This study assesses the potential of the fluorochrome calcein for use as a growth marker in bivalve shell growth studies. Calcein solutions were administered in situ to the brown mussel Perna perna (Linneaus), both by injection and immersion, and the effect of calcein concentrations on fluorescent mark deposition and mussel mortality was investigated in the laboratory. Field investigations showed that, 1 month after administration, calcein injection (125 mg l−l) into the mantle cavity produced superior results to the immersion treatments (150 and 500 mg l−l). Both methods resulted in fluorescent mark incorporation at the growing edge, but during immersion general calcein deposition associated with endolith activity resulted in fluorescence that made identification of a distinct datum point difficult. In contrast, the injection method produced clearly defined growth marks, which were easily distinguished from autofluorescence and persisted without visible degradation for a minimum of 9 months. Shell growth rates estimated using the fluorescent mark as a datum point were similar to those from earlier studies using different methods. Laboratory investigations revealed that at␣calcein concentrations of 80 mg l−l and above, 100% of juvenile (20 to 30 mm) and adult mussels (60 to 70 mm) retained a visible growth mark, while at concentrations >160 mg l−l all marks were bright and clearly defined. No mussel mortality was exhibited at any time, even at calcein concentrations of 640 mg l−l, eight times higher than those required for mark deposition. These results suggest that, compared to traditional methods of bivalve growth determination, the use of fluorochromes presents a relatively inexpensive, non-invasive and rapid alternative. When using calcein as a growth marker, problems associated with some other fluorochromes (e.g. inconsistent mark incorporation, high post-treatment mortality) were not exhibited. Accelerator mass-spectrometry was used to measure radiocarbon in the earliest formed portions of selected blue grenadier, Macruronus novaezelandiae, otoliths to provide a validation of fish-age estimates based on the quantification of opaque and translucent zones in otolith thin-sections. Δ14C data from blue grenadier otoliths were compared with previous estimates of Δ14C in seawater-dissolved inorganic carbon at similar latitutes, longitudes, and depths to link variation in otolith Δ14C to time. Minimum otolith Δ14C was −76.9 ± 7.7‰, indicative of pre-bomb radiocarbon levels below the surface mixed-layer at latitudes where juvenile blue grenadier are found. When plotted versus fish age estimated from otolith sections, the majority of the Δ14C data combined to define a curve reflecting the increase in bomb radiocarbon in temperate oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, indicating that age-estimation procedures based on otolith thin-sections are satisfactory for determining blue grenadier age. If otolith-section age estimates were correct, peak otolith Δ14C of 106.8 ± 7.9‰ occurred during the late 1960s, i.e. earlier than expected. This may be a manifestation of an increase in the mixed-layer depth associated with increased frequency of zonal westerly winds at this time. The use of otolith chemistry as a tool for analysing the biology of fishes assumes that the procedures used to collect and prepare otoliths for analysis do not alter their composition. With otoliths of Nemadactylus macropterus, Hoplostethus atlanticus, and Rhombosolea tapirina, we show that this assumption is not valid for the elements that can be detected using electron-probe microanalysers (those present at concentrations greater than ≃100 parts per million): all six elements routinely measured using these techniques were affected by at least one post-mortem procedure tested. Measured concentrations of calcium and strontium were relatively insensitive to most procedures tested, whereas concentrations of sodium, potassium, sulphur and chlorine were affected substantially by many commonly used procedures. The ease with which otolith composition could be modified post-mortem suggests that apparent geographic, habitat-specific or ontogenetic differences in otolith composition should be interpreted with extreme caution because of easily induced artefacts and the problem of pseudo-replication associated with the ways otoliths are sampled and prepared for analysis. The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is capable of surviving chronic exposure to sodium phosphate (inorganic phosphate) concentrations as high as 3.2 mg l−1, and triethyl phosphate (organic phosphate) concentrations of 1,000 mg l−1. However, chronic exposure to low (0.8 mg l−1 inorganic and 10 mg l−1 organic phosphate), medium (1.6 mg l−1 inorganic and 100 mg l−1 organic phosphate) or high (3.2 mg l−1 inorganic and 1,000 mg l−1 organic phosphate) sublethal concentrations of these phosphates inhibits feeding, fecal production, nutrient absorption and allocation, growth and righting behavior. Food consumption and fecal production declined significantly in individuals exposed to medium and high concentrations of inorganic phosphates and all levels of organic phosphates. Feeding absorption efficiencies for total organics and carbohydrates decreased significantly in