.7 and DS-2.5) film surfaces after compost exposures revealed severe erosion and corresponding microbial colonization. Similar exposure times for CA films in abiotic control vessels resulted in only minor changes in surface characteristics by SEM observations. The conversion of CA DS-1.7 and DS-2.5 to CO2 was monitored by respirometry. In these studies, powdered CA was placed in a predigested compost matrix which was maintained at 53°C and 60% moisture content throughout the incubation period. A lag phase of 10- and 25-day duration for CA DS-1.7 and DS-2.5, respectively, was observed, after which the rate of degradation increased rapidly. Mineralization of exposed CA DS-1.7 and DS-2.5 powders reported as the percentage theoretical CO2 recovered reached 72.4 and 77.6% in 24 and 60 days, respectively. The results of this study demonstrated that microbial degradation of CA films exposed to aerobic thermophilic laboratory-scale compost reactors not only results in film weight loss but also causes severe film pitting and a corresponding decrease in chainM n and degree of substitution for the residual material. Furthermore, conversions to greater than 70% of the theoretical recovered CO2 for CA (DS 1.7 and 2.5) substrates indicate high degrees of CA mineralization.Guest Editor: Dr. Graham Swift, Rohm & Haas.  相似文献

A new way to implement the simultaneous reutilization of solid waste, the desulfurization of coke oven gas (COG), and even the desulfurization of coke by the co-coking of coking coal (CC) and waste plastic (WP) blended with a sorbent is proposed; the evolution of H2S and the removal efficiency of H2S from COG during the co-coking process were investigated in a lab-scale cylindrical reactor. The experimental results indicated that for the coking of CC blended with ZnO, Fe2O3, or blast furnace dust (BFD) as a sorbent, the instantaneous concentration of H2S in COG was lower than 500 mg/m3 (which meets the technical specification requirement of the Chinese Cleaner Production Standard–Coking Industry, HJ/T 126-2003) when the molar ratio between the key component of the sorbent and the volatile S in CC or the CC/WP blend, n Zn+Fe/n S, was about 1.2 for ZnO and Fe2O3, but not for BFD under the same conditions, suggesting that ZnO and Fe2O3 are promising sorbents, but that BFD must be treated chemical or thermally before being used as a sorbent because of the size and complicated nature of the influence of its phase/chemical composition on its desulfurization ability. However, for the co-coking of CC and WP blended with ZnO as a sorbent, n Zn+Fe/n S must increase to 1.4 and 1.7 for 100/2 and 100/5 blends of CC/WP, respectively, to ensure a satisfactory efficiency for H2S removal from COG. The pesticide impact rating index (PIRI) has been integrated with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to enable regional assessment of pesticide impact on groundwater and surface water resources. The GIS version of PIRI (PIRI-GIS) was used to assess the impact of pre-planting atrazine use in the pine plantations on the Gnangara Mound, Western Australia. The impact on groundwater was found to be spatially variable, mainly dependent on soil type and depth to groundwater, because land use variables were spatially constant. Areas with the greatest impact on groundwater were those where the soil had a low sorption capacity for atrazine. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of the sorption coefficient based on organic carbon (K oc) for atrazine was found to significantly improve the results from PIRI-GIS. Average values for K oc (i.e. based on overseas data) were too low for most of the local soil types, resulting in a general overestimation of pesticide impact on groundwater resources, but an underestimation of impact in areas that should be of greatest concern (i.e. where the soil has a low sorption capacity for atrazine).  相似文献