individuals held in the highest concentration of organic phosphate. Feeding absorption efficiencies for lipids were significantly reduced in the highest inorganic phosphate concentration only, while they decreased significantly for protein with increasing phosphate exposure. Carbohydrate and lipid levels in gonad and gut tissues decreased significantly with exposure to increasing phosphate concentrations, potentially impairing both gametogenesis and nutrient storage in the gut. Moreover, gonad indices significantly decreased in individuals exposed to the highest concentrations of either phosphate. Growth rates decreased significantly under the influence of all phosphate concentrations, while increasing in seawater alone. Individuals exposed to increasing phosphate concentrations showed reduced righting responses (a measure of stress) and no acclimation in righting times during chronic exposure to phosphates over a 4 week period. These findings indicate that shallow-water populations of L. variegatus subjected to inorganic and organic phosphate pollutants will exhibit stress and be inhibited in their growth and performance due to reductions in feeding, nutrient absorption and allocation of nutrients to key somatic and reproductive tissues. The water chemistry of 20 municipal water treatment plants in southern Sweden, representing various bedrock situations, and water qualities, were investigated. Four water samples, raw and treated, were collected from each plant and analyzed by predominantly ICP-OES and ICP-MS at four occasions from June to December, 2001. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Na, HCO3 and a number of micronutrients, varied considerably in treated waters from the studied plants (ranges; Ca: 9.1–53.7 mg L−1, Mg: 1.4–10.9 mg L−1, K: 1.1–4.8 mg L−1, Na; 5.4–75.6 mg L−1, HCO3: 27–217 mg L−1). The elimination of Fe and Mn from raw water was efficient in all treatments investigated, giving concentrations in treated waters below the detection limits at some plants. Softening filters gave waters with Ca-concentrations comparable to the softest waters in this study. Adjustment of pH by use of chemicals like lye, soda or lime, modified the consumer water composition significantly, besides raising the pH. It was estimated that drinking water contributed to approximately 2.2–13% of the daily Ca uptake, if the gastrointestinal uptake efficiency from food and water was estimated to be around 50%. The corresponding figures for Mg was 1.0–7% and for F 0–59%. None of the studied elements showed any significant time trends in raw or treated waters during the follow-up period. The concentrations of potentially toxic metals such as Al, Pb and U were low and did not indicate risks for adverse health effects (ranges; Al: 0.5–2.3 μg L−1, Pb: 0–0.3 μg L−1, U: 0.2.5 μg L−1).  相似文献

We analysed growth of the Antarctic bryozoan Melicerita obliqua (Thornely, 1924) by x-ray photography and stable isotope analysis. M. obliqua colonies form one segment per year, thus attaining maximum length of about 200 mm within 50 years. In the Weddell and Lazarev Seas, annual production/biomass ratio of M. obliqua is 0.1 yr−1, which is in the range of other Antarctic benthic invertebrate populations. Production amounts to 3.34 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 90.6 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the shelf (100 to 600 m water depth), and to 0.13 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 36.8 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the slope (600 to 1250 m water depth). Artemia franciscana was grown on Isochrysis galbana Green (clone T. Iso) at saturated food concentrations (13 to 20 mg C l−1) for 11 d at 26 to 28 °C, and 34 ppt salinity. Three groups of brine shrimp were used in the feeding experiments: metanauplius III and IV (Group 1), post-metanauplius II and III (Group 2) and post-metanauplius VIII (Group 3), corresponding to 4-, 7- and 11-d-old animals, respectively. The ingestion rate, clearance rate and carbon balance were estimated for these stages at different concentrations of 14C-labeled I. galbana ranging from 0.05 to 30 mg C l−1. The handling time of algae was determined for all three groups. The ingestion rate (I, ng C ind−1 h−1) increased as a function of animal size and food concentration. In all three groups, the ingestion rate increased to a maximum level (I max) and remained constant at food concentrations ≥10 mg C l−1 (saturated food concentrations). The clearance rate (CR, μl ind−1 h−1) increased with increasing food concentration up to a maximum rate (CR max), after which it decreased for even higher food concentrations. The functional response of A. franciscana was most consistent with Holling's Type 3 functional response curve (sigmoidal model), which for the two oldest groups (Group 2 and 3) differed significantly from a Type 2 response (p < 0.05). The gut passage time for the three groups of A. franciscana, feeding on saturated food concentration (20 mg C l−1), varied between 24 and 29 min. As the nauplii developed to pre-adult stage the handling time of the algae increased as a function of animal size. The assimilation rate (ng C ind−1 h−1) in the youngest stages (Group 1 and 2) increased with increasing food concentrations, reaching a maximum level close to 10 mg C l−1. At higher food concentrations the assimilation rate decreased, and the proportions of defecated carbon increased, reaching 60 to 68% in the post-metanauplius stages (Group 3). The assimilation efficiency (%) was high at the lowest food concentrations in all three groups (89 to 64%). At higher concentrations, the assimilation efficiency decreased, reaching 56 to 38% at the highest concentrations. Received: 2 February 2000 / Accepted: 25 March 2000  相似文献

We document the distribution and abundance of seagrasses, as well as the intra-annual temporal patterns in the abundance of seagrasses and the productivity of the nearshore dominant seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) in the south Florida region. At least one species of seagrass was present at 80.8% of 874 randomly chosen mapping sites, delimiting 12,800 km2 of seagrass beds in the 17,000-km2 survey area. Halophila decipiens had the greatest range in the study area; it was found to occur over 7,500 km2. The range of T. testudinum was almost as extensive (6,400 km2), followed by Syringodium filiforme (4,400 km2), Halodule wrightii (3,000 km2) and Halophila engelmanni (50 km2 ). The seasonal maxima of standing crop was about 32% higher than the yearly mean. The productivity of T. testudinum was both temporally and spatially variable. Yearly mean areal productivity averaged 0.70 g m−2day−1, with a range of 0.05–3.29 g m−2 day−1. Specific productivity ranged between 3.2 and 34.2 mg g−1 day−1, with a mean of 18.3 mg g−1 day−1. Annual peaks in specific productivity occurred in August, and minima in February. Integrating the standing crop for the study area gives an estimate of 1.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum and 3.6 × 1010 g S. filiforme, which translate to a yearly production of 9.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum leaves and 2.4 × 1011 g S. filiforme leaves. We assessed the efficacy of rapid visual surveys for estimating abundance of seagrasses in south Florida by comparing these results to measures of leaf biomass for T. testudinum and S. filiforme. Our rapid visual surveys proved useful for quantifying seagrass abundance, and the data presented in this paper serve as a benchmark against which future change in the system can be quantified. The transparent goby Aphia minuta (Risso, 1810) is one of the main target species of the small-scale fishery off the Island of Majorca. Otolith microstructure and length-frequency analysis were used to study the age and growth of this species during the 1982/1983 and 1992/1993 fishing seasons. Daily periodicity of increment formation was determined by experiments with marked otoliths in individuals maintained in captivity. The length range of the catches during the 11 yr period was between 12 and 49 mm, with a main distribution (89%) between 24 and 40 mm. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the commercial fishery consists of seven age-groups (2 to 8 mo old), with a very high proportion of individuals (95%) between 3 and 6 mo old. Population growth-curves revealed no differences between males and females. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L = 53.69 mm; growth coefficient, K = 2.23 yr−1; theoretical age at length zero, t 0 = −0.005 yr. Those individuals of A. minuta caught in Majorca during the winter period reached a maximum age of 7 or 8 mo. Received: 30 December 1996 / Accepted: 16 April 1997  相似文献

Territorial Parma microlepis (Günther) (Pomacentridae) were collected at different depths, at three sites in each of four estuaries near Sydney, Australia. Element concentrations were measured by induc- tively-coupled–plasma mass spectrometry. Significant differences in concentrations of Mn and Ba were found in the otoliths of fish sampled in different depth strata, with concentrations generally greatest in fish found in water <4 m deep. Depth-related differences varied among estuaries (e.g. 0 to 1.2 μg Ba g−1 otolith). In most estuaries there was a negative linear relationship between concentrations of Mn and Ba in otoliths and actual depth. Great variation was found within an estuary among sites separated by 0.5 to 3 km. In the eye lenses, concentrations of Rb differed according to depth of capture of fish. The age of fish (1+ to 34 yr) had no influence on the concentrations of elements in otoliths or lenses. Multivariate comparisons of elemental composition (= fingerprints) detected significant differences among depth strata. Fish collected from shallow water had the clearest multivariate classification according to depth. There was a close match between our shallow strata and the average depths reached by low-salinity/high-temperature estuarine plumes. The element composition of whole otoliths and lenses represents average concentrations experienced by the fish. The temporal resolution of differences in ambient conditions is likely to be coarse in the fish (i.e. months to years). Received: 9 April 1999 / Accepted: 29 February 2000  相似文献

Production rates, chlorophyll concentrations and general composition of periphytic diatom communities growing on glass slides were studied in relation to environmental parameters during one seasonal cycle in the Bay of Paranaguá, southern Brazil. Slides were routinely submersed at 1, 2 and 3 m depth and recovered weekly for microscopic examinations, analyses of chlorophyll, cell counts and in situ photosynthetic incubations using the Winkler titration method. Water samples were also collected at surface and bottom layers for determinations of temperature, salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll in the water. The periphytic community was mainly formed by epipelic and epipsammic species, dominated by Navicula phyllepta, Cylindrotheca closterium, Navicula spp. and Amphora sp. Weekly chlorophyll a and cell accumulations on slides varied from <1–32 mg m−2 and up to 31 × 108 cells m−2, respectively. Photosynthetic rates varied from <1 to 35 mg oxygen mg chlorophyll a −1 h−1, with higher values in summer. Daily production varied from 5 to 3,600 mg oxygen m−2 day−1 (<0.01–1.4 g carbon m−2 day−1). Multiple regression analysis revealed that vertical differences in light conditions and grazing pressure jointly affected the influence of temperature on the seasonal patterns of cell densities and chlorophyll concentrations according to depth. Nutrients were added separately and combined to an initial concentration of 10 μM (ammonium) and/or 2 μM (phosphate) in a series of experiments carried out with the giant clam Tridacna maxima at 12 microatolls in One Tree Island lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, Australia (ENCORE Project). These nutrient concentrations remained for 2 to 3 h before returning to natural levels. The additions were made every low tide (twice per day) over 13 and 12 mo periods for the first and second phase of the experiment, respectively. The nutrients did not change the wet tissue weight of the clams, host C:N ratio, protein content of the mantle, calcification rates or growth rates. However, ammonium (N) enrichment alone significantly increased the total population density of the algal symbiont (Symbiodinium sp.: C = 3.6 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 6.6 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1; and C = 4.1 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 5.1 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 4.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 4.5 · 108 cell clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively), although no differences in the mitotic index of these populations were detected. The total chlorophyll a (chl a) content per clam but not chlorophyll a per cell also increased with ammonium addition (C = 7.0 mg chl a clam−1, N = 13.1 mg chl a clam−1, P = 12.9 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.8 mg chl a clam−1; and C = 8.8 mg chl a clam−1, N = 12.8 mg chl a clam−1; P = 11.2 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.3 mg chl a clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively). The response of clams to nutrient enrichment was quantitatively small, but indicated that small changes in inorganic nutrient levels affect the clam–zooxanthellae association. Chemical resistance of gorgonian corals against fungal infections   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The frequency and impact of diseases affecting corals throughout the Caribbean have been increasing but little is known about the factors promoting the emergence and outbreak of disease. A disease caused by a fungal pathogen [Aspergillus sydowii (Thom et Church)] which affects Caribbean sea fan corals provided an opportunity to examine the efficacy of coral crude extracts in disease resistance. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays showed that of the 20 common gorgonian species in the Florida Keys, extracts from 15 species had MICs < 15 mg ml−1 against A. sydowii pathogenic to sea fans. Extracts from several species in two gorgonian genera (Pseudoplexaura and Pseudopterogorgia) were among the most active, with MICs < 10 mg ml−1. Gorgonia ventalina L., one of two sea fan species known to be hosts to A. sydowii in the field, had an MIC < 10 mg ml−1, suggesting that complete disease resistance requires more active extracts. For the antifungal compounds to be effective in situ, they must also occur in sufficiently high concentrations in living coral tissue. For example, Pseudopterogorgia americana (Gmelin) had comparatively potent extracts but did not have sufficient concentrations in the tissue to be effective. Conversely, Plexaura homomalla Esper extracts were less potent but occurred in high enough concentrations in the tissue to be effective against A. sydowii. When potency and extract concentration are considered together (i.e. potency × concentration), several other gorgonian corals emerge as likely hosts to A. sydowii. Crude extracts from the most active gorgonian species were also effective against two geographic variants of A. sydowii pathogenic to sea fans, a non-pathogenic terrestrial strain of A. sydowii, and three strains of A. flavus Link known to be human, plant, and insect pathogens (MIC range, 7.5 to > 15 mg ml−1). Although the potency in these assays did not attain a clinically significant level, the potency is comparable to a known antifungal agent, hygromycin B, which had an MIC ≤7.5 mg ml−1 in our assays, highlighting the potential of these gorgonian corals for bioprospecting. The production dynamics and carbon balance of Thalassia testudinum in the lower Laguna Madre, Texas, USA, were examined during the 1995 summer period based on in situ photosynthesis vs irradiance (PI) measurements and continuous measurements of underwater photon-flux density (PFD). The validity of applying the H sat model, used to calculate production for Zostera marina as the product of the maximum rate of photosynthesis (P max) and daily hours of saturating irradiance (H sat) was assessed for T. testudinum by comparison with integrated production estimates derived through numerical integration. Gross integrated production values were combined with dark-respiration measurements of photosynthetic (PS) and non-photosynthetic (NPS) tissues and areal biomass to generate daily whole-plant carbon balance. Production and whole-plant carbon balance are discussed in relation to surface and underwater PFD measurements, biomass and other physical and chemical parameters collected during a 1 yr period from January to December 1995. The H sat model significantly underestimated production during all summer months, averaging 70% of integrated production over the entire study period. Gross integrated production ranged between 11.5 mg C g−1 leaf dry wt d−1 in June (during a period of unseasonably low PFDs caused by a drift-alga mat covering the seagrass bed) to 26.7 mg C g−1 leaf dry wt d−1 in July. Modeled net carbon gain was highest in July at 454 mg C m−2 d−1 (1.4 g dry wt m−2 d−1), sufficient to account for measured rates of leaf production in the study area and representative of T. testudinum populations of low productivity. During part of the summer period, however, the population was in negative carbon balance. The relatively low productivity of this population and the periods of negative carbon balance are attributed to low net photosynthesis:dark respiration (P net:R d) ratios, sporadic low-light periods, the small fraction of PS tissue relative to whole-plant biomass (5 to 13%) and nutrient limitation. Production models are sensitive to both light availability and the proportion of PS tissue supporting NPS biomass as reflected in whole-plant P net:R d ratios. Population dynamics and production of the egg-carrying calanoid copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus were studied for a year in Fukuyama Harbor, a eutrophic inlet of the Inland Sea of Japan. This species was perennial, with a large numerical peak in June and small peaks in September/October and November/December. During the study period, at least 11 generations could be detected. For each generation, the stage-specific survival from egg to Copepodite Stage (C) V was determined; it was very high during early life stages (egg to NIII), and gradually decreased beyond. On average, 94% of eggs recruited into NIII, which is strongly contrasted with very high (>ca. 90%) mortality during the corresponding stages for free-spawning copepods, i.e. Acartia omorii, Centropages abdominalis and Paracalans sp. This demonstrates that the egg-carrying strategy has a great advantage to reduce mortality in egg stage. The biomass of this species showed marked seasonal variations largely in parallel with numerical abundance. The instantaneous somatic growth rate increased linearly with temperature. The population production rate was estimated as the sum of somatic growth of larval stages and egg production of adult females; the annual integration was 51.0 mg C m−3 yr−1 or 0.38 g C m−2 yr−1. The otoliths of the King George whiting Sillaginodes punctata were assessed for their usefulness in adult-ageing. Whole, transverse-sectioned and broken/burnt sagittae displayed alternating opaque and translucent zones. Some small whole otoliths contained accessory areas of pigment, whilst large otoliths were too thick to transmit light, resulting in ambiguous counts in each case. Both marginal-increment analysis and treatment of fish with tetracycline demonstrated that the first three opaque zones formed annually, the first during the spring/summer of the second year of life, and the second and third in each subsequent spring. Otolith thickness increased linearly with the completion of each new opaque/translucent zone. An ageing protocol based on whole otoliths, supplemented with the breaking/burning of ambiguous otoliths is recommended. An algorithm for calculating age in months from otolith counts based on a fixed birth-date of the mid-point of the spawning season is presented.  The relationship between intermoult duration (coloration), sex, size and seasonal variations in fatty acid (FA) profiles was studied in a population of shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, inhabiting the Isefjord, Denmark. For male shore crabs, the total hepatopancreas FA content was high in July and December (12.7 to 16.0 mg g−1 dry weight, dw) but lower in May and September (7.3 to 10.0 mg g−1). This indicates that male shore crabs are in relatively good condition before winter, when the crabs migrate off shore, but in relatively poor condition when they return to shallow waters during spring. The hepatopancreas FA content also decreased over the mating season. After the mating season the hepatopancreas FA content of males had decreased to approximately 60% of that prior to the mating season. Female shore crabs had significantly higher hepatopancreas FA levels than males in May (11.7 mg g−1 dw), September (12.6 mg g−1 dw) and December (17.9 mg g−1 dw) but lower levels in July (9.5 mg g−1 dw). This indicates that the spawning season is the most energy-demanding part of the female reproductive cycle. For all seasons, the hepatopancreas FA content of green shore crabs was significantly higher than that of red shore crabs. For both colour forms, the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was significantly higher than that of saturated fatty acids (SAFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), with the relative proportion of PUFAs increasing when the total hepatopancreas FA content decreased. For both genders and colour forms, the most dominating SAFA was palmitic acid (16:0). Palmitoleic acid (16:1ω7), vaccenic acid (18:1ω7) and oleic acid (18:1ω9) were the three MUFAs found in highest concentrations. The most dominating PUFA was eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5ω3). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6ω3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4ω6) were also abundant in all samples. The results demonstrated that season, sex, size and intermoult duration all influence the amount of FAs present in the hepatopancreas of shore crabs. Element analysis of the annual increments in a longitudinal section from the tusk of a female dugong Dugong dugon (Müller) from Exmouth, Western Australia, was carried out by X-ray fluorescence-imaging, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Nine elements (Ba, Ca, Fe, Li, Mg, Na, P, Sr and Zn) were present in concentrations amenable to determination by these techniques. Most elements revealed both long-term trends and shorter, year-to-year, variations. For example, sodium concentrations increased from 0.55 to 0.72% with the age of the dugong. Strontium concentrations (mean 0.17%) were closely correlated (r = 0.86) with those of barium (mean 4.5 mg kg−1). Zinc concentrations increased from ∼70 to 170 mg kg−1 with dugong age, but also showed shorter-term fluctuations of ∼30 mg kg−1 that were correlated (r = 0.41) with mean annual Fremantle sea level (a measure of the Southern Oscillation Index and strength of the Leeuwin Current). The concentrations of the elements and correlations with year and between pairs of elements are discussed. Received: 10 January 1997 / Accepted: 21 April 1997  相似文献

Laboratory and field experiments were used to determine whether high (≃100 mg l−1), low (≃50 mg l−1) and control (≃0 mg l−1) levels of suspended sediment affected fertilisation, larval survival, and larval settlement in the scleractinian coral Acropora digitifera (Dana, 1846). Both high- and low-sediment treatments significantly decreased fertilisation, but post-fertilisation embryonic development was not inhibited by suspended sediments. Larval survival and larval settlement were significantly reduced in high- and low-sediment treatments. No difference was found between high- and low-sediment treatments in any of the three post-spawning processes investigated, suggesting that they are susceptible to sediment concentrations which are not exceptionally high even under natural conditions (>50 mg l−1). The introduction of an additional stress in the form of high levels of suspended sediments coupled with naturally high variability in recruitment may have a considerable effect on the successful supply and settlement of coral larvae to a reef. Given that many coral communities are open reproductive systems, the consequences of disturbance events are not likely to be restricted to the impact area. Recruitment to a population may be reduced significantly in the presence of high levels of suspended sediments because of effects on larval survival and settlement. Recruitment of larvae to adjacent populations may also be affected due to a decreased fertilisation success and potential increases in mortality of larvae passing through the affected site. The aim of our investigations was to determine, via oxygen and carbon-dioxide respirometry, how much energy dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) require when swimming at different speeds. Experiments were conducted on two female bottlenose dolphins (mean mass 162 kg) in the dolphinarium in Nuremberg Zoo, Germany, between March and August 1997. Animals were stationed in a respiration chamber for a minimum of 90 s after performing a variety of activities. We measured respiration frequency and oxygen requirements during (1) resting, (2) swimming at various velocities and (3) leaping to various heights. Resting metabolic rate of our bottlenose dolphins (2.15 W kg−1) was comparable to previously published data. Metabolic rate in swimming dolphins increased to 2.47 W kg−1 at 2 m s−1, while leaps to 2.2 and 3 m height required a power input of 3.5 and 4 W kg−1, respectively. Transport costs of swimming dolphins were lowest (1.16 J kg−1 m−1, corresponding to 0.12 J N−1 m−1) at a speed of 2.5 m s−1, yielding an optimal range speed of between 1.9 and 3.2 m s−1 (corresponding to minimum cost of transport ±10%). Breathing rates during all experiments correlated very well with oxygen consumption (r 2 > 0.89) and could be used to derive metabolic rates in unencumbered dolphins at sea.
